Itissomethingtoseeanation, howeversmall,pulsatingwiththe forceofsomemightypurpose.It thrillsonestrangelytofeelthatpulsation.Therecouldbenomistaking thesignificanceofthetroopingtogetherofthetensofthousandsof theinhabitants.Valettawasfullof personsofallclassesasearlyas twoo'clockintheafternoon.They hadcomefromallpartsoftheisland,eventhemostdistant.Distance ishardlyconsidered,whendesires arestronganddeep.Allwishedto participateinthereceptionofthe EnvoyofthePope;andhisarrival constitutedinthethoughtofallthe beginningoftheEucharisticCongress.ThePapalLegate,his EminenceCardinalDomenicoFerrate,wasconscious,andindeedhe sawwithhisveryeyes,thatanationalwelcomewasaccordedtohim. Longbeforethedespatchvessel Hussarwastimedtoarrive,people inthousandsflockedtoSt.John's Church,whitherhisEminencewas presentlytoheconductedinakind oftriumphalprocession.Allwished toseeagainthematchlesstemple, adornedfortheCongressfunctions allwishedtonotethethronecoveredwithsilkandfacingtheRoyal throne,uponwhichhewasfirstti restuponlandingonthisisland,hallowedoncebythetreadofthefeet oftheApostleoftheGentiles.When cariositywassatisfied,andabodyof thepoliceforcewasmarchedinto thetemple,ageneralimpulseseemedtoturnthethousandstotheUpperandLowerBerraccasandtothe bastionsoverlookingtheGrand I!arbour.Soonallplacesthat promisedagoodviewoftheHussarenteringtheportwereoccupied. Menandwomenstoodinserried ranks,eigl.tortendeep.Therewas adarkhumanlinedrawnthence right.alongtothepointoftheLower Barraccafromwhichonecanbest commandatthesametimeaviewof theGrandHarbourandoftheepee sea.

TheEntryofthe"Hussar."

ThreelaunchesfilledwithUnivercitystudentswereawaitingnear theIlurhonrmouthtotestifyitheir joyatthecardinal'sarrival.The presentandthefutureseemedtobe embodiedinthemtheirwelcome leathewelcomeofyouth,fervent antrue.Numerousotherboats wereliesewiseawaitingwiththesame purposeintheirhumanfreightsas animatedthestudents,whomthe PapalLegatewassogladtosee, lookinguponthemasthepromiseof theentireisland.Alltheboats, treatandsmall,accompaniedthe Hussarinherprogresstohermooring.Thecrowdswayedandcould hardlycontainitself.Thenthere buretforththestifledcryofwelcome,wl.ichwastakenupinsuccessionbyallonthebastionsasthe shipmovedbeforethem.Atlength thePapalLegatewasonthestill waters,hisvoyageaccomplished,in theverycentreofthepopulationof theisland.Vallettawelcomedhim fromonesideoftheport,theThree proudoftheirpast,fromthe other.,

TheLanding

noteasilybeeffacedfromhismemory.Thousandsofpeople,packedtogether,hadwaitedforhoursto catchaglimpseoftheCardinalLegate,andwhenthemomentcame, theenormousthrongwasinstantly transformedintoamassofwaving armsandhats,whilecheerafter cheerroseupfromeverythroat.The carriagewaswithdifficultymoved infrontoftheCustomHouseentranceandIllsEminenceatonce tookhisseat,Asthehorsesmoved off,thecrowdspressedforwardendeevouringtofollowinthewakeof thecarriageandwereonlyrestrainedbythe,vigorouscontrolofthe l'olice.

Allalongtheroute,whichwas thicklylinedwithspectators,he evokedthesamemanifestationswith whichhehadmetfromthemoment ofhisarrival.

OnhisarrivalneartheChurchthe VilhenaBandstruckthenotesofthe PapalHymnamidstloudapplause; afterwhichahymncomposedforthe occasionwasslingbyachoruscif children.

HisEminencehavingbeenconductedtoaspeciallyerectedthrone,His

rieshaveheldhighandunsulliedthe FlagoftheCatholicReligionandof theirunshakeableattachmenttothe HolySee.

OurveneratedPontiffwellknew thattheClergyandthePeopleof Maltawouldwhole-heartedlyrespond toHisexpectations,andwouldadd yetanothergoldenpagetotheir gloriousarchives.

Formyownpart,Ishallonlysay thatinagainsettingfootonthisbelovedisland,Ifeelthatdeepand sincerejoywhichonefeelsatseeing,afterthelapseofseveralyears, personswhoaretrulydeartoone andwhohaveneverbeenforgotten.

Iamfurtherintenselydelightedat thefactthatthis,andmypreceding isit,werewiththeobjectofthe erecterglorificationofJesusand Mary,who,inseparabletheonefrom theother,constitutethegloryand happinessoftheWorld,andtoWhom oreconsecratedthetwogreatestaffectionsoftheMaltesepeople.

YourGrace Idesiretosayto yoervenerableandworthyClergy andtothisstrongandsympathetic population,thattheveryheartyreceptionaccordedtotheLegateofthe

.Youhavethusshownbrightly,the linetraditionalharmonywhichhappilyprevailsbetweenthePastorand hisflock,betweentheClergyandthe faithful.WithallmyheartIcongratulatetheArchbishopandyou uponthat,andIsincerelypraythat thissavingandfruitfulunionmay endureunchangedandmayincrease evermorethemoralandmaterial prosperityofthispeople,solaborious,loyal,andhonest.

Itwillheapleasingdutytome, illustriousJudge,tomakeknownto theHolyFatherthesentimentsof affectionandofvenerationofthe populationofMalta,feelingassured thattheAugustPontiff,althoughhe knowsthemrightwellalready,will, allthesame,hearwithjoy,ofthe freshandpublicexpressionofthem.

WhentheReceptionCeremonywas over,thosewhohadassembledto takepartinitplacedthemselvesin processionalorder.ThePapalLegatewastomakehissolemnentranceonfootintoValletta,superblyadornedforthegrandoccasion.

Theapplausewhichhadunderlined thesalientpointsofHisEminence's noblereply,nowreachedtheclimax withtheutteranceofthelastwords. Fromthedensecrowdsinthestreets andfromthehundredswhothronged theroofsandbalconiesaroundthere cameloudcriesofindescribableenthusiasmwhichweimaginemust LavebeenheardbythecrowdsimpatientlyawaitingwithinPorta Reale.

Theloudapplausewhichfollowed theaddressofthelearnedanddist'neuishedjurist,JudgePullicino, 1,14.D.,affordedclearevidencethat hehadfaithfullyinterpretedthesentimentsoftheentirepopulation.

OnleavingSt..John'sthePapal LegateproceededtotheArchiepiscopal(Palaceamidstrenewedoutburetsofuncontrolledenthusiasm.

OntheFeastoftheSacredHeart theAnnualProcessionoftheBlessed SacramenttookplaceattheGood ShepherdConvent,Leederville.For weeksbeforepreparationshadbeen goingontocelebratetheFeastwith allpossiblepomp,everyoneaidingas faraslayintheirpowertomake everyplacecheeryandbright,and theirefforts,itmustbeadmitted, werecrownedwithmarvellousresults,forthechapel,cloister,and gardenwereconvertedintoaveritableParadise.Thisfeasthasalwayabeenlookedforwardtowith greatjoy,thisonefarsurpassing allothers.Thehandsome,spacious chapellatelyerectedaccountsina greatmeasureforthis.Devotions eoirmencedatanearlyhourbythe celebrationofaMissacantataMass bytheRev.Chaplain,Fr.O'Brien, thesingingofwhichwasmostdevotional,whilsttherenderingofthe differentpartsoftheMassbythe childrenofbothclassesinspired everyonewithmorethanusualfervour.AfterMasstheBlessedsacramentwasexposed,andmanyand fer,entwerethevisitspaidtothe VIIIofKin-s.Continualdrovesof "Hisdearones"couldbeseenflock

ingtowardsHimduringtheentire day,spendinghoursatatimein lowlyadoration.ThedecorationsI couldnotpassoverinsilence,thoughIfeelincapableofdoingample justicetotheSisters,whoseworkoh artdeservesthehighestpraise.Our Lord'sHomeofLovewasradiant withlightsandflowers,atecanopy beingintwinedwithasparagusfern andspraysofLilyoftheValley, whichwasverydainty,thesanctuary beinginterspersedwithbeautiful palmsandplants.Thecloister archesleadingfromthechoirwere verygracefullydraped aithlace hangings,relievedwithcrimsonand gold,andlojopedupwithribbonof thesameshadewhilstbellsofvar(m'shueshungfromthecentre of thearches.Atthehalldoomthere wasatriumphalarcherected,and others,throughthegarden.Thewalk alongwhichtheprocessionmarched waslined i.hbannerettesand scrollsandstatuesoftheSacred HeartandOurLady.Atfouro'clock -thehourfixedfortheProcessiontheclergyenteredthechoir.The VeryRev.Fr.Verling,V.G.,carried theRemonstrance,FathersCarroll andMoloneydeaconandsub-deacon, Fr.O'Brienmasterofceremonies, andFr.McCabecross-hearer,with theusualnumberofacolytesand thurifers.FatherLynch,Maylands, andtheVeryRev.Fr.-O'Donnell, RectoroftheliedemptoristMonastery,alsoFathersKellyandNolan, ('.SS.R.,whohadonlyjustarrived fromIreland,walkedintheprocession.Thecanopywascarriedbythe menemployedattheConvent,which theylookedonasagreatprivilege. Fourindustrialschoolchildrenhad thehappinessofstrewingflowersin OurLord'spathway.Astl.eprocessionmoved.slowlyalonghymnsof loveandthanksgivingrenttheair, andonreturningtothechapelsolemnBenedictionwasgiven.The palmswereagiftfromourkind benefactoress,Mrs.Chamberlain.
