Accordingly when they got to No. 5 they were told that McGarry did not live there. If their info mant had been any way decent he would have stopped at that, but the joke of it all (it come to that, eventually) is that this particular individual is anti -Sinn Fein. He, therefore, told the soldiers that McGarry lived in No. 27. But the incident had given their victim time to escape. Before they went to No 5, they had completely surrounded it, and the fields behind were planted with armed men, so that the whole street was awake. McGarry did not wait for them to come to No. 27, but cleared at once. Making no Mistake. Now, when they got to No. 27, the the door was opened by McGarry's brother-in-law, Mr. Mombrum, who happens to be an. "Who Are You?" Having once again saved Ireland for the Empire, the soldiers withdrew with the honours of war, failing, by the way, to note a big tricolour flying saucily above No. 27. The lorry rumbled off, and after going some distance, Mr. Mombrum discovered the other man under arrest. "Who are you?" he asked. "I'm supposed to be Sean McGarry," was the wrathful and disgusted reply. "Be damned," the Englishman replied, "I'm supposed to be . Mombrum was Sean McGarry!" . released with an apology on Saturday. but to the delight of everybody, the other man was not, although the paper says that he has since been let out. He won't be too handy with his information to the soldiers in future. A somewhat similar thing happened when they went to arrest Mr. Duggan. M.P. As they missed him, they arrested his two brothers, but yesterday they were released. At 24 Munster street, the soldiers arrested eight men. No one knows whom they were looking for, but seven of the eight have since been released. One of the eight served in the navy for four years of the war. and is an Englishman. Another is a well-known Unionist. At another place five men were arrested similarly. All were subsequently released. It transpires that one was an ex -policeman, and another a strong Unionist. How Raids Are Conducted. In some houses the soldiers seized photos. of Pearse. Connolly, etc. In others they did not touch these "seditious documents." When they arrested Councillor J. V. Lawless they seized a photo. of himself in convict garb after the Rebellion, also one in volunteer uniform. Here they opened ud the piano as well, and searched the pic tures in frames on the walls! When they went to arrest the two brothers Fearon at 4 a.m., they began to hack in the door before giving the occupants a chance to open it. For two hours bayonetted soldiers kept the ladies of the house, who were only partly dressed. and were bare-footed, in a room in the bottom of the house, despite their requests to be allowed to get some warm clothing! This at 4 a.m. in the middle of win ter! Every box and receptacle was turned inside out. wardrobes emptied. files containing house receipts checked carefully. The ladies had some sort of revenge, for they seated themselves at the piano and played "God Save Ireland," "The Wearing o' the Green," and other national songs the whole time, to the edification of the interested neighbours. No documents or seditious articles of any kind were found, but Patrick and Michael Fear on were arrested The soldiers made a well -arranged at tempt to capture a desperate rebel named Gerald Crofts. This hardened wretch devoted his time to the coin position of Irish music, a seditious occupation that must be stifled! But despite the surrounding of the whole block of houses, Gerald was spirited away. The puzzled soldiers received much sympathy from the onlookers as they disconsolately drove away. "Sure, it's the Muse as tuk him," an old lady threw at them as a final bouquet. MILITARY PARADE STREWN. Bayonets Ready. Later Had just got this far when shouts in the street took me outside. It was to find a state of great excitement owing to military activity. It looks as if Dublin Castle is scared at the universal condemnation this ridiculous rounding up has evoked, and feared retaliation on the part of some in the community. Since 8 p.m. patrols of armed, trench equipped soldiers have been parading up and down the main streets of the city on both sides of the Liffey. Wedding Bells

O'DZA-BURRS. really Catholic and impresaivs wedding was celebrated recently by the Rev. Father Moss at the Cathedral, between Mr. John O'Dea, son of Mr. M. O'Dea, J.P., and Mrs. O'Dea, both well known and respected in Irish and Ca tholic circles, and Miss Margaret (Peg) Burke, whose parents were so well and favourably known on the Goldfields. The altar was beautifully decorated by the Nuns of the Convent of Mercy, Victoria Square, and the ceremony immediately preceded Nuptial Mass, dur. Mg which the couple received special blessings, and all their near relatives offered up their Holy Communion for the blessings of God to be showered on them all through their new state of life, on which they were that day entering. and truly such is the kind of marriage that is made and sealed in heaven, and that was intended to convey the full meaning to the words, "Whatsoever I shall bind together, let no man set The bride, entering the asunder." church on the arm of her brother, Mr Frank Burke, to the strains of the Ave Maria, looked enchanting in a beautiful dress of white georgette over charmeuse satin, with a train of marquis ette over georgette, beautifully trimmed with pearls and hand -made cher, elle lillies: she wore a wreath and veil and carried a bouquet of white roses Miss Dolly Burke, the bride's sister who assisted as bridesmaid, looked charming in a dress of white georgette, with touches of pale pink, and a white hat trimmed with pink roses: a bouquet of pink ruses being carried. The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr. Joe O'Dea, as best man. The impressiveness of the ceremony was enhanced by an excellent rendering of the Wedding March on the grand organ by Miss Wiggett as the happy couple were leaving the church. A very enjoyable and jolly break50 at fast was then partaken of Thomas-street, where Mrs. M. O'Dea (senr.) met the guests, looking very nice in a dress of heliotrope georgette with Oriental trimmings, and a black and white picture hat, and carrying a posie of gold roses. The RCN'. Father Moss presided at the breakfast, and the newly-married couple can truly say they had a happy start in their new life, as seldom does one attend a function at which such hearty and pleasant chatter prevail. THE RECORD.

Just one hundred years ago there passed away a great Austrian Redemptorist priest, Clement Hofbauer, whose holiness of life and fruitful labours for the Church have merited for him to be raised to the honour of the Catholic altars. Last month his centenary was celebrated at St. Clement's Redemptorist College, Galon4, N.S.W. In noting this event, we are reminded of the great work done for God and for the redemption of erring human nature by the Redemptorists since their coming to this State. In the latter 18th. and early 19th. century a wave of anti religious madness spread over a great part of Europe. Governments everywhere strove to stem the new current of democratic ideas issuing from the welter of the French Revolution, and sought by the most arbitrary means to grasp into their hands all elements of power and influence. It is clear that an institution like the Catholic Church would incur the hatred of such despots. By its influence with the peoples of the continent, its love for justice and fair dealing, its instinct for democratic ideals, its insistent claim to independence within the scope of its own proper jurisdiction, its broadness of vision. which transcended the mere nationalism of the arbitrary States set up by the Congress of Vienna, the Catholic Church was marked out as a sign to be contradicted, an institution to be robbed and gagged and persecuted. During the 19th. century, especially, the history of the Church is the record of a struggle against this nationalism gone mad, with its concomitant anti -religious Governments thought to qampaign. crush out Catholicism and set up national Churches, which would be sub servient to their whims: they sought to mould the mind of the youthful gen. eration to this tune; they would regulate details of public worship and religious organisation; they even sought to enter the seminaries, and so mould the minds of the young priests being trained therein. The fight for Catholic Emancipation in Ireland, and the struggle about the Veto, were but parts of the same movement all over Europe-a grim fight in which the Church sought to save her very existence, at any cost, as a Catholic insti tution. It is the peculiar merit of St. Clement Hofbauer that he was a fore-

:nest champion in this battle for Catholicism. By his preaching through. out Poland and Austria, by his fight for the Christian edttgeljon of youth, ions, he sought by his priestly minis to save young and old from this fanaticism emanating from ruling circles He would not have the Church an adjunct of the State; nor would he brook a theology built oh narrow nationalHe stood fur the old ways markism. ed out by the Saviour, and his centen. ars- sees the triumph of the cause he laboured for so ardently.
