Brady,A.M.,D.D.,ProfessorofMoral Theology,St.PaulSenfinary,U.SA. 0;course,allunderstandthatvivisectionisthecuttingoforoperating uponlivinganimalswithouttheties ofdrugs-todeadenpain.Whenthe methodsandheresultsofsuchexperimentationaremadepublic,invariably,questionssuchastheseareaired. Isthishumane?Isitnecessary?Is itnotuseless?Aresuchmeansof compilingscientificdatanotimmoral inthemselvesandhencereprehensible? Shouldsciencebeadvancedbymeans thatcertainlyentailtortureandsufferingforthesubjectanimals?
Onthesequestions,notseldom,religionandmoralityareinvokedfor answers;oftenenough.Catholicteachingissought.And,whengiven,this Catholicthoughtisnotalwaysunderstood.
ForitisanacceptedprincipleofCatholicethicalthinkingthatthelower ordersofcreatoinaremadetoserve thehigherandexistforthesakeof manOfallcreatures,manalonepossessesintelligenceandfreewill,is aloneaperson,aloneisvestedwith rightsoflifeandlimb.Hence,in vivisection,therecanbenoquestioa ofimmoralityorofinjusticeaslong asthereisinvokedsomereasonable 'expectationthatscienceandthehumanracewillthusbeserved.
ThisistheonlyanswerthatCatholicthoughtasserts.Whethervivisection.isactuallyofutilityrestswith thescientiststoanswer.Whetherit isnecessarydependsoncircumstances. Catholicthinkersaffirmonlythat,if necessaryandifuseful,suchexperimentsarenotimmoral.
Atthesametime,thesameCatholic ethicalprinciplesprotestthatmen mustrememberhisowndignityand thatcrueltytoanimalsisunworthy ofscienceaswellasadegradationof humanity.

yetmadehereinAustraliatosupply ourpeoplewiththedailyreligious newspaper,wecanatalleventsboast ofweeklypaperswhichcomparefavourablywiththebestpublishedinthe oldercountries.Keepingcloseto home,wemaymentionthe"Catholic Press"and"Freeman'sJournal"as rankingamongthepremierreligious newspapersoftheworld.Itisonly fairthatweshouldalsoputinthe samecategorysomewell-knownreligiouspaperspublishedinotherpartsof theCommonwealthandNewZealand. Wouldthatthecirculationofthese paperscould'bevouchedfor,sothat notasingleCatholichomemightbe deprivedofitsweeklymessageofgood tidingsabouttheChurchandheractivities!Asanillustrationoftheservicewhichthereligiousnewspaper canrender,maywequotethehistoric eventthatisbutafewmonthsahead ofus--theInternationalEucharistic Congress.IsthereanyCatholicinall Australasia,whoshouldnottakea specialprideinthefactthatouryoung countryhasbeenselectedasthescene ofthisgloriousreligiousdemonstration?Andhowarewetolearnall aboutit,andprepareforit,and,please God,joininitenthusiastically,ifwe havetodependupontheoccasionalreferencetoittobefoundinthesecular newspapers?

Ipropose,therefore,lendingmypen onthisoccasiontotheneedycauseof Protestantism.Iwanttopointout toourseparated'brethrenthegreat opportunity,theyaremissinginthe discussionevokedbythefiguresregardingchurchattendancerecently publishedinthe"CatholicTimes."
Thosefigures,itwillberemembered, showedastartlingdeclineinthenum'beresfrequentingAnglicanandNonconformistchurches,adeclineallthe morehumiliatinginthattherecordfor thesameperiod-ofCatholicplacesof worshipinthelocalitiesconcerned gaveevidenceofincrease.
Now,thestrangethingisthatevery Protestantcriticwhosecommentwith regardtothisstaeofaffairshascome undermynoticehasmeeklyaccepted churchattendanceasabasisofcomparison,andconsequentlyhasbeen driventotheconclusionthatCatholic: ismismakinggreaterprogress,toput itmildly,thanProtestantism.
Butwhatanoversightwasthis! Wastherenoonetocryoutthatthe testwasunfair?Wasnoeditorial mindquickenoughtodiscoverthat thescaleswereweightedinfavour oftheChurchwhichmakesattendance atMassobligatory?
Anglicanscanperhapsbeexcused forthiscarelessness-theyhaveother thingstothinkaboutjustnow-but whatwasmyfriend,theRev.Thomas Nightingale,SecretaryoftheFree ChurchCouncil,doingthatthispoint ofviewshouldescapehim?
Well,sincenoneofthemseemto haveperceivedtheargumentfordampingdownCatholicoptimism,letme, forthetimebeing,imaginemyselfa Protestantapologist.InthatcapacityIshouldfeelinclinedtosaysomethinglikethis:

Itisnowthirty-twoyearssinceI firstcalledonSisterMaryBerchmans atthecottageConventofSt.Brigid's, WestPerth.Shewastheninher prime,andagreatprimeitwas.Our chatlastedthegreaterpartofanhqur, andIcameawaywithafeelingthatI hadbeenspeakingtoawomanwho toweredabovetheordinaryineverythingthatcounts.Thefriendship thenformedcontinuedtotheend.
Threeyearslatermyworktookme toplacesverydistant,butstillIseldomvisitedPerthevenforashort stay,thatIdidnotcallonher,and gathernewhope,newconfidence,and newstrengthfromthemeeting.
N, Afewweeksafterourfirstmeeting, Ilearnedthrough"TheRecord,"that thelateBishopGibneyvisitedthe Conventandannouncedtoherthatshe hadbeenmadeReverendMotherof thelittlecommunitySheandtheSistersofSt.Brigid's werethenhousedinacottagescarcelylargeenoughforamoderate-sized family;andthoughthedayschoolwas fairlylarge,andtheattendancegood forthattimeinPerth,theequipment leftmuchtobedesired.Theenthusiasm.vigour,andunfailingcourageof theMotherSuperiortriumphedover allobstacles,andinlessthantwoyears thesubstantialconventwhichnow existswasbuilt.Thoughwithlittle fendsatthedisposalofthecommunity.theworkoftheschoolbecamebetterandbettereveryday.Mother Berchmanswaskeentoobtainanyand everynewdevicetoillustratethe teachingofthevarioussubjects;and whenthesedeviceswerebeyondher purse,sheandthegoodSistersimprovisedsomethingwhichdidaswelland oftenbetter.Thusthingsprogressed untilnowSt.Brigid'sisaschoolwhich ismyopinionisnotexcelledbyany schoolinAustralia,orpossiblyinthe wholeearth.AtSt.Brigid'sthereis nowateachingstaffofSistersequalin attainments,inenthusiasm,andin teachingabilitytothatofthebest staffedsch9olsinthisorinanyother stateoftheCommonwealth.Manyof theSisters,whowerelittletoddlersin the(layschoolin1896andlater,have nowUniversitydegrees;andaregivingtheirlivesandabilitiestoeducatingandmakinggoodcitizensofWest Australianchildren.Inthisworkthey knownotcreednorclass.Theschool hasbeenlongrecognisedbytheEducationDepartmentasonewhichscholarshipwinnersmayattendtoreceive asecondaryeducation;andthesuccessoftheschoolhasbeenprovedby everytest,publicorother,thathas beenappliedduringitsexistence.
Weretheschoolideallysituated,its progresswiththemeansatthedisposal ofthefoundresswouldberemarkable. Whenthecrampedgrounds,andthe indifferentbuildingswhichweremade toserveforsolongasaprimaryschool areconsidered,thesuccessisphenomenal.
Twonameswillalwaysbeassociated ithSt.Brigid's--thoseofMonsignor Bourke,betterknownasFather Bourke,andMotherMaryBerchmans. Thegentlemanly,scholarly,'andsaintlyFatherBourkehadhisheartinthe institution.Stronginfaithandin princ;ple.hedidmuchforit;butthe dynamicforcewassuppliedbythe foundress.Nordidsheconfineher worktotheinstitutionitself.Wheneversheheardofsicknessortrouble, shewalkedoftenlongdistancestovisit. conifort.andassistthosewhosuffered. therebyperformingallthegoodoffices fherOrder-theSistersofMercy.She wasnotoneofthosewhoassistedonly thedeserving.Needofhelpwasthe onlythingsheconsidered.Sin,nor shame,norevenseriouscrimedidnot keepheraway.Distresscalledfor aid,andshedidnotstoptoconsider theworthinessorotherwise-ofthedistressed.

Wefindzealamonghereticsforthe spreadoftheirfalsedoctrines.By propagatingheresythedevilthereby deprivessoulsofthebenefitofthe gracestobesecuredintheTrue Church.
Itmustalsobeconfessedthatwe findlittlezealamongOurLord's friendsforthepropagationofthe Faith,andforthewelfareofthe Church.Wemustnot,ofcourse,forgetthattheinterestsofJesusarebest servedbythosewholeadinteriorand oftenhiddenlives.Theseholysouls bytheirprayergandpenantesdo moreforthesalvationofsoulsthan thosewhoareinthelimelight.But thenumberofthoseinteriorsoulsis notgreat.Unfortunately,toomany arecontentwith'mediocrity.
Amongthosewhocoulddomuch intheChurch,orinsociety,wealso noticetoooftenanabsenceofzeal. Worldlingsorganisetheirforcesand usealltheirtalentsforthepromotion oftheirtemporalconcerns.0,why cannotthefriendsofJesushaveas muchzealfortheinterestsoftheSacredHeartasthewickedhavefortheir undertakings!
TheHeartofJesusisthemodelof allthosewhowishtohavetruezeal forthesalvationofsouls.Jesusnever thoughtofHimself,solongasHe couldproMoteHisHeavenlyFather's Glory.Toomanywhoaresupposed tobethefriendsofJesusareafraid ofthecriticismoftheirneighbours, andhencetheyareshyaboutorganisingnewwaystopromotetheinterests oftheSacredHeart.Theproudand zealousPhariseestriedtodestroyOur Lord'seffortsforHisFather'sGlory. ButJesusheededneitherscorn,opposition,norridicule,solongasHedid HisFather'sWill.Bydyingonthe rross,Jesusseemedtotheworldtobe afailure.Inreality,Hissupposed failureWasreallyfitsvictoryoverthe devil.Howmanyareafraidtoundertakeanyworkfortheinterestsof Jesus,forfearoffailureorforfear "ofincurringthereproachoftheirconfreresfortheirso-calledambitiousdesigns!Theapparentfailuremaybe requiredtogaingraceforthesuccess ofthework,justasthefailureof foodFridaywasneededforthesuccessoftheChurchalldownthecenturies.

Divorcedestroysfamilyhappiness, leaveschildrenunprotected,throws theinnocentwifeorhusbandonthe mercyofaselfishworld,andcorrupts societyatitsverysource.TheCatholicChurchgavestabilitytofamily lifethroughthesupernaturalhelpof thesacramentofmatrimony,and throughthesacramentalgracesreceivedbymembersoftheChurchall throughtheirlives.WefindthatdivorceispracticallyunknowninCatholiccountries.Thisisaccountedfor chieflybythereceptionofsupernaturalgracethroughthesacramentalsystemoftheChurch.Thesegracesenableeachonetofulfilhisorherobligationsinlife.Socialreformersnow condemnwageslavery.But,ifmodernslaveryistobeabolished,itcan onlybedonethroughtheinfluenceof theCatholicChurch.Inthereligous ordersoftheChurch,thousandsofpeopleliveacommonlifeandshareall goods.Thesamemaynotbepossible forfamilylife,but,astheChurchwas abletodestroychattelslaverythroughouttheROmanEmpire,shewillfinda solutionforthewageslaveryofmoderncapitalism.Inthedestructionof chattelslaverytheChurchtaughtto theworldtheinherentrightofeach individual.Itwasbytheinculcation ofthesentimentofindividualright thattheCatholicChurchdestroyed slavery.Thereasonforthesuccess oftheCatholicsystemisthatthe churchworksfromwithin.Sheaims attheindividualsanctificationofeach ofhermembers,andshedefendsand definestherightsoftheindividual. ,,n-Catholiccountriesdependedupon prisons.armiesandnaviestobring happinesstopeople.Theyputthe welfareoftheStatebeforeeverything else.TheCatholicChurchtaughtthat eachindividualhascertaininalienable rightswithwhichGovernmentshave nojustclaimtointerfere.Byclaimingforeachpersontherightstowhich hewasentitledbyGod,theCatholic Churchmanagedtosochangepublic opinionthatparentscouldnolonger puttheirchildrentodeath,norcould thewealthykeephumanbeingsas slaves-whichmeantthattheywere treatedasandlookeduponasthe samevalueascattle.TheCatholic Church,byupholdingtherightsof thesickandtheaged,causedtohe raisedupthoseinstitutionsforthecare oftheorphanandthehelpless.It wastheCatholicChurchthaterected thefirsthospitals,forthesick,and,in theseinstitutionsthepoorwerecared for,freeofcharge,throughthecharity 'andzealofthemembersofthereligiousorders.Writersandstudents, bothCatholicand(norr-CatholiO,deplorethealarming.increaseofdivorce isnon-Catholiccountries.Economic studentsandgenuinestatesmenare tryingtofindasolutionforthemany evils'undermoderncapitalism.All 'these dcraitilichgreaterservice

TheIrishNationalForesters'Cricket Clubwasinauguratedatthebeginning oflastcricketseasonbytheBrian BornBranch,Fremantle,forthebenefitoftheyoungermembers.Acommitteewasformed,Mr.F.Webbbeing electedpresident,andMr.J.Sheridan secretary.Thesegentlementhen formedateamwhichwasenrolledin theFremantleSuburbanCricketAssociation.Undertheableguidanceof Mr.R.Lawrence,theteamachieved morethanafairmeasureofsuccess andgainedaplaceinthefinals,being beaten,however,inthefinalbythe BeaconsfieldC.C.afterahardfought game.Thesuccesseswerethemore meritoriouswhenitisconsideredthe narrowscopefromwhichplayershad tobeselected,asonlymembersofthe societywereeligibletoplay.During theseasontheteamconductedseveralcountryruns,picnicsandothersocialfixtures,allofwhichwereunqualifiedsuccessesandhelpedtoplacethe clubinsuchasatisfactoryposition bothsociallyandfinadcially.Social functioninthenatureofhousepartiesanddancesarebeingconducted duringthewintermonths.Thecommitteeespeciallywishtothankthe executivecouncilandBrianBorn Branchfortheencouragementandfinancialsupportsoreadilyaccorded them,andtheladymembersofthe branchwhoseeffortscontributedso largelytothesocialsuccessofthe club.Theteam:

Raphael,stillhauntedbytheremembranceofhisdream,resolvedtopaint whathehadseen.Hesketchedthe MadonnaandChildsuroundedbyangelheads,withthegreencurtain drawnbackonbothsides.St.Sixtus kneltdowninadoration,histiararestingonthealtarledge.St.Barbara occupiedtheothersideofthepainting.Thepicturewascomplete;the visionwasthere,andtherequirements oftheorderfulfilled.Stillsometilingsraswanting.Thebareredge troubledtheartist'seye,tilloneday, goingtohisstudio,hesawtwoboys leaningontheside,lookingintentlyat hiswork.Heseizedthehappymomentandfixedthemonhiscanvasas adoringangels.

Hisimpressionofpreviousvomitsto ItalywasthatthebulkofthemonumenttoVictorEmannuel,whichto hismindblottedoutthewholeofthe Forum,theplacewherethelegendof PaganRomebegan.Itwasveryrewilt,veryVictorian;inotherwordsit wasalittlevulgar,andit"wasputthere tocelebratethatparticularmovement ofaUnitedItaly,whichbeganinthe middleofthe19th.century,andwhich, hethought,wasnowsuperseded.
Agreatmanypeople,hesaid,had theideathattheCaesars,onbecoming Christians,simplyhandedoverthe sceptrestothePopeswhoruledby rightoftheImperialmajestywith whichConstantinehadinvestedtheir religion.

Mr.Chestertonemphasisedthefact thatitwasnottruethattheChurch simplysatonthethroneofCaesar. wieldingitspowerandcontinuinghis tradition,butthattheveryopposite wasthecase.Thegroupknownas Iconoclastswentaboutsmashing statues,andthePoperesistedthem andstoodforthedefenceofart,and notaloneofreligiousart,andhecall-
edintheFranksfromovertheAlva toassisthim.
Romewaswhatitwasto-daynot becausethetraditionofpowerofthe Caesarshadbeenhandeddowntoit, butbecausetherewasthatinitthat didnotdie.
ThePopewokeuptheWestern worldandcalledonittobeckhimup againstthefanaticsoftheEast,and bytakingthatcoursePapalRorie committeditselftoanothersortof dangerandanothersortofdifficulty whichithadexperiencedeversince, butwhichwasinfinitelypreferableea thedangerintowhichtheByzantinb civilisationfellheadlong.
Thelattercivilisationturnedthe EmperorintoaPopeandtherebybecamehopelesslyaStateChurch.Havingsubmittedtotheinfallibilityofa ChristianEmperor,theywerethen overwhelmedbytheconquestofthe MoslemEmperorandhadremained underthat.dominationeversince.
WhathappenedRomeinthewest wasverydifferent.ThePopemaintained,ageafterage,aspiritualdetachment,butonthespiritualsidehe wasbeingperpetuallyharassedbythe passingsecularpowers,andtheyhad thestrangepositionto-dayinwhich thePope,whowascertainlyatthis moment,ingeneral,social,andpoliticalinfluence,themostpowerfu?man intheworld,wasstilltheoreticallya prisoner.Thecivilthreattohim wasalwayschanging,buttheessentialpointwasthathehadmanyenemiesbutneveronemaster.(Applause.)
Theywerelivinginaworldinwhich almostallliteratureandjournalism wassomewhataffectedbywhathe mightcalltheinillenialformofmind. EveryonewaspronetolookatpresentdayaffairsinRomeasifthey werequitecertainthatatanymomenttheywouldturnintosomething absolutelycomicandoverwhelming, andsaythatMussoliniwillopena greatwarbetweenFascistsandBolshevikiallovertheworld.Mussolini, however,hadhadtheexcellentsense, whenthatopinionwasexpressedto him,tosayitwasnonsense,andgave tworeasons:first,becauseFascismo wasathoroughlyItalianthing,and, second,becauseBolshevismwasdead.
TheymustkeepasenseofproportioninregardtoRomanhistoaand bearinmindthefacttherehadbeen
avastnumberofMussoliniinItalian history.Thetraditionofstreetfighting,ofcitiesturningoutinarms againsteachother,wasaveryancient oneintheItalianpeninsulaandthe ideaofadirectdemagogueordictator maltingasweepingchangeandvery oftenareformwasarecurrentthing inItalianhistorya,ItwasnotnecessarytotakesidesandtosaythatMussoliniwastightorwrongan/ngime thanitwasnecessaryinregardoto Rienzi.
WhatbadhappenedinItalywasa violent,antihethoughtverynatural, thoughnotprobablyabsolutelyjust, reactionagainstcertainParliamentary anddiplomaticcorruptionfromwhich allnationshadsuffered,thesenseof strongpatriotsthattheircountrywas beingperpetuallybetrayedbyprofessionalpoliticians,andthefearthat someofthesepoliticiansmighttake advantageofthegrosssocialinjustice thatexistedinmodernindustrial citiestoraiseabloodtumultofBolshevism.:Seeingthatdanger,certain peopleactedonit,andhewascertain thatitwaswelltorememberofhow longandvariedahistorytheyformed apart,andwhateverelsetheydidthey shouldnotbelievethatMussoliniwas goingtoengageinawlkthatwould endwar,orarebelliontoendrevolution.
Thatlastrevolution,itseemedto him,didmoregoodthanharm,but noneofthemneeddividethemselves passionately.
