Theiratholicboyswereexpectedto heamongstthehestoftheircitizens, andtoheeverloyalandpatriotic. Henoticedthefirstvocalitemon theprogrammewas"WewillFight forOurAustralia."Yes,theChristianBrothersweretrainingtheir boysnotonlytoheexcellentcitizenshuttrainingthemalsotohe preparedtogoouttotightforthe honouroftheircountry,andyetthat AkIstralia,whichthoseboysdeclare theywouldfightanddiefor,inits educationalpolicynotonlyin Queensland,butineveryoneofthe :-tatesoftheCommonwealth,was actin;averymeanparttowardsher ownchildren. Atabout10.30o'clockonthemorningofDec.21st,Pansy,the16 Year-olddaughterofMr..1.Daniels, contractor,ofCunderdin,formerlyof Bayswater,wasmissedbyheremployer,Mrs.Simmons,oftheConderdinPostOffice.Amessengerwas despatchedtotheparents,withthe objectofascertainingwhethershe hadgonehome,butthereplywas inthenegative.Feelingsomewhat uneasy,Mr.Danielsorganiseda searchparty,andaboutanhourlaterhistwoyoungerdaughtersdiscoveredthebodyoftheirsisterfloatingfacedownwardsintheG.W.S. damsomethree-quartersofamile fromthetownship.Mr.Donovan divestedhimselfofhisclothing,divedinandrecoveredthebody,which wasconveyedtothetown.

ThetimelyandwatchfulcareofMr McDonnellhassecuredthisgreatadvantagetotheIrishcommunityin Queensland.
ForoncetheDenhamGovernment werewiseintheirgeneration,forit isgenerallyrecognisedthathadthey notwithagoodgracerecognisedtheirpositioninthisparticularcase therewouldhavebeenabattleroyal overthequestion.EvidentlyPre-mierDenhamandhiscautiouscolleaguesdidnotcaretoagaintackle thelegitimacyofSt.Patrick'sDay asapublicholiday,havingreceived suchaseverekeel-haulingoverthe samematterduringthepassageof theindustrialPeaceBill.Itisremarkable,indeed,that.thisparticu- larmeasure-theHolidaysBill-went throughtheLegislativeAssembly withoutany,noticebeingtakenof thisveryseriousdefect,ofthisseriousblowatthecloseobservanceof st.Petrick'sDayasaholidayby theshop-keepers.Nowthematteris definitelysettled,andbeyondall doubtSt.Patrick'sDayisaclose
publicholiday,despitethefactthat thatdayiscutoutoftheIndustrial PeaceBill.Onlybyceaselessvigilancecansafetybesecured.TheHon.
