ThoughregrettablethattheEnglish CatholicConfederation,atitsrecent conference,shouldhavepassedaresolutiondeclaringthataCatholiccannot lieaSocialist,andthattheLabour PartyhasbecomeSocialistic,itisgratifyingthatauthoritativerepudiation ofthisresolutionhasbeensoemphatic andsoprompt,observestheAveMaria. Itwasmoved,itseems,byMr.Thomas Burns,whohasdonegreatworkon behalfofCatholicinterestsinthelabourmovement,butoflatehasbeen devotinghisenergiestopropagating theviewthatnoCatholiccanconsistentlyidentifyhimselfwiththeLabourParty.Hehasbeengoingtoo farandtoofast.Thematterisbeing investigatedbytheHolySee,andthere hasbeennocondemnationofCatholic tradeunionists.
AcorrespondentoftheLondonTablet,writingfromtheCathedralClergy House,remarks:"Surelyitbelongs,in thefirstplace,toCatholicbishopsto denouncewhatisdangeroustofaith andmorals;andsurelyitisunfitting foramixedbodyoflaityandclergy withnocanonicalstatustoassume thisessentiallyepiscopalfunction,and thatinamostcontentiousmatter,affectingtheconsciencesofthousands."
