Bytherecentdevilishoutburstsofoneoftheseindividuals,Hughes,whounhappilyandunforunatelyhasassumedmorepowerasPrimeMinisterofthisoutpostof theEmpirethanprobablyanyEuropeanmonarchorPresidentwouldventuretouse,itissurelypatenttoanyoneofsenseandnormalbearingthatachangeforbetterandmore balancedmentalcalibre,sonecessaryforsoundandwisestatesmanship,isbadlyneededintheinterestsofAustralia.IsittoomuchtoexpectastheresultofthePrimeMinister'sblasphemyintheHouseofRepresentativestheotherdayandhislyingandprovocativeharanguelast SaturdayatBendigothatthepeoplewilltakestockofthesituationstaringAustraliainthefaceatthepresentmomentandaskthemselveswhoisthecans.ofit,andwhatis tobedone? WhatledtoSaturday'stiradeofprejudice,wholesaleabuseandhyprociticalrantingthepeopleofthisstatehavehadnochancecfascertaining.Thelocaldailypress chooses.what'news'bestsuitsitsownendsforpublication.Itssupportersareleftlamentingforatruthfulversionofaffairsastheyhappen.

TheCivilServiceStrike,asasecularcurrentsubject,isaninstance:whichmakesitcleartotheCivilServantsthemselveswhattoexpectfromthedailypress.How musteveryCivilServantviewtheversionpublishedinthepapersespeciallywhenthecircumstancesresponsibleforthepresentsituationinPerthare,infact,opposedtothe viewsoftheGovernment?Theyknow,asthepublic,areatlastbeginningtolearn,thatthedailypresssimplymisrepresentsthesituationfromallbuttheGovernment'spoint ofviewindeeditassiststheGovernmenttomis-repreentthecaseinpoint.Soitisbytheomissionofcertaininformation,ofwhichthepeoplehaveeveryrighttobeinformed, thepurposeofmisrepresentationisalsoachievedHenceitisthatwhenPrimeMinisterHughesfallsfouloftheLoyalOrangeLodgeofVictoria,ashedidlastweek,whenthe MelbourneTownHallsocomodateda'crowdedmeetingofultra-loyalsupportersofthecrownanddecriersofthesalary'grab'somethingLastobedonetowinbackfavor. ItcansafelybesurmisedthatthatcrowdofpeoplewaxedwarmtothetuneofthenotoriousWoodfall,SnowballCo.intheirdenunciationofHughesandPearceandthe FederalGovernment.Again,itwillcomeasasurprisetoourreaderstolearnthatafewdaysprevioustoHughes'tyrannicaloutburst,oneofthelargestmonsterdemonstrationsthatBendigohasseentookplacetoupholdFatherJ.J.Kennedy,D.S.O.,whohadbeenshamefullybeguiledasadisloyalist(!)bystaginghisplay,"Advance Australia,"which,itwasalleged,portrayeddisloyalelements.Thismeetingwasamagnificentsucccessasanemphaticprotestagainstthevilliauousattacksmadeonthe characterofFatherKennedy.HappeningasitdidinthePrimeMinister'sownconstituencywasjusttoomuchforHughestowithstandontopofhavinglostfavourwith hisfriends,theOrangefanatics. Thereremainedonlyonethingforhimtodoatallcostshehadtoregaintheconfidenceofthesescandal-mongers.Beingconscious,therefore,ofhisvituperative ability,andbackedsoablybythedailyPressofAustralia,hetookthefirstopportunitytopounceuponanall-too-patientpublic.Thecravenoutpouringofhisnarrow, embitteredmindhasalreadybeenwidelyread-withapprovalorotherwise,asitremainstobeseen.Butthereshouldnotbeanydoubtwhatevernowinthemindsof tolerantcitizensthatthewonderfulpersonalityandintellectofDr.MannixovershadowHughessocompletelythatnothregshortofuncontrollable,thoughdeliberate,ranting seemstosatisfyhisvenomouspurpose.NordoesDr.Mannix'sghostseemtohimtobecomelessawfulbytheArchbishop'sabsencefromAustralia.Indeed,thefactthatpoor FatherJerger'sbodywasstillinAustraliabeingbuffettedaboutfrompillartopost,apparentlytohisandPea'rce'sinstructions(thesetwoCzarswerecertainlyinthefull knowledgeofwhatwasgoingorr),addedmentalglosstothesituation,withwhatresultlastMonday'sWestAustralianwaswellable-itdiditsbest-toproclaim. Itisadailypaper-a"Nationalist"organ-sowhyhavemisgivingscoucerningitspeglectinnotdealingwiththeauthorofsectarianisminthisfairlandasdecent mouthpiecesofpublicopinionshoulddo-astheCatholicPressdoes?Fromthedaily-Press,thehirelingsofeveryGovernmentbutaPeople'sGovernment,abetterand moregenerousspiritisexpected,andbyCatholicsdemanded,intheinterestsofpeaceandgoodwill.

However,thevirtueofHope,thanksbetoGod,isaninexhaustiblefountaininwhichsolaceanddesireabound.Wecanconsequentlylookwithfortitudetoft welcomefinishtothepresentgalaxyoffatuousandfalsenotionsregardingthesafetyoftheRealmandthepreservationoftheEmpire,andtoaningloriousendtoany Governmentwhoseprincipalsaresosteepedinreligionsprejudiceandhatredandwhosesupporterswho,ifnotopenlyasbigoted,cunninglyencouragetheirleaderandhis satellite(Pearce)topoliticalsuicidebytheirsilentacquiescence.Thusisthisgrandyoungland"governed!"

AtthisstagewewishtostatethatbothFatherJergerandatleastoneofhissisterswereeducatedinPerthintheiryouth.Thisisaccordingtoourownpersonal knowledge,whilstmanypeoplehaveinformedusthatthey,aswe,wereactuallyschooledwithFatherJergerandhissisterinearlyPerth.

FATHERJERGER'SJOURNEYTOADELAIDE.

Fr.JergerwastakenfromQueensclifftoLeighCreek,thenonthe AdelaideexpresstoMitcham,thentoNorthAdelaideBarracks.Those attemptstoputFr.Jerger'sfriendsoffthetrail,andoutofcommunicationwithhim,haveallfailed.Informationofhiswhereaboutshas beenavailableeveryday,owingtothealertnessofsympathisersand thepersonaleffortsofMr.JohnWren,whohimselfwenttoAdelaide tosetthejudicialproceedingsinorderforthereleaseofFr.Jerger.

SENSATIONALDEVELOPMENTS ATADELAIDE. Sincewewenttopresslastweek (saysTheSouthernCross,Adelaide),anewandsensationaldevelopmenthas_occurredinregardto theattemptoftheHughesGovernmentandmilitarytodeportFather CharlesJerger,C.P.,

Parliamentandtodowhateverwa, possible.MembersoftheLabourPartyin theStateParliamentdiscussedthe subjectatlunchtime,andwere greatlyincensed.Asaresultitwas arrangedtoholdamassmeetingof protestattheTradesHallonFridayevening,andanothergreatmass meetingintheBotanicParkon Sundayafternoon;alsotoapplyforawritofhabeascorpustothe SupremeCourt.

Jerger.Itisreportedthat thecaptain,thecrew,andthepassengersoftheNestortreatedFr. Jergerwithexceptionalkindnessandcourtesy.liewasseenseveral timeswalkingondeck. Tuesday.-Mr.WrenmadepublicpartofaletterwhichhehadreceivedfromFr.Jerger,andwhichreadsasfollows:"IhavecommittednocrimeagainstAustraliaorherpeople. Myconscienceismuchclearerthananyofmyaccusers.Iampre. paredtoletanyAustralianjudgeorjurydecidebetweenmeand thosewhoseemdeterminedtobreakmeinhealthandspirit.They havedonetheirworst,buttheyhaveonlysucceededindisgracing theirposition,andputtingAustralia,acountrytowhichtheydo notbelong,in

Thefactthatitwasintendedto ,deportFatherJerger,ofSydney, outofthecountrybytheBlueFunnellinerNestorarousedconsiderableinterestattheOuterHarbour onSaturdaymorning.Thedecision oftheseamenandfiremenonthe previousafternoonthattheywould notmanthesteamerifanyattempt weremadetoputtheprieston boardcausedmuchanxietyamong thepassengers,captain,andofficers, whowerehopefulthatthetrouble wouldbeaverted.Asamatterof fact,theNestorgotawayfromthe wharfwithoutFatherJergeron board.Attheanchorage,however, thehugevesselwasobservedto cometoastandstill.ItsubsequentlytranspiredthatFatherJergerhad beenputaboardat

Mr.EdwardssteppedforwardandinformedtheCommandantthathe knewFatherJergerwasinAdelaide. andthathedesiredtogetpermissiontospeaktohiminthepresenceofamilitaryguard.The Generallookedsurprised,andrepliedthatalthoughhedidnotdesire toplaceanyobstacleinMr.Edwards'way,hehadtoobservehis instructionsfromMelbourne,which weretotheeffectthatnoperson wastoseethereverendfather.

Mr.EdwardsalsowiredtoMr. FrankTudor,LeaderoftheLabour PartyintheHouseofRepresentatives,andnotreceivingareply spoketohimthroughthetelephone. HetoldhimofFatherJerger'sarrivalinAdelaide,andaskedhimto PlacethefactsbeforetheFederal

Harbourbyriver.Buttheydid notcountonmeetingopposition fromthecrewofthelaunchwhich wasengagedforthepurpose.To theirsurprisethecrewofthelaunch declinedtotakethedeportee.That ofcourse,complicatedmatters,as itwasnotdesiredtotaketheclergymantotheOuterHarbourby trainorroad.Consequentlythe policelaunchwascommissioned.A numberofpoliceofficials,including Sub-InspectorFraser,wenttothe OuterHarbourinthelaunch,but noattempt,itisunderstood,was madetoplaceFatherJergeron boardwhiletheNestorlayatthe wharf:Theywaiteduntilshehad steamedthreemilesoutsidetheterritoriallimits.andtheretheyplaced theirprisoneronthesteamer. WhiletheNestorwasatthequaysidetheseamenand
