Thelandisthepeople'sinthebest sense,viz.,thatitisnearlyalloccupiedandworkedbythem.Ninetenthsoftheinhabitantsaresupportedbytheproduceofthesoil. Thewholecountryisflourishing,eitherundercultivationyieldingrich andabundantproduce,orteeming withmanufactoriesandindustries.
WhereEnglandfeedsonecow,the Belgianfeedstwo,andeverysquare mileofarablelandsupports360 morepersonsthanEnglanddoes. 65percent.oftheagriculturalpopulationarefarmersand85percent. labourers,weareinformedbyMr. B.SeebohmRowntreeinhismasterlywork"LandandLabourLessons
whilstProtestantcivilisation,does thereverse.HowfarReligionenters inatalltobringaboutthismutt ismatterfordiscussion,butso farasreligiousinfluenceisintroducedintothequestionatallby Protestantcontroversialists,theargumenttellsmostpalpablyinfavour ofCatholicism.Hereareafew pointsforcomparison.Incountries whicharetrulyCatholic,moneyis moreequallyandwidelydistributed, andthelandissubdividedsoasto sustainthegreaterpartofthepeople.Youwillnotfindthesystemby which,asPopeI.eosaid,"asmall numberofveryrichmenhavebeen abletolayupontheteemingmasses ofthelabouringpoorayokelittle betterthanthatofslaveryitself." ThequarterlyConferenceoftheSt. VincentdePaulSocietywasheldat St.Anne'sChurch,NorthFremantle, lastSundayafternoon.Despitethe swelteringheat,therewereabout300 delegatesfromthevarious-metropolitanandsuburbanbranches,andthe deliberations werecommendably brief-awelcomeinnovationwhichwe hopetoseerepeatedatallfuture gatherings.Thevariousreports showedsustainedinterestinthe workofthisexcellentinstitution, foundedbythelateFrederickOzanam. Intheunavoidableabsenceofthe Rev.FatherNeville,0.M.I.,whoofficiatedatRottenestonSunday,the occasionaladdresswasdeliveredby theRev.J.Flynn,O.M.I.,whosaid: DearBrothersandSistersofthe St.VincentdePaulConference,-On behalfofthepeopleofFremantle,I wishtoextendtoyouaveryheartywelcomeonthisyoursecondvisit toFremantle.Itwasourprivilege tohavethefirstgeneralmeeting heldinFremantle,andoneimmediateresultwasthatourmembers tookuptheworkinawarm-hearted andgenerousspirit,madeafresh start,andworkedverysuccessfully afterwards.Ihavenodoubtthat oneoftheresultswillbeastrong andincreasingmembership.
IwasnotawarethatIwasto addressyouthisafternoonuntilcalleduponbythePresident,Mr.Wallace.FatherNevillewas,unfortunately,calledawayoutofFremantle thismorning,and,ofcourse,Iam totakehisplace.itisrathera revelationtometofindsuchalarge numberherethisafternooninlove ofthespiritofcharitywhichisso strongamongthemembersofthe SocietyofSt.VincentdePaul.With thethermometeratsuchahighregisterthisafternoon,Ihavenointentionoftrespassingonyourpatiencetoanyextent.Iwillmerely putbeforeyouafewthoughtson theforgivenessofinjuries.Wemust trytotramplethespiritofuncharitableness,andacquireforourselves, andinthoseamongwhomwework, thischaritableandforgivingspirit. Yourveryhappinessdependsonthat spiritofforgivingcharitablenessto enjoyeventhesweetsofthislife herebelow.Supposingoneperson speaksevilofanotherandthatthe personsooffendedburstsintoafit ofangerandrefusestoforgivehis neighbour,Isaythatpersonisnurs anginhisbosomaviperwhichwill certainlyinterferewithhistemporal r"andspiritualhappiness.Ifyour neighbourspokeuncharitablyofyou andsomeonewishingtoperforma charitableoffice,returnedthisto you,inallprobabilityyouwould riseupinaheatofpassion,and storeupinyourmindabitterresentmentagainstthepersonwhoof!endedyou,andyourheartishardened,yourmindhasnopeace,you canfindnohappiness.Theonlyway youcanfindhappinessistoforgive thatperson,andtopassoverwhat hesaid.Thereisanotherreason taughtbyourHolyReligionwhywe shouldtrytoacquirethatforgivingspirit-your

wearethechildrenofGod,andwe arethebrothersofChrist.Wecall ourselvessuch,andsoweare.Ican safelyassumethatwehaveallsinned,tosomeextent,andinsome -wayoffendedGod,butAlmightyGod hasforgivenus,andhasshownno bitternessinHisheart.Hecould havevisiteduswithinstantdeath, butwhatdoeshedo?Heallows "thesuntoshineuponthejustand unjust,"andheallowsthedewof Heaventofalluponthegodlyand ungodly.
DuringtheholyseasonofLentthe churchcallsonustomeditateuponthenhraseswhichfellfromthe sacredlipsofourLord,whenhe
exclaimedtothethiefontheCross, "Thisdaythoushaltbewithmein Paradise."WealsofindHimanimatedwiththespiritofforgiving charitablenessinthelastwords thatfellfromHissacredlips,"Father,forgivethem,forthey,know notwhattheydo."Ifwe,then, wishtobetruemembersoftheSocietyofSt.VincentdePaul,we mustthenforgiveourenemies.Let ustakethecaseofapersonwho hassinnedgreviously,andthatpersonthroughsomeunaccountablereasonfeelshimselfcalledbacktorepentance,thefirststephetakesis tocallouourHeavenlyFatherto forgivehimhissins,asheforgives thosethattrespassagainsthim. Howthenarewetoexpectforgivenessofoursinsifwedonotforgivethosewhooffendus. OurDivineLordtellsusthatif youcometothealtartooffersacrificeandthererememberthatyou havesomethingagainstyourbrother,youshouldfirstgoandobtain pardonfromyourbrother.Wewould beaveryexcellentSocietyWeedif wehadnoimperfections.'Thereisa verystrongspiritofcharitableness andforgivenessprevailingamongthe membersofSt.Vincentde"aulSociety,andwemustendeavourto propagatethisspiritamongthose withwhomwework.

At9o'clocktheceremonycommencedbytheblessingoftheChurch withoutandwithin.ThenMasswas celebratedandduringtheservice DeanSmythdeliveredthededicatoryaddress,takingforhistext, "IwillsetmyTabernacleinthe midstofyouandshallnotcastyou off.Iwillwalkamongyouand youshallbemypeopleandIshall
beyourGod."Thesewords,the preachersaid,expressedthedeepsolicitudeofGodforhischosenpeople longbeforethedawnofChristianity, andthey,areequallyapplicabletodayinthehappycircumstancesin whichtheywereassembled.The sameGodwhospokethustothe -Jewsspokealsotothemandasked themforaTabernaclewhereHe mightmeetthemandsanctifythem, andpreachtothemHisheavenly doctrine,andforgivethemtheir sinsandfortifythemwiththe BreadofAngels,andtheyhadrepliedbyerectingthatsubstantial structurewhichhehaddedicathdand whichwassanctifiedthatdaybythe presenceoftheLordJesusChrist. Theycouldscarcelyunderstand,he said,whatasourceofjoyitwas toapriest(oreventoanyonewho recognisedthedogmasofChristianityandtherightGodhadto theadorationandhomageofhumanaffections)toseeanewChurch openedforthegloryofGodand theuseofthefaithful.Theywould rejoicebecauseanewChurchbespeaksandguaranteestheexpansion andextensionoftheworshipof God.Theyshouldrejoicebecausea newaltarwasbuilt,onwhichthe VictimofCalvary!wouldbeoffered toGodasthehighestactofhomagethatcanbeofferedonearthor inHteaven-toGodtheacknowledgmentofHissovereigndominion,to GodingratitudeforHisboundless mercies,toGodasaSacrificeof Expiationandpropitiationfortheir sins.Theyshouldrejoice,moreover, becauseanewrestingplacehad beenbuilt,whereGodwouldmeet andwelcomehisloyalanddevoted followers,givinglighttotheirdarkness,solacetotheirsorrows,and strength,enlightenmentandencouragementtothosewhowerestaggeringundertheyokeandburdenofHisTenCommandments.They shouldrejoicebecauseanewchair ofTruthhadbeenestablishedin theirmidst,whereGod'spure law,whichisalamptotheirfeet guidingthemarightevenintoHeaven'sgate,wouldbepreachedto themwithitstremendoussanctions ofeternalreward,andeternaland unspeakablepunishments.Anew Churchguaranteesthesystematicadvancementofreligion,acontinuous streamofgrace,and,indeed,an advanceofholinessamongstthepeople.ThatChurchrecallsallthe DivinepromisesthatJesusChrist madetoHisoneandonlyinfant ChurchwhenHeinstituteditnearly 2,000yearsago,andcommissionedit todoHisworkmathesalvationof soulsuntotheendoftheworld;and whentheysawtheMasscelebrated andheardtheGospelpreachedand hadtheirsinsforgiven,didthey notfeeltheirfaithstrengthencil, theirhopeandcharityexpanded. Theyfelthowmuchnearerwasthe Saviour,andthattheywerehia,do mestics,builtonthefoundationof theApostlesandMartyrs-Jesus ChristHimselfbeingtheCorner Stone.
Itwasoncesaidbyanillustrious writer.inaliteraturethatbristles withillustriousnames,"Thatthere isnotnow,andneverhasbeen,any institutionsoworthyofexamination astheCatholicChurch."Thetrue Catholicrevelsinthehistoryofher victoriesanddefeats,hertriumphs, andherfailures,herjoysandher sorrowsforthepasttwothousand yearsthephilosophicalstudent probesherineveryway,tofind outifhecanthesecretofherunendingpermanencyandstabilityamongsttheceaselessvicissitudesand sourcesofdisintegrationanddecay. Andthecultivatedmanwondersat theachievementsofhersonsand daughtersinthewidedomainsofArt, ScienceandLiterature.Theyall havereadofnationsandpeoples thathaverisenandruledandTertithed,andsheremainsthepeerless Queenasfreshandvigorousasever --notamererelicorantiquarynot inthedecrenitudeofsenility,hut asauthoritative.inteaching,asenterprisinginthespreadoftheGos-
pelandtheCrossasshewasinthe heydayofMahomet,orinthewildestdaysoftheReformation.Let thembutreadherhistory,andthoughtheymaymagnifythefaultsof thePopesuntiltheynauseate,they wouldbeforcedtoadmitthather Popesandherpriestshave1.een thechiefagentsofcivilisation,the creatorsofunityinEurope,thepromotersoftheartsandsciences,the destroyersofslavery,theoriginatorsofcivilliberty,theemancipators ofwoman,andtheuncompromising defendersoftherightsofthelabouringman.

AgoodrepresentationoftheGeneralCommitteemetattheBishop's PalaceonMondayeveningwiththe Vicar-General(VeryRev.Father Verling)inthechair.Thesecretary, Mr.Dowd,readtheminutesofthe previousmeeting,whichwereconfirmed.Correspondencewasreadfrom twoFremantleBandsofferingtheir services.Discussionensued,and eventuallyitwasagreedthatquo- tationsbecalledforfromallthe bandswithinthemetropolitanarea, suchquotationstobereferredtothe FinanceCommittee.TheSecretary wasinstructedtocallfortenders forthepurchasingofboothrights onthegroundsfortheday.
