Moniedpeoplecouldanddidsendtheir childrenabroadforinstruction.butthe greatmajorityofIrishchildrenremainedathome,eitheruneducatedor receivingwhateducationtheclergy. themselvesproscribedandoutlawCd, mightgivethem. TheinfamousCharterschools,foundedtomeetthewishesoftheProtestant ArchbishopBoulterin1730wereofa proselytisingcharacter;thechildrenof Catholicparentsweretakenbyforce fromtheirparentsandplacedinthese schoolsatimmensedistancesfrointheir homes.Inthemtheyweretreated abominably.Itwasonlythroughthe effortsandtheexposureoftheiratrocitiesbytheworld-renownedphilanthropist.JohnHoward,thattheiniquitousCharterschoolscametoan end.

Towardstheendoftheeighteenth century,whentherevolutionaryspirit wasabroadsomeconcessionswere madetoIrishCatholics;themostimportanteducationalworkofthattime wasthefoundingofMaynoothCollege, whichwasurgentlyrequiredowingto thewithdrawalofIrishstudentsfrom ecclesiasticalseminariesabroad:the FrenchRevolutionhaddestroyedreligiousfoundations. TheChristianBrothershadcommencedtheirnobletaskyearsbefore theNationalSchoolsystemwasputin force.Thesystemhadopponents amongCatholics,butfinallyitwasaccepted,thoughthehooksselectedfor useinalltheschoolswerethechoice oftheProtestantArchbishopWhately. AtlasttheschoolsweremadetolerableforCatholics,andthepriests. throughSundayschoolclassesand externteachers,combatedtheundenominationalismoftheGovernment schools.In1900-that'snotsolong ago-secondaryschoolsandcolleges wereintroduced.
