Twoofthemostcommonsignsto beseeninourcitystreetsarethe barber'spoleandthethreegolden ballsofthepawnbroker.Thesehave beeninusesoman,yearsthattheir originalmeaningistomanyquite unknown.Itissaidthatthethree stripes,whichwindsaroundthebarber'sPoleismeanttor-'resenta bandageaboutahumanarm.For inearlydaysthebarberactedas surgeonaswellasacutterofhair. Hewasabletofillthisofficebecauseatthattimeitwascommon beliefthatallillnesswascausedby havingtoomuchbloodinthebody. Consequentlyitwasthoughtthatthe bestthingtodowastobleedthe Rickone.Abarberwascalled,and heundertookthetaskofpuncturing ablood-vesselinthearm;then,afterhethoughtsufficientbloodhad flown,hewouldbandagethewound. Attheannualdistributionofprizes oftheSacredHeartCollege,Auckland,recently,theRightRev.Dr. Clearydealtinsomedetailwiththe educationquestion.Hisremark4 containanaltogetheradmirablevindicationoftheCatholicposition, andaweightyandtimelyexhortationwithregardtothefuture.

Inthecourseofhisreport,the BrotherSuperiorhaslaidhisindexfingerontheaimsoftheCatholic educationimpartedinourprimary andsecondaryschools.ItistosurroundourCatholicyouthwithaCatholicatmosphere,tobuildthemup soundinbody,stronginintellect, andstronginfaith.Herewehave thetrueidealoftheeducationthat educatesitdevelopseveryfaculty, itpreparesyouthforcompleteBrno, -fitsthemforeveryphaseofduty andrightendeavonrinthislife,and leadsthemtotheirtrueplacein thewiderandgreaterlifeintowhich wepassthroughoneorotherofthe thousanddoorsofdeath.

'WeCatholicsbelieve,asmuchas thepoliticiansdu,inhelpingouth tosurmountthedlllicultiesarising fromLdverseenvironment.We believeasmuchastheydo,instoring theintellectsofourpupilswithhumanknowledgeandwisdom,andia pushingtheconquestofnatureto furtherandfullertriumphs.Butwe &nowthatthereareotherendstobe achievedintheschoolbesidesthe sharpeningofwitsandtheextension ofmaterialpower.Weknowthat thehighestvaluesinhumanlifeare moralValues,andthatnoschool trainingcanincreaserealhappiness unlessitmakesfortruthandjustice andmoralrestraint-inawordunlessitmakesforsoundcharacter. Youmaysharpentheintellectwithoutsharpeningthemoralsense;you maytrainthehandwithoutstrengtheningthewillandunlessyou trainachildtobemorallybetter, aswellasmentallybrighter,his intellectualattainmentswillbelittle betterthanDeadSeaapplesinau idlehand. For(inTeranyson's phrase)ayouthormanmaybe "gorgedwithknowledge"andyet bereallyuneducatedformereinstructionisnotethicalitisnotenoughtoformeventheintellect, muchlesstomouldtheheartand willandform.thecharacter,which istherealendofeducation.

'Inthesystemofthecomplete trainingofthefacultiesofthechild, weCatholicspursuetheopposite ,coursetothatlop-sidedandexperimentalsecularsystemwhichapoliticalmajority.hasforceduponthe State-supportedschools.ofNew'Zeeland.Thesecularsystemfirstrose withtheFrenchRevolution,asone phaseofthewaragainstChristianity..Thoughnotthemselvesgenerallyhostiletoreligion,amajority;of ourpoliticiansfollowedthedeceptivelureof"Frenchprinciples"in 1877.WeCatholicsstandfirmwhere wehaveeverstood.Westandtodayforthetrainingoftheheartand willandmoralconscienceofthe 'child,aswestoodupto1877,when ourschoolsformedanintegralpart oftheStatesystem.Wedidnot withdrawourschoolsfromtheState Schoolsystem.Theyweredrivenout ofit,notbecauseofanyverdictof 'educationalexperts,butbyacomofpoliticianswhohadneitherknowledgeof,norskillinnthe principlesandmethodsofeducation. Butthatisnotall.Ourschools weredrivenoutofthepublicschool systemonwhatwas,ineffect,areligioustest-drivenoutofitona question of religious dogma,drivenoutofitbecausewe couldnotthen,aswecannotrow, subscribetothesectarianFrench dogmasonwhichourEducationAct isbased.Theseunderlyingdoctrinesarechieflythetwofollowing first,thatreligionhasnonecessary orusefulpartinschool-training.The secondis,thatapoliticalmajority hasthemoralrighttobanishreligionfromtheplacewhichithasoccupiedfromimmemorialagesirthe school.Teseawaythesedogmas, andyousweepasidethe.wholefoundationonwhichourEducationAct isbuilt.WeCatholicsrepudiate theseStatedoctrines;weknowthem tobeeducationallyunsound,historicallyfalse,andmorallyindefensible.

Forustheschoolis,asitever was,sacredground-sacredlikethe BushofHorebortheTempleofGod -oneoftheante-chambersthrough whichthesoulofthechildpasseson itswaybacktoGod.WeCatholics makesacrificesforthechildren,simpinbecauseweknowwhattruechildtraininginvolves,becauseweknow theperilsandthepossibilitiesof youth,andbecauseweknowthatthe futureiswiththosewhosecurethe childrenofto-day.

SchoolswithoutGodtendto makechildrenwithoutgodliness.You cannotget,eitheroutofaniron bucket,oroutofaneducationsystem,morethanisputintoit.You cannotgatherfigsfromthistles,nor graPesfrombrambles.AnEastern philosophersaidtohisservantLukman: "Gointothefieldandsow wheat."Buthesowedoats.At theharvesttimethemasterangrily cried"DidInottellyoutosow wheatthere? Whythen,didyou sowoats?""Isowedoatsinthe honethatwheatwouldgrowuP." Themastersaid"Whatfoolishidea isthis? Politiciansare-someofthemmenofmuchpromiseandofgreat expectations. Thereareprobably amongthemLukmanswhoexpectto reapthewheatofsoundmorality, whereitstrueseed,itsonlyfirm principlesthoseofreligion!,have neverbeensettheymayexpectto gatherinChristianvirtuewhere theyhavethrownspiritualandreligiousdevelopmentoverthewall, andwheretheyhaveestablished whatis,ireffect,adogmaticform ofStateagnosticism.Butwiser headsknewbetterthanthey.After alongexperienceofthefirstsystem. ofGodlesspublicinstruction, so greatastatesmanasthefirstNapoleonfounditnecessarytore-introdacereligionintotheschoolsof France.Hollandtriedthesecular systemandsickenedofit.Sodid Belgium.TheDukeofWellington deprecatedthepurelysecularsystem as " ASCHEMEOFSOCIALDESTRUCTION." AndWashington, "TheFatherofhisCountry,"left tohispeoplethesacredlegacyof theseweightywords "LETUS WITHCAUTIONINIDULGETHE SUPPOSITION THATMORALITY CANBEMAINTAINEDWITHOUT RELIGION.Whatevermaybeconcededtotheinfluenceofrefinededucationonmindsofpeculiarstructure,reasonandexperiencebothforbidustoexpectthatnationalmoralitycanprevailinexclusionofreeiousprinciple."And(asHumboldtremarked)"whateverwewish toseeintroducedintothelifeofa nationmayfirstbeintroducedinto itsschools.'" TheseChristianprincipleswe seektoinstilintothemindsofour youth-tomouldtherewiththeirin-

Andnow,Iamsureouwillbe Pleasedtohearoftheoriginofthe SocietyinNewZealand,andAustralia.TheSocietywasfirstintroduced intoNewZealandbythelateMr. CharlesO'Neillwhohadformerly beenamember'ofaGlasgowConference.AftertheSociet..waswell establishedinNewZealandandwas doinggoodwork,Mr.O'NeilljourneyedtoSydney,andthere.trueto hischaritableinstincts,heformed anotherConference,andlivedtosee theSocietyextendedtoMelbourne andAdelaide,andtoflourishnetand hishighestexpectations.

Mr.O'Neillwas,ofcourseavery piousman,andadaft,communicantheusedtorepeattheLittle OfficeoftheImmaculateConception, everymorningofhislife.Hehada specialdevotiontotheRosaryof theImmaculateConceptionandhe inducedmanyofhisfriendstodaily recitethoseheads,hehadmany talestotellofhowtherecitationof thosebeadsdaily,hadeffectedthe returnofcarelessCatholicstotheir duties.

Mr.O'Neilldiedaboutioor12 yearsagoinSt.Vincent'sHospital, withtwoofSydney'sholiestpriests athisbedside,namelyFatherKennedy,thethenSuperioroftheFranciscans,andFatherPicquet,ofthe MaristOrder,bothheldintheoder ofsanctitybythf,CatholicsofSAno'.Thedeceasedgentlemanwas buriedinRockwoodcemetery,and themembersoftheSociet;ofSt. VincentdePaulerectedoverthespot abeautifulmarblecross.-Mayhis soulrestinPeace.

OnWednesdayweekthebazaar, whichhasbeenpromotedinaidof theCatholicchurchandConvent, wasopenedattheMasonicHallby theMayor(Mr.B.M.Fuller),Mrs. Fuller,andBishopKellywithFatherO'Hare,werealsoontheplatform.TheMayorinopeningthe function,saiditwasagreatpleasuretodoso,becausetheobjectof thebazaarwastheassistanceofso praiseworthyaninstitutionasthe ConventandChurchandSchools.He wishedeverysuccesstothepromoters,andthiswouldheassuredif thevisitorsopenedtheirhearts-and theirpockets.

Thesubstanceofthemotionwas, "thealterationoftheday,hour,and placeofthemeetings,asheldat presenttotheSaturdaynightprevioustothethirdSundayofeach monthattheMechanic'sInstitute, supper-room,atwhichallCatholics areinvitedtoattendthesocialpart ofthemeetings,whichitistheintentionoftheBranchtoholdimmediatelyafterthebusinessofthe Branchhasbeendisposedof. "Hullo"saidone,namedGordon.1ohnson,sittingupandrubbing hiseyes,"What'sup?"forglancing aroundtheroom,hesawthatit waslightedupwithasteadyglare. ustforamomenthesatthere wonderingwhatcouldbethecause ofthisgreatbrightness.Thenhe jumpedupfromhisroughbed of strawinthecorner,andrantothe window.Heimmediatelysawthe causeoftheglarewhichhadlighted uptheroomsostrangelyforsome littledistanceaway,theflameswere burstingforthfromthewindowsof alargemansion.Turningquicklyto wherehismate,ArthurVanewas sleeping,hecalledloudly"Quick, ArthurI Dr.Saunder'shouseison lire,andlittleNevillesleepsright atthetoP! BythistimeArthur wasawake,andsittingupwitha bewilderedlookonhisface.

Inlesstimethanittakestotell, thetwoboyswereinthestreet,runningquicklyinthedirectionofthe burningbuilding.Onarrivingon thesceneoftheconflagration,they foundthatthebrigadehadnotyet arrived.

Dr.Saunders,hiswife,andlittle daughter,almostmadwithexcitementhadjustrushedintothestreet andweresurroundedbyagroupof excitedonlookers,whichafirealwaysattracts.

Willinghandsweretryingtosubduetheflames,butMrs.Saunders knewthatherbeautifulhomewas gonebeyondrecall.Suddenlya Piercingcryrenttheair"Neville, myboymyboy.heisstillinside." Andthefranticmothertriedtorush. towardstheburningbuilding,but stronghandsheldherback."What wastheuse,"theysaid,"ofrisking twolivesforthesakeofone."

GordonwhowasstandingclosebesideDr.Saunders,heardtheawful cry.Quicklythroughhismindflashedthethoughtofthe`doctor'spast kindnesstohimselfandArthur,when afewmonthsbeforetheyhadbeen strickenwithScarletFiver.

Thedoctorhadheardoftheirsad case,andtakingPity.onthem,had attendedthemuntiringlyallthrough thesickness,andwhentheywereconvalescent,hehadbroughthislittle sonNevilletovisitthem. Since then,thelittleboyhadbeentheir kindestfriend.Snatchingupanold muffler,whichhadfallenfromsomeone'sneckintheexaitereent,Gordontiedittightlyaroundhismouth, andofferingupaprayertoGodto helphimthroughthisawfulventure, hesprangtowardsthedoor,from whichsmereandflames-.acrenavissuing.

Withoutbeingnoticed,hedashedto theburningstaircase,andfoughthis waythroughthePre,tothetop storey.Severaltimeshestumbled, andfoundithardtobreathe,but thinkingofthetinylad,whomhe lo.Yedsowell,hestruggledmanfully on.

Inafewminutes,whichseemed verylongtothebraveboy,hereachedtheroominwhichNevilleslept, andopeningthedoor,hedashedin. Forasecondthesmokedrovehim hack,butsummoningallhisstrength herushedintotheroom,almostfallingovertheprostratebodyofthe littlechild.

Kneelingdownandfeelinghisheart Gordonfoundthathewasstillalive sotakinghiminhisarms,hestaggeredtowardsthewindow.Withone handheraisedthesash,andtearing themufflerfromhismouth,wavedit andshoutedwildly.Instantlyanal-
