Thesimplehomeisthebesthome. Moneycanbuymanythings,butitis valuelesswheretheessentialsofmorallifeareconcerned.Itcannotfor onelittleinstantbuytheatmospherewhichpervadestheidealhome. Thatisathingwhichispaidfor fromamoralbank,andthebankis inthehandsoftheparents. Its coinisnottangible-butitisthe fruitoftheirlives,anindescribable qualitywhichisfeltinstantlyby everystrangerwhocomesundertheir roof.Thisiscalledthetoneofthe home.Itistheself-expressionof theparents.

Iftheparentsarecultured,the homeiscultured.Iftheyarekindly,charitable,open-hearted,itat oncetakesonasubtleatmosphereof cheer.Iftheyarehonourableand honest,immediatelythehomecatches theirtoneandPlaysitsaccompanyingnote.Thechordtothatnote isgivenby.thevarying,butharmonioustonesofeachchildwhoiscomingtohmselforherselfunderits roof.Andiftheparentstrulylove oneanother,mysteriouslyandwonderfullytheirloveemphasises,colours,anddirectsthecharacterand toreofthehome.

Inallpracticalandmaterialteings thechildshouldbesubjecttothe willofhisparents.Toestablishauthorityinthenurseryisoneofthe firstdutiesofthemother.Thereis nohappinesslikethatofliving a well-orderedlife.Thechilddevelops bestwhosedail3.lifeisdirectedifs capableparents,andwhoiscompelledtoliveinobediencetorule.But howfarisitsafetoextendauthority? Shouldpersonalityin the childbeencouragedordiscouraged? Whereshouldtherightsofthechild asanindividualbegintoclaimconsideration? Inthisnewkingdomthelife of theirchild,theparentssoonbeginto realisethatthereisaportionover whichtheirrightasgoverningpower failstoproveefficient.Thechild belongstotheparent,andtheparentisresponsiblefortheactionsof thechild.Thereis,however,avast fieldofthought,instinct,andendeavourinthemindofthedeveloping childthatisverylittleinfluenced1:0!' thefactthatitbelongstoanyone. Itisthispricelessqualityofindividualitythatmakesthechildworth ans-thingtotheworld,anditisjust thisqualitythattheaverageparent sooften.overlooks. Evenifthe child'swholelifeishoundedby "Thoushalt,"and"Thoushalt not,"thereisyetbelongingtohim aninvisibleworld-hispersonal world-andit%isherethatrulesfail andtheegotismofparentsisoverthrown.

ThatpaperinterviewedArchbishop Coudert,O.M.I.,andelicitedfromhis GracethatinhisdioceseofColombo withatotalpopulationofamillion andahalf,thereare225,000Catholics.Oftheiaopriestswhoministertothem,thirtyarenatives.Of themanynunswhoteachtheschools andwhohavechafgeofinstitutions, about30oarenatives. Inthe schoolsare42,000children. InclosingtheinterviewhementionedthatjustbeforeleavingColombo forEurope,hehadconfirmedathousandchildren,andthat230ofthem, althougnquitesmall,hadmadetheir FirstCommunion.Hehadrelated thistotheHolyFather.

Suchwasthesortofquestionsthat people.andpeoplewhosetuptobe intelligent,usedtoaskatthetime. Andvery'foolishquestionstheywere. FatherKiely'sWorkinBoulder

Thepolite,punctual,neat,genial andpiousFatherKielyseemstyhave beencutoutforBoulderParish. SomeyearsagowhenhewasherehS CuratehecompletelywontherespectfulaffectionoftheBoulderpeople.Theyweresorrywhenhewas transferredtoBunbury,buttheyrejoicedagainwhenhecametoKalgoorliesometimeafterwards.When Busseltonclaimedhimandhadthe privilegeofhisministrations,both BoulderandKalgoorlieregrettedhis departurefromthe'Fields.Hewas alwaysandeverywhereatruePriest. Howevertheirsorrowwasturnedintoexultantjoy,whenDr.CloneaPpointedFatherKielytotakechercr oftheBoulderParish.Thatitwas animportant,apopular.andawise appointmentwasconclusivelyproved toallthosewhowitnessedthesuccessfulceremoniesatBoulderonlast Sunday.

FatherKielyisonlyafewmonths inchargeofBoulderParish,buthe hasliterallydonewondersduring thattimeandthegreatfeatureof hisadministrationisthegradualAdvanceofParochialworkandtheunpretentiousmannerofthePriest hileself.

HehasbuiltandequippedacommodiousandbeautifulPresbytery, hehasthoroughlyorganisedhisparish,hehasdonemorefortheCatholicPressamongsthisflockthan.any otherPriestintheDiocese,andhe hasbroughtdowntoactualfactstobrickandmortar-theoft-deferred, andlong-discussed,andmostnecessaryquestionoftheBoulderNew Church.FatherKiely'sefTortsare ablysecondedbyhiszealousassistant,FatherPat.Sheridanandby themembersofhisChurchCommittee.

appealwasfoundtobewarmerand moresubstantialthanthatifany otherParishintheDiocese-noteven exceptiagtheirbig,rich,nethhoeringsister,Kalgoorlie-Aellaise).I onlyregretthatsomeofmypredecessors,especiallethosewhodid mostofthepioneeringwoe-.arenot hereto-daytowitncesthislatest roofofthegenerosityofthepeople ofBoulder.Asyet,Icennotsay exactlywhatthebuildingwillcost, thematterwasinthehandsofa Committeeofpracticalmenwho couldbereliedontohavethework donethoroughlyandatthesmallest

thisday,andhadcometocelebrate therealisationoftheirardentlonging.Onethoughttheyshouldconnectwiththebuildingofanewchurch wasthattheywerebuildingahome forOurBlessedLord.Theydecoratedtheirownhomesandmadethem neatandtidyandcomfortable,and surelyasCatholicstheyshouldbe evenmoreanxioustohavethebuilding ellt neatlyfurnishedandbeautifully equipped,inwhichtheKing of Glorywastodwell.Everymanwho hadsubscribedtothe£1700already raised,andwhowouldsubscribelateron,shouldrememberthathewas subscribingtoahomeforChrist. Thefactthattheywerecalledupon toequipandfurnishahomeforthe Godwhogavethemeverything shouldstimulatetheirgenerosity', shouldwarmtheirhearts,andmove themontoleavenothingundone,so thatonthedaythechurchwasopeneditshouldbefreefromdebt. 'WhenSolomonbuilthistempleall natureandnationswereleviedfor tribute.TheminesofOphirgave uptheirgold,theseagaveupits Pearls,andskilfulworkmeninfresco andcornicefilledthebuildingwith beautifuldesigns.Nationswerelaid undertributetobuildatemplethat wasworthyofthegloryofGod, andwaslittobeashrineforGod. OurBlessedLorddidnotdwell withtheseasHedwellswithus. HereyouwillhaveDurBlessedLord andSaviourHimselfdwellingwith sounightandtheeintheTabernacle, hereyouwillhavetheblessingsand thegracesofthegreatSacrificeof Calvary,andtherefreshingSacramentsoftheChurch.Inconclusion HisLordshipthankedthegoodpeopleofBoulderfortheirsupportand encouragement.hethankedFather KielyandhiscommitteethememthersoftheHibernianSocietyandthe CrossbearerfromKalgoorliewho addedtotheirceremoniesanairof liturgicalcorrectness.Hehadno doubtthatwhenhecameback,as hehopedtodo,toopentheChurch, itwouldhefreefromtheshadowof theencumbranceofdebt,andthat itwouldheagladandgloriousday forthemembersofthechurchin Boulder.

AstheBishopwasannouncedto Preachattheeveningdevotionsthe Ohurchwascrowdedtothedoors.It wasasermonworthyoftheoccasion, ontheallimportantsubject:THE TRUEFAITH.

Takingashistext,St.Paul's words:-"IliveintheFaithofthe SonofGod,wholovedme,anddeliveredHimselfforme,"HisLordshipcommencedhisdiscourse,byreferringtothenumerousblessingsand giftswithwhichGodsurroundsus aversda)ofourlives,pointingout thatamongstthesegiftsthegreatest, Iliathemostimportant,thegrandestand themostvaluableunderHeavenis thePRICELESSGIFTOFTHE TRUEFAITH.WithoutFaithwe maypleasemanorwoman,wemac withoutFaithpleaseatown,ora province,aconstituency,oranation,butwehaveitoninspiredword that"WITHOUTFAITHITISIMPOSSIBLETOPLEASEGOD."We mapPleasemen,wemaypleasea nationofmen,wemaypleasethe worldbut,"whatdothitProfit," "whatwillitavail,"usintheend ifwedonotplease,ifwehavenot pleased,theGodwhocreatedus,who watchesoverus,whowilljudgeis, towhomwemustrenderastrict account?

St.PaultellsmethatifIhavenot FaithIcannotpleaseGod;Faith, therefore,whichenablesmetoplease Godisthebestandthehighestgift. Ourlife-longdutyoughttoheto guard,tofoster,tostrengthen,to increase,andtopreserveourfaith. Inthosedaysespecially,whenmaterialismisabroad,weoughttobe watchfulandcareful,weoughtabove alltolaythistruthwelltoheart: "WITHOUTFAITHITISIMPOSSIBLETOPLEASEGOD."

NotonlyisFaithlightlythought ofnowadas,hutitslossisseldom seriouslyconsidered,seldomornever bitterlylimentedasthelossofparent,ofchild,offortune,orofbusiness.Heartsarebroken,tearsare shed,andtimeisspentinregretting thesevariouslosses,hutwhatare anyorallofthemincomparison withthelossoftheFaith? But,alas,how manybarterand trampleuponthis bestofallgifts forsomesensual gratification,some earthly some passing worldlyconsideration!.Andwhy isthis? Simply h?causetheydo rotunderstandits value, beeaus:, theyhavenever beenpenetrated withatruesense Ititsimportance, itsaecessit,and itsrriceless112ssings.

OUR FIRST DUTY ISTO AVOID THE UNGERSwhich haveledothersto thelossofthe Faith.Whatc.re those dangers, thoseperils,those Pitfallsoverwhich othershavefallen headlong,shatteringeveryvestige oftheirFaith? THEFIRST DANGERISIGNORANCE.-This isoneofour teoststubborn obstacles.Byignorancewedonot meanilliteracy,forsometiines whohavebeenunableei-hrtoreal ortowrite,havebeenhlilss-NIwit'i amorethoroughgrasprft`17..tri'c ['fifththanperhapsthem's*lesraed theologian.Bp"ignorance"here, wemeanignoranceofthetrueFaith, ignoranceofthefundamentaltruths, ignoranceofthegreatimportanceof

Faith.Thisignoranceissometimes moredenseandmorefrequentamongtherefinedandtheculturedin theworldthanamongstthepoor, whomtheworldlooksuponasignorant. TheProphetOsee,complainedthattherewasnolnnowledge ofGodintheland,andasaconsequencethat"lyingandadultery,and Perjuryandmurderwererifeamong thepeople."Aidto-daythereis farlessknowledgeofGodinthe

redHeart,theHolyMotherofclod andtheSaints.Godisforgotten bythegreatofthisworld,because theyhavenotrue,no'rightknowledgeofGod.Howcanamanor awomanholdfastandclingtothe FaithifhedoesnotknowandbelievethattheFaithisthebestgift ofGod.

Ifayounggirlhasnotatrue knowledgeoftheFaithandanidea ofitsallimportance,howwillshe

ongthemandaskweretheywell trainedintheirFaith?Youwill findthatinninecasesoutoftenthey hadonlyaveneer,ashallowfaith,a superficialknowledgeofCatholic Truth:-"THEYKNEWNOTTHE GIFTOFGOD."

Ontheotherhandlookatthose whohavebeenbroughtupinthetrue Faithandwhohavebeenproperb, groundedinitsdoctrines! No bribe,nooffer,noreward,willever inducethemtobetraytheirfaithor topartwiththispricelessgift.

ANDTHISBRINGSUSTOTHE ALL-IMPORTANTSUBJECT,-namely,theantidote;namely-tohavethe childrentaughtandgroundedthoroughlyinallthedoctrinesofthe trueFaith. Wemustknowour Faiththoroughly;wemustbecourageouslyreadytodefendit. We mustnotbeafraidoftheshaftof ridiculeorthejibeoftheinfidel,or thescornoftheworldling. We mustbuyandreadandmeditateuponCatholicliterature,wemustrespectandhonourCatholicpictures.
