Thebreadofhumankindnessand s,mPathywhichonecastsuponthe watersmayreturnaftermanydays intheformofafortune.Itisa goodinvestmentanyway,eventhough theremaybenofinancialreturns realisedfromitinthisworld.Sometimes,however,agreatsurpriseis instorefortheonewhothusseeks tobrightenthewayofsomeless fortunatefellowtravelleralonglife's ruggedpathway.SeveralAmerican instancesofthiskind.havecometo lightrecently,andareherebriefly recountedinproofoftheassertion, withtheadditionofafewnotquite sorecentjusttoroundoutthe story.

NewOrleanswassweptbyanepidemicofyellowfeverafewyears ago,duringwhichpeoplediedbythe hundreds.Asmallarm.,ofdoctors andnurses,heroes,andheroineseveryoneofthem,enteredthestricken cityasvolunteerstofightdownthe Plague.OneofthesenursespaidesPedalcaretoawomanandhertwo childrenwhomsheattended,fortheir casewasdesperate.Therecoveryof allthreewasdueasmuchtoher carefulnursingastoanyotherreason.Theyoungnursereturnedto herhomeinIndiana,afterthescouragehadabated,andeventuallyshe married.Ashorttimeagoshereceivednoticefromafirmoflawyers thatthroughthedeathofthewomanshehadsocal'efullynursedduringtheyellowfeverepidemicshe hadbeenleftbywillthetidy fortuneof£20,000.

ThenthereisthecaseofarailroadporterofSaultSte.Marie. Oneafternoonhistrainroundeda

Thepolicemanboughtticketsand andsentherhome,thinkingnomore ofthematter.Theotherdaythe noblefellowwasinformedthathe hadjustfallenheirtoE4,000throughthedeathofthiswoman,who tookthatwaNtorewardhimforhis kindnesstoherinthehourofher distress.

AmanfromWilmington,Del., whiletravellingonatrainafew yearsagowasfirsttoaidafellow Passengerwhowastakenst.ddenly ill.NotlongagohewasleftE1,600 bytheoldgentleman,whohadnot forgottenthedeedofkindness.

Anemployertookespecialcareto relievethelonelinessofadeafworkmanwhomotherseithershunnedor wereindifferentabout.Hethought nomoreaboutitafterthemanhad quithisserviceforwhatpromiseda greateropportunity.Ashorttime agothedeafmandied,andthe thoughtfulemployerwasgiven£I000 underhiswill.

NotlongagoadoctorwassurprisedbythegiftbywillofEr,000 forhavingsome'yearspreviouslybefriendedawidowwhomhethought to'bepenniless.Anotherwhoreceivedalikebequestforkindnessinthe pastisaclerkinPennsylvania,who hadreallyforgottenhavingshared hisrationsandthecontentsofhis canteenwithacomradeinthebattleofSantiagoduringtheSpanishAmericanbrush.Theclerkfinally recalledtheincident,buthedidnot knowthenameofthesoldierhehad befriended.

AnAmericanpaperrecentlycalled attentiontothefactthatPresident Lincoln'sschoolmasterwasanIrishman.Therewasverylittleopportunityfor"schooling"inKentucky whenLincolnwasaboy,forthe schoolswerefewandfarbetween. But,accordingtotradition,what littleeducationLincolnhadwas receivedfromanoldIrishschoolmasternamedRiney.Thesonof themanwhotaughttheyouthful Abethemysteriesofthe"primer" andDilworth's"SpellingBook"is stillaliveattheageof84.Heis BrotherBenedictoftheTrappist MonasteryatGethsemane,Kentucky. HisbaptismalnamewasWilliam Riney. Hisfatherwasoneoftheearly settlersinHardingCounty,where hewasformanyyearsengagedin teachingschool.HewasaneighbourofThomasLincoln,andaccordingtothetraditioninthatsection itwas"MasterRiney"whotaught youngAbrahamhislettersbeforethe familyremovedtoSpencerCounty, Indiana.Wereitnotfortherules oftheTrappistOrder,thevenerable BrotherBenedictmighttellaninterestingstoryofLincoln'searly life.

Itisaremarkablefactthatmany ofthepibneerteachersofthatregionwereIrishmen.Abbot,inhis "LifeofDanielBoone,"saysthenotedfrontiersmanwastaughtbyan Irishschoolmaster;Boone'schildren weretaughtbyJosephDonovanat BoonesboroughthecelebratedJudge MarshallandPresidentZacharyTaylorlearnedtherudimentsatKane O'Mara'sschoolatFrankfort,while amongothersofKentucky'searly schoolmasterswefindHogan,McNamara,Reilly,DunleavJoyce,Whalen,Byrne,and"thescholarlybut eccentricIrishman,"RichardKeene, whopreparedforCollegemanyof Kentucky'ssonswhodistinguished themselvesinlateryears.There areseveralexcellentauthoritiesforthestatementthat itwasJohnReillywhoestablishedtheveryfirstschoolinthe valleyoftheOhio,westofPittsburg.

Seldomhasgreaterhonourbeen Paidanywomanthanthatrendered toahumblereligiousrecentlyinCologne.TheoccasionwasthefuneralofSisterJosephaGertrudeKuhnbache,GeneralSuperioroftheCelletinesintheKumpfergasse.Afterthe SolemnRequiemMassattheChurch ofSt.Maria,thefuneralprocession passedthroughmourningcrowds. ThebandoftheSixty-fifthRegiment ofInfantryledthecortegeplaying funeralmarches.Thencamethemedicalofficerofhealthforthecity, deputationsoftheLazarists,thedoctorsofthegarrison,andanumber ofmilitaryofficersrepresentingall grades,andseveralregimentsofthe Germanarmy.ThecauseofthishonourwasthefactthatSisterJosepha,whowasbornin1844antienteredthenovitiateofhercongregationin1862,wasveryactiveinthe hospitalinKerfelde,andlateron thebattlefieldsof1861and18-so, andinthemilitaryhospitalsofBohemiaandFrance,whereshetended thewoundedwithadevotionand skillwhichmakehernameahouseholdwordintheGermanarmy.She hadmanythrillingadventures,and wasmorethanonceexposedtofire uponthebattlefieldwhileintheperformanceofherdutiestothewoundedandthedying.

Mr.JohnMcNally,attherecent PlymouthConferenceoftheC.Y.M.S. contributedaninterestingandpracticalpaperon"WhyIamaMember oftheYoungMen'sSociety."The Paperhadalreadybeenawardedfirst prizeinanessaycompetitionheld duringthewinter.Thefirstreason formembership,hesaid,wasbecause theSocietywasonewhosebasiswas thereligiousandsocialre:;uirementsofitsmembers,andassuchit haddone,andwasdoing,;roodwork inthebestinterestsofCatholic men.Thatithaddonegoodwork sinceitsformationhalfacentury agofew,ifany,woulddeny.Itsrecordwasnomeanone.Inseason andoutofseasonithailinstilledintoitsmemberstherockprinciple thatiftheyweretobetruetothem seves,andtruetotheirreligion, theymustbeuprightineveryway; anditpointedoutasuremeansto thisend-first,inregularandsystematicattentiontomonthlyConfessionandCommunion,and,second,in intimatecontactwithfellowCatholics,influencingthem,andbeinginfluencedbythemforgood.Itrecognisedthatwhichhadbeensomuch recognisedsinceitsfoundation,namely,thegreatpowerthereisinunity -thecombiningofmentogetherfor theattainmentofspecificobjects andithadsoughtbyunitytoattainitstwo-foldobjectofthespiritualandthetemporal.Quietly,unostentatiously,ithadworkedits way,takingroothereandthere,untilnowtherewashardlyaphaseof Catholiclifeintowhichitsworkdid notenter,directlyorindirectly,in themanyparishesinwhichitflourished.Whetheritbeintheeffortto attractmentothehealthierinfluencesofitsrooms,wherebytheir practicalreligionmightbefostered, orintheworkoftheChurchin whichlaymenmighttaketheirrightfulpart;whetheritbeinlocalmatters-municipalorpoorlaw-in whichCatholicinterestswereinvolved,orinnationalmattersaffecting Catholicprinciples,theSocietyhad graduallybecomeapowerforgood. Proceeding,thespeakertestifiedto themanyandgreatbenefitshehad receivedfromtheSocietyduringa practicallyunbrokenmembershipof abouttwentyyears.

Ashorttimeagooneoftee:readersinformedusthatthedevil's agentswerebusilyengagedincirculatingtheworksofthenefarious "MariaMonk"insomeoftheWest Australiancountrydistricts.Lies andcaluminouschargestravelfast andgofarbeforetheycanbeovertakenandworks,suchasthatreferredto,eventhoughtheymaybe thoroughlyrefutedanddiscredited, leavebehindtheminthemindsof theirreadersanastytrailoffilth andaveinofcorruptionthat,in ninecasesoutoften,canneverbe removed.

TheeditoroftheBombay"Examiner,"whoishimselfaconvertfrom Protestantism,givesinarecentisseeofhispaperaveryimportant warningagainstthisclassofdebasedanddemoralisingliterature.

"Iamafraid,"sayshe,"most PeopleknowwhatMariaMonk means.Thosewhodonotdeserve congratulationbutfortheirsake thefollowingexplanationmustbe riven.Thehookappearedin1836, andcontainedadisclosureofanaliezedandsystematicpracticeofimpurityandothercrimesprevailingin acertainconventinMontreal,Canada,ofwhichthewriter,aninmate forseveralyears,wasaneyewitness and,undercompulsion,aparticipator.Thestorywasimmediatelyinvestigated,anditstotalfalsityproved. ThewholeoftheProtestant pressinCanadaroseupinarmsto vindicatetheconventagainstthis crossslander.Thewriterwasprovedtoheawomanofloosecharacter whohadlivedalifeofprostitution andconcubinageforyears,andwho hadneverbeenanun,andneverin theconventdescribed.Shewas, moreover,avictimtospellsofmentalaberration.Inthiswayshehad beenpatronisedbycertainfanatical anti-Romanists,andusedasatool forcalumniatingtheCatholicclergy. Thechiefwitnessestablishingthese factswasthegirl'sownmother,to whomherdaughterwasastanding causeofshameandgrief.(TheevidenceistobefoundinaC.T.S. tractentitled"TheTrueHistoryof MariaMonk,"priceonepenny.) Thusthebookwastotallydiscreditedwithinayearofitspublication. Andyetithasalwaysmaintained currencyandisstillreproducedin cheapeditionsandsoldbytwoclassesofpersons-(t)Disreputableshopkeeperswhomakeaspecialityof panderingtovicebyvendingindecentbooksandphotographs,"French letters"andotherinstrumentsfor evadingtheconsequencesofvice and(2)acertainclassofextremeProtestantfanaticslikeMr. Kensit,ofPaternosterRow,who(we readinanotedatedApril,rgee "stillcontinuestocirculateitwith theobjectofprejudicingEnglish mindsagainstCatholicconvents and-accordingtothereportswhich havereachedus-certainProtestant ministersinIndiawhodothesame inordertoprejudiceIndianminds aeainstCatholicpriestsandnuns, andtocounteractthesuccessofthe catholicmissionworkinthiscoiln!r,... Noslander.Ithink,everreceived immediateendsocompletearefuhaVonacthiswork,"MariaMonk." :,ringprovedtobeaPurefiction

withoutevenascrapoffoundation. Itsonlyproperfate,therefore,would becremationatthehandsofthe publicexecutioner,anditsfurther circulationrenderedcriminal.The criminalitycouldbebroughtunder twodistinctheads.Firstunderthe lawoflibelitstandsasacalumny againstadistinctandspecified groupofpersonsactuallyexisting andwellknown.Secondly,underthe lawofindecentliteratureitstands asoneofthemostindecentbooks everwritten.Itsfalsitydeprivesit ofthepleathatitisapublicexe Posureofcrimeandawarningtothe publicagainstabodyofcriminals. Thisbeingthecase,howthebookis stillallowedtobepublishedand circulatedfreelycanbeexplainedonlybythesuppositionthatitisprintedwithoutanypublisher'sname, andisonlysoldfurtivelywhilethe policepresenttheirblindeyetothe eroceeding. Itis,Irepeat,themostindecent hookIeverreadinmylife.Yetit wasinsecretcirculationamongmy youngcompanions,andthuscame into'myownhandswhileaProtestantboyoffourteen.Iremember howwe-bothboysandgirls,strange torelate-discussedit.Interesting torelatethatitdidnotprejudiceus muchagainstCatholicpriestsand nuns.Beingfreefromthegullibility ofProtestantfanaticism,ourcommonsensetoldusthatsorespected andwell-knownabodycouldnotbe thevibemonstersoflicentiousness whichthebookmadethemoutto he.Ourconclusion,whichIrememberwell,wasthat"athingortwo mightoccasionallyhappenbutthis sortofsystematicdebaucherywas tooutterlytoo-too!"

Inshort,mylife-impressionofthat bookisthatitservesthepurpose notofdamagingtheCatholicChurch, butsolelyofpanderingto.,outhful Pruriency.Andthevividnessofits descriptionsissuchthatIcannot imagineanyyoungpersonreadingit withoutfoulingthemind,andexcitingevilthoughtsanddesireswhich mustalmostinfalliblyissueindeeds.

Anyone,therefore,whoundertakes toputthisworkintothehandsofa youngmanorwomanstandsconvictedofadeliberateattempttocorruptthemoralsofyouth,andindictableunderthelawofobscene literature.

withcloseddoors-notmerelyas objectionable,butinfinitelymore objectionable,becausepresentedpicturesquelyandsuggestively,soas toappealdirectlytothefeelings. Thisbeingthecase,Iventuretoextendmypreviousopinion,andto saythatanybodywhodeliberately recommendsacopynotonlyofMariaMonk,butevenofChiniquy,to anyyoungmanorwomantoread, standsguiltyofthecrimeofcorruptingthemoralsoftheyoung,and oughttobefairlyindictableunder thelawofdisseminatingindecent literature.Whetherhewouldescape convictiononthepleathatthework purportedtobehistorical,andan exposureoffactswhichoughtinthe publicintereststobeexposed,Ido notknow.Butwhateverthelawof thelandmightdecideinthewayof acquittal,thelawofnatureandof Godwouldhardlybesolenient.

Forcorruptingthemoralsofyouth Itaketomeanputtingbeforethe mindofyouthanyimagesorpicturesorideaswhichare,asthey stand,calculatedtoopenthemind toviciousknowledge,ortoamplify suchviciousknowledgealreadythere, ortoexciteevilinclinations bycontagion andsuggestion, andtobringaboutalikelihoodof fallingintosin.ThereisnodenyingthatMariaMonkofallbooks intheworldfulfilsthisdescription.

And,thoughinasomewhatlessdegree,Chiniquyundoubtedlyfallsunderthesamecategory.Icannot.imagineanyyouthreadingsuchbooks andrisingfromtheirperusalstrengthenedinhisendeavoursafterapure life.

Itissimplytofosterandinculcate thatsweetandpeacefulspiritof brotherlyandsisterlylovethatseeks toupliftthelotofthemembers,to brightentheirlivesandtheirhomes, andtoassuageeventhesorrowthat clustersroundtheopengraveofthe deardeadones.Nowthoseobjects, sopraiseworthyandsonoble,are objectsthatshouldwinthesympathyandco-operationofeverymemberofourChurch.(Applause.)There foreIhopetheexampleIhavegivenmaybethemeansofwinningotherstotheranksoftheHibernian Society.OversixteenyearsagoI humblyappliedforadmissiontothe ranksoftheRedemptoristFathers, bringingnothingtothatillustrious orderbutmysins.Afterayear's probation,Iwas,investedwiththe whitecollaroftheOrder.Nowitis myhappyprivilegetobereceivedintotheranksoftheH.A.C.B.Society,whichnumbers50,000inAustral-asia,andtohavemyneckencasedin acollarofgreenandgold.Asyou see,thisnewcollarwhichThavereceivedto-nightcoversandhidesthe PectoralCross.Letmehopethatit maybanishalltheothercrossesthat uptonowhavemadethePurpleso trying.Icherishtileprivilegeconferredonmeto-nightformanyreasons.First,becausethemembersof theHibernianSocietyhavebeenall through,myepiscopatestaunchand faithfulalliesineverygoodworkundertakenforthegloryofGodand thesalvationof.souls.Again,my examplemaybethemeansofstrengtheningandextendingthesociety inthedioceseandofbringingCatholicsineasycircumstancesinto theranks,andifmyexamplecounts foranythinginthewayofincreasingthemembership,Iamquitereadytobecomeanhonorary,memberof everybranchwhere20newmembers willbeenrolledafterto-night,so deeplyhaveIatheartthewelfareof thisexcellentCatholicBenefitSociety.(Loudapplause.)

ingthetriennialperiodwouldbeassistingtoformulateasystemofinterstateclearances.Thedifferent Stateshadsomewhatdifferentlaws andsomewhatdifferent.ratesof contributionsowingtothedifferentrequirementsoftheStateRegistrarsofFriendly,Societies.Now, whenamembermigratedfromone Statetoanother,asarulehewas considerablyolderthanwhenheenteredthesociety,andhencetheDistrictwhichheenteredcouldnotreceivehimunlesshepaidincreased contributions,orinsomeotherway compensatedthereceivingDistrict fortheliabilityitwouldundertake inreceivinghimasamember.Itis notadvisablethatthecontributions shouldberaised,andhenceitis proposedthatwhenamembermigratesfromoneDistricttoanother thereceivingDistrictshouldadmit himwithoutan,,increaseinhiscontributions;butshouldreceiveacertainsumofmoneycalleda"clearancevalue"asaquidpro-quo.My predecessorinthisoffice(Bro.J. Hassel)hasdetailedaschemefor theestablishmentof"interstate clearances"whichseemstohavein ittheelementsforsuccessfullysettlingthequestion.Shortlystatedit isasfollows:-

1.ThateachDistrictshallformulateatableof"clearancevalues" andhaveitregisteredinitslaws.

2.fThattheDistrictwhichamemberleavesshallpayto'theNational Directorythevalueofhieclearance as'setdowninitstableofclearance values.ThattheNationalDirectory shallthenpaytothereceivingDistrictthevalueoftheclearanceas setdowninthelatterDistrict's tableofclearancevalues,andthis shallbethequidproquoforreceivingthememberwithoutincreasing hiscontributions.Insomecasesthe NationalDirectorywillhavetopay more,andinothersless,to thereceivingDistrictthanreceived fromtheDistrictthememberleft.

TheannualreportoftheState EducationDepartmentfortheyear I9I1waspublishedthisweekitis lateincomingtolight, nevertheless.itishighlyinteresting toallclassesofthecommunity, andparticularlysotoCatholics.The reportdisclosesthefactthatthe Castperheadcalculatedonthenaniberofchildrenintheprimary schools,isverymuchontheincrease.Weareinformedthatthe Costperheadoutheaverageattendancefortheyear1910-11,was £5los64d,whilethecostperhead ontheaverageenrolmentforthe year1909-10was£413sold.And aswereadonthroughthereportwe cometotheconclusionthattheaveragecostperheadunenrolment mustbenowwellover£5. thebuildingandequipmentofcountryschools,andtotheimprovement inthesalariesoftheteachers,noone willquarrelwiththem.Itseemsto usthatthecurtailingofexpensesin' otherdirectionswouldhaveenabled theGovernmenttogiveincreased facilitiestothechildrenofouroutbackpioneers,andtofurtherimprovethesalariesoftheteachers whoaresometimescompelledtolive inratheruncongenialsurroundings.

WemustrememberthatthefinancialdetailsofthereportareconcernedonlywiththeyearthatendedonJune3o,1911.Now,thetotalexpenditureoftheDepartment forthatperiodwas£202,176(an increaseof£18,478onthatofthe Previousyear).Thecostisstill verymuchontheincreaseForthe 12monthsendedonJune3oofthis yeartheEducationBillamountedto £238,569-being£36,393above-the expenditurefortheyearendingJune 30,1911.

Doubtless,intheirnextreportthe MinisterandtheInspectorwillgive afullaccountoftheirstewardship bysupplyinguswiththeinteresting detailsthatmakeuptheextra £36,193.

Thereportcontainsaveryslight referencetotheCatholicschools:"EarlyintheyearanotherInspectorwasaddedtothestaff,theDepartmenthavingundertakentocare) out,fullinspectionoftheRoman Catholicschoolsthroughoutthe State."

Forthiscrumbofjusticeweare grateful wehopethatitwillin duecourseoftimeleadtoameasureoffulljustice.

OURPOSITION.

WhentheStateSchoolInspectors examineourschools,whentheteachersinourschoolsfollowinall necessarysecularsubjectsthecurriculumprescribedfortheState Schools,andwhenthepupilscome uptothestandardrequiredbythe State,.surelytherecanbenological reasonfordeprivingourpeopleofa shareintheEducationgrant-a money.

But whatis,afterall,theirown ouropponentsinthismatter arenotalwaysguidedbylogic.Their usualplanistodrawared-herring acrossthetrackbyloudlyproclaimingthattheywillneverfavourthe endowmentofReligion.

CHRISTANDCLASSHATREDS. Christ,thecrucified,neverencouragedclasshatredsasbetweenthe richandthepoor.Hecametosave allmankind,richandpoor.Hewas PoorHimselfandlovedpoverty, buthewasnotaversetoassociating withtherich.IntheBeatitudeson theMountHedidnotsay-"Blessed arethepoor"--but"Blessedthepoor inspirit"-meaningthatevenrich menmaybepoorinspirit-bynot beingattachedtothisworld'sgoods, andgivingoftheirsubstancebountifullytoothers.HecalledMathew oftheCustomHousetotheApostolate,andhewaslikelynotapoor man.HeallowedHimselftobeentertainedbyZacheus,averyrich man,who,nevertheless,confessedto thespiritofpoverty,andHeproflouncedoverhimtheblessing:"This dayissalvationcometothishouse, becausehealsoisasonofAbraham."Nicodemuswasarichman,a ruleroftheJews,andhebelieved inJesus,saying,"Weknowthat ThouartcomeateacherfromGod;" nordidhisrichespreventhimfrom beingajustman,forhedefendedthe SaviouragainstthePharisees,saying"Dothourlawjudgeanyman, beforeithearshim,andknowwhat hedoeth?"andcontributedmoney inpurchasingahundred-poundweight ofmyrrh,andaloesforHisburial. Theincreaseismainlyduetothe greaternumberofsmallcountry schools,andtothefactthatthe salariesofteachersinsuchschools hatebeenimproved.Thelowerfiguresinthetwopreviousfinancial yearswerelargelytheresultof thestoppageofteachers'incrementsin1909.Theexpensesincludedinthiscalculationarethe salariesandallowancesofteachers,andthecostofstock,apparatus,andupkeepofschools.The costofthetrainingofteachers,ofmanualtrainingandcookery(forwhichaspecialvoteis provided),ofinspection,andofdepartmentaladminiwration,isnot included.Thecostoffurnitureand buildings,whichareassetsnotcon.5:Jiltedduringtheyear,isalsoexcluded.Ifallthesewereincluded, withtheexceptionofthePublic WorksDepartment'svotesforbuildingsandinitialequipment,the costperheadontheaverageattendanceis£6los3d,andonthe averageenrolment£5qsRd.The meanPopulationoftheStatefor thefinancialear1910-TT was 277,92R.Thetotalexpenditureof theEducationDepartmentwas £202,176,orabout14s61d.per headofthepopulation. Now,wedonotask,norhavewe everaskedforthe,endowmentof Religionortheteachingofreligion in,ourschools.What,wedemandis thatsomeremunerationbegivenfor thesecularknowledgeimpartedin our,schools.TheGovernmentpays -andpayswell-forthesecular knowledge,impartedintheState schools; henceiftheCatholic schoolsimpartthesameknowledge, why,musttheybePenalised? Our Catholicpeoplepayratesandtaxes; theypaytheirquotatowhatis afterwardsdoledoutastheEducationgrant,andyettheydonot receiveanyshareoftheirownmoney OurCatholicpeople,arepayingtowardstheupkeepoftheState schools-intaxes,andfortheupkeep ofourownschoolsinschoolfees. Wemaintainthattheamountpaid intaxesshouldcomebackandrelievethemoftheburdenofschool feesthisisourpositionthisis ourjustdemand.Thisdemandhas beenmetinmanycountries,notably inCanada,Belgium,Hollandand Newfoundland.ItsadvocacyinWest AustirkliawouldrequireasoundDemocraticPartythatwould'fearlesslyriseabovetheseaofbigotry andcourageouslysailthroughthe stormsofprejudicewith"equal rightstoallclasses"securelynailed tothemast.
