InhisaddressattheannualmeetingoftheAustralianHolyCatholic GuildinSydney.ArchbishopKelly said-TheFederationofCatholic societieswasspokenof.Federation wouldmeanthatoncertainoccasionstheyWouldsenddelegatesto discussmattersandtovoteinthe nameofthemembersofthedifferentbranches.Thediscussionswould bereportedthroughoutthe branches,andthuspublicopinion wouldbeaffectedandbroughttoa certainunity.IfasyettheCatholic societiesflewtheflagoffederation somepeoplewouldnotunderstand them,andotherswouldbeprepared tomakethepublicmisunderstand them,sothattheywouldnotbe doingmuchgood.Theywere,however,federatedasmembersofCatholicunionsinoppositiontowhateverwascontrarytothegreatprinciplesofsociety.Theywouldbe opposedtowhatwascalledSocialism.Theywereagainstthisand theoppositeextreme.Theystood inthemiddle-theystoodforevery kindofsocialreform,forright hoursofwork,forrightconditions ofwork,forproperprotectionfor thechildrenandthewomen,and societywouldneversupplantasa standardofsocialreformtheencyclicalletterofPopeLeoXIII. Theywouldstand,too,forfairplay inregardtotheirschools,inregard toreligiousliberty.andinregardto civicequality.Onthesepointsthey werefederatedthoroughly-they mightbeblindfolded,butthey wouldnotgoastrayinthesematters,andhewassuretheyalldid whatwasright,andtooktheright coursewhenthesequestionscame tothefront.Onethingthatwasrequiredmorethanfederation-and thelateCardinalalwaysinsistedon thispoint-wasenlightenment.It wasnotenoughtohaveastrong feelingcomingfromeventhebest
