Etiquette,ortheconventionalobservancestobefollowedundergiven circumstancesinthesocialworld, consistsofacollectionofrulesthat aremeantnutonlytoguidebutalsotosafeguardmenandwomen, intheirintercoursewithoneanother.Eachrulehasareasonforits existence,andthesemorallawsare simplytheaccumulatedexperienceof aconsiderableperiod,andathorough knowledgeofthemisgreatlyto berecommended.

Thisarticledoesnotbyanymeans pretendtobeafullexposition of "Etiquette,-butdealsonlywith onephaseofthesocialcode,andhas beenwrittenmorewithaviewto helpingyoungmenandwomenwho owingtotheirvariousvocationsare unabletoobtainreadilythevaluable adviceoftheirparents.Onehas frequentlytopayheavilyfor experiencegained,andsometimesatthe priceoflostopportunitiesandruinedcareers,hencetheimportanceof everymanandwomanbeingguided bydefiniterulesofconduct.Those whothroughinexperienceandwantof foresightsneeratallconventionalities,willusuallyheforcedlaterin lifetoacknowledgethattheywere mistaken.

Aquestionthatisfrequentlyto beconsideredis:-Mayyoungladies acceptinvitationsfrom.Dungmen, andallowthemselvestobeescorted abouttoPlacesofamusementsuch asdances,theatres,etc.,taanyof theirmenfriendswhoundertaketo chaperonthem?Ayoungladywho islivingawayfromherparents shouldtryandgetamarriedlady toaccompanyherwhengoingtoentertainmentsatnight,butifsheis engaged,shemay,withouttheleast hesitationallowherfiancetochaperonheraboutandbearexpenses. Shepossessesacertainclaim'on him.

Strictlysneaking,awomanMay notallowamantochaperonherat night,orbearexpensesuntilthereis aformalengagement,butnowadas itisapardonablebreachofthe rulesforawomanto allowamantochaperonherat

nightandoccasionallytobearexpensesiftheirfriendshipispracticallycertaintoleadtoaformalengagement.Butsincetheman is merelyafriend,itwouldthrowa finerspiritonherPartifshesometimesinsistedonbearingherownexpenses.Amanwillrespectawomanallthemoreforherprideand independence.Itismostunscrupulousandmeanofawomantomake aPointofgoingaboutattheexpenseofmenwhomshehasabsolutenointentionofmarryingandthus givethemfalseimpressionsastoher realfeelings,besidessheislikelyto damageherownprospectsbykeepingothersandmoredesirablemen away. Noyoungmanwithany senseofhonourwouldgiveayoung ladyafalseimiressionandhewould forthatreasonavoidgivingpresents orextendingtoheranythingmore thanthemostordinarycourtes,and attention.

Youngmenohoaregenerallyadvisedto"bewareofpaint"should takegoodcaretobewareoftheunscrupulousflirt,suchacharactercannotbeexpectedtohesincereorhonourableinherdealingswithmen.A manwithanyrefinementorself-resPectwhoisseriouslyonthelookout furawifewouldnotcaretowaste histimeandmoneyplayingthepart ofausefulchaperon,ahanger-on, or-inthelanguageofthestreet-a tamecatorwalkingstick.

Ayoungladymayhavemen friendshutsheshouldhescrupulously,carefulnottoallowthemto incuranyexpenseonherbehalf,or givethemfalseimpressions,andit wouldbeverymuchtoheradvantagetoseethatthefriendshipis notmisinterpretedbeonlookers,for shemayunderthosecircumstances handicapherselfbykeepingdesirable suitorsoff. WhentheChristianchildrenleave theirschools,theirisnowledgeofthe loveofChristisshallow,elementary andweak. Theyminglein the world,andaregraduallyimmersed inwhatSt.Augustinecallstherushingfloodofhumancustom.Slowly theirintelligenceshardenreason takesholdofrealitythingsare seenallround;childishfancydies., Workpresses,sordidcaresmultiply, andinnocencedisappears.Thus theirearlyknowledgeoftheirSaviour,peacefullyimbibedintranquil schooldays,isinperilofbeinglost. Newideasoverlayit,seriouswork makesitseemunreal,thehardnessof lifetendstoreduceitweerbyweek tothesubstanceofadreAnthatis Past. Itwillneithergrowasit shouldgrow,norwilliteversurvive atall,unlessitisquiclklyandconstantlyrenewed,supplemented,and Protected.Thisistheworkthe Churchandherservantshavetodo forthemassesofthepeople-from theboyandgirljustsettingtheir footintotheworldtothemature menandwotrenwhocarryonthe world'scourse.Theteachingofthe Catechismtotheyoungisessential andinvaluable.Bateveryonewho knowstheCatholic,andthewasof theworld,knowshowmenandomenastheygrowupinevitablylose theirearlyinformationandtheir firstreligiousimpressions.Thework ofinstruction,therefore,isperpetual intheChurch.Thepriestwhoinheritsthechargeto"teach"imato callhisflockroundthealtar.He hastocontendandcompetewiththe othercallsofthisworld.Hehas gottoimpress,notmindsthatare empty,simple,andreceptive,but mindsonwhichisconstantlypouring' astream,ofknowledgethatissecularatitsbest,andmaybefascinating,alluring,corrupting,anddegrading.Hehastointeresthuman heartsthatareinterestedintheabsorbingwork,pleasure,pair.,andsolicitudeoftheworld.Itwouldbe ahopelesstaskwereitnotthatit ishelpedandPromotedbytheHol% SpiritHimself... INTERIORLIGHT.

Theinstructionofthechildcan hardlybegintoosoon.Iftheteacher-andIwouldsaythemother,or theeldersister-knowhowtofeedthe tendermindasonefeedstheimmaturebody-tofeedandnourishwithoutoPPressing-thentheyoungheart beginstoformthoseimpressions, whichasyearsgoonbecomethe frameworkofthosemagnificent truths,whichGodhasgiventothe worldforitshealinganditssaving. Thehumanbeingismadeupofmany faculties.Thespiritualintelligence aloneisthefacultyofhumanknowledgeinthecompletesense. But otherpowersactasitshandmaids, introducethemessengersfromthe outerworld,holdandpreservethe intellectualconceptionsassilvercups holdapricelessessence.Thegreat ideasthatarebeyondthegraspof thechildoftenlieatfirstintne heartlikeablossomofaflower thattimeandsunwillfullyexpand. Andifthereisalackofthesesimple,holywords,tendertouches,attractivepictures,piousimpressions, truthswrappedup-astoooftenhappenswithsomanyneglectedchildren -thentheinstructionofafter-days, whenthemindhasaltered,islike sowinggrainsuponahardandarid soilthemindmakeslittleofthem andoftenthrowsthemoffasifits sympathieswerepervertedandits

Somemindsobjectandsay`ou cannotteachmysteriestothechild ortothemasses.Allyoucanexpectisthattheywillrepeatyour formulasandliveinsomelowand easyformofsuperstition.

Wesay,onthecontrary,thatthe youngandthesimplecanattaineffectiveknowledgeofallrevealedmysteriesaknowledgethatshallnot bemerewords,butthereflectionof objectivetruth,andamentalgrasp ofilluminatingandstimulatingrelations,suchashumanknowledgeof anykindconsistsof.Moreover,we maintainthatpietyandsimplicity alwaysattainamorerealandspiritualknowledgethaniseverattainedbymindsthatareacuteandcultured,butnotpious.

Inotherwords,webelievethat theHolySpiritofGod,whocreated us,hasgiventoallofus,notonly anexternalrevelation,butalsoan interiorlight.Wehavenotonly Scripture,CreedsandCatechism,hut wehave,ifweareasHewouldwish ustobe,theinspiredgiftoffaith, andthesupernaturalendowmentcalledunderstanding.

Whatdoesthismean?Itmeans thataChristian'smindisdifferent fromotherminds.Inthemindand intelligenceofonewhopossesses sanctifsinggracethereisasubtle penetratinginfluencewhichprepares thewayforthereceptionofthataugustrevelationwhichhangsinthe worldlikethesunintheheavens..., Itishardlynecessarytosaychat oneofthemostremarsahlepoints intheteachingofSt.Paulisthat ChristianshaveasPecialkindof knowledge,andthatthisknowledge isattainedthroughanindwellingpoweroftheHolySpirit.Hecalls thisthe"illuminationoftheeyesof theheart"(Eph.,I,Is).Inconnexionwiththisinterioroperation oftheHolyGhost,hespeaksrepeatedlyofChristiansbeing"filledwith allknowledge"andoftheirpossessingthefullnessofunderstanding andknowledgeofthemysteryofGod theFatherandofChristJesus.The wordusedbytheApostleallthrough hisEpistlestoexpressthis"knowledge,"isgnosis-awordthatwas destinedtohaveintheearlyagesof Christianity alongandeventful history.Itmighthavebeenexpectedthatthisword-sodefinedand consecratedbySt.Paul-wouldhave passedintothetechnicalterminologyoftheCatholicChurch. "charity"whichtheusageof Liketlte NewTestamentmadetheordinary andprevailingwordfortheloveof God,theword'gnosisoughtatthis momenttobeinourcatechismsand sermons.Nay,wecanseeitIncommonuseinthesecondandthirdcenturies-inClementofAlexandriaand St.Irenaeus.Christianknowledge iscalledgnosis,andChristiansare calledGnostics.Butafatalthing hadalreadyhappenedtothatexcellentChristianword.Ithadbeen seizeduponbyhereticsandsemi-pagans,anddedicatedtoafalseand Perniciousteaching.Alreadyinist. Paul'sowntime,therewasinexistencewhatSt.Paul(ITim.vi.2o), hadtocallalyinggnosis-aloing "knowledge"-whichmadeshipwreckoftheFaith.TheGreekintellectandtheOrientalintellectof thatday,comingfacetofacewith thesublimeteachingofChrist,and !burningtoknowwhatGodwas,what goodandevilwere,howcreationwas possible,hadrefusedtobecontent withtheApostolicexpositionof Christianity,andhadgonetotne mythsandfablesoftheancient world,tothedreamsofthephilosophers,andtheirawnwildfantasies, forwhattheycalledknowledge.

TheChildofChristrealisesthatonlyonethingmatters,andthatis GodandGod'sWill.Allthemultiplicityofworldlyendsandpurposesisreducedtothesingleness andsimplicityofGodalone.Sin isrepentedof,anddetested,andthe emotionsofpassion,ofpride,andof evilofeverykindarewatched,repressedandmortified,tillthewhole areaoftheheartissweetandemptyfortheapprehensionofthatreligioustruthwhereinaloneman's destinyiswroughtout.Foraheart cleanfromsin,purefrom,wilfuland profaneemotion,humblylookingup toitsCreatorasitslastendand onlygood-suchaheartcantakein thelovelinessandsolemnityofthe Christianknowledge.Suchaheart isfreefromthecorruption,the(legradation,theblindness,theparalysisofwilfulmoralevil.TheknowledgeofJesusChristappealsto it.TheineffableloveofaGodwho foroursakeshasbecomemanwarms thatsimpleandpureheartwithholy fire.Nosinfulallurementcompetes withthedivinemessage.Nodefilementspoilsitssereneshining.No cloudtosensualblindnessshutsout itspureillumination.Thustheinnocent,thepure,thesingle-minded, thetrulyrepentant,themortified, andthepious-whatevertheirage maybe,ortheirnaturalendowments ortheiropportunities-possess,by theindwellingSpirit,aspecialpowertoknow.

THESTRENGTHENINGOFTHE WILL.

ButiftheGnosticheresiesand theiroff-shootshavedeprivedusof St.Paul'sownwordforTinowledse, stillwehaveSt.Paul'steaching. EveryChristian'sheartissoalumina atedbytheHolySpiritthatheis abletoattaintoaknowledgeof JesusChristdeeperandbroaderthan couldotherwisebeconveyedbyany externalteacher.

Torealisethiswemustunderstand whatitisthatdeepensandbroadenshumanknowledge.Knowledge dependsuponthePowerofintelligenceandtheconcentrationofthe will. Itisjustaswiththesight oftheeye.Iftwoobserversview thesameobject,heseesmostclearlywhohasthebeste'e-sightand whobestconcentrateshisattention. Itisinboththesewaysthatthe graceofGod,andtheendowmentof faith,andthegiftsoftheHolyGhost giveefficiencytotheChristian'spowerofknowingtherevelation of God,FortheHolySpiritgivesthe heart,firstofallsimplicityandpurity. TheChristiangracessilence thedistractionsofworldlyandProfanethings.Forweliveina worldthatdemandsourattentionon

Themoreamanbringsallhisattentiononthatwhichisputbefore him,themorethoroughlyhecomesto knowit.ThereisanancientandaugustcommandmentheardinthedesertwhereGodwas makingHimselfknowntoHispeople,andinJudeaandGalileewhen thelovingaccentsofHissacredhumanitywereslowlybringingtoall menafarmoreintimateknowledge oftheirGod-"Thoushaltlovethe Lordth.)Godwiththywholeheart, thywholemind,andthywhole strength."ForourHeavenlyFatherlooksforalltheconcentrated forceofthehumanbeing.Ourbeingsarecomplexstherearetendenciesofeveryhind,desires,reachings outofmanypowerstothingshigh andthingslow,thingsnearand thingsafar-sense,imagination,passionandintelligenceoverall.When theintellectualwillisdirectedto GodandtoknowledgeofChrist,that suffices,fortheotherpowers,even; whentheyareinrebellion,mustbe dominatedbyreason.Butthepower oftheHolySpiritinthebreastofa Christiantendsto*takeeverypower thatisinthehumanheartuniteand conspireintheeffortoftheintellectualwill;sothataChristiannot onlydirectsacoldassenttothe truthsofGod-notonlycontemplates theknowledgeofChristwithcalm acceptance-butlovesit,graspsit, withhandsoffeeling,clothesitwith colour,givesitsoliddimensions,and useseverypowerandfacultyinmakingithisown.Inthegeneration thathaspassedawaymen'knew whatashipinfullsailwas.They sawanoblevesselspeedingonwith allitscanvasspread,theprospering

Andfromthistwothingsfollowfirstthatneitherchildrennoradults canknowChristunlessthearepiousand,secondly,thatnoCatholicteacher,moreespeciallyapriest, canteachasheshouldteachunless histeachingisfilledandimpregnated withdevotion;unlesshehasthe churchoverhisheadandthealtar behindhim;unlesshealsopreaches thespiritofBethlehem,Nazareth, andCalvary,andthepracticeofthe Sacraments.Fortherearefruits andflowersthatflourishinsunny lands,butdiehereintheNorth andsotheknowledgeoftheloveof Christseeksasoilsoftenedwiththe dewsofgraceandairswarmwiththe outpouringoftheSpirit,thatitma, growuntothedayofChristJew's.

Withthatwhole-heartedeagerness, whichhascharacterisedthisinnocent faithfulpeople,theyawaithim,and doubtlessarewithusinspirithere to-day.Theirhighesthopesand confidencewillberewarded,forhis Irishhearthasalreadygonebefore him'hisIrishintelligencewillle theirstay,andhisIrishfaithand zealwillleadthemtothegreenpasturesoftruthandvirtue., IUsleaving,indeed,willnotbewithouta tingeofhumansorrow,forhethis daybidsgood-byetoalltiesofhome andkindred.Butthehomeofthe manoffaith,aftertheexampleof theApostles,iswheretheLord chooses.AndAchonry,inreturnfor thefaithwhichitreceivedfromone whowashimselfaslaveandanexile whilefollowingDr.O'Dobertswith itsPrayerswisheshimtogoforth andbeafather,ateacher,anda protectortothemillionsoulsthat lookforhiscoming.

ThemembersoftheNewCabinet wereselectedonlastSaturdayafternoon.AstheLabourPartywas returnedwithanoverwhelmingmajority,andasitsmemberscanclaim agoodlyshareofbothhonestyand ability,Peoplenaturallylookedforwardwithgreatinteresttothe selectionoftheNewCabinetMinisters.

Fortunately.,fortheParty, Mr. HughMahon,whodidsuchservice forthecauseasEditorofthe"Vanguard"duringtherecentcampaign waspresentattheCaucusmeeting, andexpeditedmattersconsiderably byhisinstructionsandadvice.

Mr.J.Scadden,whohasledthe PartysincetheresignationofMr. Bath,wasunanimouslyappointed PremierandColonialTreasurer.

Aballotwasthenheldandthose receivingthehighestnumberofvotes wereallottedtheremainingPortfoliosbythePremier.Thiswasa wisemethodofprocedure,becauseit includedademocraticexpressionand anappealtoauthority.

Lookingoverthenamesof the Ministers,itseemstousthatthe servicesofthetrustedmenofthe Partyhavebeen,toagreatextent,recognised.Thisisonlywhat shouldbeexpectedfromaParty ProfessingDemocraticprinciples.

Weknowthatthereareatleast afewyoungmenofmorethanordinaryabilityintheParty,butthey mustprovethemselvesandworkwell asprivatemembersbeforetheycan expecttohavetheirservicesfully recognisedbytheircolleagues.

Wearepleasedtoseethenames ofMessrs.Bath,Johnson,andDrew amongsttheMinisterstheirpast experienceontheTreasuryBenches mustbemostusefultothemselves, andtothepartyatthepresenttime. Thecountryisnowwatchingand waitingexpectationsaregreatand hopesarehigh.Wedoubtifany PoliticalPartyinWesternAustralia everhadtheopportunitiesnowplacedatthedisposaloftheLabour Party.

OnlastTuesdaytheDiocesanSynodwasheldintheCathedralofthe ImmaculateConception.HisLordshiptheBishop,theSecularpriests, andtheOblateFathers,whoarein chargeoftheFremantleParisnes, werepresent.HisLordshipcelebratedMassatfoo'clock,andformally declaredtheSynodopenafterMass. Theprescribedliturgicalobservances werecarriedoutindetail. His Lordship,theBishop,addressedthe priestsonmanyveryimportantsubjects,relatingtotheproper:liechargeoftheirsacreddutiesHe laidbeforethemallinformationnet onlyregardingthefinancAlstateof theDiocese,hutalsoinregardto thedisposalofhisawnprivateaccountacquiredbythePresentation from'ClergyandLaityathisConsecration.Thisthoroughconfidentialspiritisonlyanotherproofof HisLordship'sunabatingzealforthe Faith,andunselfisheffortsforthe ibettermentoftheDiocese,HethankedthePriestsfortheloyaland whole-heartedmannerinwhichthey wereco-operatingwithhiminthe DiocesanDebtCampaignandwith suchheartyco-operationandgenuine supportHisLordshiphaseveryconfidencethatthecrushingdebtwill beremovedandtherealworkofBishopandPriests-thebuildingof churchesandproperequipping of schools-sooncommencedandcarried oninaspiritworthyofourDiocese,ourChurch,andourFaith.

HisLordshipfullyexplainedtne factthatHispredecessor,Dr.Gibney,handedovertohimcertainassets,asanoffsetagainsttheDiocesan.Debt.Buthepointedoutthat alltheseassetscouldnotbeplaced onthemarketatthepresenttime someofthem'hadbeenalreadydisposedofinasatisfactorymanner, andthemoneyrealisedhadconsiderablyreducedthedebt.Forthe successofthesalesHisLordship saidhewishedtorecordthethanks ofhimself.theclergy,endlaity,to Messrs.T.F.Quinlan,J.D.Connolly,andDr.Kenny.,whofreelyand unselfishlygavehimtheirsoundadvice,theirbusinessknowledgeand theirpracticalassistance.

The Vicar-GeneralawaitedasuitableoccasionforthePresentation,andnone CouldbemoresothanlastTuesday, whentheBishopandallthePriests werePresent.HisLordship,ina feelingresponsethankedthePriests fortheirthoughtful,useful,andmagnificentgift,whichhesaid,hewould alwaystreasure,andwhichduringthe mostsacredfunctionstofhisoffice, wouldremindhimofthedevotedaffectionofhisPriests.

ThelongexpectedandwellorganieedCoronationCarnivalw..sopenedb.,HisExcellencytheGo.eruor, SirGeraldStrickland,onlastSaturdayafternoonato'clock.The weatherwasallthatco.,1,1ne sired,theattendancewasremarkably good,andthefunctionwasonethat seemedtoshedhappinessandbrightnessaround.,Thoughthesoundsof thePoliticalconflicthadonlyjust diedawaybothpartieswerewell representedontheplatform"this," asHisLordship,BishopMileremarked,"wasapleasingfeature," andperhapsagoodomen.

TheCoronationCarnivalis,as ourreadersareaware,oneofthe greatleversusedintheverydifficul, workofadjustingthedebtwith whichtheDioceseofPerthisburdened.Undoubtedlythepeopleare rallyingaroundDr.Cluneandcooperatingwithhiminhisdifficulties inamannerhardlye"erequalledand certainlynotsurpassedforwholeheartedandraiselfishgenerosity.

Butastheburdenisunusually great,unusualeffortswillberequiredtoremoveit.Itishighlysatisfactory.toknowthatthepeople arefullydeterminedthatnoeffort willherelaxed,untilthishitherto crushingburdenofdebtiscompletelyliftedfromtheBishor'sshoulders.Allthisisabundantlyproved bythegiganticworkthatisnow infullswingandthatwillhecarriedonforanotherweek. Great credit.isduetoalltheenthusiastic workersfromFremantletoMidland Junction;formonthspasttheyhave beenuntiringintheireffortstomake theCoronationCarnivaltherecord breakingBazaarofWestAustralia.

Dr.Clune,inthecourseoffurther remarks,commentedonthe"happypoliticalblending"presentathis righthandthatafternoon.Hewas satisfiedthatthosepresenthadnot cometohearan,'.politicaladdresses, andhewasnotgoingtopermitthe el,quenceofthetonguetointerfere withthegenerosityofthepocket. TheSecretary,Mr.Richard E. Hourigan,andtheRev.Father Hayeshavenotsparedthemselves duringthePastfewweeksthework oflayingoutthegroundsanderectingtheStallswasenormousand yetthe..carriedouttheworkina frostadmirablemanner.TotransformtheoldPalacegroundsintoan idealvillagewasnoeasytask,but FatherHayesandMr.Hourigantackledtheworkbravelyandbroughtit toafinishthatcouldhardly be dreamtof.Toallthosewhoworkedsolongandsoenergeticallythe openingonSaturdayafternoonmust havebeenhighlysatisfactory. Theyallknewthateverythinginthis world,howevergooditmightbe,had itsworldlyside-thesideconnected withthatdrosstheycalledgold. ThePremier,Mr.J.Scaddan,was bornatMoonta,SouthAustraliain 1876,andisthus .15;yearsofage. Earl'.inhislifeMr.Scaddan'sparentsremovedtoEaglehawk,near Bendigo,Victoria,wherehewaseducatedatthePublicschool.Subsequentlyhetookuptheoccupationof aminer,andwasattractedtothe goldfieldsofWesternAustraliain 1896.Whileworkinginsomeof theKalgoorliemineshequalifiedas anengine-driver,andthenfollowed thelatteroccupation.Hebecame prominentlyassociatedwiththeEngine-drivers'Union,andin1904was selectedastheLabourcandidatefur Ivanhoe.Hewaseasilytriumphant, andheheldtheseatunopposedimp totherecentelections,when,under thealteredconditions,theelectorate becameknownasBrownhill-Ivanhoe, forwhichhewasreturnedunopposed.Hewasappointedleaderof theLabourPartyontheretirement Bathfromthatpositionin August,1910.

TheBishopofBallarat,inasking theArchbishoptoopenthebazaar, thankedhimandtheotherdistinguishedguestswhohadcomethere tohonourtheundertakingwiththeir Presenceandalsotoencouragethose engagedinit.Theyhadinthefirst placetheArchbishopofMelbourne, andtohimhewishedtosaythat hispresenceaddedonemoretothe longlistofservicestotheCatholics ofBallaratwhichhadbeengrowing sincehisarrivalinVictoria,twenty.fiveyearsago.Duringthatlong Periodtheyhadneverhadanimportantgatheringinthatcityforthe advancementofthecauseofreligion oreducationorChristiancharityat whichhewasnotaprominentfigure. HisPresencethatnightwastherefore% onlyarepetitionofarolenowvery familiartotheArchbishop,andone thatwasalwaysalivelysourceof satisfactiontothem.Theirgratitudetohimshouldbeallthemore livelyfromtheconsiderationthatin cominghemusthaveleftmanyan importantclaimunsatisfiedinhis ownCathedralCity,'Thoseclaims camefromeverydepartmentofhis extensiveandvariedrespondibilities, andwereasaruleveryexacting, andatthesametimeheneedhardlytellthemtheywerealwaysrespondedtowithanabilityandcompletenessthathadwonforhimthe admirationofhisfellow-citizens.lie waseverpreparedtoextendthe weightofhisgreatinfluencetowards everygoodcausewheninvitedtodo so.whetheritcamefromhisown dioceseoroutsideit.Hispresence now,wasafurtherillustrationof thatkindfeeling,andhe(theBishop),wasjustifiedintellinghimin theirnameaswellasinhisown, thattheyhighlyappreciatedthe complimenthehadpaidthem,and weredeeplygratefulforit.They werealsofavouredwiththepresenceofthedistinguishedgentleman whorenresentedBallaratintheFederalParliament.Thehighposition heoccupiedintheAustralianCoenmonweelthmustentailenormousresponsibilitiesonhim,andthemesserementofthoseresponsibilitiesmust. alsohethemeasureofthesacrifices hemusthavemadeincomingto manifestthatinterestandgoodwill

Amorewarm-hearted,moregenerous peoplethanthatofBallaratwas nottobefoundandhehopedthey wouldshowtheyhadneverbeen moretouchedthantheywere tonightbytheappealmadetothem bytheself-sacrificeoftheladies, andtheobjectforwhichtheywere invitedtoattend.

Tomymindthatisthe mostimportantandfundamental questionorthepresentday.Ifwe lookoutovereventheChristiannationsoftheworldandconsiderhow manymillionsareleadingblindlives utterlyobliviousofthefuture,and utterlyignorantofGod'slaw,can wenottracetheeffecttoitscause, namely,theabsenceofclear,definite, dogmaticreligiousinstructioninthe schools?
