rem...ears,from1479to1485,were spentindecoratingthewallsofthe Westernportionofthechapel-the wholespacenowoccupiedbythestalls -withaseriesofpaintingsintworows oneachside,representingMiraclesof theBlessedVirgin-thePatronessof theCollege,andfiguresofEvangelists. Doctor,theChurch,andVirgin SaintsThenameofbutoneofthe paintersemployedontheworkhas beenhandeddowninthecollegea, counte;itisWilliamBaker.He,at least.wasanEnglishman.Another entryintheaccountsshowsthathe hadcolleagues:whethertheywere compatriotsornotthereisnothinga: show.

"WipedOut"byCollegeBarber.

ThechangesofEdwardVI.'sreign. whichleavedeeptracesinthecollege accounts,didnotaffectthispartof thechapelfurniture.ButElizabeth', timewasnotsokind.In1560sie shillingsandeightpencewaspaidto thecollegebarberfurwipingoutthe imageryworkuponthewallsofthe church."Wipingout"meantnomore thanwhitewashingover;butunder whitewashthepicturesremainedunnoticedanddoubtlesssoonforgotten In1700thewholeinteriorofthechapel wasclothedwithastatelywainscoting intheClassicmanner.Thatworkentailedvariousinterferenceswiththe surfaceofthewalls;butnothingis saidintherecordsofthetime,and,of course.nothingwasthought,says"The Times"correspondent.oftheseoddold Popishreiics.Oblivionwastheirlot foralmostahundredandfiftyyears more.

ScrapedAway.

In1874,thepaganclassicisedinteriorofthecollegechapelwastakenin handbyexcellent,virtuous,generous

enthusiastic.disastrousmen.Provost I'...dolphin'swainscotingwastorn ,vii,andthepaintings-mutilated, indeed,butstillfairlycomplete-are revealedtoagenerationwhichhad neversuspectedtheirexistence."Most interesting!-saideverybodywhosaw them:bistalas!nobodythoughtof tellingtheclerkoftheworkswhatwas tobedoneaboutthem;andinsuch situationtheclerZoftheworksisthe personwhoreallymatters.OneafternoonMr.JohnWilder(thenameis muchtobehonouredatEton)'went intothechapelandfoundthatthe workmenhadjustnotfinishedscrapingtheupperhalfoftheupperrow paintingsoffthewalls."Noorders!"

WhatAbouttheSurvivors?

Thenbeganacontroversyastothe fateofthesurvivingpictures.Mostof thelowerrowoneachwallwascomplete,andpartsoftheupperrowhad beenspared-enoughtoallowthesubjectstobemadeoutinmustcases. Antiquariesandchampionsofthe Gothicrevival.crowdedtoseethem, andwroteaboutthem.ThePrince Consortwasmuchimpressedbythe artisticexcellenceofthework.and pleadedforsomemeansofmaking themaccessible,byhingedpanelsor thelike.ProvostHodgsoncouldnot thinkthattheywerefitsubjectsfor thecontemplationofyouthDearer tohim,too,wastheprospectofthe twouniformrowsofstallcanopies So.aftercarefuldrawingsofallthat wasleftofthepaintingshadbeen made,theywereprotected,webelieve. bycanvas,andretiredintotheobscuritywhichonlytheeyeofthespecialistpierces.

BeforetheEraofReynolds.

"Whynowallthisto-doaboutthis particularsetofwall-paintings?Are theyanybetterthanthedaubsthat oneseesinvillagechurchesallabout thecountry?"Thecorrespondentputs thesequestions,whichhehimselfanswersthat.sofarastheevidenceof copiesgoes,theyareimmenselysuperiortoanyotherworkoftheirkindremaininginEngland;theyarereally fineworksofart.Asmallportionof them.thecorrespondentrecalls,was exposedintheyear1881,whenthepresentorganscreenwasbeingputup: andwhatwasthenseenamplybore outthetestimonyofthedrawings.We areconfidentthat.ifoncetheseEton paintingsereuncovered,theirexcellencewillcomeasarevelationtothe averageperson,whoistooapttobehavethatEnglishartbeganwithSir JoshuaReynolds.-"IrishCatholic."

CAPTAINMoCULLAGHEXPOSESRUSSIANINFAMY.

"ThepersecutionoftheRussian clergy"wasthetitleofalecturedeliveredatKing'sCollege,London,recently.byCaptainFrancisMcCullagh. thewell-knownWar.Correspondent, whohasbeenpursuingjournalistic dutiesinRussiaforsomeconsiderable time,andwhowaspresentincourt throughthetrialofArchbishopCiepliak,MonsignorBudlciewiczanda numberofCatholicpriests.

ThegatheringatKing'sCollegeto hearCaptainMcCullagh'sdiscourse waspresidedoverbyLordBurnham, aadwasremarkableforitsrepresentativt:cltaracter

Captait;McCullaghstated,thatthe pretencemadeabroadthattheSoviet GovernmentwasnotpersecutingreligionwasnotmaintainedinRussia. whereitwasplainlysaidthattheSovietwasouttocrushallreligionsand notChristianityonly.Herelatedat lengththestoryofthetrialofthe CatholioecclesiasticsatMoscowand dweltuponthephraserepeatedlyused bythePublicProsecutor.Krylenko.

"ThereisnolawbuttheSovietlaw," alawbywhichallteachersofreligion incurredthedeathpenalty.

DealingwiththeRussianChurch,he mentionedthatmorethanathousand BishopsandpriestsofthatChurch hadbeenputtodeathbytheBolshevik.,duringthelastfiveyears,and probablyasmanywerenowinprison. IlementionedthenameofoneBishop-Benjamin,ofPetrograd,whowas hefeltquiteasmuchamartyrasMonsignorBudkiew(.7 BraveWomen.

But,evenhigherthanBishopBenjamin,continuedthelecturer,hewould rankabraveyoungRussianwoman,

Atthetimetheystartedit,thePatiarchwasaprisoner,BishopNikanderwasaprisoner,elevenpriestsand laymenhadjustbeencondemnedto deathinMoscowBishopBenjaminhad justbeensecretlyputtodeathinPetrograd,thewholemachineryof ChurchadministrationhadbeenstoppedbytheReds,everyecclesiastical publicationhadbeensuppressedexceptonesmallpiper,theorganofthe RedChurchParty,andallChurch schoolsantiseminarieshadbeenclosed.YettheBolshevikscalmlyannounced"thereisnopersecutionof theChurch."liewouldliketoknow whattheBolsheviksideaofpersecutionreallywas.

AppealfortheImprisoned. CaptainMcCullaghwentontorefer totheappealmadebyGreatBritain onbehalfofMonsignorBudkiewicz, which,hesaid,hadrevivedhopein theheartsofallRussians,exceptthe Bolsheviks,andexpressedhisadmirationfortheconductofMr.Hodgson, theBritishagentinMoscow.Finally,

Mme.Brusilova.thewifeofGeneral Brusilofi'sson.Thisladyputherself attheheadofanumberofunarmed Christianswhoassembledoutsidea PetrogradChurch,inordertoprevent theRedscarryingofftheEucharistic vessels.andshehadbeenheardtocry out:"TheInfidelshavecometodespoilthebodyofChrist."Shedid notdenyhavingusedthesewords; shegloriedinthem,and,whenshewas condemnedtodeath,shesaid:"You cantakeawaymylife,butyoucannot takeawaythepeacethatisinmy heart,forIreceivedtheSacrament thismorning."

WhenthisRedHorrorhadpassed, asNeroandDiocletianhadpassed, Russiashouldraiseagreatmonument toherwomen,fortheyhadbeen splendid.Duringtheanti-Christian processionsinthestreetsofMoscow lastChristmas,theonlyspectatorsto protestwerepoorRussianwomen.

ABolshevikGang.

Theresultofthepersecutionofthe PatriarchTikhonandofthemachinationsoftheReds.wasthatthewhole machineryciftheOrthodoxChurch wasnowinthehandsofaBolshevik gang.Itwaslikeacaseofdemoniacalpossession,likethebodyofadear friendbecomingpossessedbyadevil, withtheresultthatallone'seffortsto injurethedemononlyresultininjury toourfriend,andallone'seffortsto benefitourfriendonlybenefitedthe demon.

February,1873.Hewasordainedby Dr.Walsh,ArchbishopofDublin,on the19th.June.1898.Formanyyears heworkedintheArchdioceseofMelbourne,until,in1912,whenonavisit tohismotherinIreland,hereceived wordofhisappointmenttotheSeeof Rockhampton.Hewasconsecrated byArchbishopMannixinMaynooth College,hisAlmaMater,onthe26th. January,1913,andthefollowingMay theenthronementtookplaceatSt. Joseph'sCathedral.Rockhampton.Dr. Shielhasadministeredtheaffairsof hisdiocesewithgreatability,andhis zealinpromotingtheFaithisshown inthenumberofnewparishesand churcheswhichhavebeencreated underhisactiveadministration.Ad rnultosannos.

Onthe19th.ult.,RightRev.MonsignorTobin,V.G.Glenlimes,celebratedthe25th.anniversaryofhisordinationtothepriesthood.Itwasa dayofgreatrejoicingfortheCatholic communityofthatsectionoftheArmidaleDiocese.!borninBallylooby, Tipperary,Ireland,48yearsagoitis acoincidencethathewasbaptisedby FatherD.O'Connor,brotherofthe presentBishopofArmidale.Hebeganhisschoolcareerinhisnative town,andattheearlyyageof12proceededtotheseminaryofMt.Melleray.Whiletherehewasafellowstudentofmanypriestswhoareat presentintheArmidalediocese.He nextproceededtoWaterfordCollege, foracourseofphilosophyandtheology,atthecloseofwhichhewas ordainedpriest,andcametoArmidale, wherehewasattachedtothecathedralstaff.AtthistimeDeanO'ConnorwastheAdministrator,andonhis consecrationfiveyearslater,Father TobinwasappointedAdministrator. Threeyearslaterhereceivedthetitle ofDean'andafter15years'strenuousworkintheArmidaleparish,he re-visitedhis.nativeland.Onhisreturnin1914.DeanTobinwasappointedtotheparishofInverell, whencehewasremovedsixmonths' latertoGlenInnes,insuccessionto thelateMonsignorCorcoran,V.G. Shortlyafterwardshewasappointed Vicar-General.Furtherhonourswere

conferredonhimin1920,whenPope BenedictXV.bestowedonhimthe titleofDomesticPrelate.Uponhis arrivalatGlenInnes,MonsignorTobin immediatelysettoworktowipeout thedebtwhichremainedonSt,Patrick'sChurch,andthisheaccomplishedinaveryshorttime.Hisnext workwastotakestepsfortheerection ofanewconvent,andthemagnificent buildingwhichhehaderected-oneof themostup-to-dateintheState-will remainamonumenttohiszealandorganisation.Amongstthemanytributespaidbybrotherclergytothe Monsignorwasamovingoneby FatherJohnO'Connor.Theyoung priestisaBenLamondboy,whowas baptisedbytheMonsignor.Atan overflowingmeetingintheMajestic PictureTheatre.theparishionerspresentedtheMonsignorwithawell-filled walletofnotes.Manyothergifts weremadetohim.

queenMaryduringthevisitspent sometimeintheChurchofS.Clemente,nowheldbytheIrishDominicans.whereshewasmuchimpressed bythevenerablesite,withitstine stratification. ItboastsanancientRomanwall whichgoesback,somesay,tothe sixthcenturybeforeChrist;ahouse ofthefirstcenturyoftheEmpire, whichisthatofClement,Popeand Martyr;atempletothepaganSun Gad,Mithras,showingthattheChristiansitewasoncemoretakenback bythepagans;abovethis,again.the splendidChristianBasilicaofthetime ofConstantine,nowtotallyunderground.and,finally,thepresentBasilica.datingbacktothetwelfthcentury.

S.Clemente,whichbecamethepropertyoftheIrishDominicansin1687, wasalwaysspeciallydeartotheexiled HouseofStuart.Inmorerecent timestheChurchofMithraswasvisitedbyKingEdwardVII.whenPrince ofWales.

TheQueenwasspeciallyinterested inthegreatmosaicoftheApse:nthe oldScholaCantorum,andinthe ChapeloftheCrucifixion.withitscelebratedfrescoes.InhonourofherMatesty'svisittheAtrium,whichis uniqueinRome,andthe,frontentranceofthechurchwerethrownopen. suitablydecoratedwithredhangings, whiletheUnionJackfloatedgaily fromthecampanile.

AttheentranceherMajestywas awaitedbytheFatherPriorofthe IrishDominicans,byFatherNolan. theex-Priorandhistorianofthe church,wellknownasanarchaeologist;andbyMrs.ArthurStrong,the AssistantDirectoroftheBritish SchoolatRome.Dr.Ashby,theDirectoroftheBritishSchool.wasalso present,andamongtheItaliannotabilitieswerethePrefectofRomeand SenatorLanciani.

Thepopulationoftheneighbourhood ofS.Clemente,whichisoneofthe poorestinRome,hadassembledin crowdsfromtheearlymorning,and cheeredtheRoyalpartyenthusiasticallybothonarrivingandleaving.Mrs. Stronghadthehonourofpresenting totheQueenherbookonRoman sculpture.andtheQueengratefully acceptedatthesametimetwobooks byFatherNolanonS.'Clementeand itsIrishDominicans.TheQueenalsa visitedtheChurchofSt.PaulOutside t.1*Walls,theBathsofDiocletian.and theBorgheseMuseum.

TheKingandQueenhadbeenanxiouslywaitingtheopportunityofseeingtheCatacombs,saysthe"Evening News"correspondent.AftergreetingsfromthePontificalt;ommiss:conher Majestywasanxioustodessendimmediately,butProf.Marucchisaid:"We cannottaketheresponsibilityforyou inthatlovelylightdressofyours.You wouldcatchachillbelow.""Never mind."saidtheQueen,"I'lltakethe risk. Hehadonlyheardofher.YetthevividnessofthepictureofhisfriendL'Estrange.theportrait-painterhadsketchedinwords,hadgivenhimavision ofher.Hecouldimagineherfrank dignity,herenchantingsmile."Itwas iikethesunburstingthroughclouds," hehadsaid,"meltingtheirgreysinto tenderestgold."

Thepainterwasnotinlovewithher. Heidolisedanotherwoman,ofadifferenttype;sothiswaspurelyfrom theartist'sstandpoint.Yetitcaught andheldfirmholdofFrankWarfield's imagination."IfIevershouldmeet hers.'shouldknowherataglance.It isatitretype.buttremendouslyreal."

Stillthechancenevercame,andhe wasonthevergeofaproposaltolittle lily-facedAliciaIde.Yetbeingconscientious,andnotquitesureofhimself,hedarednotriskit.

TheWinterpassed,thentheSpring quietly,forbothfriends.EarlySummerhadcome.andFrankWarfield hadgonetoarestfulsea-shoreplace highlypraisedbyhisfriend.Hewas stilllingeringthere,wellpleasedwith thegreatrock-boundcoastwhichhad charmedtheartist.Butonedaya greyfogfellovertheworld,settling downintoasullendriftofrain;and hebethoughthimselfofthesmallpubliclibraryofthetown,wherehehoped toobtainsomethingreadable.But thenovelsonitscatalogueseemedun-attractive-hewassomethingofa criticandheaskedthelibrarianif shehadnotaproseworkbyMaeterlinck.of"Bluebird"fame.Hehad forgottenitstitle,andthegood-naturedcustodianofbookswasvainlytryingtohelphimout. .9sweet.well-bredvoiceintervened atthispoint.
