Ven.ArchdeaconFallon,P.P., preachingatlastMassinCastlebaron arecntSunday,saidhecouldnotunderstandthementalityofthoseyoung peoplewhowerenotpreparedtoaccepttheverdictofthemajorityof theircountrymen,andseemedtobe determinedtothrusttheiropinions downthethroatsofthepeopleatthe pointoftherevolver. TheyinCastelbarhadaveryfair sampleofwhatrevolvergovernment meantwithinthepastfewmonths. Whenthepeoplewishedtoholda meetingtodiscussthepoliticalsituationamonthortwoago,theywere routedatthepointoftherevolver. Whentheywishedtoconducttheir businessintheordinarywaytheywere toldtheyshouldcloseuptheirshcips whenevertherevolverbulliesgave themorders.Privateresidenceswere seizedandtheownersdrivenoutona fewhours'noticeThegreatquestionwashowlong weretheygoingtosubmittothisrevolvergovernment,continuedthe Archdeacon,orhowtheyweregoing toshakeitoff. Agoodandexemplaryoldlady,in thepersonofMrs.Lanigan,senr.,of Mogumber,passedawaytohereternal rewardonAugust31,wellprepared andfortifiedbytheritesandSacramentsofHolyChurch,attheripeold ageof87years.InthewordsofHoly Writ,wemaytrulysayinthecase ofthedeceasedMrs.Lanigan,"BlessedarethedeadwhodieintheLord fortheyrestfromtheirlaboursand theirworksfollowthem."Everyday ofMrs.Lanigan'slifewaspassedasa preparationfordeath;andnowshe issecureandhappyinthebosomof theInfiniteforevermore.Inyouth andoldageMrs.Laniganwasamost estimable,amiable,charitablesoulnature'sgentlewoman,sweetenedand refinedbyhersaintlyreligousspirit. AtherdeathMrs.Laniganwasone 01theoldestresidentsoftheState.As MissFitzpatrickshelandedinW.A. horntheshipEscortin1860,andproceededimmediatelytoCanterbury,the homeofMr.Butler,andherethe faithfulIrishgirlremaineduntilher marriagewithMr.Lanigan,Mr.Butler'snephew.Weentertainnodoubts whateverthatthismarriagewasmade inheaven;forthehonest, upright. Irishboywasjusttheonetomakea fittingpartnerforsuchanidealgirl. Themarriagewasindeedahappyone andprolificofunlimitedgood. TheChurchcouldnotcontainhalfthe people'thatattended.Thefuneral processionfromtheCathedraltothe cemeterywasverystriking.First afterthehearse,allthenearrelations, thentheCollegeboyswiththeMarist Brothersattheirhead,thepeopleattending.thegirlsofSt.Gertrude's soneatandorderly,theorphangirls withtheBenedictineSisters,andthe orphanboyswithBrotherLuisin charge.TheRev.FatherCastanares officiatedatthegrave,andVeryRev. FatherPriorReosgaveatellingaddressonthevirtuesandexampleof thedeceased,windingupbyhoping alltheotherMrs.Laniganswouldbe asgoodastheonetheyhadnowconsignedtothegrave.-R.I.P. Thesameceremonieshadbeengone throughonlyfourdayspreviously overthefuneralofanothergoodold resident,JackLongman.Jackwas alsoahighlyrespectedmemberofthe community,evermeek,obligingand kind.Hediedmostunexpectedly afteranoperationinthepublichospitalinPerth.Thegreatestsympathygoesouttothebereavedand heart-brokenMrs.Longmanandallhis sonsanddaughters.Thefuneralwas oneofthelargestseeninNewNorcia. -R.I.P.
Anincidentofdisinterestedcharity inconnectionwithMr.Longman'soperationinthehospitalisworthrecording.BeforetheoperationMrs.W.K. Davidson,formerlyofGlentromie,now ofPerth-aChurchofEnglandladytookhermotorandbroughtapriest toattendthesickman.Againafter theoperationshemotoredforthe priesttopreparethepatientfordeath. Weourselvesdon'twonderatthis;we havehadsomanyevidencesofMrs. Davidson'scharityinthepast.Thisis trulyChristiancharity,andGodwill surelyrewardMrs.
oureddecorationsartisticallyinterspersedwithribbonsofredandblack (theCollegecolours),togetherwith thegorgeousarrayofconfetti,streamers,andspotlights,transformedthe interiorintoaspectaclemostexquisiteandpleasing.Agloriouschampionshippennant,hangingproudlyin itsplaceofprominence,servedtoinformthosepresentwhowerenotassociatedwiththefootballworld,that theChristianBrothers'studentswere theproudpossessorsofthechampionshipandcupfortheyearjustconcluded,whichisonemorelaurelto theirachievements.Thepopularityof thisannualentertainmentwasevidencedbytheattendanceofsome450 persons,whoheartilyjoinedinthe proceedingsandmanifestedtheirappreciationbythesociable,self-satisfied
spiritwhichprevailed.Sheridan'sOrchestrawasheardatitsbestindispensingthedancemusic.MissMolly Scottalsoacquittedherselfwellin playingthe"extras."Peopleboth youngandoldjoinedinthemerriment oftippingthelightfantastic.The dancinggenerallywasofahighstandard,moreparticularlythequalitydisplayedbytheyoungermembers,the creditbeingundoubtedlyduetotheir goodfortuneinpossessingoneso qualifiedandskilledintheartasis theirdancingmistress,MissMercia Scott,underwhosesupervisionthe dancingclassattheCollegeisconducted.Thisgenialyoungladyis alsotobecongratulatedonherabilitiesassecretaryandorganiserofthe ladies'committee,towhoseuntiring effortsmuchofthesuccessisattributed,andtowhomthestudentsmust betrulygrateful. Mr.Bannanofficiatedinanefficientmannertherole allotedtohimasmasterofceremonies. Themostimportanteventofthe wholeproceedingswasthepresenceof hisGracetheArchbishop.accompanied byVeryRev.FatherMoss.Those presentthoroughlyappreciatedthis actofkindness,andfeltthemselves highlyhonoured.Amongtheguests mostnoticeablewereMadameD'Al varezandherpartner,whoappeared toenjoythedancesverymuch.The committee.worthyofrecognitionfor muchgoodwork,wascomposedof
