PresidentCosgrove,whowasloudly cheered,remarkedthatsomebodyin thecrowdhadaskedwhydidthey shoottheprisoners.Theyshotnoprisonerswithoutgivingnoticeto thoseinrevoltagainstthenationalwill thatafteracertaindaytheywould beexecutediffoundinarmsagainst theIrishpeople.

AskedwhataboutRoryO'Connor, thePresident'sanswer,whichwascheered,was:"WegavenonoticebecausenonoticewasgiventoSean HalesorPadraigO'Maillewhenguns werepulledonthem.Thereisaresponsiblejuryinthecountrytowhom weareresponsible.andinashorttime theywillfindusguiltyornotguiltyof anydelinquencythatisbrought againstus."AddressingtheinterrupterthePresidentsaid:"Ifyou thinkyouhaveanychargeagainstus, nowisthetimetomakeit.

"DuringthetimewhenIwent throughDublinIcarriedinmepocket somethingIwasgoingtouse,andI willguaranteethistoyou,that1could useitbetterthanyoucould.When thenecessityaroseIusedit.andnot behindaditchorunderthebed,"he addedamidcheers.

Themadnessofthelast12months oughttostop.Thosepeopleought togetsenseandjoininwiththerest ofthepeople,andnotimitatetheactionsofthoseintheNorthEast,who hadtemporarilyisolatedthemselves fromthecountry.

AFatefulMeeting.

Thecommentmadebythe"SouthernCross"concerningthe.activitiesof thesesectsisasfollows:

Theiropponentscirculatedthe storyrecentlythattheGovernment attackedtheFourCourtsbecausethey wereorderedtodosobytheBritish. "IwaspresentattheCabinetmeeting,"continuedthePresident."There wasnoletterreadatthatmeeting fromtheBritishGovernment.

"Therewasonlyonereport:the seizureofageneralintheNational Army,GeneralO'Connell,andhisincarcerationintheFourtCourts.We issuedaproclamationtothemenis theFourCourtstohanduptheprisonerandtoquitthepremises.Itwas refused.WeattackedtheFour Courts.Youknowwhathashappenedsince.

"Pricelessmanuscriptsandpriceless recordswerestoredthere.andalthoughnoticewasgivennostepswere takentoremovethemtosafety,and theyweredestroyed,amonumentto theinefficiencyoftheinefficieras."

SometimeagowhensomeIrishmen wereontrialinEnglandtheyrecognisedthecourts,andIsupposeifour friendinthecrowdwerebroughtbeforeoneofourcourtshewouldrefusetorecogniseit,andprobablyif hewerefoundguiltyhewouldgoon hunger-strike.IwilltellyouwhatI toldthepeopleofKilkenny12months ago: "Ifanymanoranywomanisfound guiltyofanychargeunderthecourts administeredunderDailEireann,if 1haveanyresponsibilityintheGovernment,andtheyseektoavoidjusticebyhunger-striking,theywilldoit attheirownperil."

Thenation,heproceeded,wasnow onitstrial.Theyhadalotofdamagetorepair,andmuchleewayto makeup.Theycouldnotnowblame anypeopleforinterferingwiththem. Eventheinterruptorswouldadmit theallegationsmadeagainstthe Treatyhadbeenfalsified.Theywere toldtheBritishwouldneverleave; nowtheyhadgone.Theyweretold theywouldhaveanEnglishmanGovernor-General.theyhadnot;theyhad hisExcellencyTimothyMichael Healy. AWordtotheMinority.

Theyallknewwhathemeantwhenhe toldtheminasecretsessioninti.. SpeakingatNaas,Mr.Blythe(MinisterforLocalGovernment).saidifthe peopleturneddowntheGovernment itwouldbeanencouragementtothe menwhodumpedtheirgunstorenew hostilitiesandawarningtoanypartieswhoformedaGovernmentand stoodformajorityrulethatthey,too. wouldbeturneddown.

"Twoofthelatestreligionsfontthe UnitedStates,bothwithun-Christian andperniciousdoctrines,arethe ChristianScientistsandtheTheosophists.Thereareaboutthirtycollegesforboysandgirls,conductedby Protestants-agoodnumberofthe pupilsattendingtheseschoolsareCatholics;alsotwoBiblesoe.-ties,a prifitingofficeandorphaaaj....The YoungMen'sChristianAssociation haveeachacentreinthecity.The formerclaimsamembershipofmore than3,800(alargenumberofwhom areCatholics);theincomeisabout £80.000ayear.Thesesosietieewererecentlycondemnedbytheecclesiasticalauthorityfortheirprose!etising methods.

Thetrialofthemenwhocamenear killingMaximilianHardenshowed thatthedirectoroftheplotdidnot knowfremwhomthemoneycamefor his"expenses."Itreachedhimby generaldeliverymail.

Always,ordersfortheseGroupsof Fivearrivemysteriously.Somecentralbureaupullsthestrings.And"Konsul"keepsitssecrets.Theactualculpritsmaybecaught,inany caseofmurder;butthislooseformof organisationshieldsthemenwhoset themachineryinmotion.Thatis whathappenedinthecaseofWalter Rathenau.And,undoubtedly,itwill happenagainto-morrow.For"Konsul"hasnotrunitscourseinGermany. Itisstrongest,thisalliance,inthose partsofGermanywheremonarchism andreactionhavetheupperhand.EspeciallyinEastPrussia.Infact,so farastheorganisationhasahistory, thatiswherethestorystarts.Four yearsago,aneventlongsinceforgottenintheswirloflaternews,theGermansofEastPrussiamadeanattempttorecovertheBalticprovinces whichtheTreatyofVersailleshadbestowedoncertainsmallernations. Forthatadventureseveralthousand soldiersofthedisbandedarmyvolunteered.Forthemostparttheywere professionalfightingmen,withno corpslefttojoin:theywereattracted, too,bythepromiseofaparcelofland incasetheenterprisesucceeded.That landtheyneverwon.Fortheadvancefailed.ButthegreatlandownersofEastPrussia,thefamous "junkers,"sawinthesemenanexcellentbody-guardagainsttheencroachmentofanyformofSocialism. howevermild.Andtheybeganto 4employthejoblessvolunteersas "farm-hands.""Farm-hands"theyremainto-day-thoughinrealitythey aresoldiers.Theyarewellarmed. Foritisanopensecretthatavery fairamountofwarmaterialisstill heldbythemonarchistjunkers. Itisaroundthisnucleusthat"Konsul"wasconstructed.Itispossible, to-day,toboastopenlyofaffiliation withtheorder,inanypartsofEast Prussia.Itwouldhavebeenpossible tomakethesameboastanywhere,had notasecondfamousputschended evenmoredisastrously.Thiswasthe unsuccessfulattemptofthemilitary partytoseizeBerlin,inthespringof 1920,andtoreestablishmonarchism.

Commandingamachine-gunbrigade inthatstruggle,thewriterrecalls,was acertainCaptainEhrhardt.Ifthe affairhadanyhero,continuesMr. Merz: ToEhrhardtfellthatrole.When theputschfailed,andthespirititrepresentedwasdrivenunderground, therebegantospreadthroughGermanyasecretorderthatcalleditself, atfirst,"OrganisationC"-andlater tookthenameof"Konsul,"because

cornpli,cannolongerbeinvoked.

Konsul"wasthenicknameofthe celebratedEhrhardt.Initsgrowth thisorderhadthesupportofthespiritualbrethrenofthe Prussian junkers, everywhere:theblood-and-thunder militarist%the100percent.monarchists.andatleastonefactionof thegreatindustrialism(thoughthat factiondidnotincludethepowerful HerrStinnes)

"Konsul"grewapaceinthethree yearsthatfollowed.OutsideofEast Prussiaitisstrongest-againwhere reactionitselfisstrongest-inBavaria andMecklenburg.Itputsitsfaith inmilitarism:ralliesloyallytothe monarchists:whipsupariotofhatred againsttheJews.HowmanyofGerman'spoliticalmurdersaredirectly theresultofitsactivities,thereisno telling.Oneofthemenwhokilled Rathenauconfessedthathewas"actingunderordersfromasecretsociety";anotherwasanerstwhilememberoftheEhrhardtbrigade.Ehrhardt himselfisbeingheldinprisonona chargeofcomplicityintheaffair.

Again,themenwhokilledErzbergeradmittedlybelongedto"Konsul." Sodidthemenwhoattemptedtokill Scheidemannbythrowingprussicacid inhisface.Asfortherest,itis largelyamatterofconjecture.Some lightisthrownonthezealof"Konsul"bythisclause,reportedongood authority(Dr.Gumbel,Berlin,"Four YearsofPoliticalMurder")tobethe bulwarkofitsfaith:"Traitorswillbe dealtwithbythesecretbloodtribunal."

"Traitors"isawayofsaying"democrats."

Like"Orgesch,"again,isthe"Schutz nodTrutzbund,"whichconcentrates itsfireontheJews.Itsmembership runsaboveahundredthousand.Then thereisthe"JungdeutscherOrden," somewhatsmaller,butwellorganised inmilitaryunits.The'Alldeutscher Bund."equallysecretinitsmembership,issomewhatmorepublicinits aims:itfranklywantstheHohenzollernsbackagain.

The"RossbachOrganisation,"head edbyLieutenantRossbach,whoseac tivitieshaverecentlycommandedinternationalattentionasaresultofthe revelationsoftheMinisteroftheInterior,Dr.Severing,isanotherofthese conspiracies-connectedwiththesocalled"GermanLibertyParty."

Alltold,thereareatleastfiftyorganisationsinGermanythatfollow "Konsul's"lead.Itishardtokeep themseparate.For,exceptwhere theyarestrongenoughtodefythe nationalgovernment,asinsomesectionsofEastPrussiaitisgoodtacticsforthemtokeepchangingnames,headquarters,passwords,everything.Everything,ofcourse,except theiraims.Tothosetheycling.Revenge,Reaction,andtheRestoration oforderwhosedayislongpast.

Thattheseterrorbundsarefactors tobereckonedwithiscertain.We inAmericadonotknowasmuch aboutthemasweshould,tohavean understandingoftheforcesnowin conflict.Andyetthereisadanger. inhandlingsuchmaterialasthis,of strayingfromarealisticsenseof values.Ihavehearditsaid,forinstance,thattheseorganisationsare therealgovernorsofGermany;that theygridironthewholecountrywith afinenetofespionage:thattheyfuse incommonsocialbrigandageatleast amilliondesperatemen,

dozendifferentorders.Probablythe estimatefor"Konsul"aloneissufficienttoincludethewholefamilyof terrorists.

ThosewhohavehadanopportunityofcomingintouchwiththeintellectualeliteofFranceduringthelast fifteenyears,havebeendeeplyimpressedbythementalityoftherising generation.Oneofitsleadersspoke ofitmostexactly,whenhesaid:"We mustreturntothefaithofourancestorsandtaketheirpartagainstour fathers."Theyoungmenwhocame tomanhoodabouttheyear1890were altogetherdifferentfromthoseofthe precedinggeneration,whohadseen thedefeatof1871,andhadretained whathascometobeknownasthe "mentalityofthevanquished."The skepticismofErnestRenan,andthe so-calledscientismofthepositivists, didnotsatisfythedevelopingminds ofthenewgeneration.

"TobetrulyFrench,wemustbeCatholics,"wastheconclusionofthe famous"Inquiry,"madein1910by Massis,underthepen-nameofAgaton. Itwouldseemthatthesevotingmen hadapresentimentofwhatwasgoing totakeplace."Noussommesune generationsacrifice,"saidoneofthem, arepresentativeoftheCatholicrevivalamongtheintellectuals,sometimesbeforethewarbrokeout.And neverwasanheroicpresentimentmore strikinglyrealised.Thesupremesacrificemadebymanyindefenseof countryhasbroughtforthwonderful results.LetuslookatFrancetodayandstudythefruitsoftheir effort.

LeavingoutofconsiderationParis andAlsace-Lorraine,forwhichnostatisticshaveasyetbeenmade,there areinFrancetenmillionferventCatholic'sinapopulationofthirty-four millions.ByferventCatholics,I meanthosewhoperformregularlyall theirreligiousdutiesandreceiveCommunionatleastfourtimesayear.

Seventeenmillionmorehadbeenbaptised.andattendchurchmoreorless regularly.Thusonlysevenmillion areindifferent,andamongthemvery fewarebigoted.Itisinthelarge citiesthatthereturntoCatholicism ismostevident.OfParismuchthat isderogatoryhasbeensaid,but,tobe fair,wemustalsosaymuchthatis complimentary.TherearefourhundredthousandstrangersinParis, manyofthemarenotparticularlyinclinedtopiety,yetsixmillionHoly Communionsaredistributedannually toapopulationoffourmillioniSeople. ThecontributionsofCatholicsto theirparishesamountannuallyto threemillionfrancs.In1905there wereinParisanditssuburbsonehundre,1andfifty-three'churchesand chapels:inthefirstmonthsof1922 thereweretwohundredandtwo.

Intheentirecountry,thereareat presenttwelvethousandCatholic schools,employingtwenty-ninethousandteachers,andgivinginstruction toamillionchildren.Weshouldalso recallthatlastyearFrancegavefive millionfrancstothePropagationof theFaith,thetotalamountcontributedbytheCatholicsof_thewholeworld beingtwenty-threemillion.Accordingtothelateststatistics,Franceis stillgivingtwo-thirdsoftheCatholic missionariesoftheworld.Thisproves conclusivelythattheFreemasons,duringthefiftyyearsoftheirsupremacy, eveniftheydidde-Christianisethe landtosomeextentbymeansoftheir laicisedschoolsystem,wereultimately unsuccessful,sincemostofthepopulationremainsCatholic.

Asearlyas1910.someoftheschol,-,madeuptheirmindstobecome betteracquaintedwiththeChurch. TheCatholicshaveorganisedthemselvesintoanassociationwhichettendsMassinabodyeverySunday intheChurchofSt.Etienne.whichis situatednexttotheschool.The averageattendanceistwohundred.In thesamechurch,theCatholic"Polytechnicians"andthegraduatesmake theirEasterdutyeachyear.In1912. therewerefivehundredandfifty:in 1022,ninehundred.Retreatshave W.,beenheldforthestudents:the onegivenlastyearwasattendedby two'hundredandfour.Lastly,of everynormalgraduation'classoffrom twohundredandsixtytothreehundred,tenareJews,tenProtestants, andsixtyareverygoodCatholics. Ihavemadethesesomewhatlei.gthyquotationsnotsomuchbecausecf whattheauthoristryingtosetforth, asbecauseoftheacknowledgeddiscontenttowhichIreferredattheoutsetofthispaper,andofwhatthatdiscontentmaymeantotheultimate destinyofProtestantism.

Moreandmorethe"modernist"is makinginroadsonallnon-Catholicdenominations.The"fundamentalist' who.howeverdefectivehisotherbeliefs,isyetsoundinhisChristology anddeeplyattachedtothePersonof theGod-Man,istoagreaterand greaterextent.beingpushedoutand madetofeel'thattwentieth-century Protestantismisnottheplaceforhim.

Sohedreamsof"anall-inclusiveCatholicChurch(which/willreplacethe hundredandonecontendingsects,"a Churchwithauthoritytospeakand powertoimpelallegiance.Rome risesmajesticallybeforehisvision, andhefainwouldseeinhertheobject ofhisdreams,but-notyet!Hegoes furtherthanmostofhiscoreligionists ingivingherthepraisehedoes.Do not,myCatholicreader,faulthimtoo greatlyifhedoesnotseeclearlythat Romeistheonlyexplanationofhis difficulty;thatonlybyacknowledg- ingherclaimtothefullcanhereceive thatforwhichheisseeking;thatonly inthePapacyhashetheauthorityfor whichhelongs;thatonlyintheOne, Holy,Catholic,ApostolicandRoman Churchresidesthepower'ofChristand therighttocommandtheintellectsof men.Protestantismeveninitsless bitterformshasseriouslywarpedthe lineofthoughtinitsadherentsand hastakenawaytheabilitytothink straight,sothatthoseprofessingit cannoteasilybridgethechasmswhich theprejudiceandthemaliceoftheir ancestorshavediggedbetweenthemandGod'struth.Thatonesonurturedshould*seethevisioneven "throughaglassdarkly"ismuch.His admissionsforeshadowthedaywhen Protestantismshallhaverunits course,andallmenwhoarereally Christianswillbeenrolledunderthe banneroftheChurchthatwasfoundedbyChrist.

Itmaybethatthewholeworldwill neverbeconverted.OurLordrather seemstoindicatethat,andweknow that"thereshallarisefalseChrists.and falseprophets."whowilldrawmany afterthem,assumingtheChristian namebutdenyingitspower."The "modernist"willgohisway,hewill seducesome,anddrawingthemaftera Christofhisowninvention,willlead themwithhimselftoperdition,but the"fundamentalist,"lovingJesusand believingHiminverytruthtobeGod Incarnate,willofnecessityseekthat ChurchinwhichHisineffablepresenseresides.Thequestion."Will ProtestantismBeOverthrown?"seems answerableintheaffirmative,ifwe consideritasreferringtoProtestantisminthesenseofaChristiansystem. Thename"Protestantism"willlikely

survive,butitwillultimatelybecome non-Christianinanyhistoricsense,a leakyandsinkingship,whichthoSe whohavetheSpiritofWisdomwill haveabandonedfortheArkofSafety.

Saturday.August25th.hadbeen longlookedforwardtobyallthe Seniors.TheAssociationmatches wereover,andtheever-popularcolour competitionwastocommenceonthat date.Threeteams.hadbeenpicked up,captainedbyJ.Guhi.J.Clune, arsiM.Campbell,respectively,sowhen Saturdayarrivedwithheavydownposrsofrainandthefirstmatchhad tobepostponedtillthenextday,not alittledisappointmentwasfelt.Sunday,however,thoughovercastand windy,proveddry,andthefirstmatch betweenClune'sandGuhl'steamwas played.Thetwocaptainswereunavoidablyabsent.andJackButler. IntheworldoflabourtheinstitutionofFascisttradeunionswiththeir halfmillionmembers,includingboth workersandemployers,hasresponded tothecountry'scrisisbysupplanting classwarwithco-opergtionbetween capitalandlabour.

Despitethefactthatthepeopleof theUnitedStateshavedeclaredthemselvesagainstthatkindofinternationalismwhichinvolvesparticipation inthetortuousinanoeuveringofEuro. peanpoliticalaffairs,Europewillloom largeonthehorizonofthenextCongress,whichmeetsinDecember.Takingadvantageofthefirstlullinmore thaneightyearsinlegislativeactivities.membersofboththeSenateand theHouseofRepresentativesareupon theirowninitiativemakingasurvey ofEuropeanconditions.Theyare travellingupanddownthecontinent, andanumberoftheso-calledProgressivemembersaremakingextensive toursinRussia.

ThepolicyoftheUnitedStates withreferencetothereA)goit:onof isks..theSovietGovernmsiltwillprobably comeupforextendeddiscussionwhen theSenatemeets.Pleaswillundoubtedlybemadefortheestablishmentof officialrelationswiththeSovietGovernment,and,inconnectionwiththe worldcourtpropo,41,therestillhea generalairingofEurope'sdifficulties.

Asifinpreparationfortheforthcomingdebate,theAmericanFederationofLabourhasitsuedanimportantmanifestocallingattentontothe disturbingtrendlabouractivitiesin theEuropeanpoliticalfield-aproblemgeneraltoEurope,althoughit centresuponRussia-andthespread ofthecommunisticidealexpressedin theSovietregimetoothercountries. Thiswarningisevokedbytherecent actionoftheInternationalFederation ofTransportWorkersinenteringinto analliancewiththeRedSovietorganisationoftransportworkerswhich ischaracterisedasa"sell-out"tocommunismbyaveryimportantbranch ofEuropeanorganisedlabour.'The developmentsinthisconference,"the Federationdeclares."andinotherconferencesofthemonth,showEuropean labourslippingtowardthersdrevolutionarystandardsinamovementihat fromthisdistancelooksverymuch likearout."

PersecutionbySoviet.

TheFederationalsocallsattention tothefactthattheSovietautocracy isasrelentlessandasbarbarousin itspersecutionofthosewhoholdnoncommunistviewsregardinglabouras ofthosewhopracticeforreligion.

TheparticularcausefortheresentmentoftheAmericanFederationof LabouragainsttheEuropeanlabour leaderswhohavechosentomakecommoncausewiththeCommunistorganisations,liesintherecentreignofterrorisminGeorgiawheretheSoviet authoritieshavestfbjectedtoindescribablebrutalitiesthosewhoseonly crimehasbeentoholdviewsconcerninglabourdifferingfromthoseprescribedbythecommunistgovernment

ofMoscow.Itquotesextensively fromtheappealfiledwiththeLeague ofNationsbytherepresentativesof thenationalistgovernmentofGeorgia.

ReignofTenorinSmallState.

Inthisappealitisstatedthat"hundredsandthousandsofpeoplearearrestedwhosesolecrimeconsistsinnot wishingeithertodeclarethemselves tobecommunistsortorecognisethe regimeofoccupation."Theteeth andhairofvictimsarepulledout. Theyarethrownintotheprisonofthe Tcheka.wheretheycannotsitdown andwheretheyaregivenneitherfood nordrink.Theyareflogged,threatenedwithdeathandfinallyshot."In short."theappealconcludes,"arrests, deportations.executions,assassinations,incemliarism,pillage-theseare theessentialcharacteristicsofthepresentsituationinGeorgieoccupiedby thetroopsofSovietRussia."

Thisreignofterrorwascondemned inaresolutionadoptedbyHamburg LabourCongress.But,astheFederationofLabourpointsout,the Britishdelegatesrefusedtovoteand remainedsilent."Inviewofthe factthatan}`alliancewithcommunismmeanssurrendertocommunism, itisdifficulttounderstandhowthe EuropeanLabourorganisationsthat havebeenflirtingwiththeSovietdictatorsexpecttoescapeassimilationby theReddictatorship."

Whatevermaybetheattitudeof theAmericanpoliticianswhoarenow making,ontheirownaccount,surveys ofRussianconditions,itisapparent thattheAmericanFederationofLabourisbeginningtolookwithappre-hensionupontheplanforco-operation withEuropeanlabourifthelatteris tomakecommonpoliticalcausewith RussianBolshevism.Ithas,therefore,soundedthissignificantwarning:"TheAmericanFederationofLabourhasatnotimebeendeceivedby thetrendofeventsinthehead-quartersoftheInternationalFederationof TradeUnionsatAmsterdam.Asituationthathasneverbeensatisfactory butthathasalwaysheldthegermsof destructive,pro-Bolsheviktendencies, hasforthetimebeing,atleast,becomeworsethanever.

"TheardencyofAmericanlabour's desiretobehelpfultotheworkersof Europehasneverabated.Itwillbe atimeforrejoicingwhenfraternalrelationscanbere-established.

"Europeanlabour,however,byone manoeuverafteranother,makesthat relationshipseemmoreandmoreremote.

"Americanlabourhashadaright toexpectthatEuropeanlabourwould atleaststandfastindefenceofthe majorprinciplesofdemocracy.

DuringhisrecentvisittotheBavariancapital,forallhisinnumerableofficialengagementsasChancellorofGermany.hefoundtime,afterhisofficial receptionbythe,municipalauthoritiesofMunich.toprovehisattachmentSohisformerandpresentcomrades,spendinganhouratthehomeof theMunichbranchoftheUnion,the "Aenania,"thoughthehourwasclose onmidnight.TheChancellorwasaccompaniedbytheBavarianMinister ofPublicWorshipandEducation.Mr Matt,andbytheMinisterforHome Affairs,Dr.Schweyer,bothofthem membersofthesameUnion,whichhas itsbranchesattheAustrianuniversities.
