ItsOriginandPurpose

LastJuneandJulyIhadthehonourandprivilegeofattendingat Prague,thecapitaloftheCzech kingdomofBohemia,amostrepresentativeand,aseventsproved,a mostportentousgatheringofthe leadingmenofthegreatSlavStates,notablyBulgarians,Servians, Montenegrins,andBohemians.Itwas anuniquegatheringinmanyre- /spects.Itwasthelargestmeeting oftheseland-dividedbutracially-unitedraceseverbeforeheld,andit wasthefirstoccasiononwhich SerbandBulgarhadmetonacommonplatform.Nowtheyarefightingsidebysideonthebloodiest battlefieldsofourtimeandcovering themselveswithimmortalglory. TherewereotherSlaysatthatsignificantandimpressivemeeting. Therewerealtogethersome30,000 to40,000Poles,Russians,Croatians, Dalmatians,Macedonians.andcountlessothersoftheSlavrace,buta commonpurposeanimatedthemthe determinedresurgenceoftheSlav, hisrisefromserfdomtosovereignty,hisevolutionfrombeingruledto beingaruler.Hehasgonethrough hislongandtediousprocessofevolution.Hehasbornetheburdenof servitude,wornthebadgeofslavery forcenturies,butatlonglasthe hasresolvedtorisefromthesleep ofages,andbeisnowwithmagni ficentcourageassertinghimself.Afterall,nineteenmillionsofpeople, howeverlocallyseparated,cannotbe withoutweightinthecouncilsof Earope.Iknewgreatthingswere coiningwhenIsawthosemenand watchedtheirmovementssawthe airofdeterminationandresolvethat wasintheireye,howtheymarched throughthestreets,howtheywent throughtheexercisesoftheSokols. Victoryaftervictory,successafter successfollowedtheirpathandclownedtheiractions.Town,fort,city, andoutpost,itmatterednothing. Allwentdownbeforetheall-conquering,all-victoriousallies.Napoleon'sbestbattleswerenothingto GeneralIvanoff's,andtheotherBulgarian,Servian,Montenegrin,and Greekleaderswhohaveraisidthemselvestothepinnacleofnowbeing thebestsoldiersinEurope.After all,itisbutasitshouldne,that. theTurkshouldgo.Heneverwas acclimatisedinEuropealthoughhere forfivehundredyears.Hehaverregardedhimselfathomehere-tieonlylookeduponhimselfasasojournersettledhereforatime.Lord HoughtoninhisEasternPoemsvery beautifullyandtrulyexpressesthat ideaofisolation.Thusweread:-

TheRosarysaidincommonsweetlyfostersthehomelife,whichwa oneofthemustbeautifulfeatures theChristianfamilyintheAgesof Faith,andtheabsenceofwhichis oneofthecryingevilsofourtime.

THEREV.S.BURKE,D.D.,SIDNEY.

Weregrettoannouncethatthe Rev.S.Burke,D.D..diedinthe LewishamHospitalonNov.27th. astheresultofanoperation.Dr. Burkepreviouslyunderwentanoperationintheyear1908.Anativeof England,deceased,whowas41years ofage,cametoAustraliaasachild. Hereceivedhisearlyeducationat theHaymarket,afterwardsstudying atSt.Ignatius'College,Riverview, andalsoattheIrishCollegein Rome,wherehewasordainedin1904. Thedeceasedpriestwasaprofessor atSt.Patrick'sSeminary,Manly, foratimewasstationedatSt. Augustine'sChurch,BalmainEast, andforthelastsevenyearswasat,tachedtoSt.Thomas's.Lewisham. ThelastSacramentswereadministeredbytheRev.W.J.McCallion, O.M.I.,ofPerth(W.A.),whowasan inmateofthehospital.Mayhissoul restinpeace.

Afatalitywhichcausedwidespread regretoccurredonthe20thinst.in Wellington(N.Z.),thevictimbeing theVeryRev.C..T.Venning,S.M.

ItappearsthatFatheryenningwas ridinghismotor-cycle,and,when turningthecornerofHill-streetand Guildford-terrace,heseemedtolose controlofthemachine,whichthen dashedintothefence.Therecoil threwhimoffthebicycle,andhebecameentangledinthemachine.When medicalaidwasprocureditwas foundthatFatherVenninghadsustainedconcussionofthebrainand fractureoftheskull.Twohourslaterhedied.Duringthosehourshe regainedconsciousnessandreceived thelastritesoftheChurch.

Thedeceasedpriestwashorn inTimaruin1879,andwas asonof Mr.John Venning,ofthattown.Hestudied atSt.Patrick'sCollege,Wellington, andSt.Mary's,Meanee,HawkesBay. Ilewasappointedtotheteaching staffofSt.Patrick'sCollege,andin 1903hewasordained.Hespentthe wholeofhispriesthoodinWellington.ForsevenyearshewasstationedatBOOlicott-street,andatthe beginningofthisyearhewastransferredtoHill-street.Hedisplayed greatability,energyandenthusiasm intheinterestsofthechurch,and paidspecialattentiontofurthering theobjectsofSt.VincentdePaul society.Mayhissoulrestinpeace.

Wehaveallreadoverandover againofthephilosophicdreamer, whothoughthehadatlastsecured theelixiroflife.Attemptstoprolonglifeandrenewyouthhavealwaysendedinfailure.Humaninstitutions,likehumanlife,"havetheir day,andceasetobe."Thereis, however,onesocietyintheworld thatcanprovethatitisnotmerely humanbydisplayingit.Thatisthe CatholicChurch.Aftertwothousandyears,notwithstandingunceasingoppositionfromthedaysofNerotothemostmodernheresiarch, wefindherinthisnewcountry, sprine-likeinenthusiasm,energyand beauty.ThegrowthoftheChurchis marvellous.Yesterdayshewasbut aninfant;to-daywebeholdagiant. ThisisindependentofCuba,the Philippinesandothercolonies.

Andinregardtothe.officialreturngivenofthemembers,ashort explanationmaybeuseful.Though thestatisticsto-daymentiontheCatholicsasnumberingfifteenmillions, thosemostintimatelyin,touchwith thesemattersrecognisethatthisis farbelowthemark.Thereasons givenforthisopinionaresolid.

ArchbishopGlennon,appointedto takechargeoftheorganisingwork ofthiscensus,carriedouthis'laboursaswellascouldpossiblybeexpected.Yetitisanopensecret thatsomediocesessentbacknoreturns.Therearestillmanywhobelievethatnogoodcomesfromnumberingthepeople.Besides,several priestsacknowledgedtheirinability togetacompleteparochialcensus. EvenintownslikeSydney,itisdifficultinalmostanyparishtoget closetothetruth.Howmuchmore mustbethecaseinNewYork,Chicago,andotherlargecentresin America,wherepeopleliveinfiats thataremainlyusedas"sleepers"?

TheChurches,schools,presbyteries, academies,hospitals.andotherinstitutions,areconcreteexpressions oftheirfaithandgenerosity.The foundationsofagloriousChurch whichtheyhavelaid,givingpromiseofperpetuity,havealreadyassumedaformandextentandbeauty,unsurpassedisanyothercountry.Thethroatbeginstoswell,and theeyegrowsdim,whenthethought ofthoseexilesinthebowelsofa greatAtlanticliner,withnothingto cheerthewayexceptperhapsthe concertinaormelodeon,relictofthe oldcrossroaddances,possessingnothingbutaheartfullofthegoldof faith,andloveofGodandcountry, drivenbyfaminefromtheirownsmilinglandto"traverseworldsbeyond theWesternmain,"comesbeforethe mind.Butletushowinlowlyreverencetotheir'memory.TheyhavecreatedanewworldforGod.Theyhave formedanewCommonwealthforour Saviour,whosefuturepossibilities andmissionnomancanputalimit to.Andwearegladtobearwitness thatsofarwealthorsuccesshas notdestroyedthem.Thoughsome oftheirdescendantsaregoingclosertoFifthAvenue.theIrish-Amer-

TheSubiacoBranchhasreceived morethandoublethatnumberinthe timespecified.TheHiherniansof Subiacoaredeeplyinterestedinthe newSchool,andaregivingeveryassistance.AgainhewelcomedHis LordshipastheirBishop,their SpiritualRuler,andtheirGreatLeader.

Attheendofthefirstpartofthe programme,HisLordshiptheBishop wasinitiatedasamemberoftheSt. Kevin'sBranchoftheHibernianSociety. Thisnarrativeisfromthepenofadistinguishedmemberofthe ParisianCatholicPress,whowaspresentatLourdesduringthegreat "NationalPilgrimage"intheautumnof1907,whenthecuretookplace.
