Noman,exceptO'Connelldidso muchforthecauseofCatholicEmancipationasthefamous"J.K.L." thegreatDr.Doyle.Itwasat'.!oimbrainPortugalthathespent mostofhisstudentdaysandacquiredmuchofthateruditionwhichhe employedtosuchgoodpurposeen behalfofFaithandFatherland,in hisbattlesagainstbigotryandintolerance.Doylewasanalumnusof whatwascalledthe"LittleUniversity"buteventuallysucceededin forcingthedoorsofthebiguniversityitselfwhereanillustriouscountrymanofhis,FatherLukeWadding hadbeeneducatedbeforehim.Coimbrawasatthattimethemost celebrateduniversityinallEurope. Itwasmostdifficulttoobtainadegreethereandthecourseextended tofifteenyears.Duringhiscourse SpainandPortugalwereinvadedny Napoleon.ThestudentsofCoimbra wereenrolledagainsttheFrench. Doyleshowedmuchbravery,shoulderedhismusketandwentonguard. "Mr.Doyle,"writesFitzpatrick,his biographer,"executedhispartcum' amore. Hemateriallyservedthe nationalcausenotonlybytheexerciseofhiswisdom,tact,andforesight,butbytheinspiritinginfluence ofhisvoiceandexample.Heflung asidehisbooksoftheology,grasped theswordandexhortedtheapathetictoaction."

OnthefirstPage,weread: -"WhattheRosaryis,and howtouseit." Thejoyful,sorrowfulandgloriousmysteries arethengiven-suchasanyCatholic coulduse.Whatapleasingcontrast tothedayswhenCatholicswerestee ledidolatorsforpractisingthese samedevotions!

Monasticism intheAnglican Church. TheAnglican"Church Quarterly"informsusthat:-"Daricethelast6oyearsintheChurch ofEnglandtheauthorisedcommunity undervowshasbecome a fact.To-daythereareabout5,000 womenlivingincommunitieswhilea littleovercoomenarelikewiselivingthelifeofprayerandwork, undervows. FATALACCIDENT.

Inapreviousnumberofthe"Record,"dealingwithmissionaryepisodesamongthenativetribesinthe CanadianDominion,wetoldofthe drowningoftwoOblateFathersin 1908nearSmithLanding,andof thedrowningoftwoOblateBrothers inariverbetweenSturgeonLake andLittleSlaveLake.Wenowtell ofanotherdrowningfatalitywhich occurredonthe21stOctober1909, atFortAlbany(JamesBay),when twomoreBrotherslosttheirlives. Howquicklythesesadeventsfollowedoneanotherandhowsingular thateachfatalityshouldhaveclaimedtwovictims

TheOblateFathersnotonlyserve flourishingmissionsinthechiefcitiesoftheProvinceofQuebec,but theyarealsochargedwiththeevangelisationoftheIndianslivingin thevastinlanddistrictslyingnorth ofthesemissions.TheyhavemissionsatBetsiamites,PointeBleue (LakeSt.John),NorthTemiscarning,andManiwaki,allbeinginland stations.TheIndiansinthoseParti beingchildrenofthewoods,leadinga nomadiclife,theworkoftheFathersisdifficult,andnotaltogethersatisfactoryinitsresults.Thereis alsothemissionatFortAlbany,an IndianStation,wheretheFathers areoccupiedalltheyearwitharesidentpopulation.Theirlifesofar fromcivilisationistrulyapostolic.

FatherBoisseau,togetherwithsome menintheemployoftheHudsonBay Companywhocametohelp,wentto therescueoftheotherFatherand hislittlecompanions,andthesewere broughtsafelntoland.Profound sorrowwasfeltthroughoutthedistrictforthetwoBrotherswho.were lost;andforthemissiontheloss wasirreparable.OneoftheBrotherswas37yearsofage,andthe other47.

SomeStoriesaboutMixed Marriages

Thecryagainstmixedmarriages comesfromfarandnear,and,itmeet betrulysaid,thatinarrangingfor themwhentheyoccur,thechieftroublefallsuponthepriest.Aveteran Oblatemissionary,FatherBonnald, nowstationedatCrossLakeinthe vicariateofKeewatin,isnotwithouthisexperiencesinthismatter.

Whenthecanoewasonlyafew yardsfromtheshore,itsuddenlyencounteredtwonastywaveswhich struckitandoverturnedit. The wholepastywasthenthrowninto thewater.Somechildrenwhowere watchingthereturn,seeingtheaccidentrantothemissiontobringFatherBoisseau.WithallhasteFath-

TheCatholicfatherofthewouldbebridewasin,aconditionofdespair.Eitherthepartieswouldhave togetmarriedbeforeaminister,or therewouldbeadelayandthenall thepreparationswouldhavebeenin vain.HappilyFatherBonnaldpromisedtoconsiderwhatshould lei done,andhetoldthepartiesthat hewouldgivehisdecisioninthe morning.Heweighedtheinformationwhichhehadacquiredfromthe Parties,andthewholecircumstances ofthecase.Longbeforedaylight hewasarousedbyvisitorsathishotel.Aconveyancewasatthedoor, andhewastaitentoawell-heated chapel.,TheretheProtestantyoung manwaswaitingforhim.Heknew theCatholicprayersandhewasfairlyinstructed.HeaskedtobereceivedintotheChurch.FatherBonnaldcompliedwiththerequest.Both thepartiesmadetheirConfession, andthemarriagetookplace.The bride'sfatherwasmorethandelighted.Theweddingfestivitiesfollow-

Aed.SevenmonthslaterFatherBonnaldlearnedfromthepriestofthe placethattheconverthadmadehis FirstCommunion,andthat the marriagehadprovedahappyand satisfactory.one.

AtCrossLake,followinguponthe marriagejustrecorded,FatherBonnaldassistedatanotherinwhicha Protestant,.JacobO.,complyingwith theusualconditions,marriedaCatholicyoungwoman.Theyoung manwasharrassedbyhisfriends, andbyhisclergyman,whoinsisted uponthemarriagetakingplacein theProtestantplaceofworship,so hebeggedFatherBonnaldtohasten theperformanceoftheceremon'S andthiswasdone.

Disconcertedbywhethadtaken place,thedisappointedclergyman meanttoretaliatewhentherewas questionofasimilarmarriage.The occasionoffered,andhecalledthe harms,andcounteduponthecelebrationofthemarriageontheMonday morning.Letusseehowthematterturnedout.

OntheSundayeveningaftersunset,FatherBonnaldwasonhisway tovisitaparishionerwhosechild hadjustdied.Ontheiceofthe river,whichhewascrossing, he wasaccostedbythefatherofthecatholicpartytothecomingmarriage, whobeggedhimtoreturntothe mission,andtomarrytheparties.

ThePilgrimageofLoughDergclosedonTuesday,rethAugust,witha verylargecrowdofpilgrims.There wereathousandpersonsonthelittleislandonMonday,14th,ofwhom morethanhalfremainedtillTuesday.OnMondayevening,theVery Rev.Prior,CanonKeown,Enniskillen,saidthatthenumberofpilgrim duringthePresentseasonhadbeen largerthanduringanyyearsince+he Faminetimes.Thenumberhad beensteadilyincreasingduringshe decade,butthepresentyear'sincreasehadbeenthegreatestyet.FatherKeownreferredtothesatisfactionitgavehimtoseesuchlarge

Referringtothenewhospiceon theisland(whichisbeingrapidly pushedtocompletion,andpart of whichhasbeenopentopilgrimsduringthePastseason)hesaiditwould befullyopenbytheistofJuneneat year,andwouldcontain250beds. Whenthepupil'sinterestinhiswork hasbeenwon,bothbytheconviction ofitsadvantages,andbythepracticals'mpathvofhisteacherstostimulatehisefforts,hewillgetonif hehasability,andthelabouroftuitiononthePartoftheteacherswill beeasierandpleasanter.Pupils needbothhelpandencouragement. Thoughwesooftenrepeatthe prayercomposedforusbyOurDivineLordHimself,inwhichwe are taughttoaddressGodas"OurFather,"andtolookonHimandtreat Himassuch,stillitistobefeared thatonlytoooftenwedonotadverttothemeaningandforceofthe appellation,Father.Weareindanger,sometimes,especiallywhentrial§ Pressuponus,andthingsgowroag, ofnotthinkingofHisinfiniteloveand care.Allofuscanrecallinstances inourliveswhereinHeprovedHimselftobeatrueFather.NowGod neverchanges,thereforeatalltimes itistruetosay'thatnooneisso muchaFatherasHeis("Nemotam PaterquamDeus").
