TheEnglishreviewsforsomemonthspasthavebeenreally"illuminating"inonedirectionoranother,butperhapstheNationalReviewforlast Decemberstandsoutpre-eminentlyassuchinbeinganti-almost-everything -anti-Vaticanist,anti-Catholic,anti-Irish,anti-American.Onp.468aMr. HughE.M.Stutfieldcontributesanarticle:"RomanismandMilitarism." Itconstitutesonechapterofthisauthor'snewbook,"TheRomanMischiefMaker."Thearticleisa10-pagediatribe.Wegiveherewithoneofeasily ascoreofmoreinstancesofgratuitousvituperation,notwithstandingwhich (itissupposed)itwillputpeopleontherighttrack,assistthemto"think forthemselves,"andteachthemtoactaccordingtothedictatesofcommon senseinmattersspiritual!Thus:

"Inaggressiveambition,theabuseofhospitality,intreacheryand intrigueagainsttheStatesthatgivetheirmembersshelteranda home,thereisnotmuchtoehoosebetweenthetwosystems(Romanism andMilitarism),andtheirmethodsarealmostidentical.Othernations aregropingtheirwaypainfullyandimperfectlytowardsabrotherhoodofpeoples;RomeandPotsdamhavedonetheirutmosttoprevent unionorassimilation.Therearenosuchpatriots,inasense,asthe JunkerandtheJesuit,buttheirpatriotismisofthatsourrancidorder whichalwaysendsbytroublingtheworld.BothJesuitandGermanare undesirablealiens,buttheJesuitismuchmoretheundesirableofthe two.Bothareworking,notforthecountrytheyaremakingtheir temporaryhome,butforthegreatorganisationstheyrespectivelyserve and,whiletheGermanisanefficientandusefulworker,theJesuit,asa rule,remainsnothingbutaparasiteonthecommunitytowhichheattacheshimself.ThedominationofRome.ifsuchaneventisnowadays thinkable,wouldbe.inthelongrun,afargreaterevilfortheworld thanthetriumphofTeutonism.Itwouldnotbepleasanttobeunderthe jack-boot,butmencouldstillatleastcalltheirmindsandsoulstheir own. Verboten("YouMustn't")insmallthingsisannoying,butVerboteninthelargerempireofthespiritmeansself-mutilation.Itisirksometobeforcedtowalkononesideofthestreetwhenyouwanttowalk ontheother;nottobeabletothinkasyoulikeisdestructiveof characterandintellect.Thesoldierinmilitaristcountriesisgenerally agoodservant,butnearlyalwaysabadmaster,andthesamemaybe saideverywhereoftheecclesiastic."

Wedidnotattemptareply,butrealisingthatsuchaninfamousslander ontheCentreofChristianitywouldnotbeallowedtopassunchallengedby suchcontroversialistsasCanonrlarry.ortheVeryRev.VincentMcNabb, thegreatDominican,weawaitedtheEnglishmails.Wefoundthattheform_ ermetthesituation,happily,andwegivetoourreaderstheCanon'sreply asitappearedinthelatestissueoftheLondonCatholicTimes:Amongotherstrangemonsters,EnglandhasalwaysbredsinceElizabethan daysmenandwomennotafewof whomitisfairtosaythattheyhave "Romanism"onthebrain.Inthat curiousregimentMr.HughE.M. Stutfieldmayclaim,atleast,acaptain'srank.Hisvolume,"TheRoman Mischief-Maker"(London,Officeofthe NationalReview),whichliesonmy tableandnowsolicitsawordbyway ofcriticism,wouldnotbeunworthy oftheviolentpamphleteerswhomI readinthatportentouscollection namedfromtheParkerSociety.Like somanyotherProtestantassaultson Rome,itamazestheCatholic,who dreamsthatheknowssomethingabout hisownChurch,buttheauthor'sapparentbeliefindelusionsforwhich thereisnotashredofevidence,bythe wildestmistakesinregardtofacts. andbyinterpretationsofperfectly harmlessutterancestwistedintocriminalchargesagainstPopesanddivines. Butthemasterdelusionistosuppose that"theVatican,"undercontrolcf theJesuits,keepsuponeunchanging conspiracyofwhichtheobjectisto destroytheBritishEmpire,asbeing theheadandfrontofProtestantism. Thisveryabsurdimaginationhasno groundwhatever.Anditinvolvesa doublefallacy.TheRomanCuria haspracticaldutieswhichleavelittle leisureforastudyofEngland'srelationtothought;and,ifitwereobligedtopronounce,itwouldpointto Germanyasthegreatanti-Catholic sourceofmisbeliefandunbelief,not toEngland,where"speculatipn"means NewmarketortheStockExchange, andwherethe"Reformation"turned onHenryVIII'smatrimonialadventures.TheVaticanhasnoquarrelwith theBritishEmpire.Oneofhiscritics calledMr.Stutfieldan"Orangefanatic."Thewordtransfixeshimathis undoubtedpointofview.AtravellerinCanada,hehastakenupthe Orangeman'shatredofQuebecandof Ireland.NeitherQuebecnorIreland ispreciselythesameastheVatican. ButuponRomehefastensasacrime whateverthepatriotismoftheFrench CanadiansortheIrishCatholicsimpelsthemtodoindefenceoftheir rights.Canheneverallowthatthese populationsactwithaneyetotheir ownnationalbenefit?TheFrenchin CanadawanttospeakFrench;the CatholicsinIrelandwantHomeRule orindependence.Theydonotask leaveofanyRomanCongregationto prosecutetheseaims.AndsoQuebec andIrelandmustbestruckoutofthe indictment.

AFuriousAttackonthePope. ButinthewardidnotRomedesire victors'fortheCentralPowers,and evenhelpthem?Mr.StutfieldcontradictstheHolyFather,whoseneverceasingeffortsmadeforpeace.I havesaiditbefore,andIsayitagain, itismucheasiertodefendthePope's conductallthroughthoseYears,and hiscorrespondinglanguage.thanDr. Wilson'swordsandactsuntilhejoined theAllies.Thisaccusation,whichhas promptedtheauthortoburstintoinvectivesofunmeasuredrhetoric,is

us,onpage64,that"aCatholicfirst makesuphismindwhatheisgoingto believe,andthensetstoworktofind reasonsforhisbelief,"andyetis"a manwithadesiretobegoverned"? This"broad"Christianhasnodefinite standardbywhichwecanarguewith him.Hemakesacaricatureandcalls ittheRomanChurchHisbook,from firsttolast,proceeds

supportedonlybytheflimsiestof guesswork,withoutasingleinstance wheretheHolyFather'slapsefrom neutralityisbroughthometotheaccused.ThattheCentralPowerstook advantageofhisproposals,iftheydid, leavestheVaticanuntouched.BenedictXV.refusedtobeoneitherside; thereforehemustbecompromisedin theaffairofMgr.Gerlach,asifaware ofintriguescarriedonsecretly.But, Stutfieldhimself,"theCourt handsomelyexoneratedtheHolySee fromallcomplicityintheseplots." Neverthelesshedarestomaintain that"theVatican,withalargeand influentialpartyfollowing,wasnever reallyneutralinthegreatstruggle,but furtively,thoughactively,espoused thecauseofmilitaristautocracy." Whereistheproof?Nowhereinthese twohundredandfiftypages;buta sweepingtogetherofreportsandinferenceswhichcannotbesubjectedto cross-examinationismadetodoits office.Ihaveoneobservationtoset downwhichmaysurpriseMr.Stutfield.Ifallthathebringsforward tocondemnthepolicyoftheRoman officialsduringthewarcouldbesubstantiated,asitcertainlynevercanbe, theCatholicFaithwouldremainexactlywhatitis.Policyisnotamong thearticlesofourcreed.Hashenot heardthatdistinctioninthemany Catholicsermonstowhichhegaveear?

MaliceandIgnorance.

Asforthe"generalindictment,"of whichIspokeabove,itdiffersfrom theoldanti-Papallegendchieflyby someaddedstrokesofmaliceandignorance,veryamazingtocontemplate. WebornCatholicsknowthatRomeis nottheactive,sleeplessenemyofEngland:yetMr.Stutfieldthreatensto have,usdealtwithasaliensmoredangerousthantheGermans,ifwedonot changeourways.Hewould,Ipresume.restorethePenalCode.That surelyismalicefoundedonfalsehood. Ignorance,inmatterslargeandsmall, aboundsinhisvolume.Onasingle page(202)IfindhimquotingDisraeli's"alienChurch"inIrelandasif theCatholicChurchandnottheAnglicanweremeant;whilehebringsout themysticMolinos,condemnedandput inprisonbyPapalauthority,asone ofouraccreditedteachers.Onpage168 Mr.W.G.Ward,whodiedin1881,is representedasauthorofthe"Lifeof Newman,"whichappearedin1912and waswrittenbyhisson.Asingular instanceof"badform,"nottosay worse,attributestoPiusX.,onpage 140,"homicidaltendencies,"onthe groundthatheexhorted"hisassembledbishops"to"combaterroranddefendthetruth,eventothesheddingof blood."HadMr.Stutfieldopenedthe EpistletotheHebrews,chapterxii, verse4,hewouldhaveseenthatthe HolyFatherwasquotingScripture andencouragingtheBishopstomartyrdom,iftruthrequiredit;toshed theirownblood,notthatofanyModernist.Butwhatcanweexpectfrom awriterwhotalks,onpage30,'of thegreatworld-conflagrationtowhich CardinalManninglookedforwardwith suchgrimcomplacence";orwhotells

IhavenoticedthatthepressreportssentfromLondoninconnection withmyrecenttrialbyCourtMartial wereverybad.This,ofcourse,wasto beexpected.Assomelittleinterest hasbeentakeninmycaseinAustralia,Ithinkitpropertosendafew linesgivingtheparticularsoftheextraordinaryexperiencethatbefellme ontheIrishFront.Itwasnot,of course,myfirstvisittoIreland.There isnot,Ithink,anypersoninAustra liawhoknowssomuchofIrelandasI do,forwhenIwasastudentatAll Hallows,Dublin,Itravelledoverthe countrydoingoverfivethousandmiles onabicycleandvisitingeverypartof it.Iwasduetosailforhomelast November,andbeforesodoingIdecidedtopayalastvisittoIreland. Mytimewaslimited,sothatIhadto hastenfromplacetoplace.Butthough Iwasnotawareoftofactthegreat SecretServiceDepartmentoftheBritishArmyofOccupationhadreceived noticefromsomewhereortheother thatadangerousemissaryfrom AmericawastolandinIreland,and thathewastobedressedasapriestor acolonialofficer. Iwenttothe GreshamHotel,Dublin.Heretwo womenspieswerewatchingmeclosely, andothersfollowedmethroughthe city.Thesespiesalsohadtheireyes onanAmericanpriest,whowasvisitingthecity.HehadmetdeValera intheStates,andhadcalledonMrs. deValerainDublin;hiseverymovementwaswatchedbythespiesofthe Castle.Oneofthesewomengotinto conversationwithhim,andpretended tobeamostardentSinnFeiner.She saidhernamewasMrs.O'Connell,and thatshewaswellacquaintedwith anotherladywhowasafriendofthe Americanpriest.Butthissecondlady turnedupsuddenlyatthehotel,and thenitwasdiscoveredthatthesaid Mrs.O'Connelldidnotknowherat all,andshedisappearedasquicklyas possible. WhateverdocumentstheAmerican priesttookfromMrs.deValerahad tobecarefullyconcealedinhisclothing.Hemanagedtogetawaysafely. Ofcourse,hewasnotinanywayan emissary,butsimplyhometoseehis mother.Itappears,however,that myparticularstalliedwiththede scriptiongivenoftheemissary,and itwasatonceconcludedthatIwas theMANwanted.Thenanincident happened,whichtendedtoconfirmthis suspicion.BeforeleavingTasmaniaI becamepossessedofaninterestingrelicintheshapeofthepistolofthe famousJohnMitchell,whoescaped fromtherein1853.Hewasassistedin thisenterprisebytwobrothers,Burkes ofWestbury,oneofwhom.Mr.Dan Burke,stilllives,attheageof94years, atWestbury,wherehehasbeeriMayor fornearlyhalfacentury.Before MitchelllefthegavetotheBurkeshis pistol,whichcameintomypossession andwhichIsaidIwouldeithersend ortaketoDublintobeplacedinthe HallofLiberty,whichwouldbeestablishedtherewhenIrelandregainedher independence.ThereisaHallofLibertyofIndependenceinAmerica.and whynotoneinDublin,too.Asa matteroffacttherearewaitingforit quiteanumberofinterestingrelics. WhenIwenttoIrelandItookthe pistolwithme,butthequestionwasto whomwasItogiveit.Themost properpersonseemedtometobeMr. ArthurGriffith,theActingPresident ofSinnFeininIreland.SoIarrangedtodinewithhiminarestaurantin Henry-street.Therewerequitea numberofotherinterestingpeopleof thepartypresent.IhandedthepistoltoMr.Griffith,inwhichheandthe otherswere,ofcourse,quiteinterested. Heputitinhispocket,andundertooktolookafterituntilsuchdayas itmightbeplacedintheHallofLibertyintheParliamentHouseatDublin.ButthespiesoftheIntelligence Departmentwerehere,too,andbefore manyminutesthistransactionhad beenreportedtotheCastle,andwe maybesurecausednolittlesensation.Thissuspectedpersonwaseven deliveringarmstotheheadoftheSinn FeinmovementinIreland.There surelycouldnolongerbeanydoubt abouthim.IamsurethatJohnMitchellneveranticipatedthathisinnocentlittleweapon,anoldblunderbuss ofnopracticaluse,wouldcauseso muchtroubleonitsreappearancein Ireland. Ileftnextmorningonmytour throughthecountry.Butthespies wereonmytrack,andeverymovementwascloselywatched.Through

Mullingar,whereIstayed,andMoate, andontoLoughreainGalway.On arrivalinthelastnamedtownItook amotorcarandspedoffintothe countrytoseeafriend.Buthow suspiciousintheeyesoftheSecret Service!NextdayIhadtohirethe caragaintogotoBirr,becausethere isnorailway.Thespiesfollowedin anothercar.AtBirrtheywereseen inthetown,andwaitingoutsidethe houseofthefriendIwenttoseelate atnight.

Onthesecondday,attheInternationalHotel,Iwentintothedining roomanhourandaquarterafterthe usualdinnerhour.Therewasno personthenthere.Butsoonaman enteredandbegantoconversewith me.Hesatatanothertable,but sayinghewasdeafhecameoverto mytable.Ididnotknowhim.Soon afteranEnglishofficer,asecondlieutenant,cameinwithacivilian,andsat abouttwenty-fivefeetaway.Then thereenteredanothermanandhis wife.Iwastalkingloudly,because myfriendwasdeaf,andIwascriticisingLloydGeorgeandtheEnglishgenerally,andIcouldseethattheothers werelistening,soIputalittleginger intoit.ButitwasnotaboutIreland,butaboutEngland,thewar,and Australia'spartinit.Theofficer cameupandaskedmenottotalkso loud,asitinterferedwithhisconversation,andyetafterhetoldtheCourt hewasengagedinwritinginabook whatIwassaying.Thatwasonlya dodgesothathemightbeableafterwardstosaythathecameandspoke

tome.Ofcourse,Iwouldnotbe sofoolishastosayanythingunder thosecircumstancesthatcouldbeobjectedto,andIdidnotsayanything. Themanwiththeofficerwasoneof these,andhecameforwardwhenit wasfoundabsolutelynecessary,and supportedtheotherliarwithacoolnessthatwoulddisgracetheworst Prussianliarthateverlived.Iwent onnextdaytoCork,whereIsawmorb strangepersonswatchingmeandtryingtoengagemeinconversation. Thenonto1Mitchelstown,Fermoy, andWaterfordandKilkenny.Littledid Idreamthenthatthewireswere hummingonmyaccountandthata closewatchwasbeingkeptonthe boatsatWaterfordandKingstown. NextdayIarrivedinDublin,and wenttotheGreshamHotel,andwithinashorttimetwomilitarypolicemen toldmethattheA.P.M.wantedtosee meattheCastle.Iwent,andthat sourcreature,agoodsampleofhis breed,rankandcalling,inquiredas tomyrecentvisittoKillarney.He thensaidthatitwasreportedthatI hadusedveryseditiouslanguagein anhotelthere.Ideniedthecharge. IwasbeginningtothinkthatIwas regardedasadesperatecriminal,and soitwas.Theyhadatlastcaught thewildrevolutionaryleaderthathad cometosetthecountryonfire.As IexpectedtheA.P.M.sentawireto Londongivingallparticularsabout me,andaskingforinformation.But insteadofsendingittotheAustralian Headquarters,itwassenttotheCanadianHeadquarters.Greatbrainsin thisSecretServiceoftheArmyofOccupationinIreland!Ofcourse,the replycamebackthatIwasnever heardofbytheCanadianArmy,and thenalltheirworstorbestfearswere confirmed.Itwasagreatcapture, andofficersandA.P.M.sawvisionsof quickpromotionandmanydecorations.Whatabag!Thebigrebel fromAmerica! 1wasremovednext daytoasaferlocation,wherethere weremanymoresoldierstoguardme; infact,awholeregimentoftheKing's Own.HereagainIwasplacedunder lockandkeywithfixedbayonetsoutsidetoguardthepreciousprisoner.I managedtogetafriendtoseeme, andalsoapriest,butanofficerinsistedinremaininginthecell,sothatI wasnotabletogotoConfessionasI desired.For,whenonefindshimself inprisoninIreland,heoughttopreparefortheworst,forhemustre- memberthatColthurst,themurderer ofEasterWeek,isstillliving.Though hewasfoundguiltyofmurderandadjudgedinsaneinDublin,heisonce morebackintheArmyinfullbloom, andmightturnupatanymoment withevildesignsinhishead,andhis brain-boxoncemoreconvenientlyderangedforthetime.Andtherewere plentyofwallsandmanygunsfor shooting.

Yesterday,allIrelandwasinthe throesofanelection.Municipalelectionstookplacethroughouttheland, thefirstsincetheoutbreakofwar.In additiontheydifferedfromprevious elections,sinceeverymemberofevery bodywasforcedtothecountry,instead ofgoinghalfatatimeasformerly;and theywereheldundertheProportional Representationsystem.Asaresult, LloydGeorgeandhisganghavegot anothersmackintheface,forthepeopleofIrelandhaveonceagainemphaticallydemandedaRepublic,andcompleteseparationfromEngland.Proportionalrepresentation,whichwasshovedontoIrelandtodealadeadlyblow atSinnFein,hasbittenitssponsor's hand,fortheonlypartyithaslamed istheOrangeParty.SinnFeinwill dominatetheDublinCorporationand mostofthebigtowns,and,inalliance withLabour.willdominatepractically everycouncilinIreland,exceptBelfastandafewintheNorth.

Ofcourse,thisisthefirstexperiment withproportionalrepresentationinthis partoftheglobe.England,inthat frolicsomewayshehasinIrishaffairs. "trieditonthedog"toseehowit wouldact.TheCommonspassedthe ActlastJuly,andalthoughtherewas anexcellentchanceoftryingitonin Englandatthemunicipalelectionsin thatcountry,threemonthsago,itwas nothavingany.HadLloydGeorge foreseenthatEnlgishLabourwasto sweepthepolls,asitdid,probablyhe wouldhaveappliedittoEngland.However,Irelandwastohaveit,andyou canseehowkindlydisposedtheEnglishCabinetistoIreland,whenitdeclinedtospendabrassfarthinginexplainingtotheIrishpeopletheintricaciesofproportionalrepresentation. "No,"saidthewisemenfromWestminster,"iftheproportionalrepresentation stuntdoesnotsmashtheSinnFein vote,atanyrate'theignorantIrish' willmakesuchamessofitthattheresultswillbeallwithus."But,loand behold!alreadyitisknownthatless than2percent.ofvoteswerespoiledby "theignorantIrish"!

ThisisfromtheManchesterGuardian ofJanuary12,1920: "DublinCastlesuddenlydiscovered P.R.asameanswherebyaSinnFein majoritywouldbepreventedfrombecomingaSinnFeinmonopoly-and DublinCastledecidedtoscraptheentiresystemoflocalgoverningbodiesin favourofacompleteschemeofP.R."

Otherpapersdidnotputitsomildlyasthis,buttheabovewillservethe purpose.However,theEnglishGovernmentcouldnotbelievethatP.R., ofitself,wassufficienttoslaytheSinn Feindragon,soitsettoworktomake matterssure.Alltheelectorateswere gerrymandered,andnewconstituenciessetupbytheLocalGovernment Board,whichisnominatedbyDublin Castle,andisundernopopularcontrol. IfyouhaveseenanyIrishpapersfor November,youwillhavereadagain andagainofproceedingsagainstofficialsforstrikingNationalistvotersoff therolls.TheseofficialsintheNorth wereactiveOrangemen,andsometimes theywerethelocalUnionistpolitical agents.

"Naturallysonablemenlookedto theGovernmt,whohadlaidthe foundationofasocialrevolution,tosee thejobthrough.DublinCastlethought otherwise,andlefttheindigestiblemass oflegislationtotakecareoftself.Incredibleasitmayseem,notasingle pennycouldbeobtainedforthepurposeofexplainingthesystemtothe voters,andtheamountofpublicmoney obtainedfortrainingofficialsisamere fractionofthecostinwhichasingle cityisinvolvedbytheelection."

Onthewhole,thevotingwasquiet. Afewmeetingswereheldpriortothe elections,anditwasamusingtoread thereportsinthepapersthenextday totheeffectthat"CountessMarkievicz,M.P.,whoexplainedthatshewas 'ontherun,'spokeinsupportofthe candidates";orofsomeofthemany otherM's.P."ontherun."SinnFein flagsweremuchinevidence,andoutsidesomeoftheboothsgirlsdressed ingreen,whiteandyellowdressesmarshalledthecrowds.IntheNorth Dock,600shipyardworkers,carrying severalSinnFeinflagsandheadedby aPipers'Band,marchedtothepolling boothat6p.m.Otherdockersatthe

greatapplause,JosephHunt,agedfive years,votedinNo.10Area,Dublin; andagirl,agednineyears,votedin Drumcondra!BothvotedSinnFein, Ineednotadd.Youknow,afterall thetalkweget,onewouldthinkthat only"ignorantIrishpeople"could passalawthatallowschildrenoffive andninetovote,andnotthe"intelligentEnglish."Itwasquiteacommonsighttoseepeoplecarriedinon stretcherstorecordtheirvote.In Derryanelderlylady,whowasboth blindandparalysed,wascarriedinto theboothinabathchairbyfourmen. Theonlyarrestfordoublevotingwas atDerry,andthevoterwasaUnionist! KatherineMcNulty,acentenarian,registeredhervoteforaNationalistat Derry,andthemanwhovotedimmediatelybeforeherwasdeafanddumb! AllRepublicans.

SomeEnglishpapersaretryingto findcomfortinthefactthatLabour candidatestookthefieldagainstSinn Feincandidates.Their"fact"is "fiction,"butneverthelessitisacertaintythatAustraliawillbetoldthat SinnFeingotasetback,andthat Labourhelpedtogiveit.Therealfact isthatLabourdidnotstandagainst SinnFein.Itfoughtsidebysidewith SinnFein.LabourstoodforaRepublic,everybitasmuchasdidSinnFein.

AllSinnFeinM'sP.Elected. EverySinnFeinM.P.whostoodas acandidatethroughoutthecountry waselected.SevenofthemwereelectedtotheDublinCorporation.Ofthese, twoareingaol,andoneSeanT. O'Kelly,isstillinParisworryingthe SupremeCouncilandtheLeagueof Nationspeople.AldermanTomKelly, M.P.,stillinWormwoodScrubbsPrison,securedahugevote,ofcourse,and hasalreadybeenelectedasthenew LordMayorofDublin.TheEnglish GovernmentsentencesIrishmentotwo years'gaolforsinging: "Afelon'scop'sthenoblestcrown, AnIrishmancanwear;" butalltheEnglishGovernments,and theirsoldiersandtheirpolice,have neverbeenabletopreventtheIrish peopletranslatingthesentimentinto action.

IRELANDTO-DAY-NOTBELGIUMYESTERDAY.

Oneofthemotorlorriesofsoldiersandpolicemovingoffafterafruitless raidontheNewIrelandAssuranceSociety,Bachelors'Walk,Dublin, January8th.last.ThreeraidsweremadeontheSociety,thecellar wasdugup.Nothingdoing.Mr.MichaelStaines,SinnFeinM.P., chairmanoftheSociety,statedthattherewasnodoubtthattheraids wereduetothebigbusinesstneSocietywastakingfromtheEnglish companies.Nextday,JamesHoey,SuperintendentoftheSociety,and municipalcandidateforBray,wasarrestedwithoutcharge,anddeported toEngland,andlodgedinWormwoodScrubbsPrison.

Who,then,taughtthese"ignorant Irishmen"howtousethisintricatemachine?"SinnFein,"saystheDaily Mail,andinitssurprisewefinditexclaiming(January6,1920)

"ThatSinnFein,insteadofopposing achangedeclaredlydesignedtocripple itspowershouldwillinglyhelpinits developmentismorethanremarkable."

Morethanremarkable!Notabitof it.Whentwooutofeverythreepeopleknowexactlywhattheywant,and

NorthWalltookanextrahouroffat lunchtimetovote.Owingtothemultiplicityofcandidates,andthetime takentoregistereachvote,thousands ofpeoplecouldnotvote.Between5 and8p.m.atalltheboothsvoters wereformedupinqueues,andina numberofcasesthoseattheendofthe queues,afterwaitingthusforseveral hours,foundthedoorslammedintheir facesat8p.m.,andsocouldnotvote! Withalthevotersaresetdownat65 percent.,whichformunicipalelections isarecord,surely.

BeforeanotherissueoftheRECORDcomesintothehandsofour readers,wewillhavecelebratedtheFeastDayofIreland'sPatronSaint, andwehope,givensubstantialevidenceofourfidelitytothatoldland whichthroughstormandshine,intribulationsinnumerableandoft-timesin theshadowofdeath,heldcloselytothattreasureofFaithgiventoherby St.Patrickintheverygreylong,longago.IncommonwiththeGaelsof theCommonwealth,"fromtorridNorthtofrozenSouth,"the17th.ofthis monthwillbemadeadistinctlyspecialdaybytheIrishandCatholiccitizensofthisState.Everytownandhamletthatcanclaimaquotaofthe raceofKelly,Burke,andSheawillpayhonourtoSt.Patrick-thepoorslaveherdsmanwhowasraisedupbyGodtotransformpaganIrelandandbringher intothecircleofChristendom,andeveryloveroftheOldLandwillsporthis "bito'green.-emblemoftheLittleGreenIsleoftheWest."Itwillbe"the Day"foralloftheclassIrishwhohaveinthemthespiritofFaithand Fatherland,andwhotreasurethememoryoftheoldscenesandplacesof theiryouth.

"Ofallnationalsaints,"saysStephenGwynne,"thereisnone.Ithink, whoretainssovividanexistenceinmemoryasthepatronSaintofIreland -nonewhosenamecarrieswithitsomuchofreality,ormeanssomuchto hisownpeople. St.Patrick,morethananyotherfigure,standsforwhat iscommonbetweenIrishmanandIrishmanbeyondpartyandcreed.More thanNialloftheNineHostages,moreeventhanBrianoftheTribute,he isthecommonfatherofusall,althoughaforeignerandaRoman."

FromtheveryearlypioneerclaysoftheIrishinAustraliatherehave beensuchforegatherings-thecelebrationofSt.Patrick'sDayhasgrown intoatime-honouredcustomwithourIrishcitizens,andhasbeenrecognised asamongtheannualfestivalsofthepeople.Butbigotryandintolerance camealong,andtheselfishnessofanarrow,noisysectarianismobtrudeditself, and,jealousofthegrowinginfluenceofIrishcitizenship,anattempthasbeen madetolimititslibertiesandtorestrictitsrights.InallourStatesthis ignobleclique.withasuavehypocrisy,whilstprotestingtheirvirtues,have endeavouredtotakeawaythegoodnameandfameofIrishandCatholic citizens,andhavemadedesperateeffortstoputaninterdictupontheSt. Patrick'sDayprocessionandanembargoonIrishsentiment.Itisgood tothinkthatdemocraticAustraliancitizenshipmeasuredtheirhypocrisy withajustmeasure,andthatthesemiserablymeaneffortshavefailedin theirobjective.ThespiritoftheGael,whichhashelpedthemthrotsghstorm andperil,throughslanderandbitterantagonism,topreservetheirindividualitythroughthecenturies,haswithstoodtheinsolenttemerityoftheunreasoningmalcontentswhowould,iftheycould,stopthesunfromshining uponanyonebutthemselves.ForthesakeofAustralianchivalry,werejoicethattheyhavebeenconfounded.Topandertothemwouldhavebeen tostartanuglyfeudthatwouldhavebeenbitterandprolonged.Last year'sincidentwillnotberepeated-norestrictionshavebeenplacedupon theSt.Patrick'sDaycelebrationsinthisState-andwecanspeakforour peopleandsaytheywilldonothingunreasonablewhichwouldantagonisethe goodopinionoftheirfellowcitizens.Wepreferthatthatbitternessoccasionedbylastyear'sunfortunateinterferenceshouldbeforgotten,andwe trustthateveryloverofIreland,andeverysympathiserwiththecauseof justicetoIreland,willgivepracticalmanifestation,ofthatloveandsympathybyjoiningintheprocessiononWednesdaynext.WehopenoIrishmanwillbesopoorspiritedandsomeanastobeakerb-barnacleonthe 17th.HisplaceisintheprocessionwiththeyoungIrish-Australiansandwith hiscountrymen-ifheclaimscomradeshipwiththeminIreland'scause.If heisnottheircomrade,thenlethimbeakerb-barnacleandmeditateon thechangethathastakenplaceinthetheIrishspiritsinceitwaswritten:

"Whatwonderthatourstepbetrays.

Thefreedmanborninpenaldays."

EveryIrishandCatholicSocietyshouldbestronglyrepresented,andevery effortshouldbemadetomakethecelebrationthisyearapositiveevidenceof theunityandstrengthoftheGaelintheWest.

Thereisneedforsuchevidence.IthasbeensaidthatIrishAustralians donotapproveofthepolicyoftheIrishathome.Letus,onourpart, givethelietothatassertion-letussaybyournumbersthatwedo:that heartandsoulwearewithourpeopleintheoldhomelandintheirstruggle againstalienrule,andthatwebelievethattheprinciplesforwhichourAustralianmanhoodwentouttofightanddieforinFrance,Belgium,Gallipoli, andEgypt-therightofsmallnationstodeterminetheirownsystemofGovernment-shouldbeappliedtotheIrishnation,olderincivilisationandin historythanmanythathavebeenemancipatedbythewar.Theheavy handoftheoppressorpressesheavilyonIrelandto-day.Withanalmost fiendishbrutality,militarismisstrivingwithallthewaysoftheHunsand theJunkerstobreakthespiritofresistancetoaGovernmentwhichrobsher peoplebyunjusttaxationandimpedesindustrialprogress.Constitutionalismhasbeenrevoked,thesoldiersitsintheplaceofthejudge.Outrage. murder,andpillagefollowsthetrailofthebrasshatinIreland,andevery honestprinciplewhichtheEnglishnameissupposedtoconnoteisswept asidebymartiallaw.SuchistheconditionofBritishGovernmentinIrelandthatfair-mindedEnglishmenlikeCaptainVVedgewoodBenn.foundit necessaryintheinterestsofconstitutionalgovernmenttomovetherejec. LionoftheEmergencyLawsConstitutionBill.andtocondemntheprocessesofmilitaryruleinIreland.MenlikeAsquithandLordCecil,differinginpolitics,butessentiallypatrioticEnglishmen,areagreedintheircondemnationofthetruculentmethodsofDublinCastleGovernment,andhave declaredinfavourofafullmeasureofself-governmentfortheIrishnation. TheBritishLabourPartysupportstheIrishclaimtoanativeParliament, withfullpowersforgovernmentofthepeopleaccordingtotheirideals.There seems,however,littlehopeofIrelandreceivingagenerousmeasureofreformfromtheCoalitionGovernment,judgingfromtheHouseofCommons divisionsonquestionsaffectingtheGovernment'spolicyinIreland.There aretoomanyconflictingandopposingfactorsintheLloydGeorgeretinueto beappeased.ThelatesteffortoftheGovernmentatconciliationisasure indexoftheinabilityofthepresentadministrationtoproduceameasureof reformthatwillbeacceptabletotheIrishpeople.Theonestrongfeature ofthestruggleforIrishself-government,forafterallbywhatevernamewe maydistinguishthisstruggle,frompreviousstruggles,self-governmentiswhat Irelandwants,whatsheisunitedlystrivingfor,andwhatshemusteventuallygetiftheoldquarrelbetweenIrelandandEnglandistobesettled andthetwopeoplesaretobefriends,isthedeterminationoftheyounggenerationofIrelandtobefreedfromthethraldomofDublinCastle.There washopethatthisquarrelwasonthepointofbeingsettled.ButthelatesthappeningsinIrelandandintheHouse ofCommonsarenotreassuring,andthereseemstobearegrettable prospectofaprolongedstrugglebeforeDublinCastleanditsgarrisonbitesthe dustofdefeat.Meanwhile,theRepublicwillcontinuetofunction,andits growingstrengthisshowninthefactthatithascapturedalargenumberof

thelocalgoverningbodies,andthatinthelargecitiesmunicipalgovernmentis inthehandsoftheRepublicans,andthattheRepublicanTreasuryisnot shortofcash.Generally,notwithstandingthemanytroublesundermartiallaw,thespiritofIrelandishopeful,resoluteandstrong.IndustrialIreland isprogressive--thepeoplearenotfamine-stricken,andtheoldbaddayshave passedwhenKeegansobbed:

"There'snothingbutragsandgreenrushesforme."

Thepolicyofhernewleadersisworkingwell.PassiveresistanceisstrongerthanthepoweroftheHunsandtheJunkers,andtheworldknowsthat thechargesofmurderandoutragelaidagainsttheIrishRepublicarethefabricationsofasetwhosepurposeistolieandslanderintheinterestsofDublinCastle.

Aboutthe25th.ofApril,HisExcellency,theApostolicDelegate,Dr.Cattaneo,willvisitthisState.TheApostolicDelegatecomesastherepresentativeoftheGreatestRuleronthis earth,HisHolinessthePope,andhis missionispurelyanecclesiasticalone. Thisisamissionarycountry,initsinfancy,andhencethepresenceofaresponsiblerepresentativeoftheHolySee isafeatureverynecessaryandvery usefultoserveasalinkbetweenus andthegreatcentreofourreligious organisation-theCityoftheSeven Hills.

AnApostolicDelegate is the officialAmbassadoroftheVicar ofChrist.Thedynastyherepresentsstretchesbackacrossthe yearstoSt.Peter.Itrepresentsalso everythingthatisnobleandgreatand grandinourcivilisedworld;forthe highestcivilisationhasitsfountofinspirationintheHolyCity,andabove allinthephasesoftheFaithtowhich, throughtheages,thatCityhasbeena livingwitness.Inaword,theApostolicDelegaterepresentsthegreatest spiritualorganisationtheworldhas everseen,andwilleversee.Thesun neversetsontheempireoftheChurch. Peoplesofallracesandcolourin everycorneroftheworldbowallegiancetothePapacy.

Andwhenweconsiderthatthisgreat Stateisonlyinitsinfancy,afeeling ofhonourableandjustprideshouldbe ouremotiononthearrivaloftheApostolicDelegate,seeingthemarvellous strideswhichtheChurchhasmade here,everaheadevenoftheadvancementofthesecularState.

Intheolddaysthepioneersofthe Churchhavebravedgreattrialsintheir battletokeeptheFaithburninginthe heartsofscatteredflocks.Schoolsand orphanages,andhospitals,andhomes forthedistressed,andthehelpless, cameinGod'sgoodtime,andweare sureitwillbeasourceofgreatjoyand consolationtoHisExcellency,asit certainlyistous,toseeeveryhillcrestedwithaCatholicChurch,orCatholic institution,andthespiritualorganisationoftheArchdioceseworkingwith allthesmoothnessandsweetnessofa perfectlydevisedmachine.OurCatholicschoolsaretheprideofthe State.Thepatronageaccordedtothem bythoseoutsidetheFaithisarich tributetotheirpre-eminence.Our HospitalofSt.JohnofGod,vigorous initsworkforthesickandthedying, isstillstretchingoutitstentstowiden itsfieldofusefulness.Thatgrand conventualpile,theHomeoftheGood Shepherd,Leederville,istangibleevidencethattheChurchintheWestis notunmindfulofthosewhohavebeen bruisedandbrokenbytheroughness ofthecruelworld.St.Vincent's FoundlingHomeisstillanotherproof ofthesolicitudeofourArchbishopfor thewelfareoftheweaklingsoftheFold. Andyet,wearegoingastepfurther, andsoonagenerousfaithfulwillcooperatewiththedesiresoftheArchbishoptoraiseupaHomewhere,under thegentlecareoftheLittleSistersof thePoor,theroaddowntheshort abruptdeclineoflifemaybeassuaged. Wewelcome,then,HisExcellency, Dr.Cattaneo,toalandwithagreat future,alandwheretheFaithisfresh, warm,andaboveallvigorous.North, South,EastandWestareevidencesof lifeandprogress.OutinthebackblocksoftheNor'-West,inDr.Kelly's scattereddiocese,theCatholicschools andtheCatholicpriestaredoingheroic work;awayinthefarNorth,inFather Creagh'sVicariate,andfurtherNorth, ontheBenedictineMission,glorious workisbeingdonefortheaborigines. NewNorciaisanamewhichtellsthat theSpanishmonkshavenotforgotten tobringwiththemtheglorioustraditionsoftheirnativeland,fortheir monasticzeal,theirart.theirenterpriseintheinterestsofCatholiceducation,arearevelation.

WHATISANOPTIMIST?

AwellattendedmeetingoftheSt. Patrick'sDayCelebrationsCommittee washeldattheParochialHall,Archbishop'sPalace,onMondayevening last.Arrangementsinconnection withthefunctionarenowalmostcomplete,anditrestswiththevarioussocietiestakingpart,andthegeneral public,togivethefullstrengthoftheir co-operationtothesportsandprocession.Thatbeingdone,thecelebrationsthisyearwilleclipseallprevious effortsinmaintainingIrishidealsand givingventtoIrishsentiment.ThroughouttheStatepreparationsarenow practicallyfinalisedtocommemorate theFeastofSt.Patrickinaworthy manner.Atthelargecentresofpopulation,particularlyontheGoldfields, celebrationsaretobecarriedoutona grandscale.Processionsandsportson thedayitselfarethegeneralrule,and wherepossibleanationalconcerton thesameevening.

Inthecity,however,theconcert takesplaceonthefollowing(Thursdayl night,March18th.AtFremantle,althoughthePortwillhavejoinedin withPerthcelebrations,aconcertisto takeplaceatKing'sTheatreonSt. Patrick'snight.Thepupilsfromthe ChristianBrothers'HighSchool,assistedbyprominentartists,willgivea grandIrishentertainment.Theattentionofreadersisdirectedtoanannouncementonpage10ofthisissue concerningFremantle'sactivityinorganisingthisconcert,andafullhouse isconfidentlyexpected

Asregardstheentertainmenttobe giveninPerth,wehavenodoubtthat itwillnotonlybeupto,butsurpass, thecommittee'sexpectations.Children'sitemsofaperformancearealwayseagerlysoughtafter.Forthis occasiontheConventschargedwith providingmuchoftheprogrammehave workedzealouslytomaketheirrespectivechildren'sitemsattractiveand characteristicallyIrish.Alltheother artistsengagedarewellknowntoSt. Patrick'snightaudiencesinPerth.The arrangementsarenotyetdefinitely complete,otherwisewecouldpublish thedetailedprogramme.Butitwill beanIrishNationalConcert,andHis Majesty'sTheatrewillweknowbefilledtooverflowing.Thereisnobookingseatsbeforehand,sopatronsare warnedastowhattodotoavoiddisappointment.

Itisworthyofnotethatonthisoccasion,moreso,perhaps,thanonany previousoccasion,asplendidspiritof unanimityprevailsinthemetropolitan area-fromMidlandJunctiontoFremantle-allparishesthrowingtheft unitedeffortintothedemonstration, andtherecan,therefore,benodoubt butthatthewholeday'soutingwillbe asourceofhappinessandgratification forthemanythousandswhowillmarch andcrowdthesportsgrounds.

Sothe"mystery"attachedtosome recentshootingsinIrelandhasbeen solved.The"execution"oftheman founddeadinafield,riddledbybullets"whilsthewaskneelinginprayer" hasbeenaccountedforbythecircumstanceswhichhavebeenbroughtto lightinconnectionwiththefindingof theriddledbodyoftheyoungman Devitt.Theseoutrageshavebeen chargedupagainstSinnFein,butin realitytheyaretheproductsofmilitarisminIreland-theworkoftheirresponsiblesofmilitarylaw.Thepress ofIrelandismuzzled-publicopinionis gagged--andallevidenceofthesehorrorsissuppressed.ThetruthismartiallawinIrelandisnothingbutmurder,violence,androbbery-withrepudiationoftherightsofcitizenshipand alltheelementsofChristianityadded. LieasmuchasDublinCastlewill,it cannotcloaktheviciousnessofitsmalfeasantrule.Itstinksinthenostrils ofallhumanepeople;itparallelsthe brutalityoftheworstdaysofLenin andTrotskyinsolenceinRussia.Let usnotbetoohardontheBolsheviks whilstChurchill'sjanissariesareloose inIreland.

TheMitchellGovernmenthasthe distinctionofrepresentingaStateup toitsneckindebt,andwithconsum edlylittletoshowforit.Duringthe briefandharassedreignoftheScaddanLabourGovernmenteverylittle whimperingopponentvoicedhisspleen inthelocaldailies,andScaddanwas "goneamillion."Scaddanandhis StateSocialismwaspulledbythe wool,viciouslyscratched,andgenerouslydamnedbyourWesternLiberals. Scaddan'sGovernmentwentdownundertheweightofpopularwhiningand criticism,buttherehasbeenalotof burntmoneybythesuccessorsofScaddan-hisStateSocialismhasbeen supersededbyaNationalistGovernment,whichwastobeapanaceafor everyevilexceptabaldhead,andyet thedeficitisbeingaddedto,andour NationalistGovernmentseemstobe helplesstomendthewasteandextravaganceandincompetenceofadministration.Wearerushingontobankruptcy,andthefutureseemsovercast withmanytroubles.Ouradministratorsseemtobelosingtheirgripof responsibility,andareseeminglylike deadfishfloatingdownthestream. FromWyndhamthisweekcomesa protestthatmighteasilybeoverlookedbyreadersoftheWest,butitindicatestheincompetenceofourStats Governmenttodealwiththefoodproblem:-"Therehasbeennosteamer heresincetheendofDecember,and noneappearslikelytobeherebefore themiddleofApril.Thisisevenworse thaninwartime,andthepopulationis nowmuchlargerandrequirements greater.Forsometimealotofthe

Thestrikeofmarineengineers,which wasbeginningtocrippleindustry,endedlastweek,andthisweeksomedozensofvesselswereabletotakeup againtheirpartinourcommerciallife. Onthewhole,publicopinionwaswith theengineers,especiallywhenthe Hughes'Governmentusedthepowers oftheWarPrecautionsActagainst them. Buttwomorestrikeshavetakenthe placeofthisonethathasconcluded. Theprintershaveallstruckforaminimumwageof£5foraweekof40or44 hours:thisappliestoallprintingestablishmentsexceptthosewhichproduce dailynewspapers,orweeklynewspaperscontrolledbydailynewspaper proprietaries.Soaltogethernewspapers arehavingaroughtime.Theprice ofpaperhasrisen800percent.since 1913,andisstillrising;forsomeweeks 1 untillastweek,theuseofelectricpowerwasforbiddenonaccountofthecoal shortagecausedbytheshippingstrike: andnow,theprintershavestruckfor bigadvances.Manynewspaperswill simplynotbeabletoappearthisweek, andIamtoldthattheAdvocatewill appearwith.sixteenpages,insteadof 44.Thesecondstrikenowproceeding isthatofthedriversofelectrictrams. Theyaredemandingaseven-notch brakeinplaceofafour-notchbrake, andsincethisisnotgrantedtheyare adoptingwhattheycalla"regulation" strike.Thatis,theyareadhering strictlytotheirregulationsregarding speedinpassingcrossingsandinroundingcurves,andtheynownegotiate theseataboutthreemilesperhour.The resultofthisisthattheyarebehind time,andafitpedestrianisnowaple totravelfasterthanthetrams.However,thisstrikeisnotsucceedingtoo well,andageneralstoppageofthe tramserviceisexpected.

IrepeatwhatIhavesaidinthisletterseveraltimesbefore:Icannotattempttoarbitratebetweentheparties totheseindustrialdisputes. Ido, however,deplorethefactthatthere seemsnoattempttorecogniseprinciples ofcommoninterestinthediscussionof them.Peopleareexpectedtoally themselvesblindlywithonesideorthe other,butinmyopinionnosettlement eitherequitableordurablecanbeexpectedalongsuchlines.HisGracethe Archbishophasrecentlytouchedupon thesituationinthesewords:"Weare notasbadlyoffasthoseontheother sideoftheworld,butwehaveverylittletobeproudof.Atpresentthereis greatdealofunrestinAustralia. Thereisstillmuchgrindingofthefaces ofthepoor.Letushopethat,before ourtravellingprelatescomeback,Australiawillhaverecoveredherself.(Applause.)Letusalsohopethatthere willbeabetterunderstandingand moregoodwillbetweenthedifferent classesofsociety.(Applause.)

InoticeeveryweekinTHERECORDtheslogan,"JoinaCatholicSociety."Itisexcellentadvice,excellentfrombothaspiritualandapurely materialpointofview.Muchactivity islatelybeingshownbyseveralCatholicorganisationsinVictoria.

Followingitssuccessfully-conducted Summer-school,theAustralianCatholic Federationheldatwo-daysconference lastweek.Atallannualconferences ofallsocieties,agooddealofgrand_ soundingtalkisindulgedin,butthe A.C.F.hasagreateramountofactivity foritsquotaoftalkthananysocietyI know.Proposalsofdecentralisation wereadoptedwherebydiocesancouncils willbeestablishedinBallarat,Bendigo, andSale,andrepresentativesfrom thesecouncilswillbegivenseatsonthe StateCouncil.Theinconvenienceof thisarrangementisthatcountrymembersoftheStateCouncilwillnotbe abletoattendmeetingsfortnightly, andbusinessmaybecomesomewhat disorganised.Butthisdifficultyis faroutweighedbytheunfairnessofall seatsontheStateCouncilnecessarily beingheldbyMelbournepeople,and anothersystemisatanyratewurtha trial.Anotherprogressivestepwas takenwhenitwasdecidedtofacilitate thediscussionof"nationalquestions" atbranchmeetings.Arrangements wouldbemadeforsuitablespeakers andwriterstointroducethesesubjects, andmemberswouldbeputintheway ofstudyingthemforthemselves.The incomingStateCouncilistomakearrangementsforthesenewactivities, andalsofortheholdingofaninterStateConference.Duringtheholdingofthisconferenceatelegramconveyingfelicitationsandgoodwishes wasreceivedfromMessrs.P.andA. Bryan,proprietorsofTHERECORD.

TheIrishNationalForesters'BenefitSocietyalsometinconferenceyesterday.Likeotherbenefitsocieties, ithassufferedseverelythroughthe disputewiththeBritishMedicalAssociation.Lastyear'sworkshowsa smallloss,butthepositiongenerally givesnocauseforalarm.

AmeetingofthepresidentsandsecretariesoftheCatholicYoungMen's Societyhasbeenheld,toconsider tighteninguptheenthusiasmofthe variousbranches.Sucha"Wake-Up" campaignisrequiredeverynowann thenbyoursocieties.On"showoccasions"-say,foracombinedCommunionbreakfast-thememberscomeforwardinfinestyle,butordinaryroutine meetingsareneglected.Aconference ofleadersisrequiredfromtimeto timetoconsiderthecausesofslackeninginterest,andtoconsideralsowhat planswillleadtomoregeneralsuccess.

NewOrganisationProposed.

Thedifficultiesconnectedwithmanagingasocietymaywelldeterusfrom settingupanymoreinadditionto thosethatatpresentexist.Buta needhasbeenpointedoutbyMr.J.H. Rasmussen,inthecolumnsofour Press,andheshowstheurgencywith whichthatneedsshouldbemet.The need,hesays,concernsboyswhohave justleftschool.Theyarefreedfrom schoolcontrolforalargeandincreasingpartoftheday,theyareoutside parentalcontrol;theyareattackedby temptation,andtheyhavenothingto savethemfromit.Iftheyremaindecent,theyareyetexposedtotherisk oflearningirreligion.TheCatholic YoungMen'sSocietycatersforthem atanolderstage,buttillthattime thereisnoorganisationthatcansave them.Juvenileclubs,then,areadvocated;theyhavesucceededinother countries,andthereisnoreasonwny

theyshouldnotbemadetosucceed here.

Itisinterestingtonotethatthe ConferenceoftheSt.VincentdePaul's SocietyatNewmanCollegeintendsto establishaclubforcitynewsboysas soonaspossible.

GifttoXavierCollege.

Manymansionsbuiltthirtyormore yearsagoarebeingfoundunsuitable formodernresidentialpurposes,and arebeingputonthemarket.Oneof these,"StudleyHall,"onlythreemiles fromMelbourne,waspurchasedsome timeagobytheVictorianGovernment, butfoundunsuitableforitspurposeas ahospital.IthasnowbeenpurchasedfromtheGovernmentbyMr.T.M. Burke,forthesumof£5,600,andhas been'byhimpresentedtoXavierCollege.TheJesuitFatherswerecontemplatingthebuildingofapreparatory schoolinthecollegegrounds,butthis giftwillrelievethemfromcarrying outthatplan.Withafewalterations, "StudleyHall"willbeabletobeused asapreparatoryschoolinacoupleof months'time,andwillbeabletoaccomodateabout100boys.

SyrianPriest'sDeath.

Ihavetorecordthedeathofanother priestinMelbourne-FatherNamaar. HewasaSyrianbybirth,andforthe lasttwenty-sevenyearshehasacted aschaplaintoasmallSyriancommunityinMelbourne.Hisageatdeath was66;hewasordainedforty-two yearsago,andhelabouredatParisand RomebeforecomingtoMelbourne. FiftypriestswerepresentathisRequiematSt.Patrick'sCathedral,at whichArchbishopMannixpaidthe followingtributetothedeceased priest:"FatherNamaarwas,ina sense,astrangeramongstthem.He camefromadistantlandlikemanyof thepriests,buttherewasthebond offaithbetweenthem,andtherewas hisownpersonality.FatherNamaar wasafriendofallthepriests,andhe wasoftenawelcomeguestintheir homes.Therewasnopriestamongst themallwhohadmoresincerefriends thanthelateFatherNamaar.There wasspecialsympathy,too,forFather Namaar,becausehewasministeringin Melbournetohisownpeople,whowere butalittleflock.Andthroughno faultofhisown,thatflockwasbecomingsmallerandsmaller.Somehad passedaway,andothershadbecome absorbedinthecongregationsattendingtheCathedralandotherchurches ofthisdiocese.Nomatterhowfew theywere,FatherNamaarlovedhis people,andservedthemfaithfullyand well."

WhentheArchbishopreturnsfrom Queensland,heistoproceedtoSale, andtherebepresentatthelocalSt. Patrick'sDaycelebrations.Thatwill bejustafortnightbeforeourcelebrationinMelbourne.Ofthesuccessof either,thereneednowbenodoubt. OurMelbourneprocessionwillbea successiffornootherreasonthanthat severalthousandsoldierswillmakeit so.Fromallpartsofthecountry horsemenareofferingtotakepart,so thatevenwithoutflags,thereshould beunprecedentedenthusiasm.During thepastweek,theLordMayorhas givennoticethattheprocessionmust beheldintheafternoon,andnotin themorning;itwillthereforestartat 1.45p.m.insteadof11a.m.Formy partIlookonthisasanadvantage. Hitherto,thousandsofpeoplehave beenpreventedfromeithertakingpart initorwatchingitthroughthenecessitiesoftheiroccupation;thisyear thisobjectionwillberemoved,though thetimefixedisalittlecloseafter lunch.Thenewarrangement,however,willtakesomefurtherwindout ohthesailsofouropponents,whohave

triedtobasetheirobjectiontothe processiononthegroundthatshopkeeperswouldsuffer.

Dr.MartinsatWarwick. TheArgusreportsDr.Mannixas havingsaidatWarwick:"Heclaimed thathewaswithinhisrights-and thosewhohadgoneouttofightforthe littlenations,andwhosesonshadgone tofight,had,perhaps,anevengreater rightthanhe-toaskwhyIrelandhad hadgotself-government?Theywould goonaskingforit,andtheywould createallthetroubletheycould,not merelyinIreland,butinAustralia,untiltheygotit.(Loudapplause.)They werenotabletogotowar,andhad nodesiretogotowar,buttheywere carryingonanotherkindofwarfare whichwouldintheend-andthatend wasnotveryfaroff-beveryeffective. DowninMelbournewerepeoplewho expectedIrishmenonSt.Patrick'sDay tocarryinthefrontoftheirprocessiontheUnionJack.HehadnoobjectionwhatevertotheUnionJack initsproperplace.Hehadnodoubt itwasthesymbolofmanythingstheyhadtoadmireintheBritishEmpire, andforhisparthehadsomeadmirationfortheBritishEmpireinparts; but,whilehehadnoobjectiontothe UnionJackinEngland,Scotland, Wales,orAustralia,heobjectedstronglythatIrishmenatthepresenttime shouldwalkthroughthestreetsof Brisbane,Melbourne,oranyothercity inAustraliaandcarrytheUnionJack, whichwouldbedeemedtobe,and wouldbe,thesymbolofatrocitiesthat werebeingperpetratedinIrelandat thepresenttime.ThatwashisobjectiontohavingtheUnionJackcarried beforehim.Personallyheexpected thatintheSt.Patrick'sDayprocessioninMelbournetheywouldhave thousandsofreturnedsoldiers,who wentovertotheothersideofthe worldtofightfortheUnionJack. ThesemenweregoingonSt.Patrick's Daytoshowthattheycouldbeas loyalasanyAustralianstotheEmpire.eventoriskingtheirlivesforit, andatthesametimecouldbeloyalto thelandoftheirfathers."

HeretheArchbishopputsveryclearlytheideathatloyaltyfoundedonreasonissuperiortoblind"loyalism."Accordingtothedutyofpatriotism,we shouldloveourcountryandvenerate ourflag,butourgreaterloveshould betotheidealofjustice,lyingcloseto whichourflagshouldeverbe.The truedutyofloyaltyiswell-expressed byMarkTwaininapassagefrom"A YankeeattheCourtofKingArthur":

"Yousee,mykindofloyaltywas loyaltytoone'scountry,nottoitsinstitutionsandoffice-holders.

"Thecountryistherealthing,the substantialthing,theeternalthing;it isthethingtowatchover,andcare for,andbeloyalto;institutionsale extraneous,theyareitsmereclothing, andclothingcanwearout,become ragged,ceasetobecomfortable,cease toprotectthebodyfromwinterdisease anddeath.

TheColouredHarvesttellsofapeculiarpeoplefoundinAmerica,that havelongbeeninneedofreligiousinfluence,andwhomtheJosephine Fathersarenowtryingtoreach:"Up inthebackwoodsontheborderlandof WashingtonandMobilecounties,Alabama,therearesomefivehundredpeoplewhohavelivedprettymuchto themselves,Theyarecalled'Cadjians' or'Acadians.'Wehardlythinkthat thereisanybasisforsuchaname. However,thecaseendedinmyfavour aseveryonepresentcouldseeitwould. BydeliberatemisdirectiontheAdvocatesucceededingettingthehonourableacquittalomitted,butthatdid notmatter.

Nowtoshowthelengthstowhich thesepeoplewerepreparedtogo,allow metosetoutthesefacts.Theprosecutorwaspermittedtoaskmeabout my"sentiments"asregardstherising inEasterWeek.andSinnFein.He deliberatelysaidthathedesiredto showthatifIheldcertainsentiments thenitmustbeconcludedthatIexpressedthematKillarney.Suchs, thingwasneverheardofinacivilised courtbefore.ButtheJudgeAdvocatepermittedit.Andthereason.It wasthis:Theprosecutorhadsomo writtendocumentswhichhesaidwere inmyhandwriting,andwhichitwas allegedhadbeenobtainedbyraiding theSinnFeinpremisesinKerryand Cork,andwhich,moreover,established measamostdangerousperson.IfI hadmadeadmissionsaboutsentiments thenthesedocumentsweretobeproducedasproofthatIhaduttered thematKillarney.Ofcourse,the documentswereforgeries,madebythe SecretServicefrommyletterwhich theystolewhileIwasinprison.Could Prussiansbeatthat?

Whatscoundrelstheyare,andto whatdepthstheywillgointheirvillainy!Spiesbrokeintomylawyers' office,andstolepapersinconnection withmycase.Anotherwentthere dressedasapriestandpretendedtobe afriendofmine.Anothercameand representedhimselfasmycousinfrom NewYork,anddesiredtoseethe papersinconnectionwiththe case. 1. Fewpeopletookanyinterestin45 1 OrchardStreetbesidesthepoliceman, thesanitaryinspector,andtheschoolt attendanceofficer;andtheirinterest wasacompulsoryone.

OrchardStreetwasadirty,narrow streetfromwhichthesunwascarefully excluded,andwhichlaybehinda broadfashionablethoroughfare.The smartfrequentersofthefashionable thoroughfarewereunconsciousofthe meanstreetbehind;however,hadthey knownofitsomemighthavecared, butmostwouldhavebeenquiteuntroubledbytheexistenceofthia slum.Butallofthemwouldhave beenunanimousindeclaringthatit va''adisgracetothethingwhichwe callcivilisation,andunfortunately therearemanystreetslikeit.

Number45inthisstreetwasahigh tenementoffourstoreys,andineach ofthefourflatswereeightsingle apartmentswherefamilieswerehuddledtogetherbyfivesandsixes.Each apartmentwas"ticketed"bythesanitaryauthoritiesfor''fourandhalf adults,"whichmeantthatafather, motherandfivechildrenunderten couldliveinit.Hadeachofthe thirty-tworoomscontaineditsfull complementofinmatesitwillbeseen thatinsidethisonebuildingwouldbe asmanyindividualsasgotomakethe populationofasmallvillage.The stairsandlobbiesweregloomyand dirty,andthedoorsweresoclosetogetherthatwhenthefrequentdrunkenquarrelswereinprogresseveryone inthebuildingknewexactlywhatwas happening.Andthechildrenplayingonthestairswouldstoptheir gamestolisten,whentherewouldfall ontheirbabyearsunmentionable wordswhichwereoftenstoredintheir memoryagainstthetimewhenthey themselveswouldusethem.

Anextraordinarynumberofchildrenplayedonthosestairs.Itwasa remarkablefactthatthestorkbrought morebabiestothehomesinnumber 45thanitbroughttorichpeoplewho hadnicehousesandgardens.One wouldhavesaiditwascruelofthe storktobringsomanybabiesto thatdreadfulplace,butthismuch mustbesaid-thebabiesitbrought wereveryhealthyandchubby,just 2,muchsoasthebabiesofrichpeople.Itwasonlyaftertheyhadlived thereforafewmonthsthatmostof themturnedsicklyandpale.They didnotgrow,andlateronsomething strangehappenedtotheirbones,so thattheybecamebentandshapeless. Manyofthebabiesweresodisillusionedattheappearanceofnumber45, thatbeforetheyhadlivedtherevery longtheywentbacktoheaven. Thegrown-uppeopleinnumber45 were,humanlyspeaking,hopeless.But thechildren!theyawokeapitythat wasalmostpassionate.Whenlookingatthemplayinginthatevil-smellingstreetthethoughtswouldfly,in contrast,tothebeautifulplacesone knowsofwhereuponacarpetofsoft greengrassspreadinandoutamongst shadytreesarescatteredpalewildflowersthatshedthesweetestperfumeontheair.Strangethought thatthesameworldcanholdsuch beautyandsuchugliness!And strangerstillthethoughtthatthese childrenneverhaveseen,andperhaps neverwillsee,thebeauty,but,separatedfromitbysomerigidbarrier,are conmnedtoliveforeveramidstthe ugoass.

Shewasalreadyinitiatedintothesordidcaresofslumlife,andwhenher motherwasincapacitatedbydrink. sheitwaswhodidtheshoppingand thehousework,preparedthemeals, andmotheredlittleJosey--abustling sevenyearoldmother;herlittleflyingfeetwereneverstill"Busylikea bee,"aswassaidoftheSaintwhose namewasgivenherinbaptism.

Totheslumchildourholyfaith comesasthefirstbeautifulthingina lifewhichhashithertobeendestitute ofallbeauty.

ItwasthemonthofMay,andwithintwoweeksoftheFeastofCorpus Christi.OnthatdayCeciliawasto makeherfirstHolyCommunion.There isaglowofsplendouroverthedayon whichalittlegirlmakesherfirstCommunion.Shelovestowearapretty whitedressandtoscatterflowersin theprocessionoftheBlessedSacrament.Ittouchesinhertheveinof poetry.Cecilia'sthoughtsdweltlovinglyandexpectantlyonthatdayforthechildrenofthepoorknowbut fewpleasures.Itwasnicetopicture herselfinanewwhitedressandnew shoesandstockings.Herclothes,so far,hadalwaysbeenwellwornby someoneelsebeforetheycameher way.Butshedidnotthinkofthe clothestotheexclusionofeverything else.Shehadaclearperceptionof themeaningofHolyCommunion. OftenshehadexplaineditalltoJosey astheysattogetheratnight,veryparticularlytellinghimthat"TheHoly EucharistwasthetrueBodyand BloodofJesusChristtogetherwith HisSoulandDivinity."Poorlittle Joseydidnotunderstandthemeaning ofthosebigwords,buthelistenedpatiently.Healwayslookedasifhe didnotthinkitworthwhiletotake muchinterestinthethingsofthe worldbecausehedidnotmeantor"mainherelong.ButhelovedCecilia somuchthathewasquitehappytosit withhishandinhersandlisten,althoughhedidnotunderstand.

AsitdrewnearertotheFeastCecilia'sjoywasovershadowedbyanalmostsickeningdread;forSisterMary Joseph-toCeciliaasupremelywise being-hadsaidinschoolthatnolittle girlwouldbeallowedtomakeherfirst Communionunlessherparentshad providedherwithwhiteclothing.Sisterreallyintendedtogiveallvery poorchildrenclothingfortheoccasion, butitwasnotexpedienttoletthisbe known,fortheparentsinOrchard Streetwereeveryreadytotakeadvantageofasituationofthiskind;to shirktheirresponsibilitieshadbecome ahabitwiththem.Although,during thelastfewdaysCecilia'smotherhad beensober,shehadnotyetbought theclothes,andsheseemedindifferent totheintolerablethoughtthather littlegirlmightnotmakeherfirst Communion.

Thenthatwhichwehavegliblyrepeatedfromchildhoodischargedwith newmeaningandthethingsoffaith becomeveryrealtous.Onthatday thepalefigureofOurLadyglowswith life.Shestretchesouthandsoflove tous,andwebecomeherchildrenand knowherforourMother,notthrough lifeonly,butbeyondlife,beyond death.Suchamoment,hastenedby sorrow,nowcamedimlytoCecilia, childasshewas.Afterthosedays ofperturbationasenseofpeaceenvelopedher,andshewasconsoled.She rosefromherknees,andJosey,seeingthathereyeswerewet.slippeda comfortinghandintohers.

V. Whenthechildrenreachedhomethe lampwaslit,andtoCecilia'sinexpressiblewonderandjoytherelay uponthetableabeautifulwhitefirst Communiondress.AtfirstCecilia thoughtOurLadyherselfhadlaidit there,butlookingroundshesawher mother,withfacetransfiguredbya smilethatmusthavebeenareminiscenceofherownfirstCommunionday. ThenCeceliaknewthatherpersistent faithinthehiddengoodwithinher mother'shearthadnotbeenmisplaced,aswithacryofjoysherushedto thearmswhichawaitedher. Butitwasamiraclealterall.Our Ladyhadtouchedthesoulthatexistedsomewherebeneaththatappallingexterior,andhadhelpedthepoor sinnertomakehersupremeeffort,becauseitisnoeasymatterforsucha

onetoabstain,evenfortwoshort weeks,fromdrunkenness-thatmost enchantingofallvices.

ThusCeciliamadeherfirstHoly Communion.Asshewalkedinthe processionafterwardsshewasalmost toohappy.Hersofteyessparkled asshelovinglyfingeredtheflowersbeforesheletthemfluttertotheground. Eachtimeshepassedthelittlebrothershelovedsowellshecouldnot refrainfromlookingupandsending himasmile,tremulousandfugitive, likearayoflightcomingfromwithin. Waseveranythingsotouchingly beautifulasCecilialookedjustthen?

RememberingOrchardStreet,one couldhavewishedhergentlesoulto passto,Godinthathourofinnocence andhappiness,butitmaybethatshe isneededonearthandwasonthat dayfittedforthepracticeofhermissioninlife.Therearenotmany saintsinastreetlikeOrchardStreet, butsometimesthereisbornabeing whowillremainunspottedinspiteof herenvironment,onewhosevery knowledgeoflifeandsinwillbeher safestarmour.Inthosedarkplaces hervirtuesshinewithanaddedsplendour.SheisGod'sapostlediscoveringtotheerringonesaroundherthe secretofmakinglifeholyandbeautifuleveninaslum.

Inoneofthepooresthomesinthat grimtenement-ahomeofscarcely morethanfourbarewalls-livedseven yearoldCeciliaCrane.Shewasa prettylittlegirlwithdarkhair,soft darkeyesandaquaint,earnestlookthelookofonewhowishestodowhat isrightatallcosts.Shehad,too, imaginationandintelligence-freegifts ofnatureallottedtothepoorchild justasoftenastotherich.Withher airofsweetgravitysheresembledthe childportraitsoftheLittleFlower. Beautyandinnocence!Strangeplace theychoosetobloomin!ThereCeciliadweltwithhermotherandadelicatelittlebrothercalledJosey.Her fatherneedscarcelybetakenintoaccount.Hewasabornloaferwholivedmostofthetimeinamodellodging-housenear-by,leavinghisfamily tolookafterthemselves.Suchmeagre careasthechildrenhadwasgiven thembytheirmother,andshewasan intemperatewomanwithnosenseof responsibilitiesorofconsequences.She seemedtohavenoredeemingvirtues, andwasseldomdecenteithertothe earortotheeye.Yetinspiteof everythingCecilialovedher.Inher precocityshehadfathomedtheutter pathosofhermother'slife,andpitied her,protectingandsafeguardingheras

SotherefellonCeciliathisdread, andasenseofisolationsuchasonly alittleforlornchildoftheslums couldknow.Shehadvaguedreams ofamiracle,andinallofherdreams wasabeautifulrichladywhohad heardinsomemarvellouswayofCecilia'snecessity,andwhoappearedat thelastmomenttobestowuponher everythingthatwasrequired.But herfaithinthatdreamwasbeginning tofalter,andshedidnotdarehopefor itsfulfilment.

Onthelastnightbutonebeforethe greatFeastCeciliaandlittleJosey kneltin Altar.thechurchbeforetheLady HeapsofflowerslayatOur Lady'sfeet-flowersofcrimsonand whiteandyellow.Ceciliadidnot knowtheirnames,butthebeautyof theircolourandfragrancemadeher heartache.ShelookedupintoOur Lady'sface,which,sodivinelytender, seemedtoinvitearequest.Buthow difficultitwastoexplainaboutthe dresswithoutblaminghermother,and herchiefdreadinaskingOurLady's helpwasthatshemightsaysome- thingdisloyalofhermotherWhilst shehesitatedhowtophraseherprayer somelinesofaMayhymnsungin schoolthatdaywentthroughher mind.

"WiltthoubeaMothertous Thro'life'sdarkanddrearyway?" Thatwasallshecouldthinkofbut OurLady,whoknewallthatCecilia dumblyfelt,heardthatwistfulandsilentprayer.Tomanyofusthere comes,inthislife,aspiritualbirthday.
