Thepurposelessgossipisbadenough,but,thereisaworsetype,the gossipwhohasamission,who "thinksitherduty"todoharm. Suchagossipasthishappenedintoachurch-ofallplacestoplyher art!-andapure,sweetvoicein thechoirheldherattention.She thoughtsherecognisedit.Aformer schoolmatehadjustsuchavoice. Butifitweretheschoolmate,she shouldnotbesinginginachoir.Aftertheinnocentschoollifehadcome anotherwhentheyoungsingerbad takenthewrongroadbutsheturnedback,andleavingthehomeof hergirlhoodshewenttoabigcity tobeginanew.Sheworkedhardfor anhonestliving,andattendedchurch regularly.Hervoicebroughther aninvitationtojointhechoir.She wasashappyasanyonecouldbeunderthecircumstances-untilthegossipfoundherout.Repulsedbythe virtuous,hereffortstoleadagood lifesetatnaughtbyworldlyjudgment,thepoorgirlturnedhersteps oncemoreintothedownwardpath thatwas,soeasytofollow.Andshe neveragainturnedback Thereisamistakenideathatonwomengossip.ThefactIsthere aremenwhocanoutclassanywomeninlengthoftongueandwillingnesstouseit.Anypoliticalcampaignprovesthisassertion.Some partyleadersrunthewholerange fromgossiptovituperationandslander,andiftheydonotsucceedin establishinganythingelsetheycertainlydoestablisnareputationfor beingcharacter-killers.Inlessarduoustimesmanymenspendtheir leisureintrivialdiscussionsofsocial folliesorofthefailingsoftheir fellowmembersofvariousorramisatons.Debatesonsubjectsworth

whilearerareinstoresandoffices andclubrooms,'Evencurrentissues thatoughttobeofinterestareneglected,whileintellectdwindleson adietofgossip.

Undertheaboveheading,Mr. GeorgeH.Jessop(authorof"DesmondO'Connor,"etc.)contributes totheAprilissueof"Munsey'sMagazine"anotablearticleinwhich hedescribeshisvisittoLourdes. Whatappealedtohimmostwasthe faithofthepilgrims,allofwhom werepurifiedandexaltedtotheirsojourntothefamousgrotto.Through thissublimepowerofbringinghap- pinesstoitsdevotees,Lourdes,he thinks,wouldhavewellfulfilledits mission"eventhoughneveracure couldbeplacedtoitscredit." "But,"headds,"thisisfarfrom thecage.Ascribethecausetowhat Yonwill,curesdooccurforwhich sciencecannotaccount."Hethen Proceedstotellofeninstancewhich cameunderhisownpersonalohser- vation.Onthejourneyhespokea fewwordsofsympathytoacrippledgirl,whoseextremepallorand emaciationmadehimwonderthat shehadlivedthroughthelong wearinessoftravelling.Shesuffered Fromtuberculosisofthespine,and rhysicianshadgivenuphercaseas hopeless,oneofthemwhowaswith thepilgrimagesayingthatshecoufd notliveanhour.Sohadwasher appearanceandconditionthatbefore Lourdeswasreachedhershrunken framehadbeenanointedfordeath. Sir,-Inarecentissueyoupublishedanaccountofwhatisbeingdone inAmericainregardtoCatholic colonisation,andasked,"Whycannotwedowhatothersaredoing?"

Tomymind,thereisnoreason whywecannotdosomethinginthis direction.Anattempt,forwhichI waspartlyresponsible,wasmadea fewyearsagotoformaCatholic settlement,andifallwhocouldhave helpedhaddoneso,insteadofcriticisingthosewhodidmaketheattempt,Ihavenodoubtbutthata nourishingCatholiccolonywouldbe inexistenceto-day. Idonotintendtodwellontheadvantagesofsuchacolony,becauseno one,withtheexceptionoftheaforesaidcritics,hasanydoubtaboutthe matter,andeveryonemustadmit thatitisfarbetterforCatholics goingonthelandtosettleincoloniesinsteadofbeingscatteredhere andtherealloverthecountry.I say,then,letusmakeanotherattempt,andifalluniteandgivea hand,wewillperhapsbesuccessful thistime.Thereare,ofcourse,many difficultiesintheway,butsothere areineverybigundertakingyet wemayreasonablyhopetoovercomethornifwestrivehardenough. Now,therearemanyquestions tobeconsidered,butIproposeto dealwithtwoonlyatpresent.Firstly,whereandhowarewegoingto nettheland,seeingthatallGovernmentlandsarethrownopenforpublicselection,andinmostcasesthere areseveralapplicantsforeachblock? IntheUnitedStates,wheremost oftheunoccupiedagriculturallandis heldbyprivatecompanies,thedifficultyofgettinglandforcolonisationpurposes,doesnotexisttothe

cameextentasitdoeshere,asitis onlyamatter'ofpayingthesum thecompanyputsonitsland..In thisStatethereisonlyonecompanywithanyverylargeareaof landforsale,andthatistheMidlandflailwayCompany.,Iaminformed,however,thatthiscompany stillhasoveronemillionacresof goodlandforsale,andpossii,lyin theeventofnegotiationswiththe Governmentfailing,asuitablearea maybeobtainedfromtheMidland Company,eitherunimprovedorpartlyimproved.Atthepresenttime thiscompanyisengagedinimprovinganumberoffarmsforsaleto immigrants,butIhavebeeninformedthatifrepresentationsweremade onbehalfofacolonysuchaswe proposetoestablish,anumberof improvedfarmscouldprobablybe obtainedfromthecompanyonthe sametermsasthefarmsnowin courseofpreparation.Thesefarms containfromeootoSooacres,all first-classlandlooacresareclearedreadyfortheplough,andthebalanceofthetimberisrung.Theboundariesofthefarmtarefenced,a houseofthreeormoreroomserectedandadamexcavated.Theprice variesfrom£3toLeanacre,and thetermsare:10percent.deposit, andthebalanceinyearlyinstalmentscovering20years,bearinginterestate-S.percent.Thisscheme atfirstglancelooksveryattractive, butongoingintofiguresIamafraid itwillbefoundtobebeyondthe Pocketsofmostofthosewhowould bemostlikelytojoinourproposed colony.Wemaybeabletogetunimprovedlandfromthecompanyat areasonablerate,butitmustbe borneinmindthatsettlersonMidlandlandshavenottheadvantage oftheAgriculturalBank,andwithouttheassistanceofthatsplendid institution,Iamafraidourproposed colonywouldnothemuchofasuccess.

InregardtothesecondquestionWherewilltheproposedcolonybe? -mypreviousremarksinreference tothedifficultyofobtaininglandapplychieflytothedry,orwheatdistricts,whereIwouldpreferthecolonytobe,forthereasonthatit issomucheasierto'getawheat farmintoareproductivecondition thanafarminthewetdistricts, wherefruitand'potatogrowing, dairying,pig-raising,etc.,is.arried On.

Thereisthistobesaid,however, infavourofthewetdistricts-that onceafarmbecomesreturneroducMgitwillprobablypaybetterthan theaveragewheatfarm,andt:e.returnismorereliable.Intheevent ofadecisiontoestablishthecolony inthemoistlandsoftheSouth-West thedifficultyinregardtogettingthe landwouldnotbesogreatforthe reasonthatitisnotrushedatthe presenttime.Astheblockswould necessarilybesmaller,thesettlers wouldbeclosertogether,which wouldbeagreatadvantage,bothto Priestandpeople. Tamconvinced, however,that,providingtheland canbeobtained,thecolonyismore likelytohesuccessfulifestablished somewhereinthewheatbelt. Spacedoesnotrermitmetogo filrtberintothematter.butIcertainlythinkthatnotimeshouldbe lostinformingagood,strong catholicColenisationSociety,whose dutyitshallhetoe'ivethismatter earnestconsiderationanddevise waysandmeansofestablishinga

successfulCatholiccolonyorcoloniesontheland.Suchasociety couldalsotakeintoconsideration theencouragementofCatholicimmigrationtotheseshores.Withthis objectinviewIwouldsuggestthat ameetingofallinterestedbecalled withoutdelay.

DevotiontotheRosaryinChinais enkindledandkeptalivechiefly throughtheardentzealeftheheads offamilies,whoteachthisbeautiful formofprayertotheirlittlechildren,exhortingthemtobefaithfulto itthroughoutlife.

"Veryoften,"saysavenerable missionaryBishop,whospentmany yearsinChina,"havemotherscome tomewiththeirlittleonesandsaid: 'Thisboywillbeagoodchildbecauseheknowshowtorecitehis Rosary.'OnsuchoccasionsIhad alwaysawordofpraiseandencouragementforthechild,andaftermakinghimapresentofanewpairof Rosarybeads,Iwouldsendhimoff glowingwithsmiles.

"ButinChina,beitremembered, devotiontotheHolyRosaryisnot onethatgrowscold_withyears.Not onlythechildren,butnearlyallthe Catholicwomenandalarge(majorityofthemen,recitetheirrosary dailsAndtodesignateatepidand lukewarmperson,ChineseChristians knowofnobetterormoreforcible expressionthan"Kettig-no-Nern" ("Hedoesnotsayhisrosary").

POSITIVEORNEGATIVEMORALITY?

Weverymuchfearthatoursis becomingmoreandmoretheageof theoreticalabsurditiesandpractical folly.Somemaintainthatpositive moralityisthegreatremedyfor allmoralevils,andhencethey wouldconsign"Thoushaltnot"of ScripturetothemodernLimboof effetesystems.Itwouldbeuseless totellthemthatthisstudiedavoidanceofnegativesisitselfanegative equivalenttothoushaltnotsay "Shaltnot."

Butthis,asMr.G.K.Chesterton remarksinarecentissueofthe "EyeWitness,"isbutasuperficial objection,andhedoubtswhether thosewhopreachonlypositivemoralitycareajotforevensuperficiallogic. Itisspeciallyurgedinconnectionwitheducationandweare toldtoofferachildtheaffirmative idealandneverthenegativecommandmentcommonlyattachedto it.Thuswemustnotforbidlittle Arthurtopullhisuncle'snose. Anaccidentwhichcastquitea gloomoverthedistricthappenedjust LattsideofGoornallingtownabout o'clockonMonday,whichresulted inMr.J.Gorman,senr.,losinghis life.Frominformationreceived,it appearsthatdeceasedwentintoGoomailingwithafour-horseteam.He calledatthestation,andafterwards loadedtwotonsofsuperphosphates fromaneighbour.Howtheaccident occurredi.amystery,butitissurmisedthathewasstandingonthe singleshaftsofthewaggon,andin turningthehorsesheslippedand fell,aswhenfoundthefrontwheel .-Jfthevehiclewasstandingonhis chest,thehorseshavingcometoa standstill.Whenpickedupdeceased wasinanunconsciousconditionand succumbedtohisinjuriesanhour later.

DeceasedwasbornatWongaminein December,1856,andhadresidedin thatdistrictuntillately,whenhe tookuplandintheGoomallingdistrict,andhadbeenengagedworking it,andintendedtoreturnhomeon Saturdaynext.Hewashighlyrespectedthroughoutthedistrict,and leavesthreesons,allsingle,five daughters,Mrs.G.Lawler,MrsC. This"federation"hasprepared literatureforgeneralcirculation whichmisrepresentstheaimsand objectsofthiscouncil.Itclaimsexceptionalprivilegesnotconcededto artyotherreligiousbody.Itdemands thatthenationalsystemof-primary educationshallgiveplacetothediscardeddenominationalsystem,and thatgrantsofpublicmoneyshallbe madetosuchschools.Whileprofessingtodenouncesecularschools,it aidstheenemiesofallreligionsby preventingevensuchstoriesasthat ofthe"ProdigalSon"tobereadby theStateschoolchildreninschool hours,thoughtheirownRomanCatholicchildrenandallotherchildren whoseparentsobjectarecarefully guardedbyaconscienceclause. "Thatthisprovisionalcommittee oftheAustralianCatholicFederationobserveswithgreatregretthe attackmadebytheScriptureCampaignCouncilondenominational andreligiouseducation.

"Thatitisamostunfortunate thingthatadocumentpurportingto speakinthenameofmostofthe Protestantchurchesshouldspeakof religiouseducationas'thediscarded denominationalprinciple,'andthat itshouldsetitselftodefendand maintainasystemofpurelysecular instruction,fromwhichallreligious teachingislegislativelybarred.

ThewomenofIrelandhavesofar takenlittlepartintheheactivities, Partlybecausetheypreferinfluence tc,self-assertion,andpartlybecause they,nodoubt,thinkthatthereare alreadymorethanenoughpoliticians amongthemen.Withinthelasttwo ears,however,Irishwomenhave Soddenlydecidedtouniteandcombinetheirforcesfortheirownbettermentandthebettermentoftheir country.Butthisscheme,likenearlyeveryotherIrish.scheme,goes "contrary-wise."Irishwomenhave arisen,nottotrytheirstrengthagainstthe-men,nottowringvotes andasserttheirequalityandsuperiority,buttojoinbandswiththe men,tohelpthem,andtosupplementwithfeminineskillwheremasculineskillfallsshort.Irishwomen arenotsuffragettes,normildersuffrarists,norfeministsofanykind, theyaremerelywomencombiningso astodobettertheirwomentwork. AtthegeneralmeetingoftheIrish AgriculturalSocietyinNoe,Mr. GeorgeRussellreadapaperinwhich hepointedouttheworkwaitingto beloneifthewomenofIreland woulddoit.Thisideahefollowed upinanarticleappearinginthesociety'sorgan,the"IrishHomestead,"ofwhichheistheeditor,on Nit'..r.aary22,1910,"Migrationof ishwomenfromtheFarm."In responsetohissuggestionsanumberofletters,writtenbyIrishwomentothe"Homestead,"showed thatalreadysimilarthoughtshad beenintheirminds.Thefirstbranch oftheUnitedIrishwomenwasfoundedleJune,T91".byMrs.Harold Lett.atBre..inthecountyofWexfordIntheautumnofthesame yearMrs.Lettcalledameetingof womeninDublin,andthesociety wasformallyestablished."TheconstitetionoftheUnitedIrishwomen," toquoteagainthepamphlet,isas follows"Thesocietyconsistsofa centralunionandbranches,thewhole governedbyanExecutiveCommittee.Theworkofthecentralunion is1.!r-tofalltoorganisethewomen ofIrelandbytheformationofbranches,astheparentbodyofthecooperativemovementhassolargely lisucceededinorganisingthemen.It rues alsoasalinkbetweenthe rancheswhensoformed.Those wishingtojointhecentralunionas individualmembersareproposedand secondedbyexistingmembersand areelectedbyamajorityofvotesat ameetingoftheExecutiveCommittee.Theirannualsubscriptionis halfacrown.Branchesareformed in-ruraldistrictscomprising'allthe womenintheneighbourhood,and aregovernedbyacommitteecomposedofthepresident,vice-president,

Thework whichtheUnitedIrishwomenproposetodoinRuralIrelandmaybe consideredunderthreeheads-AgricultureandIndustries,DomesticEconomy.SocialandIntellectualDevelopment."

TheheadquartersoftheUnited IrishwomenareinPlunkettHouse, MerrionSquare,wheretheyhave beengivenageneroushospitality(by theAgriculturalAssociation.Butit isnotinPlunkettHousethatthe chiefworkoftheIrishwomenlies. Theirstandardiscarriedthrough thecountry,anditisinremote districts,wheretheircominghas broughtnewlife,thattheirconcern really.is.Whereverabranchhas beenformedsomethinghas'heendone. Existingindustriesarestrengthened, orotherssuitabletotheplaceestablished.Hereavillagehallhas beenbuiltorimproved,theretrees plantedforafruit-growingorchard. Inoneneighbourhoodthepeople havebeenencouragedandhelpedto makevegetablegardensbytheircottages,inanothertoimprove,their poultrytrade.Thedressquestion hasalsobeenattacked.Someare strivingtorestorethegoodold work-a-daydressoftheIrishcountrywomen,whichwaswarm,serviceable,aswellaspicturesque.The mainideaisthatthefutureofIrelandmustbeworkedoutinthe homes.Itisinthehomes,therefore,thatthewomenconcentrate theirchiefefforts,and,infact,all theireffortsindirectlytendthere. Fortunately:theyhaverealisedwhere liesthedifficultyintouchingonthe homequestion.Foranoutsiderto comeintoahomeandgiveadvice andsuggestthisimprovementand thatchange,isnotawaythatwill leadver,far.Everywoman'scottageishercastle,andshehasaperfectrighttokeepitasshelikes, andtactlessinterferenceisamere impertinence.Butwhenallthewomenofadistrictupitewiththeone endofimprovingtheirhomelife, theyarereadytotakecounseltoge- therandreceivesuggestionsfrom thosewhoaremorecompetentthan themselves.Withthespiritofcooperationthusfosteredamongthe womenwillariseaspiritofpersonal pride.Nowomanwillcareforher ownhometobelesswellkeptthan herneighbours',norherhusbandand childrentobelesswellcaredfor. Thisspiritwillspreadfurthertoa localspirit,andeachdistrictwill viewithothersandwillbecome jealousofitsgoodname.Inseeking thustobuildupthehomelifein IrelandtheUnitedIrishwomenare notstartingforthonuntrodden ways.Theyarenotbringinganew schemeofcivilisationtoapeople

whoarewithoutone.Theyarebut seekingtorestorethewell-beingof thepast.

LongagoIrishrurallifewasata highlevel.Goodclotheswereworn ofmaterialthatwashomemanufacturedandhome-made.Thefood eatenwaswholesomeandnourishing andsuppliedmainlyfromthefarm. Dayswerebusy,formuchworkhad tobedone:Theyweremerryalso, formusic,dancing,andsongformed Partofthedailylife.Inthecomfortable,roomykitchensoftheoldfashionedhousesneighboursmettogetherofanevening,andtalkedand laughed,andlistenedtothestorytellers.Thetraditionalcustoms werepreservedfromonegeneration toanother.Inspiteofstressand difficultytheoldwayoflifecontinuedingreatmeasureuptothefamine.Thatterribletimebrokethe spiritofthepeople,andtheyhave neverentirelyrecoveredit.Tohelp torevivethatspiritistheself-proposedworkoftheUnitedIrishwomen -aworkthathiesbeenwellbegun bytheIrishAgriculturalSocietyand theGaelicLeague.

Butwhatofthemoraleffectproducedbytheideasandworkofthe UnitedIrishwomen?Industriallyand economicallytheruralpopulation mustbenefitbycarryingouttheir schemes.Itis,however,thenational,characterthatisthegroundworkofnationallife.HeretheUnitedIrishwomen'sprincipleisselfhelpandself-independence,therelianceontheindividualratherthan onoutsideassistance.Atthesame timethewomenarebroughttojoin forcesandtohaveconfidenceinone another.

Withregardtothequestionofwomen'ssuffragethathrsnowentered thedomainofpolitics,theUnited Irishwomenwouldseemtoprove thatwomenhavealargefieldfor theirenergieswithoutencroaching ontheaffairsofmen.Hadthey workedthatfieldwelltherewouldbe to-daynoneedfortheUnitedIrishwomen,andperhapstherewould havebeennoSuffragettes.InreligiontheeffortoftheUnitedIrishwomenmustbefelt.Thereligionof acountryistiedtothehearthstone. Ifgivenperfectfamilylife,religionis safe.

Historyrepeatsitself.Inthedays oftheIrishcivilisation,beforethe NormanConquest,thewomenof Irelandheldanimportantposition, bothinthelawandintheeyesof men.Perhapsinnoothernation didtheyoccupysuchaPlace.Intime ofstressanddifficultytheytook partinthegreatcouncils,notbecausetheyhadforcedtheirwayin, butbecausethemen,valuingthe acutenessoftheirminds,invited theirhelp.Nowtheco-operativemen ofIrelandareinvitintthewomento jointheircouncils.Letushopethat themoderndaughtersofErinwillbe aswillingandascapableaswere theirsistersofanotherageintheir cordialresponsetothecalloftheir country.
