Thefirstretreatwasopenedir. 1903atViersen,andwasattended fiftypersons.Itwaswhatiscalled inGermany"aclosedretreat,"and wasconductedinaPrivatechapel. Theretreatsrapidlyincreased.In 1909theywere'attendedby2.879 persons,andin1910byfourthousandthreehundredandlivefromall overGermany,threethousand,six hundredandforty.havingcomefrom theRhenishProvinceandWestphalia alone.Inaparalleldirectionwere developedthe"Rekrutenmission."or missionsgiveninpublicchurchesfor youngsoldiersabouttoleavetheir homestoenteronmilitarylife. Thesemissionsareirostpracticable, inbigtownssuchasCologne,Aixla.Chapelle.Essen,etc.TheRev. FatherKassiPe,O.M.I.,Provincialof theOblatesinGermany,hasPreachedseveralmissionsofthekind,which wereattendedbyasmanyasfive hundredpersons.In1909thetotal numberofyoungmenattendingthe "Rekrutemrissions"wasonlyafew hundredalloverGermane,butin 19Puitwassomethingliketwelve thousand.

VALUEOFTHECRUCIFIXIN COREA.

NowthatJapanhasannexedCoreathereisgreatdangerthatthe oldlinesofdemarcationwillhiesoon wipedout,seesthe"CatholicBulletin."OfcoursetheCoreanshavea deep-rootedhatredofthewilyconqueror,butthelatterisnotbothering muchaboutthatendofit.The transitionwasmadewithoutany bloodshedandnofusspracticallyof anykind.Theonlychangethathes beenmadeasfarasthemissionsacre concernedisthatmanyoftheChristianshavemovedawe:,someof themtowardstheborders.Sixlittle('hristianvillageswereestablishedduringthepasttwoyears,and whilethehumblechapelsarenot muchtolookattheyareservingtho excellentpurposeofkeepingtheChristianstogether. Thereareabout twenty-eighthundredChristians GO thebordersand700seriouscatechumens.Inthewinterthemissions areconnectedbywaterwayswhich arefrozenover,thusgivingaccessto Placesnoteasyofapproachforthe missionary. Thedevotionofthe('hristiansto theirCatholicemblems,the'rcrucifixesandmedalsisveryedifyin-:and hasbeenthemeansofattracting manytoinquireaboutthefaith.PerhapsthishascomefromtheRussians,whoseloveespeciallyforthe MotherofGodiswellknown. FatherPorte,0.M.I.,continuestodo goodworkamongthenatives.He isanadeptandintrepidmissionary, Happilyheisstrongandactive.Recently,leavinghismissionatTaungs hemadeatournorthwardstovisit theCatholicnativesatGanesaand Morokweng.Travellinginawagon drawnby'bullocksthroughsandy countryisveryslow.TheplacesnamedaretwooasesinthegreatKalaharidesert.Someofthenatives hadbeenintheCatholicSchoolat Taungs.FatherPortereceivedseveralcatechumens,baptisedseveral children,andgavetheEasterCommuniontoseveraladults.Hehopes thatintimeamissionwithcatechistsmayheestablishedatthesedistantposts.Outsidetheoasesthere arenativeswhoareasslavesoftheir mastersresidingwithinthem.These slaves,however,arenotsold;they arecalledBalala.Theyareserfs, whotakecareoftheirmasters' beasts.Theydonotillage,butthey liveonr)ots,wildmelons,andany gametheymaymeetwith.Sometimestheirchildrenaretakenfrom theparentsandaregiventofriends.
