ThefifthannualentertainmentgivenbytheboardersofSt.Gertrude'spriortobreaking-upformidsummerholidays,tookplaceinthe spaciousmusichalloftheCollegeon Saturdayevening,14thinst.,and viewedfromeveryaspect,wasa mostbrilliantandpronouncedsuccess.
Theprogramme,ofavariedcharacter,andlasting,withoutinterval, for2khours,wascarriedthrough frombeginningtoendwithouthitch ormistake.Fromthedotoffour yearsinfront,stealingaglance acrosshershouldersatherseniors, tomakesureshewasintimeand harmonythroughoutthevarious manoeuvres,totheyoungladyof18 summersofgracefulandfinished training,onefeltpuzzledwhomto admiremost;buteveryonecontributedtothemakingupofamost fascinatingpicture.
Theexcellentappearanceofsucha largebodyofyoungladyboarders, tothenumberof110,humanpictures ofhealthandhappiness,faultlessly attiredinsnowysummercostume, livingemblemsofcomelinessandvirtue,atoncegainedtheadmiration andsympathyoftheaudience. A gentlemanonlysomemonthsout fromEnglanddeclaredhedidn't expecttoseesuchasightinAustralia.
Buttheadmirationoftheaudience wasnotconfinedtolooksorappearance.Thegoodimpressionsmadein thisdirectionwerefullysustained throughoutthewholepieceindeclamation,acting,andinmusic,both vocalandinstrumental.Wewere notperhapspreparedforasmuchas weheardandsawforwegoto theseschoolentertainmentswiththe ideauppermostthatwearetolistentoherinners,tochildren,andto makecomparisons.Well,weheard childrenatSt.Gertrude's,andwe honestlybelievewecouldnothear betterandwecouldlisten,andlistenon,obliviousofthehours,to
thosecharmingchildren-thoseangelswithhumanbodies,trainedafterthemanneroftheangelicchoirs - -theiryoungheartsmodelledand fashionedtothewaysofpurityand truth,ofinnocenceandlove.And here,alas!wenoticethesaddepartureofthepurelysecularState schoolsystem-thatourCatholic Conventschoolsthroughoutarethe nurseriesandseminariesofangels, topraiseandglorifyGod'sHoly nameonearthandqualifythemselvesforadmissionintotheangelic chorusofHeaven.Thisisnota merepictureoftheConventSchool, norafigmentoftheimagination, butatruism,areality.
ButtheaudienceatSt.Gertrude's wereprivilegedtomorethanachildren'streat.Theseniorgirlsgave anexcellentaccountofthemselves, andmadeabrilliantdisplay,dispellingatonceallideaoftheschool girlandbringingthefinishedartiste tothefrontthusfurnishingadditionalproofofthesplendidcapabilitiesoftheAustralianyounglady, whenherlinesarecastinfavourable waters.
TheSistersofSt.Josephofthe SacredHeart,undertheirprudent andgiftedSuperior,SisterJulia,deservethehighestpraiseforthe splendidtrainingoftheirgirls,and moreparticularlyforthehighest, holiest,andbestofalltraining,the trainingoftheirhearts.
Theentertainmentconcluded,BishopTorres,O.S.B.,whohasbuilt, furnished,andequippedthisCollege, inastylesecondtononeinAustralia,solelyathisownandhiscommunity'sexpense,presided,anddistributedmanyvaluableprizes,certificatesofmeritfromthevarious Colleges,andfivegoldandsilver medalsprovidedatHisLordship's ownexpense,tothemostdeserving rirlc,ofWhathasnowbecomea greatinstitutionoflearning-between60and70passesinmusicalone for1912.BishopTorreshasreason toheproudofthisgreatanddeservingundertaking,whichhascost himsomuch.Thefollowingisa programmeoftheentertainment Duet,"CanaryBirdQuadrilles,"

OnSunday,December15,atthe HomeofPeace,Subiaco,death claimedanoldcolonistinthepersonofMrs.MaryHayes,lateof PortAdelaide,S.A.,andmotherof Mrs.P.McKechnie,ofHighgateHill. Mrs.HayeswasbornofIrishparentsatMerthyrTydvil,Wales,76 yearsago,andcameouttoPort Adelaideattheendoftheyear 1854.Sheafterwardslivedforsome yearsatRobe,S.A.,butsubsequentlyreturnedtoAdelaide.Asanold colonist,Mrs.Hayeshadmanymemoriesoftheearlypioneeringdays andthehardshipsofthoselivingin the"hush."Shewaswellacquaintedwithmanyoftheold"bushmissionaries"ofthosedays; notably FatherTennisonWoods,Founderof theSistersofSt.JosephoftheSacredHeart,ofwhomsheoftenspoke intermsofspecialadmiration. Mrs.HayescametoW.A.about twoyearsago,accomnanyingher daughterandson-in-lawandher twograndsons.Aboutsixmonths nensheenteredtheHomeofPeace,
sufferingfromcancer,andaftera lingeringillnesspassedawaypeacefullyonSunday,December15.Her funeraltookplacequietlyonthe followingday.

Elsewhereinthisissuewereprint aletteroverthenameof"Catholicus,"whichappearedlastweekin the''WestAustralian."Itisnotthe firsttimeourleadingmorningjournalhasopeneditscolumnstoanonymous,criticsoftheCatholic Churchanditsworks.Hencetheappearanceofthemisleadingscreed didnotoccasionmuchsurprise. Whatdidsurpriseus,however,was thefact,thattheEditorofthe "WestAustralian"didnotmake someenquirybeforecommittingto coldprintacorrespondencewhich,if true,wouldcastaseriousreflection onthecharacteroftheBishopof Perth.Ourreaderswillnoticethat elevendayselapsedfromthedate ofthelettertothetimeofitsappearanceinthe"West."Henceno excusecanbepleadedasajustifying causeforsuchawantonlibel.The insultwascoldanddeliberate.
Asacontrast,tosuchjournalistic tactics,wemaymentionthatlast year,whenaninmateoftheClaremontAsylumsentalettertothe "SundayTimes"reflectingonBishop
Clune,theEditorofthatjournal tooktheprecautionofinterviewing HisLordship,toascertainthetruth orotherwiseoftheallegationscontainedtherein.SurelytheEditorof the"West".hadsufficienttimeafter hisreleasefrom"arduouslabours"in theLegislativeCounciltoenquireif therewas,anytruthinthecharges madeby"Catholicus."Infiveminuteshecouldhavelearnedthata fullandcompletereportofthefinancialaffairsoftheDiocesehadbeen publishedlastMay,givingadetailedaccountofthereceiptsandexpenditure.
With"Catholicus"himselfwehave noconcern.Assumingforthesake ofargumentthat,hebelongstothe CatholicChurch,heisnotthefirst renegadewhohasattemptedtoachieve,notorietybyslanderingthevenerableinstitutiontowhichheprofesseshypocriticalallegiance-andin allprobabilityhewillnotbethe last.CardinalManningdividedthe averagecongregationintotwoclasses-thedoersandthetalkers.The firstclassworksilentlyandwithout ostentationfortheadvancementof relieion,andthe,"talkers"donothing-excepttocriticisewhatis done.TheCathedralParishis,we presume,noexceptiontothatgeneralrule.
Thecarpingcritic'sreferenceto the"W.A.Record"as"thesectarianpaper"isbeneathevenourcontempt.Ifwemistakenot,hisrambling.incoherent,and(attimes) ungrammaticaleffusions,havemore thanonce,beenaccordedacongenial restingplaceinourwastepaper basket-hencethosejeers.
Inthefaceofsuchmagnificentgenerosityonthepartofapeoplewho arebynomeansendowedwitha surplusoftheworld'sgoods,Bishop Clunecouldwellaffordtoignorethe contemptibleinsinuationsofanirresponsible(andnameless)scribbler.
Batlestsilencemightinsome quartersbeconstruedasatacitadmissionofwrong-doing,HisLordshipthreatenedtoserveawrit fordefamationontheoffendingjournal.TheEditorinlastMonday's issueprudentlydecided"topublish withoutdelayMessrs.Smithand Lavan'sstatement,andtoexpress regretthatanythingshould%haveappearedinthe'WestAustralian'to havegivenpainorannoyancetothe muchrespectedBishop."
Expensivelawsuitsareluxuries whicheventheEditorofdailypaperscannotaffordtosampletoo often.
