Thelightnessandlaughterandsong which'undo-favourablecircumstancestypifytheCeltinhishomeland,andwhichcharacteriseshim underalienskiesabroadissomewhatsubduedthesedaysunderthe blightinginfluencesofthatspecies ofrulewhichpassesasGovernment inIreland.Theknowledgethat theirbelovedcountryispassing throughoneofthefierceststruggles inherhistenytoretainherindividualityamongstthenationsandher faithandgoodreppteasaChristian nation,chokesthatlaughterwhen itwouldrisefromtheirheartsto theirlips,andtouchesthatchord ofmelancholywhichunfortunately manifestsitselfsofrequentlyin theirnationalmusicandsong. Rightroundtheworldwhereverthe GadforegatheredontheirNational FeastDay,theshadowoftheIrish tragedyobtrudeditself.Itwas onlynaturalthatitshould,forexile hasnotrobondIrelandofherexile's love,ithasintensifiedthatloveand madeit,ifanythingatall,more spiritual,strong,andwistfulbecauseclarifiedbydistanceandfond memories.ThedreamofIreland freeisnomere,passingphantomto theIrishwhetherintheOldLand iginthemanylandswheredestiny hastransplantedthem.Itisaliving,passionate,throbbinghopethat willnotbedownedbyvariationsor vicissitudesinthestormandstruggleathome.OnSt.Patrick'sDay athomeandabroad,thesentiment andfaithoftheiace,clustering roundtheshamrockandtheimmortalgreenemptiestheirrichtributes totheOldMotherland,renewing againtheirvowsofdevotionand love.AndsoitistheeternalIrish causegoesonuninterruptedbyperseentionortemporarydefeat,and willgoon.untilthatGod'sdayin thefuturewhenthisdreamcomes trueandIrelandagainisanation grentandgrand. InPerthonthe17ththecrimson chordofkinshipunitedtheIrish ofthisStatewiththeirbrethren throughcaittheCommonwealthana, notwithstandingtheshadowat Home,therewasthesameindestructiblevigcroussentimentoflove manifestedforthelandofthetear andthesmile.Irishsentimentin thiscountryisunitedanddeterminedthatjusticeshallbedonetothe 'Idcradlelandortheirrace. ThefairhillsofErinwerefar away,butmemorybroughtthem verynear. Themorningbrokesplendidlyfavourabletothecelebrationofthe FeastofIreland'sPatronSaintand thecrowdsgatheringinMurraystreetaroundtheHibernianHall andintheCathedralgroundsin-heatedaverysuccessfulfeastday. ATTHECATHEDRAL. AsusualHolyMassprecededthe day'sprogramme.WithintheCathedral.waspresentedanexample ofthatdeep-seatedFaithwhichhas spiritualisedthelongdrawnoutand poignantsruggleforIrishfreedom. Everyinchof

TeutonfromtheRhine,theFrank fromtheSeine,theRomanfromthe Tiber,andthePittandScotfrom thenorthofBritain,allcamethere tobeinstructedinthedoctrines oftheChristianFaith. Gazingfondlystillonthat"dear littleplant,"theexileseesinfancy itspetalsbedewedwiththeblood theIrishshedindefenceofthe faithfromthe16thCenturyonwards.Thestoryoftheirstruggle indefenceofChristianityinthe reignofHenryVIII.,rightthrough thereignsofthefirstStuarts,Elizabeth,andtheProtectorateof Cromwell,wheneveryenginethat Heacouldinvent,qrhumaningenuitywield,'wereexercisedontheIrish touprootthestandardofSt.Patrick'sfaith,isadarkandsadchapter.Butitisonlywhenpersecutionwasatitsheight,andwhenthe Irishhadtoleavetheirnative shores,didtheirrealworkforGod commence.Theirinnatelovefor theirfaithhelpedthemtodiffuse itineveryclimetheytouchedduringtheirwanderings.Andsincethe strongestfibreandthemostresponsivechordoftheIrishcharacter isrespectfbrSt.Patrick'sheritage, wealwaysfine',thatcharacteristic oftheIrishseekingmanifestation. Thatfaith,aschildrenof'theGael isours.asithasneverbeenfilched fromtheIrishbyfireorsword, bribers-orcorruption.Maythe samebetruetous.Maywealwaysconquerbythefaith,for"this isthevictorythatovercomeththe world-ourfaith."And,dearbrethern.asweturnoureyestowards thatlittleisle,sofaraway-sorrowladen,heart-broken,andblood-stained,fightinginthesamenoblecause inadifferentguise,wepraytoSt. PatrickandallourIrishSaints, thatforherownsake,foroursakes, forthesakeofthecivilisationof theworld,forthesakeoftheliving ChurchofChristwepray:"May GodSaveIreland."

THEPROCESSION. ImmediatelyaftertheMassthe variousschoolsandsocietieswen. gotintotheirallottedpositionsby thechiefmashal,Mr.Con.O'Brien. andgold,madeastrikingdisplayofthenationalsentimentwhichpervadedthecelebration.TheIrishNationalForesters - a

contenttowatchthepro ceedingsfrom,thegallery.When thecurtainasepunctuallytotime theaudience,bothipdimensions andbuoyantexpectation,viewed fromthestagewasaninspirationto everyartist.andtheconsequent happyprogressoftheconcertitems wasamatterofcomparativeease, althougheverycreditmustbegiven tothoseinwhosehandsthemanagementoftheprogrammewasentrusted.Frombeginningtoendthe concertwasexcellentineverydetail.Suchanall-roundsuccessful functionresulted,orwaspossible, onlybecauseofunitedsupporttenthoseresponsiblefoetheirvarious performances.Thescenestheyenactedweresostriking,andstruck sodeepintoIrishhearts.thatnothinglessthanappreciativefurorerewardedtheboysalaigirlsintheir respectivedisplays.TheSistersand ChristianBrothersagainmerited, andreceived,theutmostrewardfor theirunceasingendeavoursindrawingonthebestthatisinyouthto demonstrateIrishaspirations,and theundying,unyieldingspiritofthe Race. Inspired,undoubtedly,byellewonderfulsuccessofthecelebrationson thedaybefore.St.Patrick'sDay, perhapsthelargestnumberofregularandsecularclergyandreligious yetwerepresentattheconcert.His GraceArchbishopChine,withMonsignorVerlingV.G.,andFather McMahon,MA.,.wereaccommodatedinthemid-frontofthedresselide.Thegreataudiencewasvery enthusiastic,eachitemreceivingdue recognition. Theriseofthecurtainrevealedan orchestraofaboutfourteenstringed instrumente.violins,'cello,and piano,underthedirectionofMr. Nowotny.Theitemconsistedof anicearrangementoftheenchantingoldIrishmelodies,whichwere mostcreditablyandspiritedlyrendered.ThemembersoftheorchestraarepupilsofSt.Brigid'sConvent.WestPerth,Ihesecondnumwas'yenb:irisfromSt.Jos-
