Hewouldrepeatwhathehadsaid onprevirasoccasions--thatitwas verydifficIDtounderstandhowthe Governmentofthecountrycouldignoreaneducationalestablishment srwilasthat,inasmuchasitwould notgrantonepennypiecetowards forwarding.theworkitwasdoing. Theiratholicboyswereexpectedto heamongstthehestoftheircitizens, andtoheeverloyalandpatriotic. Henoticedthefirstvocalitemon theprogrammewas"WewillFight forOurAustralia."Yes,theChristianBrothersweretrainingtheir boysnotonlytoheexcellentcitizenshuttrainingthemalsotohe preparedtogoouttotightforthe honouroftheircountry,andyetthat AkIstralia,whichthoseboysdeclare theywouldfightanddiefor,inits educationalpolicynotonlyin Queensland,butineveryoneofthe :-tatesoftheCommonwealth,was actin;averymeanparttowardsher ownchildren. Atabout10.30o'clockonthemorningofDec.21st,Pansy,the16 Year-olddaughterofMr..1.Daniels, contractor,ofCunderdin,formerlyof Bayswater,wasmissedbyheremployer,Mrs.Simmons,oftheConderdinPostOffice.Amessengerwas despatchedtotheparents,withthe objectofascertainingwhethershe hadgonehome,butthereplywas inthenegative.Feelingsomewhat uneasy,Mr.Danielsorganiseda searchparty,andaboutanhourlaterhistwoyoungerdaughtersdiscoveredthebodyoftheirsisterfloatingfacedownwardsintheG.W.S. damsomethree-quartersofamile fromthetownship.Mr.Donovan divestedhimselfofhisclothing,divedinandrecoveredthebody,which wasconveyedtothetown.

AninquestwassubsequentlyopenedattheCunderdinHotel,before Mr..Pemberton, acting-Coroner,andajury,andafterformalevidencehadbeengiven,adjournedfor severdays.

'rhefuneral,whichwaswellattended,tookplaceonSunday,theremainsbeingconveyedbyroadfrom CunderdintoMeckering.

APUBLICHOLIDAYINQUEENSLAND.

ThetimelyandwatchfulcareofMr McDonnellhassecuredthisgreatadvantagetotheIrishcommunityin Queensland.

ForoncetheDenhamGovernment werewiseintheirgeneration,forit isgenerallyrecognisedthathadthey notwithagoodgracerecognisedtheirpositioninthisparticularcase therewouldhavebeenabattleroyal overthequestion.EvidentlyPre-mierDenhamandhiscautiouscolleaguesdidnotcaretoagaintackle thelegitimacyofSt.Patrick'sDay asapublicholiday,havingreceived suchaseverekeel-haulingoverthe samematterduringthepassageof theindustrialPeaceBill.Itisremarkable,indeed,that.thisparticu- larmeasure-theHolidaysBill-went throughtheLegislativeAssembly withoutany,noticebeingtakenof thisveryseriousdefect,ofthisseriousblowatthecloseobservanceof st.Petrick'sDayasaholidayby theshop-keepers.Nowthematteris definitelysettled,andbeyondall doubtSt.Patrick'sDayisaclose

publicholiday,despitethefactthat thatdayiscutoutoftheIndustrial PeaceBill.Onlybyceaselessvigilancecansafetybesecured.TheHon. FrankMcDonnellmeritstheunanimousthanksofthecommunityforthe tirelessalertnesswithwhichheresistedanindubitablepublicright beingwrestedfromthepeoplebya prejudiced,andshort-sightedGovernment.

Isittoomuchtoexpectthatour ownWestAustralianParliamentwill followthegoodexampleofthe QueenslandLegislaturenextsession? Surelythereshouldbeasufficiently strongelementinHarvestTerrace tobringaboutthisadmirableresult.

Wisdomconsistsnotinknowing manythings,noreveninknowing themthoroughly,butinchoosingand infollowingwhatconducesthemost certainlytoourlastinghappiness andglory.

TheConventpupilsannualconcertintheConventSchooltook placeonWednesdaynight,December11th,andasusualwas abigsuccess.Althoughthe ConventSchoolhadrecentlybeenconsiderablyenlargedtherewas apackedhouserightupto thedoor.Theprogrammewas carriedoutwithoutahitch,and, judgingfromtheheartyapplause thatgreetedeachsuccessiveitem, thelargeaudiencewaswell-pleased withthewell-trainedpupils'performance.

Anotheroldabandonedleadmine, theUga,hasbeenleasedbyMr.S. Laffen.Thisoldmine,situatedabout amileS.W.ofthetownship,was oneofthefirstminesopenedontheNorthamptonmineralbelt,and was ableworkedatvarioustimesforpayore.

MonsignorPhelanhasbeenassociatedwiththe"AustralLight"since itsfoundationin1892.Forthefirst eightyearsheoccupiedtheposition ofcensor.In1900,whentheArchbist.optookoverthepublication,he wasappointedbyhisGraceChairmanoftheEditorialCommittee,and hestillfillsthatpost.TheMonsignorisagoodjudgeofmen,and.betterstill-knowshowtohandle them.Inproofofthis,itmaybe saidthatthepriestsandlaymenwho joinedtheDeanin1900arestill workingwithhim,'andthemostharmoniousrelationshavealwaysexisteda.nongstthem.OncetheMonsignorhasprovedhis'men,histrustin then-.isunbounded.Heisalways readytolistentoargument,andhis mindiseveropentoconviction.He c.-rdiallyinvites,andwishestohave the...pinionofmenoftheworldon mattersaffectingChurchpolity. HisfirststationwasatEssendon, undertheRev.D.B.Nelan.TheEssendondistrictincludestheoutlying hamletsofKeilor,Broadmeadows, andBulla.HeretheMonsignorlabouredassiduouslyforfouryears, winningtheaffectionandesteemof allintheparish.FromEssendonhe wastransferred,in1892,toSt.Brigid's,NorthFitzroy,ascurateto theVeryRev.T.Lynch.Peculiarly enough,ontheMonsignor'slast visittoIreland,in1905,hisshipmatesonthe"Mongolia"wereFathersNelanandLynch.
