sangsweetlyanumberofbeautiful hymns,addingconsiderablytothedevotionburningwithintheIrishhearts ofthepeopleassembledbelow.After theCommunionandtotheaccompanimentofbuglecalls,drumbeatsand martialIrishmusicplayedbythe variousbandsattheheadoftheir units,formingintoprocessionalline aroundVictoriaSquare,whichso uniquelyenclosestheCathedral,the celebrantpreachedtheoccasionalsermon. PatricktheSpiritualFatherofthe FromthepulpitFatherMcMahon deliveredatellii.1;panegyriconthe greatSaint,thethemeofwhichwas insistentthatPatrickwasamanof prayer."Prayer,"thepreachersaid, "wastheprincipalcharacteristicinthe Saint'slife."Continuing,FatherMcMahongaveabriefhistoryoftheescapadesoftheSaint,who"asayouth herdedswineinthewind-sweptfields oftheNorthofIreland,whoseheart yearnedforhishomeandcountry.Su consumedwashebytheburningfervourofprayerthatinhislettershe teausheprayedahundredtimesby dayandahundredtimesbynight.As heawakenedduringthenightheruse andprayed.Escapingfrombondage onapirateboat,heeverencountered difficulties.Asayouthfulrefugee, Patrickalwaysfoundsolaceinprayer. Athomehepraysashegoesthrough hiscolleagiatecourse.Hewasknown astheprayerfulstudent.OrdainedpriestandconsecratedBishopheconstantlyprays.Itwasduringhis prayersthatlIeheardthevoiceofthe peopleofthatlandhehadlearnedto loveasaslavecallingonhimtoreturnandwalkamongstthemagain. Atlength,armedwithRome'sCommissiontogobacktoIreland,hemounts thehillofTaraandtherepraysfor hispeople-thespiritthatmarkshis wholemisionarycareer.Attheeveningofhislife,hisworkaccomplished, andwiththeweightofyearspressing hen.down,heascendsthatmountin MayoknownsinceasCroaghPatrick, andfromitssummitheintendsto blessthefourprovincesofEire.There heprayed,andhowconstantwashis perseveranceisshownbythestoryof hisretreatonCruaghPatrick.Itis toldthathisrequestonthatoccasion, thatIrelandshouldneverlosethe Faithhebroughtit,wasnotimmediatelygranted.TheSaintpersisted inhisprayer,accompaniedbytheringingofabell,untilitwasmadekaown tohimthathisfaithandperseveringprayerhadtrainedhisrequest. Prayerwasoneofthebigthingsin Patrick'slife.Itwasthemusicof hisundyingfaithinChristcrucified. The"bitofgreen"wasmostfavoured, and."Patrick'sCrosses"and"Harps" wereasplentifulasthesmilingfaces thatmetonewhereverhewentthrough thecity.Therewascertainlynolack offriendshipandgood
advertisedstartingtime.The battalionsoftheschoolswereseeminglystrongerandmerebeautifulthaninpreviousyears.TheywereanadmirablebodyofyoungCatholicAustralians,andtheirappearancewasarobust,wholesomeandexcellenttribute totheteachingOrdersoftheChurch workinginthecityanditssuburbs. Itwasamostencouragingandpleasing eighttowatchouryoungCatholiccitizens-to-be,alert,smilingandconfident, steppingouttothenationalmusicof thebands-afinerbodyofyoungsters couldnotbefoundanywhereinAustraliathanouryoungfolkoftheWest. andnoonewilldeny.afterthedisplay onthe17th,thatourCatholicschools boldagoodproportionoftheWest's youthandbeauty.Over2.000of themwereintheprocession,andfully 4,000werepresentontheClaremont ShowGrounds.
