Itgiveshimunboundedhoneforthe future,andwecanallhopeforthe honourablerecognitionbyallsections ofthepeopleofthegoodworkthatis beingdone,. AllofusdirectlyinterestedinCatholiceducation,forweallpayheavilythroughourchurchcollectionsforits, maintenanceandincrease.Weshould thenalwaysbeconsideringhowour nun-Catholicneighbourscanbebrought toseethereasonoftheattitudewe takeup.Wehaveindeedavariety ofarguments.Wecanhopetoevoke theiradmirationfroursplendidsystembyconstantlyaddingtoand strengtheningit:thentheirinterest andtheirsympatliamayforow.Followingotherlines.wecaninsistupon ourunitywiththeminthematterof seculareducation.Itastrikingpassage,thegracefulnessofwhichImust spoilforthesakeofextracting,.the Rev.JosephRickaby,S.J..remarks. ThereisaSaying,"Agoodmanis hardtofind."Anaevenharderis thelossofagoodman.Frommany pointsofview,thelossoccasionedby thedeathofMr.HenrySteadisvery sadandveryserious.HeoccupiedanoutstandingpositioninAustralian. journalism,andwewereveryfortunate thathestayedamongus,whenso manyothermenattalentandenergy gotootherpartsoftheworld.Henry Steadhadahardtaskinconvincing Australiansoftheimportanceofforeignpolitics,butheachievedhispurposebythedownrighthonesty,franknessandbrillianceoftheworkheput beforethepublic.Manytimesduring thewarhewassulajectedtocfficialinterferencebythosewhosepatriotism wassopettythattheyfe.iiedthe truth.Steadsteeredwisely.butnever waveredinhisallegiancetothetruth. Itiswellinallco-ninunitie3tohave menwhobringeverythinginpublic affairsunderthestronglightofpracticability,menwhowithexperience andoriginalityoftheirownareconstantlyaskingthequestions"How"and"Why"?ThiswaswhatStead did,inamasterlyway,nordidheforgetthatspiritualforcesareaspotent asmaterialones,aril.bytheftpower playtheirpartit:worldpolitics.We whoregrethisuntimelydeathhavea duty thecastuponourselvestoremember knowledgehehasputbeforeus, whenwedoourbest,withouthisguidance,toconcernourselyeswithmattersofhighpolicy.
Comingdowntomoreparticular things,wecanrememberthatMr. Steadalwaysshowedarecognitionof theCatholicChurchinawaythatwe canneverfindinotherAustralian journals.Sonietimeshediffered fromwhatwasdonebytheChurch.on bysomepfitsrepresentativesBut insuchadivergenceofpoliticalviews thereisnocauseforcontention.As aCatholicIfeelthathedidstandso muchmorecloselythanothersnear tothatpileofCatholicprinciples whichyetagainwillregeneratesociety,savingitassinanarchismand "renewingallthinginChrist."
Moreobviouswasthesympathetic handlingofIrishnewsthatagain aloneofAustraliannewspapers,we foundin"Stead'sReview."Practicallyallotherjotraalsshowedwilful, andwofulignoranceofeverythingconnectedwithIrishaffairs;mostpublic meninAustralia,blindlyledbythe blind,exhibitedequalignorance,and, moreover,attamselthosebetter-informedthanthemselves.Yetbad theystudied'Stead's"theywould havefoundfactsreriteduponwhich theirjudgmentswouldhavebeenmade moreintelligentandlessbitter "AustraliaatLourdes."
