CardinalBourneisthetwenteninthontheillustriousrollofEnglishCardinals.Ifonegoesbackto thedateofthecreationof England'sfirstCardinal.itbringsone tothenear1143,aboutwhichtime RobertPullenwasraisedtothe CardinalatebyPopeCelestineII. Heonlysurvivedfoureears,ashe diedin1147.Thenextonewas destinedto.betheonlyEnglishPope whowaseverelectedtothatposition,thehighestpositionintheCatholicChurch,andhisname was NicholasBreassPear.Hebelonged toHefts,havingbeenborninAbbot'sLangley,ofhumbleparentage. Nothingmuchisrecordedofhim untilhewenttoFrance,wherehe aPpeerstohavegonetocompletehis education;heafterwardsenteredthe orderofCanonsRegularofSt. AugustineattheAbbeyofSt.Rufus,nearAvignon.Ashiscapabilitieswouldseemtohavebeenofno meanord!r,hebecameAbbot of st.Ruins,andeventuallywas hrouchthethePopetothePapal Connt.HewascreatedaCardinal inLin,andonthedeathofPope AnestasiusIV.intteot('ardinal Breakspearwasunanimouslyelected tothePontificate THEFIRSTENGLISHMANPOPE.

HeoccupiedtheChairofSt.PeterasAdrianIV.,andwasenthronedonChristmas 1134. ItisnecessarynowtoPassovera longintervaluntilwecometothe PeriodwhenCardinalWolsee was ArchbishopofYork.AsiswellknownhewasoneofthemostfamousmeninthehistoryofEngland, althoughhewasbutthesonofan Ipswichtradesman,butabrilliant sonhemusthavebeen,orhewould nothaverisentothehighposition whichheeventuallyoccupied.He succeededCasdinalBainbridgeas ArchbishopofYork,andlike his predecessor,wasraisedtothe('ar(Ululate.HewasBursarofMagdalenCollege,Oxford,wherehewas responsiblefortheerectionofthe tower.CourtchaplaintoHenry VII,endalsotoHenryVIII,.hewas appointedDeanofLincolnin15o8, CanonofWindsor,and,lastly,ArchbishopofYort.Intheyear1314, hewascreatedBishopofLincoln, andlaterinthesameyearwas madeArchbishopofYerl,andPrimeteofEngland.Thenextsearhe wasraisedtotheCardinalateas Crrdinallriest.

CardinalWisemanwasthefirst Cardinalofmoderntimestoheraisedtothatdignitywhilstholding thePositionofanEnglishterritorialArchbishopandMetropolitan; fact,hewasthefirstEnglishmanto holdthedualpositionsincethetime ofReginaldPole.Thestories of thesemoderndignitariesislaid) familiartomostCatholics,and thereforeneednotbedweltenat au.greatlength.CardinalWiseman WasofIrishparentage,thoughhe wasborninSpain.Hisearl).youth wasspentinRome,andwhenhebecameaPriesthebecamefirstrectoroftheEnglishCollege,wherehe remaineduntil1840.Atthattime hewasappointedVicar-Apostolicof theLondondistrictandcameto England.HewasmainlyresponsiblefortherevivalofCatholicity, whichthentookplace,andheitwas whoobtainedthere-creationofthe Catholichiererche HewasappointederstArchbishopofWestminsterinlineo,andsomeshort timelaterwasraisedtotheCardinslate.Nodoubt,manystillremembertheanti-Catholicoutburstwhich followedonthepublicationofhis letter,"FromtheFlamintenGate." InowcometoCardinalManning, "thePoorman'sfriend."Asevertoneknows,hewasnotalwaysa Catholic,havingbeenaRectorof LavingtonandArchdeaconofChichester,besidesarecognisedleaderof theTractarianrevival.Althoughhe hadbeenmarried,behadbeen a widowerforsometimewhenhejoinedtheCatholicChurch.Afterhis ordinationhereturnedtoEngland, andjoinedtheoblatesofSt.CharlesBerromeoatBatswater. When theseeofWestminsterbecamevac3ntPere sIX,appointedDr. elanninetobeArchbishopofWestminsterdespitethefactthathis namewasnotincludedinthelist snlamittedforhisfinaldecision.In thisselectieohewasguidedbyDivineinspiration.Dr.Manningwas consecratedatSt.MaryMocrfields, onJune8,1865,andtenyearslaterhewascreatedCardinalpriest. WhenPooePiusIXdiedCardinal Manningwasoneoftheseproposed ashissuccessor,butonhisrepresentationoftheinadvisabilityofapPointin;anon-ItalianPone!noXIII wasselectedbytheCardinals.

WhenPopePaulIII,diedPolewas electedPole,butowingtohispersonalscrupleshedidnotacceptthe Position,andafterthelongestConclaveenrecordwesconcluded,Pope JuliusIII.waselectedSovereign Pontiffinstead. .111 thistime heremainedoutofEngland,hut whenQueenMarycametothethrone theCardinalreturnedtohisnative lend,roingth-reesPaoalLegate. TheimmediatepredecessorofCFI.dinalBournewasCardinalVaughan, andhisdeathissorecentasto ma'teitunnecessaretorefreshpeople'smemoryonthesubjectofhis life-wcreinLondon.Hewasthe eldestsonofLieut.-Col.Vaughan, andheadofanancientEnglishfamily,butheIreferredthelifeofa priesttothepossessionofalarge rent-rollendtheproudposition whichwouldeventnallebehis.He voluntarilyfetteeuptohisbrother h'srightofsuccessionandjoined thePriesthood,becomingamember oftheorderofOblatesof St. CharlesatBayswater.Hisgreat objectinlifewastofoundaMissionaryCollege,andthishewas enabledtodoafteralongtime, atMillHill,whereheopenedSt. Joseph'sMissie.naryCollege,which isnowalargeandprosoerousinstitution,althoughwhenCardinal Vaughanopenedithehadonlyone student.In1872hewasappointed BishopofSalfcrd;helabouredfor twent,yearsinthediocese,until IllstranslationtoWestminsteron 1892onthedeathofCardinalManning.HewasmadeCardinalthe followingyear.AtWestminsterhis greetwoe(wrsthecommencement oftheerectionoftheCathedral,and healsobuiltthenewArchbishop's houseandtheadjoiningChapter Hall.Asanorganiserandanapostlehewasremarkable,whilethe charmofhispersonalityandhis greatkindnessofheartgainedfor himthatplacewhichhewillalwaen haveintheaffectionsoftheCatholicsofEngland.

ThedrowningoftheRev.James KellyinGlenniesCreek,onSunday morning,whileonhiswayouttothe settlementofGlenniesCreektocelebrateMass,sagatheSydney"Freeman"of1.1ehy.,IS,isoneofthe saddestincidentsinthehistoryof thedioceseofMaitland.Oneof threebrothers,Jheeph,John,and JamesKelly,consecratedtotheserviceofGodinthepriesthood, he hadalreadywonhiewayintothe heartsofthepeople.Hewasborn atNewcastle,receivedhis'rimer educationatHamilton,andstudied forthePriesthieedatManly. He wasordainedinDecember,191o,remainedforashorttimein West Maitland,andwasthenremovedto Turee,wherehewasstationeduntil theendoflastyear,whenhewas transferredtoSingleton.Vatlittle isknownofthefatalityitself.He droveouttoGlenniesCoveonSundaymorningandpassedthroughthe railwaygatesashortdistancefrom thecreekcrossingat8.4:a,nt,The creekwasswollenfromtherecent rains,andasettlersentaboy.to warnthepriest.Hewastoolate. OnthedeathofthelateMr.Butcher,M.le,theTory"Globe,"oneof thebitter2stopponentsofHome Rule,lamentedhisdemiseon the groundthathewasenIrishmanand aUnionistwhoseconductandbearingwereinmarkedcontrasttowhat ittermedthe"dour"representativesofUnionismfromtheNorthof Ireland. Thefirsteffectofthe"resolve" of"Ulster"wastochangeallhesitatingordoubtingLiberalsintoenthusiasticHomeRulers.Reports fromallpartsofthecouttiomake thisclear.Thenexteffectof the "resolve"wastoturnthe"great whirlwindcampaignofToleismin Lancashire,forwhichprepecations hadbeengoingonformonths,into asolemnfarce,ofwhichnotthe leastfarcicalincidentwasCarsen's weepingturnatLiverpoolonJanuary22nd.Itrecalledhiscolleague, Mr.J.H.Campbell's,meltingmood, onanotheroccasion,whichwaswittiledescribedas"thegreatestmiraclesinceMosesstruckthereek." Lancashiremenarelevel-headed. Thebye-electionintheCarmarthen Burghshasbeenverysatisfactory fromtheHomeRulepointofview. TheconstiteencywentUnionistin 1893. AttheelectionJustover, theLiberalandHomeRulecandidate hadtotightanopponentwhohad stronglocalclaims,whopeessome seventhousandpoundsaweekin wages,andwhohadbeernursing theconstituencyfcrmonths.There wasaliviaLabourcandidateinthe
