Sunday,October20,sawtheopening ofanewCatholicchurchatKonnon- gorring,oneoftheoldestsettlements ontheWonganHillsrailwayline.In honourofthegreatArchangel,theonly churchofthedistricthasbeennamed"St.Michael's.Assistedbyseveral BenedictineMonks,theRt.Rev.An- selmCatalan,O.S.B.,LordAbbotof NewNorcia, ceremoniesperformedtheopening inthemidstofalarge gathering.
Afterthechurchhadbeenblessed, theLordAbbotproceededtothealtar, whichhadbeentastefullydecorated bytheSistersofthePresentationCon- ventatGoomallingforthecelebration ofMass.HisLordshipwasattended bytheRev.FatherPlacidasmaster ofceremonies.Themusicforthe MissaTentia(A)wascomposedby Rev.FatherS.Moreno,whopresided attheorgan.Underhisskilfulfingerspouredforththesweettoned notes,towhichaccompanimentwas unitedthesingingintwopartsofthe MonasticChoirfromNewNorcia, whilstthestrainsofthe"Offertory AdoraTeDevote"wererenderedin threeparts.
Atoneo'clockapublicdinnerwas heldinthelocalhall.Duringthe courseofthemeal,Mr.L.Bowen,sec- retaryofthechurchcommittee,ex- tendedacordialwelcometotheLord Abbotandvisitingclergy,andthank- edthemandthememberofParlia- mentforthedistrict(Mr.Ferguson) fortheirpresenceontheoccasion.
AftertheLordAbbothadresponded,Mr. shortFergusonwaspleasedtomakea speech.Inthecourseofhisre marks,hepraisedthegreatpioneering workdonebythelateBishopSal- vado,andwhichisbeingsoablycar- riedonbythepresentLordAbbot. Inconclusion,hesaidthathethought agoodchurchmanwasalwaysagood citizen,andcongratulatedtheCatholics ofKonnongorringontheerectionof suchafinechurch.
Theafternoon'sprogrammeinclud. edtherecitaloftheRosaryandLit- any,followedbytheadministrationof theSacramentofConfirmationto twelvechildren.Afterconcluding thelatterceremony,theLordAbbot officiatedatBenedictionoftheHoly Sacrament,whichbroughttoanend theday'sceremonies.
Thememorabledaywillbelongre- memberedbythelocalCatholics, whosegenerosityandhardworkhavebeenresponsiblefortheerectionof suchacreditablebuilding.Nooneis prouderofwhathasbeenachieved thantheRev.FatherH.Moreno,who caresforthespiritualneedsofthe district.Therelativesofthreeonce prominentresidentsofthedistrict, nowenteredintoeternalrest,have erectedtheHighAltar,toperpetuate thememoryofCharlesandHannah Chitty,oldpioneersofthedistrict,and oftheirsonMichael,whobeforehis deathhadworkedhardfortheerec- tionofaCatholicplaceofworshipat Konnongorring.
Amidthesparselypopulatedareas ofthebush,St.Michael'sChurch standsasasilenttestimonytothe enduringFaithofthosewho,although farremovedfromtownandcity,are yetasstaunchmembersoftheTrue Foldastheirforefathersofold.-X.Y.Z

Howmanymartyrshavegiventheir bloodforChristintheamphitheatre whoseruinsto-daycompelourwon- der?LeoIX.usedtosaythatas manydiedthereasintheimperial circusesatRome.AndtheHidden
PresenceofChristintheSacramentsustainedtheircouragewhilethey waitedintheundergroundprisons listeningtotheroarsofthehungry beasts.
Thedetaileddescriptionofmany curiousrelicsintheLavigerieMu- seum,includinganumberoflamps, isgivenbyPereDelattre.Thegen. eralmotifoftheornamentationisEu. charisticsymbolism.Afrequentsym- bolisthefish,surroundedbysmall rollsofbread-thebreadwhichthe faithfulbroughttobechangedbythe wordsofthepriestintotheBPdyof Christ.Besides,therearetheLamb ofSacrifice,thegrapewithitsvine, thedovecarryingagrapeinitsbeak. Thesematerialremindersofthe EucharisticpietyoftheChristiansof Carthagefindacomplementinthe writingsoftheirDoctorsandBishops. Thestudy.ofthesewritings,especially ofthoseofSaintsAugustineandCy- prian,willformthespecialthemeof theCongress.St.Cypriancalledthe Eucharist"Thecentreandtheliving resumeofallChristianMysteries." Hishearerscalleditsimply"TheLife." TheseChristiansofthethirdcentury communicateddaily.Thetempestof persecutionsdidnotbreaktheheroic ChurchofCarthage.Butcyclonesof invasionsscatteredit.IntheMiddle Agestherewereonlyafewthousands ofChristiansinTunis,prisonersand slaves. Forcenturiestheprisonersandslaves,condemnedtolanguishinthis landunderabarbarousrule,found theirsolecomfortintheSacramentof theAltar.Thecaptivesmadealtars insecretplaces,andhadasocietyof theirownestablished-aConfraternity oftheBlessedSacramentatTunisand elsewhere.

OneofWestAfrica'smostpicturesque figures,'Prophet"WilliamWadeHarris,knownasthe"BlackElijah,"has passedaway.Hehasbeenforyears asubjectofnewspaper"features.' throughouttheworld,andonOctober 11,whenhisdeathwascabledtoLondon,the"DailyTelegraph"gavehim spaceonitsmainnewspage.
"Prophet"Harriswasanilliterate Kruboy,borninLiberia,whowith white"head-tie,"longwhiterobe, feet,bamboocrossinonehand,tatteredbibleinanother,wentforthofhis ownvolitionandthroughoutWestAfrica,butparticularlyintheIvory Coastpreachedsalvationthrough Christ.Heaskedfornothingand acceptednothing,refusedtobelongto anychurch,andrefusedtofounda newone,butwithacrudeyetpowerful languageandkeeninsightintothe humanheart,bidhisconvertsjoinany churchtheypleased,solongasitwas Christian.
Catholicmissionaries,whilenotapprovingsuchfreelanceevangelism, testifythattheChurchforawhilefelt thespiritualreactionwhichthisitinerantrousedamonghisfellowblacks. Itisbelievedthatheinfluencedtensof thousandstoacceptChristianity, thoughhestatedplainlythatothers thanhemustteachthemoncetheyenteredthefold.
AveteranCatholicmissionary, speakingbeforehisdeath,saidofthe "Prophet":"'Prophet'Harristravels aboutinLiberia,SierraLeone,andthe IvoryCoast,andhaswonderfulinfluencewiththenatives.Oneofour FathersintheIvoryCoastattests thatitwasnexttoimpossibletoget thenativestochurchuntilthe'prophet'visitedtheplaceandthenthe churcheswerecrowded.Apriestin SierraLeonegivessimilarevidence thoughinLiberiahisinfluencewasnot sogreat.probablybecause'noprophet isreceivedinhisowncountry.'

Atleast,itneedhavenoterrorsfor thejust.Inreality,thegeneralwind- ingupofthingsisforthefinalvindi- cationofthegood,andistheirpublic glory.
Itisnotanunhappythought. Re- memberthylastendandthoushalt neversin,"saystheWiseMan.
Butitmaybeasked:Whatisthe needforageneraljudgment,ifeach isjudgedimmediatelyafterdeath?
ThechiefreasonistovindicateGod's dealingswithmankind,andtojustify theactionsofthegood.
Thisworldisfilledwithcruelty, hardshipsandinjustice.Itmustbe confessed,however,thatthingsareim- proving.Injusticeandoppression arenotnowsocommonasinyears goneby.But,still,thereismuch thatisnotfairorstraightinmen's dealingwithoneanother.
Viewingallthis,someask:"Why doesGodallowallthesethings?Whydo-thewickedprosper?Itmustbe rememberedthatthisworldisnotthe onlyworld.Itisonlythebeginning andnottheendofourexistence. Eternitywillstraightenoutthings, andrestoreharmony.TheLastJudg- mentwillvindicateallthedealingsof Providence.
Somepeoplewilltrampleuponand treatunjustlythepoorandtheweak. Yettheyseemtoprosperinthislife. But,bywrong-doingandsin,thesin- nerinjureshimself.AsthePsalmist says:"Whiletheyarebeingraisedup, theyareatthesametimecasting themselvesdown."Thesinnerin- jureshimselfandinflictsuponhimself punishmenteitherintimeorin°ter-, nity,andofteninboth.
TheRoyalProphetsays:"Thewickedshallgnashhisteethatthe just.ButtheLordlaughsathim,be- causeHeforeseeshisdayshallcome."
Thewickedis punishment.condemninghimselfto Whileheseemstoin- flictinjuryonothers,heisallthe timedamninghisownsoul.
Futitmayagainbeobjected: Whataboutthepersonwhosuffers fromthesinofthewicked?Why doesGodaskhimtosuffer?This bringsupa-deepandimportantmys- teryofDivineProvidence.
Sufferingisthelotofthechildren of fromAdam.OurLordHimselfsuffered themaliceofmen.Somesuf- ferfromtheirownmistakesandtheirownfolly.SomethroughEllemalice ofothers.Godpermitsthisfortheir sanctification.IfHeallowsthegood tosuffer,itisallfortheirownulti- mateandlastinggood.
Themartyrswereunjustlyputto death,throughthewickednessofthe paganemperors.But,bytheirdeaths, theygainedtheirimmortalcrowns.It matterslittlefromwhatsourcesuffer- ingcomes.Itisallintendedforour sanctification.
TheGeneralJudgmentwillrectify allanomalies,aswellasgiveaproof ofGod'sjusticeandmercy.
But,forus,itiswelltothink,at leastoccasionally,ontheLastDay. Thiswillbeadayofbothjoyand sorrow.
Onthatday,terribleandeternal separationswilltakeplace.'Thegood willbeontherightandthewicked ontheleft.Onwhichsideshallwe be?Wehavenowourchoice.It willthenbetoolatetomakeit.Time shallthenbenomore.
"Ihaveputbeforeyougoodthings andevilthings,"saystheProphet. "Choosewhichyewill."Wecannow makeourchoice.Timeforusisnot yetatanend.
Ifwespendwelltheremainderof ourlives,wemaybeassuredofbeing ontherightsideonthatday. Wemusttakecaretokeepoursel- vesalwaysinthestateofgrace.The presenceorabsenceofgraceinour soulsatthemomentofdeathwillde- cideourfateforeternity. OurLordwarnsustoworkwhileit isday.Hemeanstoacquiregrace, andtoincreasethegraceeachday.But,perhaps,thebestwaytosecure thecrownofgloryattheLastDay istobedetermined,costwhatmay, toavoidsin.Ifwemakeupour mindstoavoidevenvenialsin,we shallbesureofbeingontheright sideonthatday.
ByagoodConfession,wemay secureGod'sgrace,ifwedonotnow possess mindsit.Afterthis,makeupyour toavoidevenvenialsin. Thisisnotsodifficult,ifwewillonly prayproperly.Morningandevening prayerwillbeasafeguardagainstall sin.Butwecanrepeataspirations frequently,andespeciallyintimesof temptations.

Theword"Presentation,"hesaid, meantagiftorsomethingofferedbya personorpersonstoonewhomthey lovedor pregentationsesteemedverymuch.Many aremadeintheworldof addressesandpreciousgifts,andin makingsuchofferingswearealways desirousofchoosingwhatisbestand mostacceptable,butthepresentation madebytheSisterswasmoreprecious, morebeautifulthananyearthlygift- theirhearts'love.Thiswasthegift Goddesiredmost.
In themcontinuing,HisGracereminded ofthewordsofourDivineLord toeachindividualsoul."Mychildgive Methyheart."Theymightlabourwiththeirhandsandtheirbodies mightbeconstantlyfatiguedinthe serviceoftheirDivineSpouse,butun- lesstheygaveHimtheloveoftheir hearts,Hesoyearnedfor,theirser- viceswerevalueless.
Nowthattheyhadmadethefinal consecrationoftheirlivestoGod,they mustneverlookback,nevergrudge thepresentationmadeto-day,nor weretheytoseekthefleetingorvain applauseoftheworld,hut,continueto livehiddenwithJesus,andprayevery daythatthefervouroftheiryoung heartswouldwaxandgrowhot,until thedaytheywouldreceivefrom Himtherewardpromisedtothose wholoveHim.

Mr.Chakkoisbeingdefended:nthe defamationsuitbysixoftheleading crimnallawyersoftheStateofTravancore,fourofwhomareCatholicsand twoHindus.CatholicMalabarhas beenarousedasithasnotbeenfor years.Aninterestingsequelofthe caseisthepublishingofanopenletter bysixtalentedyoungmenoftheReformedSect,towhichtheanti-Catholic writerbelongs,givingtheirreasons whytheyaregoingtoembraceCathOlicism.Thepamphlethascreateda sensationamongthemembersofthe sect,approximately100,000strong,in Malabar.
