when theBishopsofthediocesemetandrecommendedthecreationofanewBishopric,therewasonlyonewhowas prominentbeforethepeople,andwho wasconsideredthemostsuitableto takechargeofthenewdiocese,and thatwastheirlateDr.Kelly.And hewasappointedthefirstBishopof Geraldton.HewasthesecondAustralianwhohadbeenconsecrateda Bishop.Subsequenttohisappointment,theareaofthediocesewasaddedto,takingintheKimberleydistrict. andembracingalargenumberofabo: ignesandafewwhitepeople.His Lordshipsettoworktoevangelisethe blackpopulation.Heintroducedthe PallatineFathersfromRome,who tookt4eplaceoftheTrappists,and:t was-wellknownhowexcellentlythey carriedouttheirundertaking.Then theself-sacrificingSistersofSt.John ofGoijo'nedinthegoodworkand laboredintteinterestsofthenatvss atBeagleBay.Manyofthosepresentknewhowpoorthediocesawas whenBishopKellytooktheresponsibilityofitsadministration.There wereonlyafewpriests,andavast extentofterritorytobeserved,an areaofnolessthan1,300,000square miles.WhentheBishopcame,there wasonlyonecommunityofNuns,with 14Sisters,andonlytwoorthree schools,andthesamenumberofchurches.Asaresultofhis23years'administration.whatdidtheyfind?They foundthattherewerenow11priests, andsixcommunitiesofNuns.,Inthe PresentationOrdertherewere40Sistersandpostulants,andthesamenumberintheDominicans.Therewere A now13districtsinthediocese,noless than15primaryschoolsandfive boardingschools,and28churcheschurchesnotunworthyofthename Someofthemessagesofcondolence fromtheNorth-Westwereworthquottcginthisconnection.Theytold wtheBishop,byhorseback,by sslky,bymotorcycle.andlaterby motorcar,hadtravelledthroughthat countrynotconsideringfatigueor trouble.OneofhisLordship'slast greatactswasthebuildingofthe Cathedral,ofwhichhewasproud.and inwhichtheywerecelebratingthe Month'sMind.Thelargecongregationpresenthadattendedtopaytheir respecttothelateBishop.HisLord-

AtthefarewelltenderedtoSir JamesMitchell,thePremier,onWednesdayafternoonlast,priortohisdepartureforLondonontheState'sbusi ness.ArchbishopCiune.inthecourse ofaneloquentspeech,questioned whetheranyPremierhadeverleft thisStateatamorecriticalstagein itshistory.and,furthermore,whether anyonehailhadtodealwithquestions fraughtwithsuchgraveconsequences tothefinancialstabilityandwelfare oftheStateasconfrontedSirJames Mitchell.(Hear,hear.)TheState wasveryfortunateinitsambassador. Thefollowingistakenfromthe usualRomeNewsfeatureoftheDublin"CatholicBulletin,"asappearing intheJanuarynumber,thelatestto hand.Inanothercolumnisrelated theextentoftheinroadsofBritish propagandathroughthepressagencies,sobusilyengageduptoand sincethemomentousDecember6, 1921.Thecablesarenottheonly meansofconcoctionemployedbyJ.B. Personalandofficialchannelswere apparentlyexercised,andwellnigh successfully,aswillbeseen:"Nearlyayearagowehadavisit herefromleisGracetheArchbishopot Perth,tnenfreshfromhissincereout abortiveattempttoachieveacessation ofhostilitiesinIreland. Thefirst eveningwemethimhegrippedour attentionandheldourinterestashe toldusinviv:ddetailhisstoryot"the crueltiesoftheBlack-and-Tans..In theRomantwilightandinatense silencebrokenonlybythewordsthat fellfromthelipsoftheArchbishop,we heardstimngtalesofnraveryand piteousheartoreakingstoriesofagony andtorture. Weheardagainthe tales,oft-toldinIrishhistory,of huntedmenandanxiouspraying women.AndthenoneeveningHis Gracetold"usaRomantalethatfilled uswithwonderandapprehension. itwasthetaleofacondemnation abouttobelaunchedfromtheVatican againsttheSinnFeinmovementin Ireland.acondemnationthepreparationofwhichhadbeenverycarefully concealedfromIrishmeninRome.In thishourofreminiscencethattaleis worthrecalling.ItseemsthatDr. Clune'svisitwasalmostprovidential. Hewasfortunateenoughtobejustin timetodissuadetheeccleciasticalauthoritiesherefrompublishingadocumentcondemningthewholeIrish movement,initsSinnFeinform;particularattentionwastobedirectedto theshootingsofEnglishsoldiersand policemen,andsuchincidentswereto bedenouncedascontrarytotheFifth Commandment.Thevaliantprelate lostnotimeingettingintoimmediate touchwiththeresponsibleauthorities here.Luckilytherewaspresentin Romeaboutthesametimeonewho haslongbeenafriendofIreland,the BishopofSouthwark. Welearned thattheBishopablysecondedthe effortsofDr.Clyne,withtheresult thatthedangerwasavertedforthe timebeing.FromDr.Clune'swords itappearedthatnotonlyhadthedocu-

Butno.Itisnow"confusionworse confounded"-withal,wehopeandbelieveitisnotthefaultofIrelandor theIrish.Theseinstancesof calpropagandaplots,-steepedcab:es. andjournalism,havemonopolised attentionofthepeopleoftheDosnin'ons.who,wealwaysusedtounderstand,werenotinterestedinIrishaffairs,alwayshavinghad"enough troublesoftheirown."Perhapsthe crowningfeatureoftheblood-curdling yarnsconcoctedbythecablemongers isoneofseveral,datedLondon,15th. February:

"WilliamWaring,thecaretakerof theOrangeHall,waswalkinginRegentStreet,whenaRomanCatholic gunmankneltdown,puthisrifleto hisshoulderandkilledWaring." Withsuch"news"asthisformulatedinLondonforworldwideconsumption,readerswillnotwonderatus beingsparingwithspaceinourcolumns.

ThecommitteeoftheAltarSocietyofSt.Joseph'sChurch,Northam,held aeuchretournamentanddanreon Wednesdaynight,Feb.1st..inaidof Churchfunds.andprovedmostsuccessful.Thesocietywillbenefittothe extentofsomethinglike£14.The largespaciousvertandahofSt.Joseph'sSchool-roomwasarrangedfor comfortofthosetakingpartinthe euchretournament,thehallbeingreservedforthedancers.Iceddrinks anddaintyrefreshmentswereserved.
