FormonthspastithasbeentheinvariablecustomfortheAscendancy crowdtodilateupontheiniquityof shootingpoor,indefensivepolicemen. LordFrenchwon'tthankthemfor asking-foritamountedtothat-that policemenbegivenarespite.Yesterdayafternoon,allIrelandwasstartled,/ butsurelynotsurprised,thattheViceroyhadbeenshotat,andhadhada miraculousescape.liewasambushedwhilstreturningfromavisittothe WestofIreland.Fromthecolumns ofpressmatteralreadydevotedtothe subject,itisdifficulttogetacoherent accountoftheaffair,butonething standsoutclearlyandreducesIrish officialdomtoastateofhelplessrage. Itistheextraordinary,theuncanny, knowledgethatprevailsinvarious quartersastoeverymovetobemade bytheCastle. SPIRITS!

Inthepresentinstance,everyone was"supposed"tobelievethatLord FrenchwasinEngland!Onlyhisimmediatepersonalstaffweresupposed toknowthathewasvisitingafriend some60milesoutsideofDublin. Again,presumingthatnewshadsomehowleakedout,itisbewilderingtotry andaccountfortheknowledgeheldby theattackersthathewoulddetrainat Ashtownstation.Ithasforlong beentherulethattheViceroy,onreturningtotheLodge.fromthecountry.wouldnotproceedstraighttoone ofthecitystations,butwoulddetrain atoneofthestationsjustoutside.

Whichparticularonethiswouldbewas notdetermineduntilthelastmoment, anditisilluminatingtolearnthat,althoughthemotor-carswerereadyto leavetheCastleatanytime,thedriversdidnotknowuntilthelastminute thatitwastobeAshtownthat'day.

Yetalltheseplanswereknowntothe menwhomadetheattackontheViceroyyesterday!NowondertheCastlepeoplehavethe"jumps,"andare reportedtosee"ghosts"ateveryturn.

MOREPRECAUTIONS.

Eversincethesoldier-sentryputa bulletthroughMr.MacPherson'smotorcarsomemonthsago,extraordinary precautionshavebeentakenbyhimself andtheViceroywhenleavingtheirresidence.Anumberofcarsaredrawn upatthedoor,andonebyonethey dashalongtheroad,itbeingamatterofconjecturewhichcarcontains Raidsandarrests.suppressionsand proclamations,warrantsandseizures, aretheorderofthedayinIreland.I amgettingfrightenedatthesightof thedailypapers,foreachissuerecords alistofoutragesthecontemplationof whichmakesone'sheadreel.And tomethedreadfulpartisthatno matterwhatreinIputonmypen, theremustbehostsofreaderswho takemyaccountsofIrishaffairswith agrainofsalt.Ican'tblamethem, forI,whoamonthespot,cannottrust theevidenceofmyeyes,andinsiston confirmingthethings1seebyreading thesubsequentaccountsinthevariouspapers.GoodnessknowsIam tiredoftalkingofthesethings,but recentlyIhavecarriedoutsomeinvestigationswhichwillstartleyouinto belief.

HOWIRELANDIS"SPOILT"!

Nowmyinvestigationsarenotsecret investigations.Theyareopenfor anyonewholovestruthforitsown sake,toverify.Andiftheyareincorrect,wellpeoplecanjudgemeon thespot.IhavetakentheDublin dailypapersfromNovember23rd.to December6th,1919,aperiodoffourteendays,andextractedtherefromthe followingfigures.Mind,theseoutragesareonlythosethatareallowed byDublinCastletobepublished,and wearefreetoimaginehowmanysimi-

thepreciouspersonage.Soonthisoccasion,therewerefivecarsintheprocessionfromAshtown.Whatwasthe Viceroy'scarisnotquiteclear,butit appearsthattheattackingpartybelievedhewasinthesecondcar.That wasthemostdamaged,butweare toldthatthecarinwhichFrenchdid sitalsoreceivedtwobullets.This carwasinGrafton-streetthismorning, drivenbyasoldier,andthebullet holeswereasourceofcuriositytothe crowd.

POLICEANDSOLDIERSTHICK.

TheViceroywasaccompaniedinthe trainbyhispersonalstaff,anumber ofdetectives,anduniformedpolice, whiletheremainingaccommodation wasgivenuptosoldiers.Whenhe alightedatAshtownhewasgreeted byaguardofhonourofmoresoldiers, whichheduly"inspected,"andadetachmentofpolicewho"held"the railwaystationandapproaches.As well,policewerepostedalongthe wholeroadfromthestationtothe 'iceRegalLodge.French,withhis staff,andsomesoldiersanddetectives, tilledupfourofthecars.Thefifth waspackedwithluggage.Themain bodyofthesoldierswereleftatthe station,butanumberofpoliceaccompaniedthemotorsonbicycles.A"G" man.Sergt.Halley.satwiththedriver oftheViceroy'scar.andhadoneof hisfingersshotoffjustashewastiring arevolverattheattackingparty.

THEATTACKINGPARTY ARRIVES.

Thespotchosenfortheattackwas some300yardsfromAshtownstation,at across-roadwherestandstheHalf-way House,apopularinnforcyclistsfrom Dublin.justbeforenoon.wearetold, anumberofyoungmenappearedat theinn,someonfoot,someonbicycles. Theirappearancecausednoconcern, foritistheusualthing.Theseyoung men,wearealsotold,wanderedall abouttheplace.visitedthestables, chattedwitheveryone,andindulgedin agameofhandballinthecourts. Thingswereveryquietat1o'clock,the barshuttingdownandthepeople thereaboutsknockingoilforlunch. Suddenlyshotsrangout,andseveral explosionsoccurred.Peopleranout ofthehouses,buttheywere,sosurprisedandsosearedthattheycannotgiveaconnectedstory.'Theyagree, however,thatsomeoftheyoungmen wereseentolinethehedgealongthe road,whichisverynarrowhere,and

Thefirstshotseemstohavebeen firedatapolicemanondutyatthe cross-roads,butthiswasaccidental. Severalmenpulledanoldcartoutof thestableandflungitacrosstheroad. Thepolicemansaidsomething,and theywarnedhimtoclearout.Herefused,ascuffleensued,andarevolver wentoff,hittinghimonthefoot.The approachofthecars,evidentlysooner thanintended,drewthemenof,and thepolicemanlimpedawaytoo.The carthadnotbeensetright'acrossthe road,andasthecarsemergedfromthe ambush,oneofthepartycamerightin themiddleoftheroadandheldarevolverattheoccupants.Inasecond hedropped,shotrightthroughthe head.Incredibleasitappears,sew. eralofhiscompanionsrushedoutto theroadanddraggedhimin.But hewasalreadydead,andtheyleft him.Theattackingpartythenmade offacrosstheefilds,and.notasign hassincebeenseenofthem,although onlyafewhadbicycles!

SOLDIERSARRIVE.

Thedriveroftheluggagecarwasin therear.She(thedriverwasalads') withgreatpresenceofmind,turnedher. caratthefirstshotandtorebackto thestationtowarnsoldiers.The latternowcameupatthedouble,but whentheyarrivedattheHalf-way (lousetheyweretoo"blown"togo further!Aneye-witnesstoldareporterthatitwasagod-senditallhanpeliedatthelunch-hour.sothatthefarmworkerswereallawayatlunch,forthe soldiersbegantofirewildlyastheyran alongtheroad,andsomeonemight havegothit!Itisnowdefinitely statedthatthepersonalescortofthe Viceroyare'absolutelyforbiddento leavehimonanyaccount,andthatis thereasontheydidnotpursuethe attacking-party.Whetheranyofthe carsactuallystopped,evenforaninstant,wedon'tknow,althoughitwould appearthattheyputonspeedand racedtotheLode.LordFrenchis reportedtohaveducked"atthefirst shot.Idon'tseeanynecessityforthe paperstotellusthat.Guessanyone wouldhaveducked.involuntarily. thesame

ThtKalgoorlieC.Y.M.S.haveresumedoperationsforthe1920season, thoughowingtothe'absenceofmany membersintheagriculturalandcoastal areastheattendancehas,beenlimited. Thesecretary,Mr.E.T.Fels,hasopenrdtheballwithanenergy,which sgurswellforthe1920season.Asit-Zateon"StateGovernors"withthe 11.A.C.B.S.occupiedtheattentionof membersattheirlastmeeting.Messrs. A.J.BoylenandAustinCariggadvocatedthesweepingawayofanoffice toolongtoleratedbyademocratic community,andwhichwasonlya relicoftoadyism.Onbehalfofthe H.A.C.B.S.Messrs.HillandKennan statedthattheofficewasanecessary corollaryofoursystemofgovernment, andstatedthattheargumentsadducedwerereallyinfavourofachangeof themethodofselectingtheoicupant oftheoffice,ratherthanofabolishing thepositionitself.Thoughthehonours'restedwiththeH.A.C.B.S.,the mannerinwhichthequestionwas threshedoutshowsthatthemembers oftheK.C.Y.M.S.willplayanimportantpartinformingAustraliansentiment,voicingCatholicviews,anddefendingCatholicrights.

Thesocietyislosingtwoofitsmost activemembers.Mr.A.J.Boylen,an ex-C.B.C.student,hasobtainedanentranceforthetwoyearscoursetothe ClaremontTrainingCollege,whileMr. R.Boylen,junr..hassignedafour years'apprenticeshiptothePharmacy DepartmentofTioanBros.,Ltd.Both werefeundationmembers,andboth tookanactivepartinthedebatesand socialworkconductedbythebranch.

ItishopedthatmembersoftheGoldfieldsbranchesgeingPerthwardswill losenotimeinassociatingthemselves withtheCatholicorganisationinthe metropolitanarea.Ourlosswillthen betheirgain.Unityisstrength,and ourCatholicsocietiesneedstheco. sperationofeveryCatholic,butmore especiallyofourCatholicyouth.

AquestiondemandingthecloseattentionofourpastorsandBrothersis theenormousdriftfrontourCatholic schoolsintonon-Catholicsocieties, which,thoughtheyclaimtobenonsectarian,arealwayspervadedbyan anti-Catholicspirit-aspiritwhich sapsthevitalityofourCathclicyouth andlargelyundoesthemagnificent worko!ourCatholicschools.

DuringthelastmonthAnglicanismintheOctaveofPrayerforChristian Unitywasdeeplyconcernedinthereturnofourseparatedbrethrentothe FaithandpracticesoftheMotherChurch.WeintheHouseholdofthe FaithcommittedbyOurBlessedLordtoHisServantPeterappreciatethe significanceofthisOctaveandthegreatpurposesunderlyingit.Wedonot under-valttetheunrestthatisevidentinthespirituallifewhichyetburns inthatgrowingsectionofProtestantismwhichisa-hungeringforacloser unionwithChrist.ThewarmthandbeautyoftheOldMotherChurchof Christendomisbecomingmoreappealinglyattractivetothem,andliketruantsoulswhohavewanderedafarintostrangeandbarrenfields,tiredfrom theirwanderings,theylookwithyearningeyes,backwardstotheoldhome andtheoldpathways.AchangeindeedhascomeoverthetemperofAnglicanthoughtsincethatgreatsearchingofsoulsmarkedintheannalsof ProtestantismbytheTractarianmovement.Romeisnottheforbiddencity thatitseemedtobeinthosefarawaydays,onebyoneoldantipathiesare beingrolledaway,andtheglimmeringofanewlightbreaksfromtheVatican uponnotonlytheEpiscopalianmindofEngland,butalsouponthegreat bodyofProtestantisminAmerica.Dimandveryslenderthoughthesolitary lightmaybe,thereismorethanaslenderbupethatitmayyetburstwith fullerradianceuponthem.HighChurchAnglicanismnolongerbendstothe viciousNo-PoperycriesofthatdwindlingsectionofProtestantismwhichrepresentstheLowChurchwingoftheAnglicanbody.Thegreatwarhas broughtaboutavitalchangeintheemotionsofthatspiritualelementofHigh Anglicanism,whichlooksthroughtheopenportalsofitschurchesvainlyfor thatSacramentalPresencewhichwasdrivenfromitsaltarsbyParliament andtheDeformersinthe16th.century.Agreatreactionarychangehastaken placeinrecentyearsinthereligiousthoughtofourseparatedbrethren.Protestantismisnotnowthesacrosanctthingitwastothem---ratherhasitbecpmeenvelopedwithdoubtanduncertainty.InEnglandandAmericathereis amongstitsadherentsatrendtowardsthatunitywhichOurLorddesired whenheprayed"thatallmaybeoneinorderthattheworldmaybelieve thatThouhassentMe,"andthistrendisbeingmadeincreasinglyclearby thecontinuousflowofconvertstotheCatholicChurchfromthevarioussectionsof "In50years' thegreatconvertsonofan ArchbishopofCanterbury,thelateMonsignorRobertHughBenson,"EnglandwillbeCatholic."Catholicinthetruesenseofhavingreturnedtothe centreofunityinChristendom-theRockofPeter.Wearenotsooptimistic;butprayerisawonderfulalchemist,andtheChurchUnityOctave originatedbytheSocietyoftheAttonement,inAmerica.inthedaysbefore itssubmissiontotheauthorityofthePope.hasalreadyachievedfar-reachingresults.Protestants,itisinteresting,andverygratifyingtonote.have selectedthisspecialOctaveasatimeofconcertedprayerforunityinagreementwiththeCatholicChurch.ThehistoryofthisOctaveofPrayerfor Churchunityandmissionaryextensionisinteresting.Itwasoriginated, bytheLAMP,anAnglicanAmericanpublication,in1908.Lessthantwo yearsfromthefirstobservanceoftheOctave,theSocietyoftheAtonement WasreceivedintotheCatholicChurch.ThecorporatesubmissionoftheAnglican.BenedictineMonksofCaldey,andtheAnglicanBenedictineNunsofMilfordHaven,SouthWales,whichfollowedin1913.hasbeenattributedto theirfaithfulobservanceoftheOctaveofPrayer.InDecember,1919,the OctavereceivedthesanctionandblessingofPiusX:thiswasfollowedby thatofCardinalsFarley,O'Connell.GibbonsandFalconio,inAmerica.and laterbyCardinalsBourne,ofWestminster,Logue,ofIreland,andBegin,of Quebec.whogavetheirapprovaltotheOctave.ManyArchbishopsand BishopsintheUnitedStatesgaveittheirendorsementandsupport.In 1917ourHolyFather,BenedictXV..extendedtheobservanceoftheOctaveto thewholeworld.Protestantstheworldoverhavebeguntoobserveit,especiallyAnglicans,whoemulatethezealofCatholicsinpersuadingallmen toprayfortherealisationofOurLord'sownprayer,"Thatallmaybeone."

ThreehundredAnglicanBishopsareexpectedtomeetinJulynextat LambethPalace,theseatoftheArchbishopofCanterbury.Amongstthe subjectsselectedfordiscussionare:W.RelationtoanReunionwithother churches:(alEpiscopalchurches:(10,non-Episcopalchurches,withquestionsastorecognitionofministers."validity"ofsacraments:suggestedtransitionalsteps.SimilarmatterswerediscussedataGeneralConventionof theProtestantEpiscopalChurchofAmericalastyear,andgeneralapproval themovementtowardsChurchUnitywasendorsed. AremarkableincidentinconnectionwiththeConventionwasthatbeforeitsadjournment CardinalMercier,theninAmerica.waspresentbyspecialinvitation,when speechesofChristianandciviccourtesywereexchanged.

Thegreatneedoftheworldto-dayisChristianUnity.Thelateworld warhasleftdesolationandruininitswake,andthewholesystemofsociety seemstobeinneedofrepair.Neverbefore,perhaps.sinceChristfirstutteredhispriestlyprayerforunityhastherebeenatimewhenunityamong Christianstheworldoverwassonecessarytothereconstructionofsociety andthesalvationofthehumanracethannow.Weseethemightyforces ofChristianityoutsideofRomanauthoritysplitintofragments,andwasting theirundoubtedstrengthandinfluenceinantipathiesagainsteachother,destroyingthe'fundamentalsofthatsweetcharityandbrotherhoodmeantby thecommand.-)ftheSaviourwhenhesaid,"LoveoneanotherasIhaveloY. edyou."SurelytheessenceoftruereligionisCharityandLove.The heart'sdesireofthelatePiusX.wasthatallthescatteredsheepofChrist shouldbebroughtbackintotheOneFoldoftheOneShepherd,andjustas OurDivineLordlovedallmen.BenedictXV..sittingintheChairofPeter,His representativeonearth,reachesouthiswelcomingarmstothegreatbodyof ourseparatedbrethren.entreatingthemtomaketheirpeaceonewithanotherandreturntotheCentreofUnity-thebarqueofPeter.Unlessthe forcesofChristiandemocracycanrallyroundthisdivinely-ordainedcentre ofunityinChristendom,theoutlookforthefutureisyerydark.Religion isthehumanisingforcebehindallcivilisationandsocialorder-destroyit andyoudestroythefabricofsocietyandtheworld'speace-thatpeacefor whichthenationsarehopingandprayingwillbechasedawayintothere. gionsofdreamland.WeprayforChristianUnity,butunlessournrayers arefilledwiththeCharityofChrist.theywillavailusnothing."Alas!" saysaverypatientworkerinthisnewmissionfield,"ourunderstandingof whatconstitutesChristiantruth,theChristianreligion,andtheChristian Church.issoradicallydifferentinsomanyvitalparticulars,thatonlythe HolyGhostisomnipotentenoughtomakeusofonemindandofoneheart asthe'primitiveChristianswereinPentecostaltimes.."Thereissome'positive andpracticalthingwecando,andthatistorepeatOutLord's-swnorayer. AnoldresidentoftheStateinthe personofMr.GregoryPrunsterdied attheresidenceofhisson,Mr.Joseph Prunster,onthe20th.oflastmonth, afteralongillness.Thedeceasedwas bornin1827,andwas63yearsinWesternAustralia.Hewasacarpenterandjoinerbytrade,andfor19years wasintheemployofDr.Gibneyatthe SubiacoOrphanage.Muchofhiswork wasdonefortheChurchatSubiaco, York,andtheConventofMercy,Perth. Thedeceasedlivedwithhissonin Yorkforthelast21'years,andwas muchrespectedbyallwhoknewhim. Atthetimeofhisdeathhewasone monthshortofhis93rd.year.His wifepredeceasedhim42yearsago.He leavesafamilyofthreesonsandone daughter,viz.,Messrs.J.H.Prunster (York),Bro.Alphonsus(Clontarf),A. G.Prunster(GeraldtonI,andMrs.A. At4,30onthemorningofAugut 23,1918,McCarthy,incommandof D.Companyofthe16thBattalion,led hismen"overthetop,"hisobjective beingasectoroftrenchheldbyFritz_ OnhisleftweretheLancashii:eFusiliers,but,whiletheAustralianssucceededintheirobject,theLancs.for somereasonfailedintheirs.Theposi-

Ihadtocutouttherestofthemachine-gunstunts,however,soasto gettheendofthestory."Whatabout those50prisoners"?Iasked.The tooth-ache-lookonhisfacegaveway toasmilehere.Therewas"nothing" inthat,itappears,andafterwhathad gonebeforewecanwellbelieveit! Hehadbeenjoinedbyasecondrunner,andtogethertheyarrivedata cross-trench.Theirappearancewas thesignalforarushtowardsthemon thepartof50enemysoldiers:notag. gressivelv,however,butwithextended arms.TheysurroundedthetwoAustralians.pattingthemonthebacksand showingunmistakablytheirjoyeat theirbeingcaptured.Itwasclear thattheirmoralewasabsolutelybroken.

Thiscrowningeventtookplaceover 700yardsawayfromhisunit!Singiehanded.startingoffwithasix-chainberedrevolverandtwobombs,this Australiansoldier.hadflunghimself intoenemyterritoryforhalf-a-mile: hadkilledupwardsof20Germanslineludingfourofficers);hadcaptured50 prisoners:andhaddestroyed8machine-gunpositions!Imaginetheaudacityofit,thesupremecourageand contemptfordanger,thecoolpresence ofmindwhichhemusthavedisplayed. eveninhisfrequentreequipmentof himself,asheranalong,withenemyweaponsandenemybombs!

LIEUT.LAWRENCEDOMINICMcCARTHY.V.C..C.deG tionwasbadfurtheAustralians,forit meantthattheirleftflankwasexposed.Theyweresoontorealisethis, andfortwohours'theyenduredagallingenfiladefirefromthemachine-guns oftheenergyinthatquarter.Asort oftug-of-warresulted,foreverynow andthentheAustralianswouldforce theGermansbackalongtheirtrench, onlytoyieldground'whenFritzwas reinforced.

Twohoursofthiswasenoughfor McCarthy,andhedecidedthatsomethinghadtobedone.Theonly thing,ofcourse.wastorootoutthe nestofmachine-gunsthatwerenot onlywipingouthiscommand,but holdinguptheadvanceoftheEnglishregiment.Eitherthosemachinegunshadtobestopped,oritwasonly amatteroftimetillhiswholedetachmentwasaccountedfor.Addedto that,thefailureoftheLancashireFusilierstoreachtheirobjectivemightprobablymeanafatalhitchinthewhole planofoperations.AndMcCarthy. havingdecidedithadtobedone,also decidedtodoithimself.

Thenearestmachine-gunwasonlyabout20yardsdistant.Witha"runner."McCarthysuddenlyhoppedinto theopen.andwithaspringlandedin

withinrange,hethrewthebomb,The wholesevenwentout!

Withoutapausehemadetoranothermachine-gunposition,onlytobe suddenlyconfrontedbytheGerman CompanyCommander,whowasaccompaniedbyfourorfiveRedCrossmen. Theywereonlytenyardsoff,andthe Germansawhimfirst.Hefiredtwo shotsatMcCarthy,both'missed,beforethelattercouldgethisrevolver up.ButMcCarthy'saimwastrue.The Germanwentdown,shotthroughthe chest.Itisworthyofchronicling thatasMcCarthywenttopassbythe fallenmanthelattersaluted,andthen putouthishandtoshakehandswith hisvictor."Itookhishand,"McCarthytoldme,"andforgettingforthe moment,gaveitashake.Imusthave almosttornhisarmout."TheRed Crossmenpickeduptheirofficerina blanketandtookhimtoourlines.

ButMcCarthywasoutforapurpose,andpushingonheranintoanothermachine-gun.Twomenfellto hisrevolverontheinstant;theother fivesprangtotkieirfeetandthrewup theirarms. Altogetherthissupermandestroyed8machine-gunpositions.Two'ofthemwerevacant.At theothersixpositionshehadtokill

NowondertheColoneloftheLancashireFusiliers-whenthatregiment, findingalloppositionsuddenlycease, attaineditsobjective-personallycalf edonMcCarthvsBattalionCommandertoexpresshisadmiration'ofsuch astoundingbravery!Theonlywonderistherecommendationforthe VictoriaCross,initiatedbytheColonel andtheofficersoftheFusiliers,asit was,tooksolongtoproduceresult.McCarthy'snamerangthroughallthe trenches-almostallthetelephonelines werechokedbymessagesofadmirationandcongratulationfromallover France-andyetittooktheauthorities fromAugust23rduntilDecember14th todeterminethattheinitialsV.C. shouldbeplacedafterthatname.

Ihadnotthehearttokeepthegun pointedatmyvictimandstartanother cross-examinationinregardto'the CroixdeGuerre(AvecPalmesi,which thePresidentofFrancehadconferred onhimforhisshareinthefightingaroundMoquetFarmin1916.AllI knowofthatis,thathiscompanycommanderbeingwounded,"Sergeant McCarthy.withtwootherW.A.boys- sergeantsBradleyandMinchin(now Lieut.Bradley,ME.,D.C.M.,andLieut. Minchin,D.S.O.,M.C.)-ledthecompanyoverthetop.NordidIlike toaskhimwhyitwasheworeonly onewound-stripeonhissleeve.At least,heisentitledtowearfour stripes,forhewaswoundedatthe landingatGallipoliandagaininAugust,1915:wasgassedatZonnebeke; andwaswoundedagainatBullecourt in1917.
