Mr.Chestertonhasbegunaseriesof articlesinBlackfriarsforOctoberon "WhereAllRoadsLead."inwhichhe writeshisfirstwordasaCatholicto CatholicsHisfirstarticleonthe Youthof remarktheChurchopenswiththe thatwhilesomeyearsagoa convertwasexpectedtogivehisreasonsforjoiningtheCatholicChurch,he isto-dayreallyexpectedtogivehis reasonsfornotjoiningit.Mr.Chestertonfindsinthousandsofmindsthe subconsciousrecognitionofwhathe calls"thechallengeoftheChurch."By thishemeans"thattheworldhasrecentlybecomeawareofthatchallenge inacuriousandalmostcreepyfashion.""TheworldhasbecomeconsciousthatitisnotCatholic.Only latelyitwouldhavebeenaboutaslikelytobroodonthefactthatitisnot Confucian.AndallthearrayofreasonsfornotjoiningtheChurchof Romemarkedbutthebeginningofthe ultimatereasonforjoiningit.That soreofpresenceandpressureofthe ChurchIbelievetobeuniversaland ubiquitousto-day,notonlyamongAnglicans.butamongAgnostics.IrepeatthatIdonotmeanthatthey havenorealobjective;onthecontrary Imeanthattheyhavebegunreally toobject;theyhavebeguntokickand struggle."

PriestArbitratesinLabourDispute. Afteroutliningthedoctrineofthe Churchinregardtonecessaryrelations betweencapitalandlabourhepointed outthatthereisanindispensibleprincipleofauthorityinanyconcernin ordertomaintainharmonyandorder. AforeignexchangestatesitisreportedfromMoscowthatArchbishop Benjamin,MetropolitanofPetrograd. andtheotherscondemnedforinterferingwiththeseizureofchurchtreasures,wereexecutedbyafiringsquad inPetrogradonAugust10last.Another reportstatesthatM.Keinofeiff,one oftheleadersoftheSocialRevolutionists,whowastriedrecentlyin Moscow,hangedhimselfinprison.It isalsodeclaredthattheBolsheviki havearrestednumerousstudents throughoutRussia. £8,000SpenttoDefendRights. TheScotishRitaMasons andotherorganisationswhichsponsoredthebillareknowntobepreparingafighttofoistsimilaramendments onotherStates.Thefightinthe StateofOregoncosttheCatholicsapproximately£8,000.TheKuKlux KlanandOrangesocietiesstrongly supportedthebill.

FineCatholicPrince, TheCatholiccommunityofIndia hassustainedagreatlossintheper sonofthenativeprinceSilvesterNorbertShivanathKikh,brotherofthe RajahofTajpur,whowasadevout memberoftheChurch,andaKnight oftheGrandCrossoftheOrderof SaintGregorytheGreat.ThePrince firstbecameinterestedinCatholicism whileastudentatOxfordandentered theChurchafterhisreturntoIndia.

HewasadailyComunicant.andspent severalhourseachdayinmeditation inthelocalchurch,orinhisprivate chapel.HissaintlylifewasanQnspirationtoallwhoknewhim.Hehad averygreatdevotiontowardsthe BlessedVirgin,towhomheattributed thegraceofhisconversion.

VenerableIndianMissionary. TheRev.JosephM.Cataldo,S.J., Indianmissionaryforoverhalfacentury,-celebratedhis60th.anniversary inthepriesthoodlastmonth.In December,FatherCataldowillkeep his70th.anniversaryasamemberof theSocietyofJesus.Masterofnearly tenIndianlanguages,thisdevoted priesthasdistinguishedhimselfinthe evangelisationoftheRedMen,andis atpresentinchargeoftheNezPerce tribeatSt.Joseph'sMission.Slickpoo. Idaho,wheretheirconventandschool weredestroyedbyfirein1916. TheBritishGovernmentandthe(Jenaculum. Oneofthepressingmatterswhich boththeItalianGovernmentandthe Catholicauthoritiesareanxioustohave settledwiththeBritishGovernment,is thequestionoftheownershipofCenaculum,orUpperChamber,inwhich ChristcelebratedtheLastSupperwith theApostles.Itisthisquestionwhich theItalianForeignMinister,Signor Schanzer,wasexpectedtoadjustduringhisvisittoLondon.TheItalian claims-whichdonotappeartobedisputedbytheBritishauthorities-are basedontwofacts.Thefirstofthese factsisthatCountRobertofNaples, whocausedhimselftobemadeKingof Jerusaleminthethirteenthcentury, gaveoverthepossessionoftheCenacultuninJerusalemtotheItalianFranciscans,whohaveeversincepossessed certainrights.Finally.theSultanof Turkeymadeovercertainrightsinthe CenaculumtotheKingofItaly.asthe descendantofCountRobert,inadocumentbeforetheTreatyofSevreswas signedin1920.Sofarthecaseis clear.Butitalsohappensthatthe lowerpartofthebuildinginwhichthe Cenaculumissituatedisastructure knowntraditionallyastheTombof David,andtothisboththeJewsand theMoslemslayclaimasbeingoneof theirHolyPlaces.TheBritishview isthatthequestionoftheownership ofthiscomplexHolyPlaceshouldbe decidedbytheEcclesiasticalCommission,whichtheLeagueofNationshas orderedtobesetup.Butboththe ItalianGovernmentandtheCatholic authoritiesmaintain,andwithjustice, thatthequestionofownershipand controlarenotindispute,andthat thequestionisnotoneinwhichthe LeagueofNationsCommissioniscalledupontointervene.TheCenaculum alone,ortheTombofDavidalone, couldbeeasilysettled;butasitisthe twoHolyPlacesbeingsituatedinthe onebuildinghasbroughttolightone ofthemostcomplicatedpositionsof moderntimes.-T.N.S."
