Theycouldnotgetonwithoutthese -buildings.Nosectionofthecommunityhadsomanyschoolsastheir peopleorgaveastheygavetowards schools,orphanages,andcharitable institutions. Whentheyerected buildingstheyhadtobeenlarged lateron.Hehadneverceased building.andwasneverlikelyto ceasesolongashelived.(Laughter).Hethoroughlysympatthised withthefaithfulfewintheparishes. andthepriestswhohadtocarryon thiswork.Hecouldsayveryfeelinglythatsogreathadbeenthe strainonhisownprivateresource, sincehehadbeenArchbishopthat hehadneverbeenabletosavea poundforhisoldage.Thatwould nothavebeensoifallhaddone theirduty.Therewereoutstandingexamplesofmenwhohaddone theirduty,butthegreatmajority ofthewealthypeopledidnothing forcharity,religion,oreducationin thewayofgiving.Thiswasalso truewithregardtothegreatpublic institutions-theUniversityand otherinstitutions-anduntilthe wealthyputtheirhandsintheir pocketsandhelpedtheconditions wouldremainunchanged.

TheFreeStateNationalistCongressto-daywasmainlyengagedon "hardyannuals."Aninteresting discussion,however,wasraisedon theIrishquestion.Referringto this,Mr.CharlesG.Fichardt, NI.L.A.,saidthattheIrishquestion wasaworldquestion.InAmerica andotherplacesthequestionwas notregardedasadomesticmatter, andeveryonesympathisedwiththe effortsoftheIrishtohavetheright ofself-determination.Hemoved: "ThatthismeetingoftheNational PartyoftheO.F.S.sincerelysympathiseswiththeendeavoursofthe Irishpeopletogetanacknowledgmentfromthenationsoftheworld oftherepublicfoundedbythem.Inthisconnection,themeeting herewithwishestoexpressitsopinionthattherightofself-determinationofnations,aslaiddownasa principlebyGreatBritainandher Alliesisnotonlytobeappliedto thoseportionsoftheBritishEmpirewhichpossessstatusofdominions,butalsoparticularlyinthe caseofacivilisedanddeveloped peoplesuchastheIrishpeople,and trustsfurtherthatthespiritofjusticeandsoundintelligenceofthe civilisednationsoftheworldwill ensureafullandspeedyrecognition oftheIrishRepublicasbasedon thewillofthepeopleofIreland."
