Socialists Melbourne,July6,1920. MybriefletterlastweekwaswrittenimmediatelyafterreadinganarticleintheArgus,astotherebeing agooddealoffrictionbetweenthe AustralianCatholicFederationand thenewly-formedAmalgamated Men'sClubs.AsaCatholicpaper remarked,itwasa"sensational"ar tide,butonconsiderationitsimportancedecreased.Tothisitem theArgusgavethree-quartersofa columnofitsmoreorlessvaluable space.That,wemayreflect,is overthreetimesthespaceitallottedtoanaccountoftheExhibition farewelltohisGracetheArchbishop,andnearlythreetimeswhatit gavetheSt.Patrick'sDayproces. sion.Ifweaskourselveswhythe Argusdidthis,we,haveastandard bywhichtojudgethecase.This pretendedsolicitudeforCatholic unity,andthisparadeofdistorted facts,wereinsertedsimplyasapart ofthedirtysectariangametheArgushaseverplayed.From1850, whenitspokeofIrishgirl-immigrants as"poor,stunted,ignorantcreatures,"till1920,whenitsaidthat "allloyalcitizens"willapproveof thebanishmentofanuntriedCatholicpriest-whatahistoryof calumny!Andbythistimeweshouldsurelyknowhowtotreatsuchanattack.AstheArchbishophassaid, "Achargethat.restsontheauthorityoftheArguswilldolittleharm;" and,again,"WhenCatholicswant advice,theywillgoelsewherethan totheArgusofficeforit."TheArgusarticlewaseffectivelyanswered bytwolettersinthefollowingday's issue:CATHOLICFEDERATION.

Withoutofferinganyfurthercommentonyourarticlewemaysay thattheFederationisnotjnany waydesirousofenteringintoa newspapercontroversyuponmatterswhicharepurelyCatholic. Sir.-ItisstatedintheArgustodaythat"iftherealpromotersof theprocessionweretobeimposed onthem(Catholics)asthefuture representativesoftheChurch,they hadpaidtoodearlyforthesuccess."AsgeneralsecretaryofSt. Patrick'sDayprocessioncommittee, Istronglyresentanyinsinuationnos gardingthecommitteetowhichI hadthehonourtobelong.Theprocessionwasentirelyinthehandsof mycommittee,.andwasorganised byMessrs.P.Delaney(president) andA.Mitchell(secretary),andI challengeanyonetoprovethatit wascontrolledbyanyotherpower. Thesoldiers'seotionwasarranged byCaptainsF.FrawleyandM.McKegna,andmycommitteepaidthe expensesincurredinthatdirection. Thecelebrationcommitteehasalwaysbeenappointedfromthethree nationalsocieties(tworepresentativesfromeachbranch),andother Catholicandnationalorganisations, besidesprominentCatholicsfrom theparishes.Thesearetheonly sourcesfromwhichthemembersare chosen.-Yours,etc.,L.P.EGAN, GeneralSecretary,St.Patrick'sDa, CelebrationCommittee. June30. AnotherArgusAttack. Havingfoundthisattacksomethinginthenatureofa"dud,"the Arguscameyesterdaywithafresh charge.Aplaycalled"Advance Australia,"writtenbytheRev. FatherJ.J.Kennedy,wasperformedonSaturdayafternooninBendigo.Itdealtfranklywithrecent history,andseemstohaveattacked thatImperialism

of theassailantsoftheChurch. Theclausewhichprovokedthedebateassertedthat"thecapitalists ownthepeople'schurchesandregulatetheirsouls."This"declaration"waspreparedbyacommittee ofwhichMorrisHillqust,oneofthe chiefprophetsofAmericansocialism,waschairman.Onespeaker whodeniedthatthe"declaration" wastruewasroundlyhissed. Insupportingthemotiontoadopt theclauseVictorBergersaidthe CatholicChurchopposedSocialism "becauseitspolicyisdictatedby thePope,whoisguidedbyadvisers inFranceandGermany."Berger saidtheProtestantsectsarenotall hostiletoSocialism.Ministersin Wisconsin,inmanyinstances,are studyingsocialjsticdoctrines,he said. A.DiLuca,oftheItalianFederation,afraternaldelegate,saiditwas abouttimethattheSocialistparty awoketothefactthatit"hadthe priestsandthechurchestofightas wellascapitalism." Oneadvocateofthe"declaration" onthesubjectofchurchessoughtto amendtheclausebyaddingapronouncementinfavouroftaxingthe propertyofallreligiousorganisations. Afterasharpconflictofwords thatpartoftheclausewhichallegedthatthe"capitalists"ownthe people'schurcheswaseliminated. Apparently,theconvention'sfinal determinationtowithholdanyex pressionofhostilitytochurchesand religionwasgroundedinpolicy. TheviewthatthepartyshouldrefrainfromopenantagonismtoreligionwasvoicedbyWilliamKarlin cfNewYork. Thismorning'sAgementionsthis fact,andstatesthatFatherKennedywasrecommendedforaV.C., butgivenadecorationofthenext grade.TheAgealsosaysthat, thoughsomeresignationshadtaken placeinthecast,theperformance containednootherincident.No oneleftthetheatre,andProtestants tookalargeshareincheersand callsfortheauthor.
