"Itwasawearyclimbtruly,and oftenIpausedtorestandtake breathforafresheffort,"says "N.D."inthe"IrishCatholic." "Lookinguptowardsthetowering, mist-coveredsummit,ordownwhere thevillagelaydiminthedistance, thesightfilledmealwayswithwonder.Surely,Iwastheonlyweary one!Abovemetoiledmassesofpeople-men,women,andevenchildrenwhoclimbedwithundauntedcourageandunswervingperseverancethe almostperpendicularmountain-side. Followingmestreamedhundreds fromeverysideofthecountry,some armedwithstrongsticks,allcheerful,earnest,energetic.Thescenewas aproof-ifproofwereneeded-thatin thisIrelandofourstheSpiritof Faithisasvitalto-dayaseverit wasincenturiesgone.

Asthecloudsrollawayandthe mistsrise,whatascenetoberevealedBelow,ClewBay,withitshundredsofemeraldislets,itsslender, gracefulpeninsulas,liesshimmering inthesunlight.Itssandyshoresencircleitlike,ribbonsofgleamingsilver,andfromitsbanksriseplain afterplainofmeadowandcornand grassland.Farawayontheother sidestretchthemanifoldLeauties ofConnemaraandtheNinePins. Lakesglitterandsparklebetween thehills;valleyssmileinPeaceful loveliness;thePinsriseoneafteranotherinpinnacledsplendour the sceneislikeaglimpseintofairyland-afairy-landwhereeveryimaginableshadeofgreenblendsina wonderful,harmoniouswhole.Standingattheedgeofthemountain, marvellingatthegrandeurbeforeme, thewordsofthewell-knownsong springunconsciouslytomylies:Thatchainlesswaveandlovely land FreedomandNationhoodlemaed. BesuretheGreatGodneverplanned Forslumberingslavesahomeso grand.

"LetmegiveyoubrieflymeimpressionsofthatSundayatCroagh Patrick.Fromasearlyasdawnthe Pilgrimsbegantheirjourneytothe "Reek."ManyhadarrivedinWestporttheeveningbeforesomefrom theEast,somefromtheSouth.acme fromtheNorth.Iconfesstofeeling ashockofsurprisewhenCroaghPatrickfirstloomedbeforeme-asteep, toweringmountainpeak,risingsheer fromthebanksofClewBaytomore thantwothousandfeetaboveit.I darednotexpressmymisgivings, inthosefirstmomentstheideaof ascendingitseemedfoolhardyand almostimpossible.Onarrivingatits foot.however,eagerpilgrimsthronged.fromeveryside,andIfoundmyselfsweptalongirresistiblyamong them,tillanythoughtofdesertion seemedcowardly. Whatkindwerethey,thesepeople? AsvariedagatheringasIhaveever seeninIreland.Priests,bothsecularandregular;peoplewhosedress andgeneralairborethestampof thecity;comfortable-lookingmembersofthewealthyfarmingclass: inhabitantsofthesurroundingtowns andvillages peasantsfromthe mountainsandhillsofSligo,whose hardyweather-beatenfacesproclaimedthematoncechildrenofthesoil; numbersofbare-footedpoor,andoccasionally"anAmericancousin." Azig-zagpathcreepsupthemountainside.Inthebeginningthesoil issoftandspringy,pleasantenough towalkupongraduallyitchanges, becomesstoney,rugged,sharp;the lastpieceiswhatIcanonlydescribeasasteepwalloflarge,loo.e stones;ateverystepthestonesslip andgivewayunderyourfeetany attempttoreachthesummitabove youseemsfruitlessandvain.But therewasnosignofdefeator dejectiononthefaceofthe pilgrims.Pauseamomentand watchthem. Thewords"prohibition"and"Prohibitionists"haveasoundnotalwayswelcometoCatholicears.EvenCatholicswhobelieveintheprincipleofprohibitionareslowtoenterintoanymovementinfavourof it,inasmuchthatagoodmanyvery earnestprohibitionistsareoftenvery narrow-mindedtowardCatholics. Yet,aspointedoutintheAmerican CatholicHistoricalResearchesfor July,thefirstagitationforprohibitionofthesaleofintoxicatingliquors,andthefirstactualprohibitive legislationinNorthAmericatook placenotinMaine,hutinNew France,andthatasearlyasthe seventeenthcentury.Thisprohibition,however,wasplannedt,1preventthedebauchingoftheIndians withliquor.

SCHOOLCHILDRENFARMERS.

NotlongagoWakeCounty,in NorthCarolina,wasshortofmoney. Thechildreninthecounty'spublic schools,however,hadbeentaught scientificfarming,andthecounty utilisedthiseducation,attacheda smallfarmtoeachschoolhouse,and putthechildrenatworkonthem. Theresultwasthatduringlast seasonthesefarmsmadeaprofitof gas,.Thesizeofthefarmapportionedtoeachschoolvariedfrom twetotenacres,accordingtothe quantityoflandavailable,andeach farmraiseditsdistinctivecrop.The Practicalsuccessofthefarmswas sogreatthatthecountywillcontinuethemethod,andincreasingprofitseveryyearareanticipated.FarmersintheUnitedStates,andprobablyelsewhere,havelearnedthat brainsratherthanexperiencemust he'icedinthecultivationofland.

TRADERSINBADLITERATURE AREWORSETHANPICKPOCKETS.

RecentlytherewasagreatCrusadedemonstrationinDublin,held undertheauspicesoftheCatholic YoungMen'sSociety,andpresided overbytheLordMayorofthecity. AmongthosepresentwastheEarl ofAberdeen,LordLieutenantofIreland,whodeliveredanaddressin whichheexpressedinstrikingform hisideaofthemagnitudeoftheevil againstwhichthemovementisdirected.Thisishowheputit

Youshowme,saidhe,twomen; youpointtooneandsay,thatis themanwhostoleyourpurse,and thenyoupointtotheotherand say,thatisamanwhohascirculatedaperniciousbookorpicture. ThensayI"Letmeshakehands withthepickpocketasasortofgentlemancomparedwiththeother."

Themanwhosellsbadpicturesor bdo,ksisregardedinIrelandas worsethanapickpocket,andthe Planofcampaignagainsthimand histradeistobeofthepractical kindasthusresolvedonattheDublindemonstration "Thatthismeetingpledgesitself tosupportonlythosenewsagents' shopsinwhichtheVigilanceCommittee'sapprobationcardisprominentlydisplayed,andtodiscourage byeverymeansinitspowerthe saleandcirculationofpernicious publications,andtomakethetrade inimmoralliteratureanunprofitableonebyrefusingtopurchase anything,harmlessorevengoodthoughitmaybe,inanybook-shopor otherplaceinwhichdemoralising publications,whetherexposedtoview ornot,areknowntoheonsale.

ThiskindofVigilancewillsoon tellonthe.obnoxioustrade.Thehad literatureevilinIrelandisdoomed. Itmustgo,butnottomakeplace foranothersortofliteratureobjectionabletothema'orityoftheIrish People-forthecirculationofwhich itmightbeattemptedtousethe Crusademovementastosomeextentanagencyoranopening.On thispointtheLordLieutenantin hisspeechmadehisownposition veryclear.Hesaidthat"sefaras heandhishousewereconcernedthey wouldnothaveactorpartinanythingthatcouldoffendthefeelingof anyCatholic.HewouldnotParticipateinanythingwhichapproached orcameundertheheadofproselytism."

THESIMPLELIFE.

ordrivenbytyrannicalnecessities, orhunteddownbycompetitorsor baffledbyoppositions. Ourambitionsmustrangewithin thepracticallyattainable.Itmust notbeamatterof-graveanxiety foruswhetherwecangoonliving orno.Theremustbeacertain stability,acertainsecurityabout fundamentals.Acertainmediocrity ofwell-beingmustbemaintainable withoutstress.Theremustbeno chronicfiercenessaboutlife-neither intheformofadesperatestruggle forexistencenorintheformofmorbidcravingsforwealthorposition orenjoymentoranythingelse. Leisurelinesswithoutlaziness, calmnesswithoutapathy,enterprise with'outworry'oranxiety,earnestness,withoutfanaticism,effortwithoutstrainfreedomfromthehauntingcurseoftimeasensethatlife onthewholeisasecureandcomfortableandenjoyablething,large andleisurelyandroomyenoughto makeonefeelatease-toenableone toruminateoverit,andenjoyit, andgetfullvalueoutofitasort offeelingthatthereisplacefor everything,and,thatonthewhole thingsareintheirrightplace-or canwithalittleeffortbegotthere thatthereistimetodoeverything, andbreathingtimetospare." a.

The"bestman,"whoplayssoimportantapartinwell-regulated marriagesthatnowadayshaveany Pretenceatalltothefashionable, onceonatimeinSwedenoccupieda positionthatwasusefulaswellas ornamental.Intheolddaysthe Swedishgroomfounditdesirable,in fact,tohaveseveral"bestmen"to defendhimfromtheassaultsofrivalsandpreventthemfromcarrying awayhisbride.TheScandinavain warriorofancienttimewasfartoo loftyinhisideastocondescendto Pleadforamaiden',hand.Sohe patientlywaiteduntilsomeother manwhowasmoregallanthadobtainedthefairone'sconsent.Then. whenallthedetailshadbeennicely arranged,th,proudwarrior,witha bodyofwell-trainedretainers.dasheddownontheweddingparty,and, ifstrongenough,carriedawaythe bride.The"bestmen"(anditwas veryessentialthattheyshouldhe thehestmeninthosedays)thereforebecamenecessaryfixturestothe marriageceremony,andth,vwereswellesteemed,andtheirpopularity

THEGREATCHANCELLORWHOM HENRYVIII.SENTTODEATH. SirThomasMore,whoheldtheexaltedofficeofLordChancellorof England,wasexecutedlikeacommonfelonbythemurderousHenry VIII.forrefusingtobeapartyto hisinfamousdesigns,hisdeathtakingplaceonJuly7th,1535,atthe ageof57years.Hehadsucceeded totheLordChancellorshipin1529, afterthefallofWolsey,andinthis capacityhewasaskedbyHenryfor anofficialopinionfavouringhisdivorcefromhislawfulwife.

Moreconstantlyrefusedtolendhis authoritytoanysuchguiltyends, andfinallytenderedhisresignation rather.thanconsenttotheking'sdemands.Fromthattimehewasa markedman,andHenrywasdeterminedtofindsomepretexttosend himtothescaffold.In1;34hewas calledupontoswearallegianceto theActofSuccessionforsecuring thethronetotheoffspringofAnne Boleyn,thusdisinheritingtherightfulheir,Mary,thedaughterofCatherine.

CHESTERTONONNEWMAN. Newman,hadhemarchedwithhis age,wouldhavebeeninevitablyrecognisedasthegreatestofitschildren.Instead,hechosedeliberately tosethimselfagainsthisage.No onewilleverunderstandthegreatnessofthemanwhodoesnotrealisethathelivedinatimewhen foranintelligentmantojointhe CatholicChurchwasregardedasan outrageoncommonsenseorcommonhonesty.Kingsleyprobablyhad thegeneralopinionwithhimwhen hesaidbluntlythatamanwhoprofessedtobelieveintheintercession ofsaintsorinmiraclesworkedby relicsmustheeitherahypocriteora fool.Foralltherepresentativemen ofthatera,howeverindifferenttheir talents,temperaments,oropinions, forDickens,forMacaulay,forCarlyle,forMill,forHuxley,theCatholicChurchwasnotsomuchan enemyasathingsimplyleftbehind. Wehaveleftallthatbehind.PeoplemaystillthinktheCatholicdoctrinesuntrue.Butnooneisnow surprisedatanintellectualmanbelievingthem.Kingsley'ssarcasms soundstrangeintheearsofagenerationwhichhasseen,inEngland, inFrance,everywhere,theablest mindsoneafteranotherreturningto theoldEuropeanphilosophy.Butall thisshouldnotmakeusforgetto honouramanwhoaccepteditwhen itsacceptancepresenteditselftothe massofwelleducatedpeopleasan alternativebetweenlunacyandlying.TheintellectualrevivalofCatholicismwhichthesedayshaveWitnessedwasinnosmalldegreehis workbuttothatworkhisown framewassacrificed-andhehardly livedtoseeitaccomplished.

Now,ofcourse,thesituationisin theacutestdegreereversed.Newman, sofarfrombeingsneeredatasa reactionary,isoftenacclaimedas thefounderof"Modernism."Theaccusationisfullyasunjustandmuch crueller.NewmanwascertainlyneveraModernist.EvenbeforehisreceptionhehadPuthisangeronPantheismasthegreatperiloftheage; andmostModernismworkscuta Pantheism.ItistruethattheModernistshavetriedtousesomeof Newman'sideas("theeasierone," asMatthewArneld's"Arminius" said),butNewmanwouldcertainly havehatedthe,meddle-headedthing ashewouldhavescornedtheabsurd name.Itis,however,tritethatthere wereelementsintheCatholicorganisationinEnglandthatregarded Newmanwithatingeofdistrust, andthathewasnotgieenasfreea handasmighthavebeenwise.For thisreasonhisgeniusnever,perhaps,producedalltheeffectthatit oughttohavedoneinedeferenceto theChurchtowhichfromthemomenthejoinedithewaspassionatelyloyal.

Thehallwasengagedfortheday, whichfactwasfullyappreciatedby allmembersoftheparty,asthe seemewhatboisterousweatherrenderedthecustomaryopen-airpicnicconditionsandamusementsimpracticable.Thefactofbeingindoorsfor thegreaterpartofthedaydidnot, however,haveanyappreciableeffect ontheenjoymentoftheday,asthe afternoonandeveningwentquickly byinthevariousindoorgamesand Pastimes.Rainfallingheavilyinthe lateafternooncausedsomelittle anxiety,buthappilytheskycleared andafastiourneyhomeendeda mostenjoyableouting,thesuccess ofwhichmaybeattributedinno smallwaytothearrangementsmade bytheladiesfortheamusementof theparty.
