Theonlywaytogainthereputationofhavingcharmingmannersis tostrivehardforit.Eachandeveryday,andeveryhouroftheda., theworkermustthinkaboutdoing everything,andthisincludesallthe dullthingsathome,inthenicest Possiblemanner. RightRev.ProvostMackintosh, V.G.,ofOurLadyandSt.Margaret'sparish,Glasgow,hasbeenappointedCoadjutortoArchbishopMaguire,withthetitleofArchbishopof Chersona.Theappointmentcarries therightofsuccession.Thenew ArchbishopisanativeofScotland. Hewashornintheneighbourhoodof RoyBridgein847,andeducatedat BlairsCollege,Douay,IssandSt. Sulpice,Paris.Hewasordained priestinParisin1871.

HisfirstappointmentwasatSt. John's,Glasgow.Whileherehehad thecareofthedistrictwhichwas afterwardscreatedintoaseparate parishunderthetitleofOurLady andSt.Margaret's,andofwhichhe wasappointedthefirstpriest-incharge.About1879hewaschosento beDiocesanSecretary,buthereturnedafterashorttimetoSt.Margaret's,wherehehassinceremained. Hewasappointedamemberofthe CathedralChapterin1886,andin 19oR,onthedeathofProvostChisholmofPaisley,wasmadeProvost. ToallCatholicsdevotiontoMary theMotherofGod,was,indeed,a privilege,andwasnotadevotionof recentdate.Itwasanessentialpart ofourholyreligion,andenteredintoeverydetailofourreligioussystem.ThisdevotiontoOurBlessed Ladywasinextricablyassociated withdevotiontoOurBlessedLord. Thismayseemsomewhatstrong languagetothosewhomaintainthat ourvenerationforMaryobscuresor diminishesthehonourandglor.,givenbyustoGod.Onthecontrary, ittendsrathertoincreaseourlove andhonourforGod.Asproofof thistheyhadonlytolookbackon theexamplesetbythesaintswho wereremarkablefortheirloveof theMotherofChrist.Throughtheir holyexamplethefaithwaskept alive,andwemay,dearchildren,in JesusChrist,feelperfectlysafein followingoutinourlivessuchholy

andedifyingexamplesthatweare quitesecure.AtonetimethisdevotiontotheMotherofGodwas calledinquestion.ButtheChurch upheldbydecreeherhonouranddignityintheCouncilofEphesus,in the5thcentury.ItsolemnlydeclaredhertitleastheMotherofGod. HisLordshipproceededinaconvincingmannertoshowthefalse,hereticalpositiontakenbyNestorius. MarywasGod'sspecialchoicetobe themediumfromwhomweshould enjoythegreatblessingof:,alvation.Shewasasexceptionamong thechildrenofmeninbeingfreefrom theslightesttaintofsin,soasin God'sowntimetobecometheMotheroftheDivineh.tdeemer.'therefore,itwouldbeseenwecannotofferherexcessofhonoursinceGod choseheroutfromallhumancreaturestohetheMotherofHisDivineSon.She,andshealone,receivedthatdignitandthuswehonourherasGod'sspecialchoice,beingimmaculateandfreefromthe slightesttaintofsin.Itwasnot fromherownpersonalmeritshewas immunefromsin,butthroughthe loveofChristOurLordshewasraisedtothissublimedignitytohe hischosenMother.Intenderingher honourwedonotdetractfromthe honourduetoGad.TheChurch's teachingshowsclearlythevenerationandhonourwhichisherdue, andalsothesupremehonourwhich belongstoGod.Whenwemakecomparisonofthehonourwepayherit palesintoinsignificancewiththehonourbestoweduponherbyherDivineSon.Letusconsiderthegreat honourpaidherbyGod'sAmbassador,theArchangel,comingdirect fromthethroneofGod,salutingher as"fullofgrace,"apersonsohumbletotheeyesofmenandonewith whomtheLordwaseverpresent. Thispronouncementcame,remember, dearchildren,fromtheofficialof theMostHighGodtoherwhowas chosenagesbefore.Addressingthose abotittobereceivedspecially,they werehappyandfortunateintheir choiceofMaryasanexampleto follow.Intheirprotectorthey wouldfindstrengthandsecurityin timesofdanger,trials,andtemptations.BysoactingtheywerehonouringtheincarnationoftheSonof God.Theirdevotionwasnotmerely tobeapassingone,butadaily imitationofthosevirtueswhichadornedher,evermaintainingintheir livesthesweetodourofvirtues whichMarstheQueenofHeavenpossessed.Inwhateverpositionwefind ourselvesplacedinthisworld,bear wellinmindthevowyouareabout totakeandkeepitever,assuredas timegoesonyouwillbemoreand morestrengthenedandgrowingmore andmorelikeChristOurLordand HisBlessedMother,andatthehour ofdeathherassistancewillbeyours toleadyoutoheaven,ourtrue home.

In1841KilkennyCountyhada populationOf202,420.Thepopulation'in1901.was79,150;in1911it hadfallen.to74,962-adecreaseof 5.3Percent,duringthedecade.The famousCityofKilkennyhad10,609 peoplein1901;lastyearitspopulationwas95less-averyslightdecrease.95.4percent.ofthepeople oftheCountyareCatholics,and 92-5per'cent.ofthecityfolkbelong tothesamereligion.Thenumberof emigrantsfromKilkennyfortheten yearsendingMarch31,1911,was 3,4otr, andwithin6oyears76,964 Persons-or2,00emorethanthetotal.ofthePresentpopulation-emigratedfromthefaircounty.Westmeathhad141,300peoplein1841. Soonafterthe"clearances"were undertakenbythelandlords.The Populationin1851was111,407;in 1861,90,879in1871,78,432;in 1901,61,629;andin1911,59,986. ISITHISTORYWITHOUT TEARS?

Theproblemofwashingandironingdirtypapermoneyappearstobe solvedlaNnewmachineswnichhave beenperfectedintheGovernmentBureauofEngravingandPrintingat Washington(saysthe"IrishCatholic").Therearetwotypesofmachines,andtheyareexpectedtosave about1,000,000dollarsayearfor theGovernment,as60percent.of thepapermoneynowsenttothe Treasuryforredemptioncanbecirculatedagainbywashingit.Mr. Ralph,thedirector,whohasworked withthescientificexpertsonthecreationofthemachines,estimatesit willcost20centstowashandiron athousandnotes.ForeignGovernmentsarewatchingthetests.The Reichsbank,thenationalbankofGermany,recentlysent47,00omarksto thebureau,andthebillswere,calenderedperfectly.ThechemicallaboratoriesofthePublicHealthService willexaminethewashednotesto makesuretheyaregermfree.The generalprincipleofthemoneywashingmachineistopassorwhirlthe dirtynotesthroughsoapywaterto whichachemicalsolutionhasbeen added,andthentodeliverthemto heatedcylinders,whichironand turnthemoutascrispandcleanas thedattheyweremade.

THECRUSADEAGAINSTTHE FLY.

ThelateLadySykes,whosedeath hascausedgreatgriefamongher manyfriends,wasthedaughterof theRightHon.GeorgeAugustus Cavendish-Bentinck.ShemarriedSir TattonSykes,thefifthbaronet,in 1874,andtherewasonlyonesonthememberfor('entralHull-asthe issueofthe'marriage.Shebecamea converttoCatholicismin1882. Deceased,whowasofamostbenevolentdisposition,wasbestknown inHullforherChristmastreatsto theCatholicschoolchildren,which shecontinuedtogivewithouta breakfortwenty-fiveyears.The treatswerethefeatureofthefestiveseasonoftheCatholicschools. Shetookakeenpersonalinterestin them,andmadeapointwhenever Possibleofbeingherselfinattendance.Oftenshewasaccompaniedby Mr.MarkSykes.Healsotooka keeninterestintheHullCatholic schoolchildren,wholookedforward tohislittleaddresses,buttheaffactionofthechildrenforLadySykes wastorching.ShewasunabletoattendthetreatlastJanuaryinconsequenceofill-health.

LadySykesbelongedtotheschool ofintelligentwomenwhohavecome tothefrontthelastfewyears.She activelyassociatedherselfwithreligious,social,literary,anddramaticmovements.Latterlyshehadtakenagreatinterestinforeign events,andshefollowedcloselythe travelsofherson,Mr.MarkSykes, fromwhomsheapparentlyimbibed muchofherinformationonthetrend offoreignaffairs.Shewasparticoo arlyinterestedinthecourseofeven+s latterlyinthe.Mediterranean. Shepossessedliteraryattainments whichbroughtheragooddealtothe frontin.literarycircles,andsherem tributedtomagazines.Herworks included"SidelightsontheWar," publishedin1900"TheNewReign ofTerrorinFrance,"publishedin .1903;andanovel,"AlgernonCasterton,"whichwaspublishedin19()3.

theGod-mantheywouldrecommend thatChristianworship,thusconvictedofbeingwithouthistoricalfoundation,shouldbegivenup,but,on thecontrary,theyhighlyapproveof it.Again,theCatholicChurchteachesthatshewasfoundedbyChrist andendowedbyHimwiththeright toteachandruleovertheChristianpeople.Andinthissenseshe claimsforherPontiffsandBishops thattheirrighttoruleoverusis fromaboveandhasdivinesanction. Modernism,onthecontrary,holds thatthehistoricalChristhadno conceptionthattheworldwasgoing tolastformanycenturiesafterHis death,butanticipatedthatHeHimself,astheMessiah,wouldcome hacktoendthecourseofhumanhistoryinafewNears'time.Henceit neveroccurredtoHimtofounda Church,stilllesstocommunicateto itsBishopsrightswhichHebadno powertocommunicate.Hemerely gatheredroundHimselfafewfollowers,who,undertheleadershipofthe Apostles,weretokeeptogethertill theapproachingdayofjudgment came,Onefurtherconclusionthey deducefromthisviewis,thatthe rightofthePope,andtheBishops overtheirflocks,notbeingderived fromChrist,isderivedfromthepeople,whocouldwithdrawitifthey wished.SimilarlythesevenSacraments,which,accordingtoCatholicism,wereallinstitutedbyourLord, whoalonecouldendowthemwith thepowertogivegracetothesoul, theModernistsregardasmerepious ceremonies,which,astimeranon, theChristianpeopledevisedfor themselvesassymbolsofcommunion,andgotintothehabitofreferringbacktoChristbecauseHewas theFounderoftheirChurch.These threepointsshowhowgreatisthe oppositionbetweenCatholicismand Modernism.Forthosewhowishto learnmore,thefollowingtractsmay berecommendedasusefultobegin with-"Modernism,"byCardinal Mercier(BurnsandOates);"Old TruthsandModernistErrors,"by FatherNorbertJones,C.R.L.(Washbourne);"Modernism:WhatItIs, andWhyItWasCondemned,"by C,S.B.(SandsandCo.); "The Modernist,"bytheRev.Joseph Rickaby,S.J.(CatholicTruthSociety);the"EncyclicalAgainstModernism,"andthe"OathAgainst Modernism,"by.theRev.SydneyF. FromwhatIhavesaidsofar, 1 claimthatIhaveshownthatthe Churchhashadher"Scouts"long beforethepresentmovementbecame Popular.Wemighthaveconcluded antecedentlythatitwouldbeavery wonderfulthingtofindaschemefor thebettermentofmankindN which theChurchhadnottriedandutilisedtothefull,atsomeperiod,ofits existence.Whendealingwithmankindinbatches,youmustknowvery muchbeforeyoucan"teach"the Church.Shecanwellgivea"wrinkle"tomodernphilanthropistsor legislatorsonhowthehumanrace oranysectionofithadbestbetakeninhand.Our"freeeducation," ourPoor-Law.system,ourhospital andinfirmarymanagement,ourinsuranceguilds,arealloldideasof hers,broughtforthagainandreburnished.Inhervariedexperience ofwell-nightwothousandyearsshe hasbeentacklingthesamework,the samelivingproblems,andwithmore orlesssuccess.Sheknowssheisthe onlyinstitutionthatwillpersevere inthetaskandlightentheburdenof thecurseputuponourracebythe originalfall.

Theendoflastweek(saysthe "IrishIndependent"ofJune15th) wasmarkedbyviolentrainand thunderstormsintheMidlandsand SouthofIreland.Therewas:oloss ofhumanlife,butinsomeplaces cattlewerestruckbylightnine,and inmanytownsthestreetsWeefloodedbythedeluge.

InClonakiltyduringtheprogress ofthestormonFriday,avaluable colt,belongingtoMrJ.Donovan,of Beanhill,waskilled.Twocows,the PropertyofMr.T.Hayes,Ballyvoreen,andonebelongingtoMr.J. Hicks,nearRosscarbery,werealso killedbylightning.

InQueenstownthelightningdischargeswereveryvivid.Treeswere uprootedbythestorm,andtelegraphwireswerebrokendown,while fusingoccurredonanextensivescale intheTelephoneExchangeandat SpikeandHaulbowline.

Rev.C.A.Jenkinsclaimedthat "theOrangeInstitutionwasessentiallynecessary,becauseitwasonly throughsuchaninstitutionthat Protestantismcouldhaveacommon platform."Well,ifProtestantism mustrelyontheOrangeSocietyfor acommonplatform,thesoonerit givesuptheghostthebetter.

Theyhadzealousprieststheyhad holyandpiousnuns,teachingBrothers,andreligiousnurses,butthe. neededafervent,active,energeticlaity-theyneededeloquence,teal, prayerandworkindailylifeinthe street,inthehome,inthehalls,in thepress,ineverydepartmentof publiclife.Layzealbegotpriestly zeal;priestsandnunshadlayblood intheirveins,fortheywereborn laymenandlaywomen.Azealous laitywouldgivetotheChurchzealousclergyandreligiousnuns.The layelemntintheChurchwasessentialtoherexistenceintheworlil. "LaymenareGod'scoadiltorc," saidSt.Paul,totheCorinthians: "Bearyeoneanother'sburdens,for .soshallyoufulfilthelawofGod.''
