Duringthetwohoursthisagony wasdrawnoutwithintheprisonthecon,lemnedmenwereexecuted intwosetintervalsof hour:ThomasWheelanandPatrick Moranat6a.m. PatrickDoyleandBernardRyan at7a.m. FrancisFloodandThomasBryan at8a.m. ThomasWheelanendPatrick Morandereaccusedofbeingconcernedinthetragedie':ofthemorningofNovember21,whenBritish officerswereshot-chargeswhich theyvigorouslydenieduptothe lastmoment. F.Flood,T.Bryan,P.Doyle,and It.Ryan-werechargedwithhigh treason-levyingwaragainstthe Kinginanattemptedambushat Drumconetra.Afifthyouth,DermotO'Sullivan,GlengatiffeParade.

Dublin,wasalsosentencedtodeath inconnectionwiththeDrumcondra ambush,butwasreprievedbythe LordLieutenant.Eve,.thosemost opposedtopopularconvictionswere heardtoexpresstheopinionfreely thatthevictimsweremoreinnocentthanguilty.Infact,the chargebroughtagainstthemwas thattheywereinpossessionof arms.Itisover100yearssincean Irishmanwasputtodeathforhay'ingarmsabouthisperson!Asfar asthehonestyorjusticeofthe chargegoes,indusputableandcot roborrativeevidencewasgivenat the"trial"thatatleastone'ofthe "accused"wasnotattheambush atDrunnondraatall,witnesses,includingapriest,testifyingthathe wasinBlackrockatthetimeofthe saidambush!

Dublin,wakeningfromsleep, sensedtheimpendingtragedyof Mountjoy.Itwasindeeaacityof tragedyonthatday-acentreof mourning,acityofthedead-when between6a.m.andSann..six Irishmen,someofthemmerely boys,yieldeduptheiryounglives onthescaffoldwithinMountjoy Prison. Nofactorywhistlewasheard,no chimeofbelt-theoilytollbeing thatfromchurchyardorsteeple callingthefaithfultoworship.No clangoftram,noroarorrattleof carormotor,norumbleoftrain-no soundofhumanactivitydisturbed thesolemnsilencethathungheavilyovertheentirecity. StoppageofWork. Therewasagenera'stoppageof trafficandbusinessinDublinand thecoasttownshipsuptonoonas aprotestagainsttaeexecutions. VastcongregationsattendedMasses inthevariouschurchesfromearly morningandofferedprayersforthe doomedmen. Themilitarywereconfinedto barracks,anditisstated.thoughun officially,thattheyweresoconfinedpracticallyallthatweek. Dublin'sDeepTribute. Seldom,ifever,wasDublinso deeplystirred.Beforedawncrowds begantogatherroundtheprison, andatonetime,itisraid,there musthavebeen40.000persons,all

andOurBlessedLady,surrounded bylights.Herewereofferedprayerswhich'lavesoconsoledtheheart oftheIrishCatholicthroughcenturiesofpersecutionandproscriptionatthemomentofmartyrdom forGodandcountry.Mostofthose inthegreatcongregation(forsuch thegatheringmightbecalled)were young,andthesoundcftheirvoices ontheearastheysaidtheinvocationsandraisedtheorisonsforthe welfareoftheyoungheroesonthe edgeofthegravewillneverbeforgottenbyanywhobeardthem. HeretheheroicmotherofThomas Wheelan,cladinherWesterngarb, tookherplacetojoininthedhorus ofprayerforherdyingson.Her nativeplaceisSlyneHead.170 milesfromDublin.Herjourney toDublinwasthelongestsheever madeinherlife,ariaitwasthe firsttimeshehadevertravelledin atrainThesceneatthisjuncturewasso thrillingandoverwhelmingthat eventhesoldiersinanarmoured carstationednearleantoverinsilentaweandwonder.Asthefatal hourofsixapproached,thecrowds grewinimmensity,andtheRosary continuedtoberecsteduptothe verylastmoment. Inthemidstoftheprayerful scene,andwhendawnwasbreaking, apartyofmilitarymovedsilently throughthecrowds,andcontinued" topatrolthevicinityforaconsiderabletime.They,too,wereobviouslymovedbythespectacleoftn. kneelingcrowds,whileD.M.P.constableswhofollowedsoonafterwards,raisedtheirhelmetsreverentlyastheypassedthestatues. Therewasasenate]ideathatthe prisonbellwouldbetolledpriorto theexecutions, inthecaseof KevinBarry,buttherewas,nosuch indication.aeditwasassumedat Io'clockthatThomasWheelanand PatrickMoranhadmettheirfate. ThepeoplewerekneelingorstandingfromabovetheProtestant ChurchofSt.AugustinetobeyondtheMetropolitanPoliceStation. Theyspreadalloverthewidethoroughfare,andrecitedtheLitanyfur theDyingwithintensedevotional feeling.

ThewordsofyoungWheelan's mothermustbechrovicleciwhen everthestoryofherbravesonis told.Questionedatthejailgates whileherboywasstillaliveshesaid shecouldnotverywellexpressher feelings,owingtot'ieexperience throughwhichshehadjustpassed.
