DECREESOFROMANCONGREGATIONS.

Thisrigidadherencetotheprinciplesoftheearlyteachingof the ChurchmaybeseeninthelaterdecreesoftheRomanCenAregation. TheVicar-ApostolicofVizagapatam, intheyear1884,proposedthefollowingdifficultytotheSacredCongregationofPropaganda Thebodiesoftwoneophyteshadbeencremated,theParentstestifyingthatthere hadbeennoidolatrousceremonies. Shouldthem4ssionersinsuchcases protestagainstwhatisconsidereda privilegeofcaste,onmaythefollowingpresentpracticebetolerated? -IfapaganseekshaPtismatthe hourofdeath,themissionergrants itwithoutquestioningwhatmodeof sePultuneistolagiventhebody afterdeath,persuadedthatthePagnnParentswillmakenoaccountof hisdesiretobeburied,n)tcremated. Theanswerwas:-"You mustnotanuroveofcremation.but remainpassiveinthematter,and conferbaptismhecarefulalsoto instr,ctyourpeoplelice,rdirgto thePrincipleswhichyousetforth." ThiswasgivenonSeptember'2, 1884.

CREMATIONINEUROPE. ThereportoftheFrenchCremation Societyfor1903hasthefollowing:"ThereexistsinEuropeninety*erematoriee andthenumberofincineration.%isaeove 25,000."In FrancetherearethreeCrematories. IntheUnitedStatestwenty-nine,in GreatBritain,teeneinItalythirty;inGerman;nine;inSwitzerlandfourinSwedentwoinDenmare,Canada,theArgentineRepublicandAustraliaoneeach."Letus notnumberheretheappliances 'l'okio,letusnotseeanofthepyres raisedinthelilies,inChina,in Siam,inCambogia,atallpointsof theAsiaticContinent,fromtimeimmemorial,Asiahasburnedherdead." THEARGUMENTSFORAND AGAINST.

Theargumentsinfa'ourofcremationmaybereducedtoafewheads: (t)itwillpreventthecerruptionof thesoil(2)chenqngwaterwillbe safeguardedagainstcontame-aticn; c:rruultinoftheairwillbeavoidedinlocalitiesborderingoncemeteries,withacensequertlessening ofthedangerofinfectionintimesof epidemic.1nans.verithasbeerurgedthatcemeterieserenotacause eftheinfectionoftheair.Inany well-orderedcemeter.,putrefaction taeesPlacesixorsevenfeatbelow thesurface.Intheopenair,with abundanceofoxygen,crrupticnproceedsmore,quickle,withcontiencies dischargeofnoxioisgasesinlarge euantitioshighlydeletriot'stohealth beltitisnotsointhegrave.Mantegazza,aceletratedbectrriologist, hasshownthat,whenthereishuta emailsupplyofoxygen,olieswill

deconinesewithouttheemanationof an.odourwhatever.Often,too, thehumanbodnissoreducedbeforedeaththatintheearthitsufferslittleornocorruptionatall, butisfirstmunittitied,andthenslowlyreducedtodust.Again,earth pressurePreventschemicaldecompositiontoagreatextent,producing inthe-Placeofgasaliquid,which entersintovariouscomItinationswith thematerials1nthesoil,withoutthe slightestdangertotheliving.Earth isaPowerfulagentofdisinfection. Evenwerenoxiousgasestoescapeinanyquantity,the would beabsorbedontheirupwards,so thataverysmallpartwouldever reachthesurface,orwerethesoil notlitforabsorption(aswassaid tobeinthecaseatPere-Iachaise, Paris)theProcesswouldhetakenup bethevegetablematteronthesurface.Itisheld,also,thatitisno moretruetosaythatcemeteriesare amenacetowaterwells.Charnock, Delacroix,andDaltonhaveProved thatofthreeparts(ofrainwateronlyonepenetratesthesoil,theother twoeitherenaPcratingorflowingintorivers.Now,corpsesincemeteriesarenotsoPlacedastoform continuousstrata,butamoderate distanceintervenesbetweenanytwo LOdiesorrowsofbodies.Ofthe thirdPartofrain,then,whichpenetratesthesoilofagraveyard,a. verylittlewilltouchtheenditsat all,andwhatdoes:willnotallreach. thewaterstreamsbutwillbeabsorbedhytheearth,sothattheremainingdropsthatwouldultimately trickleintothesteamwouldhavealbsolutelynoeffect,werethestream largeorsmall.
