Thecommercialworldisjustnow beginningtorealisethepossibilities ofundevelopedPapua;itssoilpromisestosupplywithrubberandcopraandhempthebestandbiggest markets.Moreover,itsoil,itscopper,itsgoldresourcesseeminexhaustible.Butthereisyetanother wealthinPapua.Foroverathird ofacentury,ithasbeenexploited byvaliantmenandwomen-herethey havegatheredthetreasurewhich "neitherthemothnortherustdoth consume."
Theoldseekersaftertheseincorruptiblerichesarefastdyingoutothersmusttaketheirplace.
Therehasbeenaconsecrationof newworkers,soIamgivenanopportunitytoputbeforeyourreaders someideaofanordinationceremony inthesewildregions.
Theceremonytookplacein thePro-Cathedral,YuleIsland, onthe'22ndDecember.TheCathedralismodestbothinsize andadornment,forthismissionfromamaterialpointof viewisoneofthepoorest. Thereis,however,aspacious sanctuary,whichappearsaltogetheroutofproportionwiththe remainderofthebuilding.Itis veryprobablethatthelate ArchbishopNavarre,whenadoptingtheplans,foresawthe daywhenthenoblestceremoniesof00D'SHOLYCHURCH wouldtakeplaceinhishumble Cathedral.
Thecathedralwasbeautifullydecorated.TheHighAltaragifttothemission a daughterofFrance-isofcarvedwood.Thereareexecuted artisticallyuponitmanyfiguressymbolicaloftheHoly Sacrifice.Onthetopisapedestal,supportingalargestatueofi,urLadyoftheSacred Heart..TheAltar,withits statue,alreadymajestic,was ta,flief:llyadorned.Decorating couldheseenadevoutbut,aged nun.sisterMadeline,ofwhom Iwrite,isnowseventy-two(72) yearsold.Shehasbeentwentysix(26)yearsonthemission. Hergreatestearthlyioyisto preparetheAltarfortheHoly Sacrifice.TheReverendMotherSebastian,withherdevotedCommunityofSisters,did muchtohelponthepreparations.

TheyoungLevites,theReverend FathersBaileyandMcCarthy,were solemnlyconsecratedpriests,with thatpompanddignityandreverencesocharacteristicofsuchfunctions.
Immediatelyaftertheordination, thereisatouchingscene.TheConsecratorkneelsbeforetheconsecrated.HisLordshipDr.deBoismenu, seeksthefirstblessing.Hekisses devoutlythehandshehasafew minutesbeforeannointed.Thepriests thebrothers,thesisterspressforward fortheyoungpriests'blessings.Next comeaboutfivehundredPapuansyoungandold-menandwomenand children.Theyseektheconsecrated handswithareverencethataugurs

AssoonasI hearofyour'ordinationIwillsing my'Nunndimittis.'andyou,my dearson,askpermissionfromyour Superiortosayamassforyour Pooroldfather'ssoul."
TheVeryReverendFatherChabot, M.S.C.,assistedFatherMcCarthyat hisfirstMass.Hehasjustretired fromtheSuneriorshipoftheMission.AsSuperiorbewonthelove andtherespectofhissubjects.For
Priesthood,heenteredtheMissionaryCollegeoftheSacredHeartFathers,Kensington,Sydney.After finishinghisstudies,hewaschosen forthePapuanMission.
FatherBaileyhadtoassisthimat hisfirstMasstheVeryReverendFatherVitalli,M.S.C.Onehasbutto speakwiththiszealousmissionary toatoncefeelthatheisinthepresenceof"homoDEI."FatherVitalli wasbornonthe8thMarch,1866,at Gildone,intheProvinceofCampobasso.Heis,therefore,asonofthe dioceseofBenevento,intheSouthof Italy.Ayoungmanof22,helanded inSydneyonthe6th,-August,1888. Madesub-deaconanddeaconatthe ChurchofOurLadyoftheSacred Heart,Randwick,Sydney,heproceededtoThursdayIsland,where,on
Papua'smuchlovedandlearned Bishop,theRightReverendDr.de Boismenu,had,asanassistant,the VeryReverendG.Desnoes,VicarGeneraltheReverendP.Branger, M.S.('.,wasMasterofCeremonies. HisLordship,whohasbeenrecruitedforChrist'sApostolatefromthe Frencharistocracy,bringstotheexerciseofhissacredofficethatgrace bywhichthenoble('atholicfamilies ofEuropearesodistinguished.
TheVicar-General,theVeryReverendG.Desnoes,M.S.('.,wasfor manyyearsaProfessorinChetalBenoitandinIssoudun(France),and alsoinCanetdeMar(Spain).He couldnotresistadesiretowork fortheconversionoftheinfidel. SoonafterhisarrivalinPapua,His LordshipDr.deBoismenurecognised thathehadinhimaprudent,a sealonsandalearnedmissionary. FatherDesnoes'appointmentas Vicar-generalwasbutanotheradvancewiththearduousworkofextendingandadministeringadiffi cult,ission.
Onthe8thDecemberlasthewas electedSuperioroftheMission-a
wellforthefutureCatholicityof theseparts. ThefirstMasseswerecelebratedin theCathedralonthefollowing morning. Achoirofaboutforty voicesrendered,amongothernumbers,thatbeautifulFrenchhymn, "0SaintAutel."Whatathrillwent throughtheCathedralasthefull cl.virtistookupthisravishingrefrain

TheReverendFatherMcCarthy, M.S.C.,wasbornatFingal,Tasmania,onthe6thMarch,1884.Hisearlyeducationwasentrustedtothe SistersofSaintloseph,Zeehan, and,later,totheChristianBrothers,Ballarat.TheReverendBernard Marphy,P.P.,Zeehan,andthat1.61y andwellknownRedemptoristMissionary,theReverendFatherIlegarty,werethefirsttodetecthisvo-
manyyearshewasasecularpriest inFrance,but,beingconvincedof thescarcityofworkersamongthe infidels,heenteredtheranksofthe MissionariesoftheSacredHeart, Eversincehehastakenaleading partinthePapuanMission.Itwas hewho,withFathersEgidiandFillodeau,exploredsomeoftheroughestcountryinPapua.Oneofthe manygreatanddaringfeatsofthe partywastoscaletoavillageon thetopofMountEyssautier,9,900 feethigh.FatherChabotisanintrepidmissionary.Hehashad,on hisexpeditions,manysleeplessnights becauseofthetreacheryofthenatives.However,intheriskshehas takenhehasalwaysreliedonabenighProvidence.
Theotheryoungpriest,theReverendFatherBailey,M.S.C.,isanativeofNewZealand.Hewasborn inAucklandonthe27thJanuary, IRRO. T-Tieearlystudiesweremade undertheMaristBrothersofthat city.For,someyearsheledabusinesslife,andtookanactivepartin the1iicklandCatholicYoungMen's LiterarySociety.Calledtothe
that14thOctoberofthesameyearhe wasadmittedtothepriesthoodby thelateArchbishopNavarre.Father VitalliisatypicalItalian.His zeal,throughoutanextensiveparish, haswonforhimthelovelandreverenceofhisPapuans.Visithimin hisparish,ofBeipa,andhewillpoint tothedifferentnativesthathebaptised,eitherintheirinfancyor youth,andwhosespiritualgrowthis everhisfirstcare.Hehashadthe consolationofpreparingmanyofhis childrenfordeath.Hisgreatestjoy istorecountthosewhomhesawdie fortifiedwiththelastSacramentsof theChurch.Twenty-fiveyearshehas labouredamongthePapuans,and thewholeofthistimehehasnever beenfartberthantwentymilesfrom hisparishchurch.Askhimabout PortMoresby,thecapitaloftheterritory,andhewillreply"Ihave neverseenPortMoresby."Askhim, ashissuperiorsoftenhavedone,to recuperateinEurope,andhewillanswerwithasmile:"Beipaismy Europe."

Ourreaderswillrememberacorrespondenceinthe"WestAustralian"lastyearbetweenMr.Prowee, theGrandMasteroftheOrange Lodge,andMr.M.O'Dea,theNationalPresidentoftheHibernian SocietyinAustraliaandNewZealand.itwasprovedconclusively thatnoattackhadbeenmadeonthe womenandchildrenattendingthe picnic;butthatdidnotprevent Prowse'sfriendsfromreiterating thecalumny.Thematterwasfurtherventilatedinaletterwhichappearedlastmonthinthe"WestAustralian"fromthepenofoneRobert.H.H.Baird,Belfast.Bythelast EnglishmailwereceivedthefullreportofthetrialheldbeforeChristmas,withJudgeWright'ssumming up.Followingisaclippingfromthe "DublinFreeman"ofDec.28:-

Therealimportanceofthetrialis lessintheactualresultthan inthelightthatitthrows uponthemethodsofUnionistsandtheirpropaganda.TheCastledawsonriotwasmadetheexplanation,ifnotthejustification,ofthe brutaloutragesperpetratedlastJu1 upontheBelfastworkersinthe shipyards.ItwasusedbytheUnionistleaderstostirtheirfollowers topassionandfrenzyandtoblackenthecharacteroftheNationalists of'Ulsterbeforetheworld.The HouseofCommonswasthecentre whencetodiffusethecalumnytothe endsoftheearth.Theriot,itwill beremembered,wasdescribedas-to quotethe"IrishTimes"caption-"anattackuponProtestantschool children."MrJohnGordon,K.C.,summedupalltheinfamyintheallegationsbyaquestionintheHouseof Commons."EsthisHousetounderstand,"heasked,"thattheparty attackedwasabodyoffivehundred Sundayschoolchildrengoingoutfor afete?Weretheyattackedbythree hundredNationalists,able-bodied men,whowerearmedwithbludgeons andpikes,anddidtheystabandseriouslyinjurethechildren;wasone oftheobjectsoftheattacktotake theUnionJackfromthehandsofa boywhowasstabbedwhentheflag wasinhishands,andwasitnota factthatnoadultpersoninanyway interferredwiththeHiberniansor didanythinguntilthepolicecame todispersethem,whentheyrenderedassistancetothepoliceasall loyalsubjectsshould?"Mr.Birrell whenattemptingtoanswerthequestionwasinterruptedbytheelegant EarlWintertonwiththeexclamation:
"Thereisnoexcuseforstabbing children;"andMr.Moorewantedto knowwhy,"havingregardtothe recordsoftheHibernians,he(Mr. Birrell)didnotprovideanadequate forcetogiveprotectiontothose children."Movingtheadjournment, thesamenobleEarldeclaredthat"a partyoftheAncientOrderofHiberniansmadeawantonandunproiekedattackuponadefencelesspartyofSundayschoolchildrenat hismindwiththoughtsofajourney -butitisthejourneyfromwhence notravellerreturns.

THEJUDGE'SSUMMINGUP.
Allthesestatementsareshownby theproceedingsatthetrialtobe vileandgroundlessslanders.Yetit wasbysuchstatementsthatthe feelingwhichburstforthintheshipyardoutrageswasfomented.The "NorthernWhig"publishedaninterviewwiththeRev.Mr.Barron,the clergymanwholedtheexcursion,the dayaftertheincident."Inever," saidthereverendgentleman,"had suchaterribleexperience.Withus wasa(manwhohad.beenthrough theSouthAfricanWar,andhetold mehehadneverseenanythingso savagerightthroughthecampaign." Heneversawanythingliketheattackonthechildren WhenexaminedinCourthewasproceedingto justifythestatementwhentheJudge askedhim"Didyouseeanyinjuriesonthechildren?"'Pheanswer was"Isawinjuriesonthemen.'' Notonepoliceman,thoughtheywere allaskedthequestion,sawawomanorchildstruckorinjured.Uponthischarge,whichwastheonly chargethatdistinguishedthecase fromthatofanyofthetrumpery quarrelswithwhichtheNorth-East ofUlsterisannuallydisgraced,the Judge'ssummingupisi;nul."He wasgladtoknow,"heslid,"that womenandchildrenhadnotbeen struckwithpikes.Hedidnotknow whetherthenewspapershadheaded theirreportsofthisaffairasan attackuponwomenandchildren.'He wasgladtosayhedidnotreadany ofthem.Atanyratewhathadbeen absolutelyprovedinthatCourtwas that

lybaseduponlying,lyingnotabout humblepeasantsbutabouteverybodyofnameandreputeinIreland whodoesnotagreewiththem,that theexposureofthelieshasreduced theircausetoruins.Thestory thattheHiberniansofCastledawson stabbedthelittleexcursionflag-bearerisofthesamemintingasthestorythatIrishNationalismisthe maskthathidesthepersecutor.It carriesthesamestampasthefiction spreadbroadcastamongthethrifty
TheAustralianProvinceofthe MissionariesoftheSacredHeart,by givingtwoofitsalumni,theReverendFathersMcCarthyandBailey,to theinfidelmission,hasmarkedan epochinitsprogress.Asadconsequenceofthecruel,religiouspersecutioninFrancewastocutoffthe supplyofpriestsfortheforeignmission.ButGod,inHisgoodness, seemstodestinetheAustralianProvincetomeritfromthePapuanMissionarewardwhichFranceappears nolongerworthyof.ItistheardentwishofHisLordshipDr.deBoismenuthatAustralianPriestsshould sharefullyintheworkofhismission.FromhimAustralianPriests receiveawarmwelcome.HerealisestheneedofAustralianPrieets toassisttocarryonaworksov.ell begun,andsofullofhonefitthe spreadoftheCatholieFaith.
Thusthestatementthatsix monthsagowasusedintheBelfast UnionistPressandonthefloorof theHouseofCommonstoarouse vindictivepassionamongtheOrange workersinBelfast,isnowroundly denouncedbytheJudgefromthe Benchas"alie."The"lie"was publishedonthemorningafterthe occurrenceintheBelfastUnionist Papers.Theriotsbrokeoutthe nextday.The"lie"wasrepeated withcircumstanceintheHouseof Commonsthedayafter..dr.John GordonandtheEarlWintertondescribedthe"stabliing"ofthechildren.WhenthereportsoftheproceedingsinParliamentreachedBelfasttheriotsextended."ThePenians"andProtestantHomeRulers wereclearedout.WhenMr.Devlin onJuly4thdenouncedthesavage attacksupontheCatholicandLiberalProtestantworkers,Mr.'lades Craigrepeatedthe"lie"inexplanationoftheoutrages.The"lie"figuredinseveraloftheHomeRule debates.Onaccountofthe"lie" severalhumbleworkers'homeshave beenbrokenupinBelfastandtheir membersscatteredtotheendsofthe earth.Butthedisseminatorsofthe liewillnotbeintheleastshamed. Iftheyfindasgoodanopportunity forinflamingpassionandproducing disorderwhentheTillyheatsaffect theNorth-EastCornertheywillstill befoundastackles..TheUlsterUnionistpropagandai. beensolarge-

Theindustrialwarisragingall aboutus.Thestrifebetweenhonest labourandtheoppressionofcapital isbecomingdailymorebitterand moreacute.Theconflictwhichtwo decadesagobishopsandpriests warnedcapitaliststheywereprecipitatingbytheirrefusingtoacknowledgetherightsoftheworkingmenisuponthenation. Strikes, deedsofviolence,-andevenmurder, tillthedailypapers.
Whoisresponsibleforit?Arethey whoformtl.emobs,whoblindlyfollowtheagitators.No.Itisthe formulatorsofthedangerousideas thatarebeingflightedintothe workingman'smind.
Howtruearethewordsofthe greatapostleofsocialreform,that greatGermanleaderoftheworkingman,BishopVonKetteler,wholays theblamewhereitbelongsina magnificentfuneralorationoverthe conservativeleadersmurderedin Frankfortin1848.
Andtheyareastimelyto-dayas theywerewhentheyflowedinthe whiteheatofeloquencefromthe mouthofthegreatBishop,whosaid:

TheConventSchoolisagainopen, andbothteachersandaupilscanhe seenwithanaoparentoatnatinal reluctancewendingtheirnaystothe oldfamiliarschoolroom,.Oh,the
