Answer-Andwhynot,then,for men?

Eitherreligionistrueoritisfalse. Ifitistrue,itisastrue(andconsequentlyasgood)formenasfor women.Ititisfalse,itisnobetterforwomenthanformenbecause falsehoodisnotgoodforanyone. Yes,certainly,"religionisavery goodthingforwomen,"butalso andforthesimla-reasons,itisgood formen.

Likewomen,menhavepassions, oftenveryviolli:tifrs,tostruggle against,and1' omen,mencannot conquerthemwithoutfearandthe loveofGod,withoutthosepowerfulmeansthatreligionalonecanfurnish.Formen,aswellaswomen, lifefullofdifficultandpainful dittiesdutiestowardGod,toward society,towardtheirfamilies,to,vardthemselves.

Formenasforwomen,thereisa Godtoworshipandtoserve,animmortalsoultosave,vicestoshun, virtuestopractice,aparadiseto gain,ahelltoavoid,afinaljudgmenttofear,anever-menacing deathtobepreparedtomeet.

Foronesexthesameasforthe other,Christdiedonthecross,and Hiscommandmentsregardthemboth alike.

Religionis,then,asgoodformen asforwomen,and,ifthereisadifference,itisthatreligioniseven moreindispensabletomenthanto women.Theyare,infact,exposed tomoredangers,theycandowrong moreeasily,andtheyaremoresurroundedbybadexamples,particularlyasregardsloosemorals,intemperance.andtheneglect.ofreligious duties.Religionisgoodfor everyone.ItIsespeciallynecessary forthosewhosayitwasnotintendedforthem.

Therehasbeennothingsensational orunexpectedinMr.Asquith'scareer.Heemerged,withanaturalinevitableness.Hecame,hesaw,he conqnered.Opportunityns"erfound himunequaltothetask.Whenin theParnelltrialRussell,owingto indisposition,leftthecross-examinationofMacdonald,ofthe"Times," tohint,itwasfeltthatitwasa gravemisfortune,forherewasthe cruxofthecase.Ifthiswentwrong allmightgowrong.WhenMr.Asquithsatdownhehadshatteredthe "Times"case,andmadehisownreputation.Whenin1892Mr.Gladstoneentrustedhimwiththefinal attackontheSalisburyGovernment, hedidsowithhesitation.Butafter ithehadnohesitationinmaking himHomeSecretary.Mr.Asquith, infact,isthemanwhoneverfails. Heisalwaysintellectuallybigger thanhistask.

"Jesuit-KnightoftheLegionof Honour-andLeper."Thesearethe titles(saysanAmericanpaper), whichFatherIsidoreDupuy,ofthe BetsileoMissionofMadagetscar, couldplaceonhisvisitingcards.Onlyafewmonths4,enoyordwasreceivedattheFrenchheadquartersof thePropagationoftheFaiththata memberoftheParissocietyhad contractedleprosyinIndia.His namehasnotbeengiventothepublicasyet,andnowFatherDupuy addshistotheelonglistofthose heroicmartyrstocharity.Whenthe factwasknownhewasisolated,but hemadenocomplaint,thoughitwas hardtogiveuphisbelovedlabours. Aninterestinvlectureon"Wireless Telegraphy,"theproceedsofwhich aretobedevotedtothereliefofthe relativesofthevictimsoftheTitanicdisaster,wasgiveninBelvedereCollege,Dublin,recently,b., theRev.H.V.Gill,S.J.,whowas introducedtoalargo'audiencebythe Rev.Fr.Brennan,S.J.,Rector.An admirableseriesofslides,whichwere reproducedfromphotographstaken bytheRev.F.Browne,S.J.,on boardtheill-fatedTitanic,were shown.

Havingreferredtothesavingof lifeeffectedthroughwirelesstelegraphyinconnectionwiththedisaster,FatherGillsaiditwasatriumphoftheprogressofscience,and thowedthatastheworldprogressed andthe'dangersofprogressincrease,soalsothemeansofmeetingthesedangersincreaseinlike manner.

Gillexplainedthedifferencebetween highvoltageandlowvoltageelectricity,anditsmagneticeffects.Describingtheinductioncoil,hesaid thatitspresentformwasduetoDr. Callan,ofMaynoothCollege.Heillustratedtheproductionofelectric sparkandofwavemotioneffectsby soundexperiments.Theeffectof soundwavesonasensitiveflamewas alsoshown,andthevibrationcftimingforksinharmonywitheachether. APRACTICALDEMONSTRATION.

Withaworkingmodelaraetical demonstrationoftheMarconisystemwasgiven,andtheimportance ofearthconnectionsinlongdistance) radiographydemonstrated,thelecturermentioningthatwirelessmessagescouldnowbetransmitted6000 miles.FatherGillmentionedinconnectionwiththeworkbeingcarried onatUniversityCollegethatitwas hopedtheywouldsoonbeableto formagreatcentreofresearchthere onatmosphericel,ctricity.

Thelectureconcludedwithasecond seriesofslidesshowingapplication.. andcontemplatedextentoftheMarconisystemofstations,andreproductionsofthesuccessivemessages sentoutfromtheTitanicbeforeshe' sank.

Mr.E.J.Brady,oneofourAustralianpoets,gaveanaddressunder teauspicesoftheKalgoorlie'branch oftheA.N.A.lastweek.TheaddressdealtwithmanyphasesofAustralianlife.Heemphasisedthereeponsibilityofdevisingmeansto populatethevastuninhabitedspaces ofourcontinent,andinthrilling languageurgedAustralianstounceasinelystrivefortheachievement oftheirhighideal-thuphuildineof amightywhitenationunderthe SouthernCross.Hearguedthatif theimmigrantswerewhiteitmade littledifferencewhichcountrythey camefrom,becausetherewasimmediateneedofpopulation,especiallewhenoneconsideredthegreatpoliticalandeconomicalchangesoper-

atineinthosenotveryremotecountries,wheresomeBoomillionsofthe earth'sdark-skinneddenizensdwelt. TherewheretheChurchfitslikea gloveintotheRepublicanformof government,andenjoysthefullest liberty,withouteitherStatepatronageorStateopposition,whereno manispenalisedonaccountofhis creedandnoquestionsareaskedas towhatKirkSoubelongto-there theChurch'sgrowthhasbeensimply amazing.Wemaysafelyreckonthe Catholicsat12to14millions.Conversionstakeplaceattherateof nearly30,000ayearinallranksof society.Thesefiguresarenotgiven atrandom,butarestrictlyaccurate,compiledastheyarefromparochialanddiocesanregisters.This marvellousharvestofconvertsisdue inlargemeasuretotheuntiringzeal andlabourofthePaulistFathers (foundedbythatremarkableconvert, FatherHecker)whoconductsmissionsfornon-Catholicsinalmostall thediocesesoftheStates.Manyof thecitiesandsomeoftheStatesare overwhelminglyCatholiceverywhere Catholicsoccupymanyofthemost responsiblepositionsinpublicservice,andincommerceandbusiness theyaretheequalsofothers; the Cardinals,prelatesandclergyofthe Churcharetreatedwiththeutmost diffidenceasmenofhighcharacter andinfluenceanditisfreelyadmittedthatofallChristianbodiesin America,theCatholicChurchis easilythemostlively,zealous,and Powerful,theChurchthatmakesan impressiononsociety,andalone keepsalivethesupernaturallifeof Christianity.Inshort,thereisno gettingawayfromthefactthat America,insofarasitisChristian, israpidlybecomingCatholic.

Theconcludingstagesoftherecent sportsmeetingheldbythemembers Oftheabovesocietyterminatedon Saturdaynightlast,whenasocial eveningwasheldtocelebratethedistributionofprizesgainedbythe '-ictorsintheirfriendlycontests. Theseatingaccommodationofthe AlexanderHallwastaxedtoits fullestextenttoaccommodatethose whorespondedtotheinvitations senttothem,andwhentheevening'senjoymentcommencedthescene wasapicturesqueone.Willinghands haddrapedtheinteriorofthebuildingwithflagsandbuntingofevery huefloatingaboveallwasthe belovedredandblackcoloursofthe society,colourswhichhaveonmore thanoneoccasionbeencarriedto victory.Thestagewasartistically decoratedwithevergreens,which servedafittingset-offtothescene below.Thevariousmetropolitan Catholicsocietieswerewellrepresented,thusbringingaboutafeelingofrood-fellowship,whichtends tohindthemclosertogetherinthe coursetheyarepursuing,andtobe insympathywithoneanotherin theirvariousundertakings.

Thereareyoungmenandeoung womeninAustraliawhohave obeyedGod'scallwithpromptitudeandalacrity.SomehavebecomePriests;othersarentemeersofReligiousOrders.Butthe harvesttobegatheredisavast one,andthelabourerswhoare alreadyatworkarefewinnumber.TheYearsarespeedingon, anddeathwillcometocallthem onebyonetotheirreward.The work,too,increasesastimeadvances,anditisalreadygreater thantheirstrengthcancope with.MayGodsendmorereaperstotheharvest-suchmustbe ourearnestdailyprayerduring thismonthattheSacredHeart, andmayChristianparentsdo whattheycantofostervocations tothePriesthoodortotheReligiousstateamongtheirchildren,andthussecureasfaras theymaythefinalsalvationof themselvesandoftheporeyoung soulsgivenbytheAlmightyinto theircharge.

WHATISAVOCATION?

Thevocationitself,eithertothe PriesthoodortotheReligious State,beineacallfrontGod,isina veryspeeialmannertheworkof DivineGrace;neverthelessparents andteacherscandomuchtowards inepiringandfosteringvocationsin theheartsofthosecommittedto theircharge.

Firstofall,a"vocation"means acalltoacertainstateoflifeand inCatholicliteraturethewordgenerallymeansacalltothehigher statesoflife,namely,tothePriesthood,ortooneoftheReligiousOrders.Tohaveatruevocation,we musthave,atleastintheirbeginnings,thenecessarytalentsanddispositionstofulfiltheobligationsof theparticularstatetowhichweare called.

Secondly,asGodisOurCreator andourlastend,Healonehasa righttodisposeofourlivesandactions.Godknowsbestourdispositions,ourtalents,ourwants,and thekindoflifethatismostsuitable forus henceHealonecan giveusthenecessarygracestofulfil thedutiesofthatstatetowhichHis Providencecallsus.

Tiairdlethefollowingofourvocationisthesurestmeanstoplease God.toavoidsin,topractisevirtue,andinsureourEternalSalvetiea.Thereisnothing,then,on whichsalvationsomuchdependsas onthechoiceofvocationhenceparentsandteachersareboundtogive thoseundertheirchargeeveryfacilitytofellowtheirvocations.Both St.AugustineandSt.Thomassay thatpredestinationisnothingelse thanthearrangementofthemeans

bywhichGodleadstheelecttoEternalhappiness.Now,vocationisnot onlytheprincipalofthesemeans, butitmaybesaidtocomprisethem all.Thevocationistosalvation whatthekeystoneistothearch whichitsupportsand,therefore-. tovarythemetaphor-amanoutof hisvocationislikeafishoutofwater,orlikeadislocatedjoint.

Occasionallywemeetafewof thesefishesoutofwater,whenwe arebroughtfacetofacewiththose whohavebeenpreventedfromfollowingtheirvocationbyfoolishand over-fondparents.Asarule,these blightedvocationscausebitterness totheparentsandrelatives,aswell astothepoorvictimswhowereturnedawayfromthepathtowhich Godcalledthem.

THESIGNSOFVOCATION.

Godmakesknownourvocationto usinvariousways.Inthefirstplace, HemightmanifestHimselfimmediatelyorbysomeprodigy.Thusit waswithSt.Paul,whomHestruck downonthewaytoDamascus;with St.Matthew,towhamHesaiddirectly,"FollowMe;"withtheother Apostleswhowerecalledinasimilarmanner,andwithmanyother saintstowhomGodmanifestedHis Willinsomeextraordinarywee.

Wedonot,however,lookforthese veryspecialsignsofvocationto-dan forthen'areothermeansbywhich Godordinarilycallssoulstothe Apostolate.Theprincipalofthese isacertainattractionwhichthe higherstateoflifehasforus,and which,onreflection,producesataste andaninclinationonourpart.It maybecalledastill,smallvoiceby whichGodspeakstothesoul.This maytaketheformoftheattraction ofsentimentortheattractionofreason;theformerisamarkedlove andtasteforthehigherlife.Itis Godspeakingtotheheart,captivatingthewill,andgentlyleadingthe soulonwardandupward.Andthe attractionofreasonisalightwhich enlightensthemindbyreflection, showsittheexcellenceandtheadvantagesofavocation,anddeterminesittoembraceit.

Wemayalsofindgreathelpinthe decidingofourvocationfromthe goodadviceofothersespeciallyof wiseandprudentconfessors.Andit sometimeshappensthatallsortsof events,happyorunhappy,andeven humanmotives,domuchtoleada soultowardsacertainvocation.But itmatterslittle,asSt.FrancisDe Salesremarked,whatmotivedeterminedthevocation,providedwepurifyitandareresolvedtopersevere andtoendwellforitisprincipally ourperseveranceandactualdispositionswemustlooktoratherthan thecommencementorthemotive whichdeterminedourvocation.To becalledtotheReligiousStateor tothePriesthood,isagreatgrace tolistenandobeythatcall isagreatmeansofobtaining superabundantgracesfor ourselvesandothersandtopersevereuntildeathinfaithfullydischargingthedutiesofourvocations istoheassuredofacrownofglory inHeaven.Theadvantagesofthis higherlifearemanySt.Bernard enumeratesnine:-

Itisunnecessarytoremindour readersoftheextentoftheharvest andthescarcityofthelabourersin theWestAustraliancornerof Christ'svineyard.Someofour Priestsareinchargeoflargedistrictsthatwillwarrantdivisionand subdivisioninafewyearstime;land settlementisgoingaheadbyleaps andbounds,andthoseofourCatholicpeoplewhoventure"outback" areindangerofhavingtheirfaith weakenedandlostbecauseofSpiritualdestitution.Theconstant.absencefromMassonSundays,and thelongintervalsbetweenthereceptionoftheSacramentstendtomake themostferventamongstuscarelessandneglectful.Thusalukewarmgenerationspringsup,arailedmarriageeasilyfollows,andthe inevitableresultsinafteryearsmay beseeninthenon-Catholic"Murphys,""O'Neillse""Moynihans,"etc., whoseparentsorgrandparentswe sometimessuspectofhaviner"picked thebones"or"drankthesoup."But thesefineoldIriehCatholicnames, insteadofbeingP'?tstestantisedthroughSouperism,graduallyslipped awayinvariousdirectionslikeso manyshepherdlesssheep.Itismore thanprobablethattheneglectofa vocationtothePriesthoodhada farreachingeffectonthislossto theCatholicFaith.Ifallthosewho hadtruevocationscorrespondedwith God'sgrace,weshouldhaveaPlentifulsupplyofPriestsforthisvast territory.Thelossessustainedin thepastcanhardlyberemediedto sitdownmerelydeploringtheselosseswouldbeonlyawasteoftime.

HOWWECANHELP. Thepresentisours,andmuchofthe futurecanbedirectedandmoulded byus.Weought,then,tocommence duringthismonthofJunebyjoininginearnestprayerbeseeching Godtosendlabourersintothese fieldswhichareripeningfast;none ofuscanreasonablerefusetogive ourprayersforthisgreatintention. ThevisitoftheYoungIustralia Leaguecreatedagooddealofinterestherelastweek.Theboyswere receivedwithamostcordialwelcome,andtreatedwiththekindest hospitality.Mr.Simonswascongratdatedonallsidesonthemagnificentsuccessofhistourandon themarkedimprovementofhisyouas charges.Theladswerebilletedout areenesttheirhospitableBeeeriey admirers,andmademanyhomes glee!withtherecitaloftheirtravels.Itwasveryevidentthatthe trierwasnomereidleholidaytrip,

butthattheyoungfellowshadbeen taughttoobservecloselyandappreciateintelligentlythemanywonderfulsightsandsceneswhichthey hadwitnessed.Theentertainmintin theeveningwas,ofcourse,agreat success.Theboyspresentedingood styleseveralAmericanitemsthey badpickedupintheirtravels,but itmustbesaidthequalityofthe noveltieswasbynomeansuptothe standardoftheirnativeproductions. Thebandhasimprovedineveryway andmaynowtakeacreditableplace inanymusicalcompetition.Several specimensofAmericanrecentcompositionsweregiven,butalthough playedevidentlywithtasteandprecision,theydidnotseemtobeof muchmusicalmerit.Bytheway,it istrulysurprisinghowlittleknown inAustraliaarethenumerousand artisticcompositionsofmodernAmericaamusicians.TheromanticConverse,thescientificHadley,therefinedMcDowell(theKeatsofmusicand ablestexponentoftheprogramme inmusic),are oserswhotake theveryhighestrankamongstmodernmusiciansanduniversallyacknowledgedasworthysuccessorsof thegreatmasters.Oneseldomor neverseestheirnameshereonaprogramme,orgetsachanceoflisteningtomusicthatinterpretsmodern feelingsandideas.Nosongswere sopopularinthedaysofourchildhoodastheAmerican-theso-called NiggerMelodies-patrioticsongschoruses,cantatas,arenotevenyet forgotten.Butifnotforgotten,they are,alas!muchmisunderstood,and inmostinstancesgreatlyunder-estimated.Indeedthetitlelittlenigger melodiesisnot but isapttogivealtogetherafalse ideaoftheircharacterandorigin. Theonlyconnectionthesebeautiful andpatheticmelodieshadwiththe poorAfricanblackexistedinthe sensitiveandromanticmindoftheir composer,whomadethe.sadlotof theniggerthesubjectofhissong. Mostofthesemelodies,wordsand music,werethecompositionofthat mostwonderfulandlittleunderstood genius-StephenCollinsFoster.

Theworldhasproducedfewlike StephenFoster,andnonehaveproducedworksimilartohis.Bornin PittsburgsomeSoyearsago,'hebecameagraduateofJeffersonCollege. Atanearlyagehewasdistinguishedasamusician,alinguistanda Painter.Hewasacomposerand songwriterattwelveyearsofage. Hissongsnumbernearlytwohundred,andhave'beensungthewide worldover,frequentlybyIthegreatestsingers,suchas'PattiandNilsson.Thesesongsaresimplemelodiesofsentimentandofathoroughlydomesticcharacter.Nothinglike themhadappearedbefore,andnothinglikethemhasappearedsince. Unscientificandmodesttheyare, andtheyappealdirectlytothe heart.Letthemnotbeforgottenor ignorantlydespised.

At9o'clockonSundaylast,Dean SmythexposedtheMostBlessed Sacramentforsolemnadoration. Throughoutthe'day,notwithstanklSigtheinclemencyoftheweather, theChurchwascrowdedwithdevout worshippers.Theperpetualwatch beforetheBlessedSacramentwas keptbytheSistersoftheConventof MercyandtheChildrenofMary.

FairKelmscott,beautifullysituatedasitis,about16milesfrom Perth,ontheS.W.railway,atthe footoftheDarlingRanges,wastaxedon'lastMondayweekwithpicnickersfromthemetropolis,who werenodoubtpleasedtobreathethe -purecountryaironthisholidayafterarduousworkinthedustycity. OnWednesdaynightthelocal ,ranchoftheMiners'Uniontendered theguestsasmokesocial,whichwas amagnificentsuccess.Theusual toastswereproposedandhonoured, andagoodprogrammeofvocaland instrumentalmusicwasgonethrough. Althoughthedelegateshadsome arduousworktogetthrough,and manylongdiscussionsduringthe progressof'theConference,still theirworkwasneithersostrenuous northeirhourssolong,astoexcuse themfromattendingchurchonSunday.Weunderstandtherewerea numberofCatholicsamongstthedelegates,andalthoughtheywereinformedofthetimeatwhichMass wascelebrated,notoneofthemput inanappearance,muchtothedisedificationoftheCatholiccommunity.
