Timeandthetideofeventscrowd fastuponus.AyearagoinAustria onesawsightsthatareindescribable. Agreatpeople,oncesaidtobethe proudestinalltheworld,stoodlace tofacewiththehorriblespectreof despair.MillionsofAustrians,peopleverymuchlikethecommonrun offolkeverywhere,hadsunktothe verylowestdepthsofmisery.Hungerandothersufferingofthemost piteouskindwerewidespread.The nationalGovernment,ameremakeshift,lackingstability,powerlessto commandortodirect,stoodtottering onthebrinkofdisaster.Therewas aohopeinanybodyanywhere.There wasevidentonallsidesasortofcontenteddespair.Peopleseemedtobe waitingfortheinevitablecrashwhich wouldlaywastethelastvestigeofthe glorythatoncewasAustria's.

LastJuneinViennatherewereall sortsofwildrumoursintheair.Conservativepeople,fearfulandshrinking, talkedopenlyofrevolution,bloodshed,fire,sabotage,murder.Great crowdsweretobeseen..wilyparading throughtheprincipalwalksofthecity withoutsoundofmusic,butwithred flags,flyinginthebreeze.Atone stageoftheproceedingsitwasnextto impossibleeithertoenterortoleave theterritorywhichisallthatisleft oftheGreatEmpire.Therewere strikesontherailwaysandstrikeson thesteamboatswhichplytheglorious Danube.Theelectriclightandpower farthegreatcityhadbeendiscontinued.Thepostalandtelegraphemployeeshadwalkedoutenmassewhen theirdemandsontheGovernmentfor anincreasedwagehadbeenrefused. Therewerenonewspapers,nocoalor wood,nofreshfoodofanykind.Then, asiftocrownallthenationalmisery, camethereportfromthenorththat theCzechsweremobilisingtheirarmy.

So,too,orsothereportshadit,were theYugo-SlaystotheSoutheastand theItaliansontheshoresoftheAdriatic.AhighGovernmentofficialin ViennatoldanumberoftheAmerican presscorrespondentsthattheItalian armywouldbepolicingthestreetsof thecity"beforetheweekisout."

TheGreatCalm.

Then,ofasudden,cameagreatcalm. Asmallgroupofwhite-facedmenwith bloodshoteyesemergedfromaconferenceinthelittletownofGratz.

Theyweretheleadersoftheseveral politicalfactionsofAustriagathered togetherinonelastefforttostaveoff. ifimpossible,theimpendingdisaster.

TherewereSocialistsinthegroupand ChristianSocialists,Pan-Germans,the Workmen'sDelegates,andanumber ofothers,allstirredtothedepthsof theirsoulswiththehorrorofthedangerwhichthreatenedthem.There werebigmeninthatconferencewho sawclearlytheinevitabletragedy whichwassuretofollowifAustria wentdown.Notonce,itwassaid, sincethebirthoftheRepublichad thesefactionistsagreeduponanything. Rutnowitwasdifferent.Allwas changed.Theycameforthwitha newGovernment,anewStatepolicy, andanewpremier.The,weremakingalaststand.Theybadcometo knowatlastthatotta-byunifiedac tionwasthereanynussiblechancefor nationalpreservationandlife.And withthisuppermostintheirminds, theyhadagreedtostandtogetheror, ifsoitweretobe,tofall.

HewhonowservesatWashingtonas thespecialcorrespondentof"America" wasselectedtocarryoutoneofthe firstcommissionsissuedbyMonsignor Seine!asMinister-President.Tothe foreigncorrespondentsatViennathere hadcomeahintbywayoftheforeign officeinthe"Ballhansplatz"thatthe Monsignorwasonthelookoutfora "distinguishedAmericantravellingin Europe."whowassaidtoknowAustriaandherpeoplelongandintimately.Thecorrespondents.atnumerous sessionsinorneartothebarofthe HotelBristol,hadarrivedattheconclusionbywhatwassaidtobe,a"prorestofelimination"-thatthemanwantedwasaprominentNewYorkbanker, whoisgreatlyinterestedintheAustrianStateoperaanditsartists.He wasknown,tohavepromised"totryto dosomething"forAustriabywayof raisingaloanintheUnitedStates. ,reanwhile,ithascometootherears thatwhatthenewMinister-President wantedwasnotsomuchcashascounsel.Hesoughtfirsttoestablisha definitepolicyandlineofaction.His mindwasopentosuggestionsandadviceastothebestmethodstobepursuedunderhisadministration.The Americanhesoughtwasoneinwhose judgmentanumberoftheAustrian lendershadagreatdealofconfidence, thoughhisidentitywasshroudedwith muchsecrecy.Intalkingwiththe correspondents,MinisterSeipel,while seekingtoavoidgivingthenameof themuch-soughtperson,unwittingly droppedawordwhichgaveoneofthe a.ernal'stspresentaclue.Withthis toworkon,byaprocessofelimination allhisown,thenewspapermanfixed upon"theAmericanpriest.""The Americanpriest"hadreceivedpartof histraininginAustria.Heknew AustriaandtheAustrianswell,and longandhadhelpedthem,throughthe generosityofAmericanfriends,tothe extentofseveralhundredthousand dollars.TheAustriansknewhim,too, endtrustedhim.Inadditiontoall this,itwasknownthattheAmerican priestwaswellinformedonanumber ofEuropeanmattersandhadtheentre tohalfadozenEuropeanchancellories.

Thatnight.afterawhisperedword withtheMinister-President,amuchtravelledandgreatlyoverworkednewspapermanfoundhimselfonboardthe onlytrainoutofViennagoingwesttheinternationalexpress"Bucharestto Paris-mannedbyaFrenchcrewand crowdedtothedoorswithasweating, panickyandoverwroughthumancargo.Inhispocketwasanexequatur intheformofanotetotheAmerican priesturginghispresenceinVienna withoutaminute'sdelay.Thecommissionwasasortofcarry-a-messageto-Garciaventure."Findhimwhereverheis."chargedtheMinister-President."andbringhimhereassoon aspossible."Then,withsomething akintoasmileinhistiredeyes,he added:"Don'tyoudareshowuphere againunlessyoufindhim."

Iknow,andallyourfriendsinAustria willknow,thatwithallyourboasted friendshipforthesesufferingpeople youfailedtheminthegreatcrisis.

PuttingTheirHeadsTogether.

Withintwenty-fourhourstheMinister-PresidentandtheAmericanpriest wereseatedfacetofaceintheChancellor'sofficeinVienna.Theysata longwhileandtalkedandtalkedand talked.ItwasearlyonSundaymorning.Whatpassedbetweenthemthis writerdoesnotknow.Nostatement, formalorinformal,washandedtothe press.Nocommentontheconferencewasevermadeinanynewspaper.Fortunately,priestshavea wayofgettingoilearlyinthemorning whilemostpresscorrespondentssleep untilnoon.Onewhomighthave madea"scoop"ofthewholestorywas leftontheoutside,pledgedtosecrecy andremindedpointedlyofhisobligationtohearMassonSundays.

AfterthatconferenceMinisterSeipel wasachangedman.Heseemedtobe stronger.Helostsomethingofthat tiredlook.Hiseyeswerebrighter. Heappearedtobemoreconfident, morehopeful.Helaughedandjoked foramonththereafter.Hewasfilledtothebrimwithoptimism.Everybodynotedthechangeandwondered. Beforehestartedonhisswingabout EuropewhichbroughtupatGeneva hesaidtothecorrespondents:"Itcan hedone.WecanyetsaveAustria. Wecanandwemust."

Itlooksnowasthoughhehadaccomplishedhisend.Alltheinformationwehaveathand,andsomeofit comesfromoldfriendswhoare"inthe know"inEurope'sgameofempire, pointstothefactthatAustriahasbeen saved.Itisthemiracleoftheage.

Itisreallydumbfounding.Oneyear agoifoneweretopredictwhathas cometopassinAustriaduringthe pastsixmonths,onewouldhavebeen adjudgedinsane.Andyet,ithasall comeaboutasAustria'sfriendshad hopeditwould.Forallofwhich, DeoGratias.

LeonardTwiggswamthreemilesin MoretonBayonEasterSunday.He andfourotheryoungmenspentthe Easterholidaysboatinginthebay.On EasterSundaytheirboatwascapsized byastrongwind.Thefivemen,who clungtotheupturnedboat,werein sightofSt.Helena,andcouldevensee thepeopleontheisland,butwere unabletoattracttheirattention. Twiggsawtherewasonlyonething besttodo,bravelytoswimtothe PileLightandinformthekeeperof theaccident.Thewaterwasinfested withsharksandtheseawasvery choppy.Delaymeantthattheboat woulddriftouttosea,soTwiggbade hismatesgood-byeandswamforthe light,whichhesucceededinreaching. Assistancewasgot,andTwiggsawhis comradesbroughttosafety.

ThedeathoccurredatWaggalast monthofDr.WilliamLeahy,oneof thebest-knownprofessionalmeninthe Riverinadistrict.Atthebeginning ofthemonththedoctorhadasudden seizure,andalthoughhisconditionfor somedayswasveryserious,hishealth improved,andhisdeathwasunexpected.Half-an-hourbeforehisdeath hewasfullyconscious,andwasconversingwithhisdaughter.Dr.Leahy was63yearsofage,andwasbornat Listowel,CountyKerry,Ireland.He studiedmedicineatDublinUniversity, graduatingfromtherewiththedegree ofM.D.Laterhesecureddiplomasat EdinburghandGlasgow,inbothof whichtownshepractised.In1896he cametoAustralia,andforthreeyears engagedinhisprofessionatCrookwell.Hethenpurchasedthepractice ofDr.MorganO'ConnoratWagga, andhadresidedtheresince.Eighteen yearsagohemarriedMissNellieDonnelly,adaughterofthelateJames

Mr.PeterJageurs,wellknownin IrishNationalcirclesthroughoutthe Commonwealth,andfounderofthe firmJageursandSon,Proprietary, Ltd.,monumentalmasons,Parkville, diedonAugust24,aged89years.The deceasedwasanativeofTullamore, Ireland.HewasthefirstmonumentalsculptortointroducetheCeltic Cross,inavarietyofforms,toAustraliancemeteries.Hewasnotedinhis youthforsuperiorityinIrishfield sports,notablyinwrestling,leaping, andthrowingtheheavystone.He wasamanofverypowerfulphysique, andyetveryactiveinhismovements.

TheevictionsonLordDigby'sestate,nearTullamore,ledtosomehundredsofmen,womenandchildrenemigratingtoQueenslandatthesuggestion andundertheguidanceofthelate FatherPatrickDunne,V.G.,ofAlbury,N.S.W.,whohadbeenattached toSt.Francis'Mission,Melbourne,in 1850. ItwastheRightRev.James O'Quinn,thefirstBishopofBrisbane, whoconceivedtheideaofintroducing TrishimmigrantstoQueensland.The organisationwasentrustedtoFather Dunne.Betweentheyears1861and 1866,tenvesselsconveyed6.000Irish settlerstoQueensland.Theygave aniqgnenseimpetustothesuccessful developmentofthatcolony,aswellas toitsinfantChurch.

Mr.Jageurs,accompaniedbyhis wifeandtwochildren,arrivedinRockhamptonbythesailingship"Landsborough,"onMay8,1865. Helater workedathistradeinBrisbane,and tookanactivepartinpioneeringIrish andCatholicaffairsinthatembryo city.Hecontributedlargelytothe electionofthelateDr.KevinIzod ('Doherty,of"'48"fame,tothe QueenslandLegislatureinAugust, 1867. HelatertransferredhisenergiestoSydney,whereheworkedon thebuildingofSt.Mary'sCathedraL lletookpartinthemeetingofprotest againstthepassingofSirHenry Parkes'TreasonFelonyAct,which thatPremierintroducedaftertheattackuponthelifeoftheDukeofEdinburghatClontarf,Sydney,onMarch 12,1868.Hewasoneofthelocalreceptioncommitteeofthe"'67'politicalprisonersreleasedfromWest Australia,andsawthemajorityof themofftoSanFrancisco,inOctober. i869,fromSydneyHarbour.

In1870,hebroughthisfamilyto MelbourneandsettledinNorthCarlton.Hetookanactivepartinthe receptionin1883ofthefirstIrishenvoys,thelateJohnandWillieRedmond,M's.P.,butsincethatperiodlivedalmostinseclusion,thoughmaintainingakeenandpracticalinterest inprogressivelegislationfortheben& fitofhisnativeland.Hiswifedied in1914. Largecrowds,whichrivalledthose ofpreviousyears,attendedtheannual pilgrimagetoCroaghPatrick.Many person-ascendedthepeak,wherethey remainedinprayerandfasting throughoutthenight.Intheearly morningtheywerejoinedbymany others.Thedrenchingdrizzlethat sweptthepeakfailedtodampthereligiousfervourofthepilgrims,many ofwhomunderwentexercisesonthe summitworthyoftheworstofthe PenalDays.

Buttherainmadetheascentthe mostdifficultexperiencedforthepast 25years.

Confessionswereheldintheopen andbetween2,000and3,000received HolyCommunion,someaslateasmidayandmostofthemwerebadlysoakedandhadpartakenofnofoodsince thepreviousnight.

Amongstthepilgrimswasagoodly numberofFreeStateofficersandsoldiers,thelattercarryingknapsacks. Major-GeneralSeanMcKeonwaspresent. Thenumberofmotorvehiclestilying betweenWestportandthefootofthe peekwasthelargesteverseen,and specialtrainsbroughtbigcontingents fromDublin,Athlone,Mullingar,Claremoms,etc.TheLimericktrainbrought inover900passengers,whilethenumberontheSligotrainwasaboutthe largest.Theregulationofthetraffic inWestportandbetweenthereand MurriskbymembersoftheCivic Guardwashighlypraisedonallsides. Thepreacherdealtwiththereligious persecutionsthat,hesaid,forintensity, fiercenessanddevotionwereunparalleledintheannalsofChristianity.But theFaithwithstoodthebarbaritiesof theCromwellianregime,therepressive measuresofthepenalcode,andthe horrorsofthefamineperiod.

Thepreacher,dealingparticularly withwhattheIrishpeopleendured duringthefamineyears,saidwhat happenedintliefrcasethenreminded oneofwhatHappenedinthedaysof OurLord,whenHefedthemultitude inthewildernessbymultiplyingthe loavesandfishes.Drivenfromtheir richpossessionsbytheenemiesoftheir religion,theIrishpeoplesacrificed everything,butthroughtheintercessionofIreland'sPatronSaintthey werepreservedtohandthepriceless boonoffaithtofuturegenerations.

"NomoresignalproofofGod'slovingprovidenceinregardtotheIrish race,"continuedthepreacher,"no clearerevidenceoftheefficacyofPatrick'sprayershaseverbeengranted thanthatofwhichweourselveshave beenwitnesses.Abovethedinof battletherewasbornetotheirearsa voiceliketothevoiceoftheIrish heardbyPatrickofold.Itwasthe voiceofthePaganChinesecalling uponthechildrenofPatricktocarry thegoodnewstothatdistantland.

Facilitiesfordivorce,Ned-Malthusian practices,theunrestrainedfreedomof modernlife,andmanyothercauses tendtobreakupthehome.Abrief statementofsomepointsofCatholic doctrineonthehomewillfurnishmatterforseriousconsideration,and,I hope,tendtostaydisruptivetendencien. Mystatementistakenchieflyfrom thenewCodeofCanonLaw,andIwill trytomakeitasclearaspossible, withoutrhetoricoruselessamplificationonmypart.JesusChrististhe architectoftheChristianhome.His teachingsandexamplelaidthefoundationsofit.

ItrestsonChristianmarriage.Christianmarriageissomethingmorethana merenaturalunionbetweenamanand awoman.Itisalife-longunionbetweenbaptisedChristians,anditis oneoftheSevenSacramentsofthe ChristianChurch.Becauseit.isa Sacrament,itisasignofholiness,and itproducesholinessinthosewhoreceiveitworthily.Moreover,_itisa figureoftheindissolubleandholy unionwhichexistsbetweenChristand HisBride,theChurch.Canon1013 tellsusthattheprimaryendofmarriageIstheprocreationandeducation ofchildren;thesecondaryendismutualhelpandsociety,andaremedy againstpassi6n.Sometimesitmay notbepossibletohavechildren,but eventhenmarriageisjustifiedand madelawfulbytheexistenceofthe

Theprocreationofchildrenisthe naturalaimandobjectofmarriage, "whence,"saystheCatechismofthe CouncilofTrent,"marriedpersons whobydrugseitherpreventconceptionorprocureabortionareguiltyof amostheinouscrime;forthisisto beconsideredanimpiousconspiracy ofmurderers."InhisEncyclicalLetteronMarriageLeoXIII.taughthow thisprimaryendhadbeenexaltedand sanctifiedbyChrist."Therehasbeen vouchsafed,"hesaid,"tothemarriage unionahigherandnoblerpurpose thanwaseverpreviouslygiventoit. HencetheimportanceofgivingareligiousandmoraleducationtoChristianchildreninaccordancewiththeir Faith.AsCanon1113teaches:"Parentsareboundbythestrictestobligationtoprovidefortheirchildrenas faraspossiblebothreligiousandmoral aswellasphysicalandcivileducation., andalsotoprovidefortheirtemporalgood."Canon1372laysspecialstress onpositivereligiousandmoraltraining."Allthefaithfularetobetrainedfromchildhoodinsuchawaythat notonlyisnothingtobegiventhem whichishostiletotheCatholicreligionandtopurityofmorals,butreligiousandmoraltrainingshouldhold thefirstplace."AccordingtoSection2ofthesameCanon,notonly parents,butallthosewhoareinthe placeofparents.havetherightandthemostseriousdutyoftakingcare thattheirchildrenreceiveaChristian education.Aconsequenceofthese principlesisdrawnbyCanon1374.This CanonforbidsCatholicchildrentobe senttonon-Catholic,neutral,ormixed
