Thefreeschoolsaretohesubjected toGovernmentinterference,and thosewhopersuadechildrentoleave theStateschoolsortorejectany ofthehooksusedinthemareto heProsecuted.Thismoveisdictated,nodoubt,bythefearthatthe freeschools,ifobstaclesarenotplacedintheirway,will,inthecourse oftime,containmorechildrenthan theStateschools.Atpresentthe pupilsinthestateschoolsare muchmorenumerous,but'despitethe Government'seffortsthefreeschools arerapidlygainingground.Within thecourseofayearthenumberof publicschoolshasircreasedbulooi perthousand,andthenumber of freeschoolsbysPerthousand.In thesamespaceoftimetheattendanceinthepublicschoolshasincreasedby17.26Perthousandand inthefreeschoolsby28perthousand.Insomepartsofthecountry thepublicschoolsarewell-nighdeserted.Frenchparentsarebeginning tosee,especiallysincetheteaching inthem'hasbecomeopenlyanti-religiousanditsfruitismanifestin thegrowthofcriminalit2thatthe, areagravedangertomorality.

Itmusthavebeenratheradisappointmenttothegenialcorrectorat PastoralswhenhereceivedacornmunicntionfromtheBishop,declaringthathehadmerelyaskedpermissiontocirculatethePastoralin orderthatitmightnotbeseizedor hisclergyprosecutedforreadingor receivingit,andthatheabsolutely refusedtoacknowledgethesupremacy ofthecivilpower,themoresothat therequesttotheMinisterhadfollowedameetingc%ftheclergy at whichtheyhadoneandallrepudiatedtheLawofSeparationasopposedtotherightsoftheChurch.

Inallthingstheyarethedeputiesof thePriest,andtheydonothing whichhedoesnotapproveof,and asfaraspossibledirectbeforehand, andifIn-disapprovesofanything, theyobeyhimimplicitly,inlarge mattersandsmall.(Intheolio!. LikeallotherConferences,theRuralConferencewouldhaveitsofficers chiefofall,thePresident,onwhom humanlyspeaking,itssuccessdepends. Underthiscaptiousheadingthe "Kalgoorlienun"publishedtwo weeksa,goacalumniousarticleagainsttheSistersofMercy,Coolgardie,andtheteachingsandpractices oftheCatholicChurchingeneral, whichfarvenom,meanness,andhypocrisy,couldscarcelybesurpassed. Havingabsolutelynothingto:goupon,buttheincoherentstatementof anexcitedandhystericalwoman, thisPaperwhichboastsoftreating allsectionsOfthecommunitywith justiceandimpartiality,venomously accusedtheSistersofCoolgardieof usingunderhandmethodstoinduce anaccomplishedyoungladytobecomeanunofcruellytearing a daughterfromhermotheroffraudalentlyinterceptinglettersbetween motheranddaughter,andofdeliberatelypreventingthedaughterfrom consultingoraskingtheconsentof herownmother.Itdrewavivid Pictureofthispoorgirl,inducedintotheconventbycajoleryandrestrainedtherebycoercion,andthen oholyhorroritappealedtopublic opiniontoriseinarmsandrescue thishelplessvictimfromthe"grip oftheChurch." Blindedbigotry wasalmostexhaustedatthiseffort, butithadoneshriekleft,andthis washurledagainsttheChurchinanothercalumny.TheChurch,itsaid, teachesthatalieissometimesjustifiable,andthatdeliberatedeception andactualfraudmaybeaccounted fairmeanstoanend.

Dr.Ellis,anhonestfair-minded Protestant,andperharsthebestknownandmostrespectedmedical manonthegoldfields,corroborated herevidenceasfarasherdesireto becomeanunwasconcerned.Writingtothe"Sun"hestatedthat twoyearsagothisyoungladycame tohimforexaminationwiththe intentionofenteringtheConvent, thatherefusedtopassher,couldeningherconstitutionunequaltothe severestraindemandedbytheSisters'Rules,thathethenadvisedher togoawayforachangeofairfor acoupleofyears,thatshedidso andpresentedherselfagainforexaminationsomeweeksago.Having Passedhisexaminationsheexpressed herpleasure,remarkingthatotherwisetheSisterswouldnotreceive her.

Thesearegravecharges,calculated tostirupreligiousstrifeinkaPeacefulcommunity.Theyaregoadingto Catholics,insultingandinjuriousto adefencelesscommunityofnuns,and irroundlesscalumniesagainsttheCatholicchurch.Andyet,forthesake ofsensational."copy,"theywere publishedwithouttheleastinquiry astotheirtruthorotherwise.Had anindignationmeetingofGoldfields Catholicsbeenheldlastweekthecowardwhodefamedthenunsshould havefarednobetterattheirhands thantheinfamousex-PriestSlattery, andthe"Sun"officemighthave sharedthesamefateastheoldMechanic'sInstitute.

Butwisercounselsprevailed. Thankstoourcivilconstitution,a lawfulmeansofredressagainstsuch calumniesisatourdisposial.Afirm ofsolicitorswasauthorisedtotake immediatestepstohavethecharacteroftheSisterhoodvindicated.A lawyer'sletterbroughttheoffending publisherstotheirsenses,theysaw theirmistake,theywouldgladlyvisittheConventandpublishthe othersideofthecaseintheirnext issue.Fullfreedomwasgranted themtoinquireintoeverydetailof thecase.Thisresultedinthepublicationofacategoricaldenialof everyaccusationmadeagainstthe SistersandtheChurch. Theyoungladywhowassupposed tohekidnapped,hypnotised,andretainedintheConventagainsther will,metthe"Sun"representative, inthepresenceofMr.Monaghan, MayerofCoolgardie. Shestated, andwaspreparedtoswear,ifnecessary,thatforsixyearsithasbeen hergreatestambitiontodevoteher lifeandhertalentstotheserviceof AlmightyGod;thatbeforeleaving home,sheonherkneesbeggedher mothertoallowhertojointheSistersofMercy;thatwhileapupil teacherinNorsemanConventshe postedherownlettersandthatno lettertoherwaseverinterfered with;thatsheagainwroteand'wiredfarhermother'sconsent that shehadevidenceofhermotherhay-

Whenthuspublishing,afteravigorousProtestfromafirmofsolicitorsagainsttheoriginalarticle, theystillmaintainedthatthat article was published from motivesofjusticeandfair-play,and withoutanimositytowardstheCatholicChurch.Butiftheywereactuatedbythosemotivestheycould easilyhavefoundoutthetruthby ringingalpthePresbyteryorConvent.Theydidnotdoso,andthey therebystandcondemned.They. woundortheirsecondarticlebya hypocriticalexpressionofregretif thewoman'sstatementscausedpain toanysectionofthecommunity. ThefeelingsoftheCatholiccommunitywerepainfullyshockedon Sunday,Jan.21st,byanunscrupulous,bigotted,andanti-Catholic articlewhichappearedinthe"KalgoorlieSun."Gravechargesandbase insinuationswerelevelledagainstthe SistersofMercy,Coolgardie,andthe practicesandmethodsoftheCatholicChurch.Iewasallegedthata younglady,EileenDenny,wasinduced-againstthewisherofhermother,withouttheknowledgeofher mother,withoutevenbeingallowed tocommunicateherintentiontoher mother-tojointheSisterhoodat Coolgardie.

TheSisterswerechargedwithfraudulentlyinterceptingthelettersad Eileen.Denny,whenatNorseman,to henmother.Inthearticleitwas alsostatedthatleanRobinsonaverredthattherewasjustificationfor aliesometimes.Andharpingonthis supposedutteranceoftheDeanthe payerfurtherstatedthat"Ifitisan axiomoftheCatholicChurchthat insomecasesalieisjustified,we presumethatdeliberatedeception, andactualfraudmawhelikewiseaccountedfairmeanstoanend."

Havingstatedthosecharges,the publicareaskedinlanguageofvirtuo::sindignationtoexpresstheir abh,rrenceanddisgustofsuchconduct.Indeed,aneffortwasmadeto fantheflamesofreligiousbigotry, andcastpublicodiumontheSisters andDeanRobinson.

FiredwithhonestindignationagainstsobaseanacttheCatholic communityweredetermined,Dean Robinsonwasdetermined,thatthe meansofredress,providedbyour civilConstitutionshouldbeavailed ofwithoutdelay.

OnSundaylast,however,another articleappearedinthe"Sun"statingthatafterinterviewingMissDennv-everyfacilitywasailordedfor doingso-"wearenowconvincedno undueinfluencewasusedtogetMiss DennytojointheSisterhood.We regretifMrs.Lamb'sstoryhas"causedPaintotheSistersortheadherentsofthychurch.Suchwas neverourintention."

Sothe"sun'wasduped,deceived,ledintoatrap.Itfindsout now,andhashumblytoadmit aftermakingproperinquiriesthat thesensationalchargesareallfalse, unjustanduntrue.

Whateveryhonestmanwouldlike toknowiswhydidthe"Sunbeforemakingthosegraveandbase changes,whichitmusthaveknown wouldcausegreatpainandannoyanceandinjuretothoseconcerned, notinquirewhetherthey.weretrue orfalse.Itcouldveryeasilyhave beendonenothingwassimpler.The ConventandPresbsterycouldhave beencommunicatedwithandthemattersetrightatonce.Isitnotfair playthattheothersidebeheard?

Norwasthemusicalportionofthe Programmeforgotten.FatherCrowley,andhisPipersmusteredinfull force,andrenderedthosegrandold Irishtunesthatwealwayswelcome, alwaysenjoyable,andwillbe populartotheend..Thepiano, too,wasnotidle,andmanybeautifulsongsweresungandthoroughly enjoved.Indeed,weunderstandthat somenewsingerswerediscovered thatnightandinfuturewillbea considerablehelptotheCathedral Choir..

ShewillnotputasunderwhatGod hathjoinedtogethershewillnot consenttoseparatesocietyfromGod orwell-beinginthisworldfromits eternalendsincesheholdsthatno schemeofreform,nolegislation,no philanthropy,howeversincere,that doesnotlooktoGodandtakeeternity,andthesoul,andDivinejustice,intoaccount,canpcsshey'meethumaniteeItwasforthisunion ofGodandlabour,ofhealth n holiness,ofearthandheaven,that theancientGuildstoodsoeloquently.

Nowitisconceivablethatincertaingreatindustaialtowns-LiverPoolorPreston,f';rexample-arestorationoftheGuildsestemmight beeffected,evenintheimmediate future. InsuchplacesCatholic workersaresufficientlystrong, if theywouldbutuniteforsuchapurpose,toformaunionofthiskind onwhatiscalleda"sectarian"basisanditisdifficulttoimagine anythingmoreinspiringtotheworkerthansuchasystemwouldhe.Neitherisitimpossibletoconceiveof anyparishpriestwhowouldnot cordiallywelcomeandencouragesuch anattempt.Atfirst,itisprobable,suchGuildswouldhavetobe general,ratherthanparticularpersonsengagedinan.,oneofadozen tradeswouldhavetobeadmitted itcouldnotheuntilfulltrialhad beenmade,thatditierentiatiincould takePlace.TherulesoftheGuild wouldfollow,nodoubt,thelines foundsuccessfulbyTradesUnions, withanadditionefcertainregulationsasregardsresponsibilitiestowardsreligion.Anditishardto imagineanynitrepowerfulweapon, withwhichtomeettheseculrnsm whichis,amongProtestants,almost takenforgrantedamongworkingmen,thinsuchorganisationswould be. Inallbutaver\fewcentres,however,suchschemesareatpresent simplyinepessibleendtheindividualcatholicworking-manmust,lergeloefighthisbattles,sinceoftenhe

cannotfightthemalone,bythehelp ofnonsectarianunionsanditis, therefore,extraterdinarileimportant thatthe SPLENDIDLEAD givenrecentlyinthematterofaducatiOnshouldbefollowedup,inseasonandoutofseason,byindividual Catholicseverywhere.For,after, all,inspiteofappearances,theCatholichasenormousadvantages,in thathepossessesclearanddefinite principlesforwhichhecanrenderaccount,whiletheirreligion'ofhisfellowsis,inninety-ninecasesoutofa hundred,mereindifferentism and tenmenofreligiousconvictionswill carrymoreweightinaneSociety, thanahundredwhohavenoparticularviewseitherway.

(I)First,then,Iventuretosay, theCatholicworking-manofthefuturewillbedistinguishedby far moreelectivenessinmattersthat touchhisfaith,thanhehasbeen abletoenjoyinthepast.Hitherto hehasbeen,throughforceofcircumstances,andthroughignoranceof hisrealstrength,contentwithlittle morethantoleration.Inthefuture encouragedbetherecentprotestof hisleaders,hewilldemand NoTMERETOLERATION,BUT ACTUALRECOGNITION hewillinsist,andwithperfectjustice,thatsecularismhasevenless todowithself-defenceandlabourorganisation,thanhasdogmaticreligionandinthis,itisdelightful toobserve,hewillhavetheencouragementandstimulusgivenhimby suchferventandrealChristiansas Mr.GeorgeLansbureamongtheAnglicans.

(2)Next,1predictthatinthese alteredcircumstances,theCatholic woremanwilllintitnecessarytoacquainthimselfmoreaccuratelywith thecontentsofthoseconvictions. Hithentohehas,inmostcases,followedwithmagnificentlooalte.the leadofhispriestinsuchmattersas theschoolquestion.andhasnotbeen compelledtobecomeanexperthimself.Infuture,however,hewillno doubt,becalledupon,nowthathis voicehasoncebeenheard,togive anaccountofthoseconvictionsin themselves,toexplainwhyitisthat hemakesthisorthatdemand,and whatcompromisesthereare,ifany, whichhewilltolerate.

NowIhaveselectedtheschool questionasinstance,partlybecause thisisamatterinwhichhe has alreadydistinguishedhimself,and Paine.becauseitisProsasnthe mostimminentproblemthatfaces us.UptothepresenttheNonconformistshavealmostsucceeded,largelythroughafrankconversionof theirmeeting-housesintopolitical debatingrooms,and,inanecase,by thehelpofaPraisewortheperseverance,inestablishingasakindof axiomtheamazingprinciplethatthe onlekindofreligionwhichthei StateoughttosubsidiseistheLeast ,CommonMultipleoftheEvangelical Creeds-inotherwords,N.onconfermity. Itisimpossibletotolerate thisanylonger.Thesuggestionhas ofcourseanaivetewhichisalmost Persuasive.Butitremainsnowfor Catholicworkmenthroughoutthe countretocontinuetoinsistthat thissolutionwillnotsuitthemat allandthat,evenifinthemajorityofStateSchoolsareligionpracticallyindistinguishablefromthatof Dr.'('liffordistobetaughtatthe ratepayers'expense,
