Initsmemoriesof"FiftyYearsAgo," theSydney"Freeman'sJournal"prints areferencetothehome-comingtohis dioceseofthelateBishopQuin,first BishopofQueenslandHisLordship ontheoccasionofahistoricvisitto Romewaspresentwhentheassaulton thecitywasmadebytheItalian troops.andwithhisusualearnestness hehastenedtothepointofattackon theI'ortiaPia,tocomfortthePapal IrishZouavesbyhispresence.The Zouavessubsequentlyrelatedthatthe Bishopdisplayedthegreatestcourage ontheoccasion.notonlyexercisinghis sacredministry,butalsovisitingthe menandbringingthemrefreshment tinderfire.Nooneacquaintedwith Brisbaneto-daywouldrecogniseinit theBrisbanewhenDr.Quinnarrived there.Mostofthecitywasthena bash,andQueen-streetwas,inseveral places,scarcelypassable.TheBishop usedtotellthatoneofthefirstthings henoticedonthedayofhisarrival wasabullockteamstuckinQueenstreet.Thethreeprincipalhousesin 'thetownwereDr.Hobbs'(usedasa GovernmentHouse).Dr.Fullerton's (nowAllHallows'Convent),and "Dara,"nowArchbishopDuhig'sresidence,whichatfirstwasrented,not beingpurchaseduntilJanuary.1864 Manyinterestingstorieshavebeen toldofthehardshipsenduredbythe sealousprelateduringhisvisitationof thevastspacesinhisdiocese.itwas notanunusualtripforhisLordshipto roverover1.000milesonhorseback. AtAshfieldrecently-.VeryRcv.Dr. O'Reilly,C.M.(RectorofSt.John's College),openedaFloralFeteinaid oftheConventdebt.Catholicityin theparishhadprogressed,hesaid(re ferringtothetimewhenheresidedat thepresbytery),asquicklyasthedistricthad.ThentheConventschool wastheparishchurch,andoneMass onSundaywasenoughfortheCatholicpopulationofAshfield.Nowthey hadabeautifulchurch,presbytery, Brothers'scho61,andotherCatholic buildings.Referringtotheslanders oftheChurch'sopponents,Dr.O'Reillysaid:"Ourschoolsexcitetheirenvy andhopelessjealousy;butthepublic schoolsareina-hopelesscondition,for theyarenotabletohousetheirown flock.TheGovernmentcan'teven supplyitsownneeds-itisjustbeatingthedrumofsectarianism.Itwould bemuchbetterforthesepeopletoput theirownhouseinorder,andifthey didthattherewouldnotbetimeto meddlewithCatholicadvancement. Theschoolscamefirst,evenbeforethe Church;andinthatrespectFather Sherinandhispeoplehaddunewell inthegreattestofeducation.His Gracegavepracticaltestofthevalue oftheCathoheschoolsbyquoting statisticsfromotlic;a1sourcesinrespecttoschoolattendance.The Stateschools,hesaid,haverarelyrisen above81percentattendanceofthose ontheroll-whiletheCatholicschools wereneverbelowS2percent.Inthe year1917theStateschoolswentto85 percent.,causedbytheintroduction oftheTruancyAct,asexplainedina footnoteinthebookfromwhichhe, quoted,butthefigureshaddeclined Thatwasnotamatterofeleasureto anyone,butthefactremainedthat yearbyyearfrom1915to1919theattendanceattheprivateschoolswhich werealmostCatholic,wasnotbelow82 percent.,aridin191982.3percent.It wassointhebursariesandattheUniversities,allofwhichmadeforgood citizenship.Thatfoundationmeant theknowledgeofGodtheCreatorand HisCommandments.Temptationmust beresistedtoantagoniseindividual againstindividualandclassagainst class,ornationagainstnation.In placethereshouldbeaspiritofrecoil, ciliationandgoodcitizenship.Such wastheCatholicprincipletomakesac rificesforthecommongoodofall.
