Doctor,theChurch,andVirgin SaintsThenameofbutoneofthe paintersemployedontheworkhas beenhandeddowninthecollegea, counte;itisWilliamBaker.He,at least.wasanEnglishman.Another entryintheaccountsshowsthathe hadcolleagues:whethertheywere compatriotsornotthereisnothinga: show.

"WipedOut"byCollegeBarber.

ThechangesofEdwardVI.'sreign. whichleavedeeptracesinthecollege accounts,didnotaffectthispartof thechapelfurniture.ButElizabeth', timewasnotsokind.In1560sie shillingsandeightpencewaspaidto thecollegebarberfurwipingoutthe imageryworkuponthewallsofthe church."Wipingout"meantnomore thanwhitewashingover;butunder whitewashthepicturesremainedunnoticedanddoubtlesssoonforgotten In1700thewholeinteriorofthechapel wasclothedwithastatelywainscoting intheClassicmanner.Thatworkentailedvariousinterferenceswiththe surfaceofthewalls;butnothingis saidintherecordsofthetime,and,of course.nothingwasthought,says"The Times"correspondent.oftheseoddold Popishreiics.Oblivionwastheirlot foralmostahundredandfiftyyears more.

Onthe19th.ult.,RightRev.MonsignorTobin,V.G.Glenlimes,celebratedthe25th.anniversaryofhisordinationtothepriesthood.Itwasa dayofgreatrejoicingfortheCatholic communityofthatsectionoftheArmidaleDiocese.!borninBallylooby, Tipperary,Ireland,48yearsagoitis acoincidencethathewasbaptisedby FatherD.O'Connor,brotherofthe presentBishopofArmidale.Hebeganhisschoolcareerinhisnative town,andattheearlyyageof12proceededtotheseminaryofMt.Melleray.Whiletherehewasafellowstudentofmanypriestswhoareat presentintheArmidalediocese.He nextproceededtoWaterfordCollege, foracourseofphilosophyandtheology,atthecloseofwhichhewas ordainedpriest,andcametoArmidale, wherehewasattachedtothecathedralstaff.AtthistimeDeanO'ConnorwastheAdministrator,andonhis consecrationfiveyearslater,Father TobinwasappointedAdministrator. Threeyearslaterhereceivedthetitle ofDean'andafter15years'strenuousworkintheArmidaleparish,he re-visitedhis.nativeland.Onhisreturnin1914.DeanTobinwasappointedtotheparishofInverell, whencehewasremovedsixmonths' latertoGlenInnes,insuccessionto thelateMonsignorCorcoran,V.G. Shortlyafterwardshewasappointed Vicar-General.Furtherhonourswere

conferredonhimin1920,whenPope BenedictXV.bestowedonhimthe titleofDomesticPrelate.Uponhis arrivalatGlenInnes,MonsignorTobin immediatelysettoworktowipeout thedebtwhichremainedonSt,Patrick'sChurch,andthisheaccomplishedinaveryshorttime.Hisnext workwastotakestepsfortheerection ofanewconvent,andthemagnificent buildingwhichhehaderected-oneof themostup-to-dateintheState-will remainamonumenttohiszealandorganisation.Amongstthemanytributespaidbybrotherclergytothe Monsignorwasamovingoneby FatherJohnO'Connor.Theyoung priestisaBenLamondboy,whowas baptisedbytheMonsignor.Atan overflowingmeetingintheMajestic PictureTheatre.theparishionerspresentedtheMonsignorwithawell-filled walletofnotes.Manyothergifts weremadetohim.

ItboastsanancientRomanwall whichgoesback,somesay,tothe sixthcenturybeforeChrist;ahouse ofthefirstcenturyoftheEmpire, whichisthatofClement,Popeand Martyr;atempletothepaganSun Gad,Mithras,showingthattheChristiansitewasoncemoretakenback bythepagans;abovethis,again.the splendidChristianBasilicaofthetime ofConstantine,nowtotallyunderground.and,finally,thepresentBasilica.datingbacktothetwelfthcentury.

S.Clemente,whichbecamethepropertyoftheIrishDominicansin1687, wasalwaysspeciallydeartotheexiled HouseofStuart.Inmorerecent timestheChurchofMithraswasvisitedbyKingEdwardVII.whenPrince ofWales.

TheQueenwasspeciallyinterested inthegreatmosaicoftheApse:nthe oldScholaCantorum,andinthe ChapeloftheCrucifixion.withitscelebratedfrescoes.InhonourofherMatesty'svisittheAtrium,whichis uniqueinRome,andthe,frontentranceofthechurchwerethrownopen. suitablydecoratedwithredhangings, whiletheUnionJackfloatedgaily fromthecampanile.

AttheentranceherMajestywas awaitedbytheFatherPriorofthe IrishDominicans,byFatherNolan. theex-Priorandhistorianofthe church,wellknownasanarchaeologist;andbyMrs.ArthurStrong,the AssistantDirectoroftheBritish SchoolatRome.Dr.Ashby,theDirectoroftheBritishSchool.wasalso present,andamongtheItaliannotabilitieswerethePrefectofRomeand SenatorLanciani.

Thepopulationoftheneighbourhood ofS.Clemente,whichisoneofthe poorestinRome,hadassembledin crowdsfromtheearlymorning,and cheeredtheRoyalpartyenthusiasticallybothonarrivingandleaving.Mrs. Stronghadthehonourofpresenting totheQueenherbookonRoman sculpture.andtheQueengratefully acceptedatthesametimetwobooks byFatherNolanonS.'Clementeand itsIrishDominicans.TheQueenalsa visitedtheChurchofSt.PaulOutside t.1*Walls,theBathsofDiocletian.and theBorgheseMuseum.

TheKingandQueenhadbeenanxiouslywaitingtheopportunityofseeingtheCatacombs,saysthe"Evening News"correspondent.AftergreetingsfromthePontificalt;ommiss:conher Majestywasanxioustodessendimmediately,butProf.Marucchisaid:"We cannottaketheresponsibilityforyou inthatlovelylightdressofyours.You wouldcatchachillbelow.""Never mind."saidtheQueen,"I'lltakethe risk. Iamsoanxioustoseethem."

Thepainterwasnotinlovewithher. Heidolisedanotherwoman,ofadifferenttype;sothiswaspurelyfrom theartist'sstandpoint.Yetitcaught andheldfirmholdofFrankWarfield's imagination."IfIevershouldmeet hers.'shouldknowherataglance.It isatitretype.buttremendouslyreal."
