DECREESOFROMANCONGREGATIONS.
Thisrigidadherencetotheprinciplesoftheearlyteachingof the ChurchmaybeseeninthelaterdecreesoftheRomanCenAregation. TheVicar-ApostolicofVizagapatam, intheyear1884,proposedthefollowingdifficultytotheSacredCongregationofPropaganda Thebodiesoftwoneophyteshadbeencremated,theParentstestifyingthatthere hadbeennoidolatrousceremonies. THEARGUMENTSFORAND AGAINST.
Theargumentsinfa'ourofcremationmaybereducedtoafewheads: (t)itwillpreventthecerruptionof thesoil(2)chenqngwaterwillbe safeguardedagainstcontame-aticn; c:rruultinoftheairwillbeavoidedinlocalitiesborderingoncemeteries,withacensequertlessening ofthedangerofinfectionintimesof epidemic.1nans.verithasbeerurgedthatcemeterieserenotacause eftheinfectionoftheair.Inany well-orderedcemeter.,putrefaction taeesPlacesixorsevenfeatbelow thesurface.Intheopenair,with abundanceofoxygen,crrupticnproceedsmore,quickle,withcontiencies dischargeofnoxioisgasesinlarge euantitioshighlydeletriot'stohealth beltitisnotsointhegrave.Mantegazza,aceletratedbectrriologist, hasshownthat,whenthereishuta emailsupplyofoxygen,olieswill

Evenwerenoxiousgasestoescapeinanyquantity,the would beabsorbedontheirupwards,so thataverysmallpartwouldever reachthesurface,orwerethesoil notlitforabsorption(aswassaid tobeinthecaseatPere-Iachaise, Paris)theProcesswouldhetakenup bethevegetablematteronthesurface.Itisheld,also,thatitisno moretruetosaythatcemeteriesare amenacetowaterwells.Charnock, Delacroix,andDaltonhaveProved thatofthreeparts(ofrainwateronlyonepenetratesthesoil,theother twoeitherenaPcratingorflowingintorivers.Now,corpsesincemeteriesarenotsoPlacedastoform continuousstrata,butamoderate distanceintervenesbetweenanytwo LOdiesorrowsofbodies.Ofthe thirdPartofrain,then,whichpenetratesthesoilofagraveyard,a. verylittlewilltouchtheenditsat all,andwhatdoes:willnotallreach. thewaterstreamsbutwillbeabsorbedhytheearth,sothattheremainingdropsthatwouldultimately trickleintothesteamwouldhavealbsolutelynoeffect,werethestream largeorsmall.
