When.peoplegettogetheristheabsentspared?Ifagoodisperformeditisattributedtohypocrisy. ifwereceiveafavourinsteadofbeinggrateful,thefirstthoughtis whathasthedonorexpected.This unworthythoughtstringsfrom a basenessthatisalmostuniversal, thatsmostreadytoreceiveand equallyreadytohatethedonor's generoushand.Well,weshallknow eachother'ssecretsinshereafter

NewWestminsterhasnowforover aoyearsbeenthesceneoftheworkof theOblatesofMaryImmaculate.The goldenjubileeoftheirarrivalthere waskeptwithmuchsolemnityand festivityonthe15thAugust1910. The'OblatescrossedtheUnited StatesandreachedWallaWalla(Oregon)inSeptember,1847. They foundedseveralmissionsinwhatis nowtheStateofWashingtonbut in18;7theywenttoVancouverIsland.Thencein186o,theywentto themainland,andestablishedtheir firstmissionatavillageontheFraserRiver,whichintimedeveloped intotheimportanttownof New Westminster.Thefirstpioneerswho reachedWallaWallaha-egoneto theirrewardbutFatherFouquet, whofoundedthefirstmissiononthe FraserRiverisstillwithus,being stationedatMissionCity.Heis now8oyearsofage. TheOblates inP866,foundedSt.LouisCollegeat NewWestminster,inwhichmanyprominentmeninthosepartsreceived theireducation. FromtheFraser RiverMission,theoblatessoonmovednorthwardandeastward,tocombattheforcesofevil,andtobring intothechurchtheIndiansofvarioustribes,inmanyofwhomthere werebutfewtraitsofcivilisation. Thehistoryoftheirworkisfull ofinterest.Manywerethedifficultieswithwhichtheyhadtocontend. MuchgoodwasenactedbyestablishingschoolsfortheIndians. The firstwasthatatMissionCity.At theendof1863,PiusIX.divided theimmenseVicariateofBishopLeasers,leavingtohimVancouver,and confidingtotheOblatesthemainland.BishopD'Herbomez,O.M.I., wasthefirstVicarApostolicofBritishColumbia.Uponhisdeathin 189o,hewassucceededbyBishop Durien,O.M.I.,uponwhosedeathin 11899Dr.Dontenwill,O.M.I.,became BishopofNewWestminster.AnaccountofthelaboursoftheOblates, publishedlastyear,tellsofthedifficultiescontendedwithandthen,referringtotheresults,says"The laboursandzealofthesepioneersof theGospelwerecrownedwithsuccess,fortheyhaveconvertedover 15,00onatives,whoforpietyandregularityoflifearebehindr.oother neophyteswhileforindustry,and obediencetothelawsofthecountry theyaresecondtonone."

TherearemanyintermentsatKamloops,asitisaplaceofresortfor cripples,andpersonssufferingfrom lungdisease.Afterafewdays,fatherLeJeunewascalledtoadistancetoattendaPersonwho was dying.Hehappilyarrivedintime. Ashisjournoywok diensofDeadman'sCreek,hevisited them,and'whilewiththemforfour orfivedays,hegaveHolyCommuniontoaboutforty.Leavingthere onApril2;rd,hewentontotoe ValleyoftheNicola,whereheremaineduntiltheistofMay. The nativestheresadlyneedamissionin thecentreofwhatisavastdistrict. IfonewereestablishedatMerrit, fromthereCanfordandManeette Lakemightreceiveregularvisits. Religiousfervourisnotthedistinguishingfeatureofthepeoplethere, soFatherLeJeunehadnottheconsolationofseeingmanyapproach theholysacraments.
'HewasbackatKamloopsforthe FestivaloftheAscension. During thethreedaysofhisstayhegave polyCommuniontoZoopersons. liewasathisownmissionofSalmonArmintimeforthefollowing Sunday,andsaidMassthereintile twochapels,forthereisoneforthe Indiansandanotherforthewhites. Again,leavingorthesamedayFatherLeJeunemadehiswas-to Shushwap,wherehestayedthree days,repeatingwithsimilarsatisfactoryresults,theworkofhisholy ministryasbefore.OntheWednesdayhewasagainatKamloops,where heremaineduntilSaturday,atth May.HethenleftforNorthThompson,49milesdistant,takingwith himacarpenter.Thechapelthere, owingtoitssituationwassubjectto inundations,anditwasdecidedto erectanotherhalfamilefromit. Thepeoplewerecalledtogetheron WhitSundayafterMass,the new sitewasvisited,andallarrangementswerethereuponmadeforexpeditiouswork.Thesawmillwas sevenmilesdistant.Pressurewas putonthere.Beginningthework athalf-pastfouronMondaymorning itwasnotleftoffuntilthewhole constructionwascomplete. The shingleswereprocuredfromKamloops.Allwasfinishedor.the-Mondayfollowing,FatherLeJeuneencouragingtheworkers,anddirecting everything.Thespotisknownas Krow-na-ya.Masswassaidinthe oldchapelonMonday2ardMay anditwasthendismantled,partsof itsconstructionbeingusedinthenew building.
Suchisthenarrativeweofferour readerstoshowwhatmissionariesin BritishColumbiahavetodotoconvertthenativesandtoministerto theirspiritualwants.
Since1908thenorthernportionof thisCanadianprovince,togetherwith Yukon,havebeenseparatedfromthe dioceseofNewWestminsterandplacedunderal'refectApostolic. A changewasalsomadeintheecclesiasticadministration.Dr.Dontenwill hadbeenmadeArchbishopofVancouver,butashewaselectedSuperiorGeneraloftheOblatesofMary Immaculate,hewastransferredand becameTitularArchbishopofPtolemais.TheMostRev.NeilMcNeil succeededhimasArchbishopofVancouver.

ishionersareforthemostpartworamenemployedinfactoriesandstoresa ThisdisplayseemsmoremarkedLa everyoccasion.
Uponthe17thOctober,1904,the FeastofBlessedMargaretMary,the workoforganisingthe"Guardof Honour,"oftheSacredHeartwas entrustedtoFatherLelievre. Superiorsaidtohim"IhaveconfidenceintheSacredHeart. How manyfavoursmaybeobtained,and howmanydisordersmaybearrested bymeansofthisdevotionIbless youandyourwork."
Atthefirstmeetingonly32men attended.Ladieswerethenenlisted andfiftypromisedtoenrolteneach one.Thusthereshouldhavebeen aoomembersbutwhenthegatheringto&Placetherewerepresent r,80o.Theworkwasfairlystart andinfiveyears'timethenumb was8,00fi.FatherLelievreeven visitedthevaliousworkshops,and althoughsuchacoursewasnovel,he waswellreceived,andhissuccess surpassedeveryanticipation.

ThereisonefactthataCatholic studentshouldalwaysremember,and thatiswhenEvoldtionoranyscientificproblemseemstobeopposedto hisFaiththeProblemcannot be true,fortheworksoftheCreator cannevercontradictthewordsof theCreator.Henceheshouldcloselyexaminetheproblemonscientific groundsalone.Take,forexample, Darwinism,whichisusedatthePresentdaybyRationaliststounderminereligion. Mostpeoplethink thatDarwinismisEvolution,and EvolutionisDarwinism. Inone sensetheyareright,forifithad notbeenforthepublication"Onthe OriginofSpeciesbyMhansofNaturalSelection,"in1859,byCharles Darwin,Evolutionwouldnothave bulkedsolargelyinthepublicmind duringthepastfiftyyears.Whilst thegeneraltheoryofEvolutionhas causedspeculationfromtheearliest daysofthehumanrace,toDarwin andDr.A.R.WallacemustbeaccordedthehonourofnotonlytheorizingaboutEvolution,butofseeking toproveitstruthbytheirlife-long laboursinthestudyofpla..tand animallife.Darwinism,whilstembracingthegeneraltheoryofEvolution,introducesacausetoaccount forthedevelopmentofthehigher fromthelowerformsoflife,andthis causeistermed"naturalselection," or"thesurvivalofthefittest."

Itisratherastrikingcoincidence thatinthisverysameyear,18o3, FatherDixon,asweknow,celebratedwithachalicewhichaconvict hadfashionedoutoftin,andwas vestedwithachasublemadefrom thecurtainsofthepoor.Thiswas somehundredandeightyearsago. Followingonthisgrandresponsea beautifulilluminatedaddress-the workofthelocalConvent-waspresentedtohisLordshipbyWarden Gibbons,whowelcomedhimtoMenziesonbehalfoftheCatholicsofthe Parish.
OnThursdaymorning,immediately aftertheniceo'clockMasstheBishop,assistedbyFathersKielyand DonogheradministeredtheSacramentofConfirmationtoabout2 dozenchildren.TheSponsorswere Mr.Cogan,andMrs.Copley. TheBishopandpartyhadintended leavingtownonThursday,on theirwaytoNorsemanforthe followingSunday,butthepeoplewouldnothearofit,even Bishopsattimescan'thavetheir ownway-theywantedtopayhim stillfurtherhonourtogivesomethinglikeadequateexpressiontothe affectiontheybearhimandtotheesteeminwhichtheyholdhimandso theymadeourBishopprisonertill Fridaymorning.
BeforehiscomingwewereallProtestantsandCatholicsalike,onthe tip-toeofexcitement,togivehima fittingwelcome.ThoughthisdistriCt-theUltimaThuleofthediocese. -wasoneofthelastplacestohe visited,wedecidedthatitshouldbe oneofthefirstinthewarmthof thereception.
OnlyaweekagoWefirstlearned thedayoftheBishop'sarrival.We thentriedtobookthetownhallfor Thursdaynight,buttoourchagiin atravellingentertainmentcompany' hadforestalledusandwouldnot postponetheirengagement.This wasindeedalioninthepath,forthe townhallistheonlyhallusedin thistown.Butwewerenottobe beaten.WethoughtoftheoldMaorihall,whichinthehalcyondays gonebyoftdidvibratewiththe whirofMenzies'life.Trueithad notbeenusedforyears-inchesof dusthadaccummulatedonitsfloor andwalls-ithadnoseats,lights, etc.Buttheseobstaclesweretrifles.Abandofladiesandgentsgot towork,clearedouttherubbish, decoratedthewallswithflagsfrom thetownhall,gotpiano,chairsand tablesfromtheAnglican,Wesleyan, andPresbyterianChurches,installed agasometerandlightedthescene withraysofthesoftaceytelene.The eveningofthe"social"at7.30they hadeverythinginsuch"concert" pitchthattheshadesofpoorold BillWalterwaschucklingwithglee. OnWednesdaylast,ourbeloved Bishop,Dr.(lune,accompanied lieanRobinson,andFathersMoloney,KielyandDonogher,arrivedinMenziesbytheexpressandweremet atthestationbyanumberofprominentresidentsofthetownanddriventothePresbytery,wherethey weretheguestsofRev.FatherMeloney.Alltheroomsofthespacious Presbyterywerethrownopenforthe occasionandwhenthedecorating skillandtasteoftheladieshaddone itsparttheyshoneoutinalltheir splendourandbeauty.Thatevening hisLordship,thepriestsandsome oftheleadingCatholicsdinedatMr. Cogan's.At7.30p.m.Dr.Clune mettheCatholicsofthetownand districtintheChurch,andplacedbefdrethemthefinancialstateofoit dioceseheappealedtothewarmheartedandgenerousneonleofMenziestofallinlinewiththerestof theCatholicsoftheDiocesenotwithstandingtheirownlocaldebt, andhelphimtocarrythegigantic loadlaidonhisshoulders. The responsesurprisedeveryone-itwas forsuchaqdietlittleplacemagnificent-almost£300.Butthen,our Bishophas"suchawonderfulwas. withhim,"thatreallythoughwe couldillaffordsuchalargesum,yet therewasaPleasureingivingit. Hiswords,soirresistibly-touching, gostraighttotheheartandtake possessionofitandmakeusallhis captives.

TheRev.AlecHay(Methodist), waspleasedtoaddhiswelcomeon behalfoftheMethodistChurch.If suchdutieswereoneroustoazentlemanliketheRev.Needhamwhatmust itbeforhimself-oftenderyears. Thehallwasappropriatelydecoratedfortheauspiciousoccasion,and thelargeassemblage,representative ofallshadesofreligiousbelief,was presidedoverbyWardenGibbons, whoreadapologiesforunavoidable absencefromMr.H.Gregory,M.L.A. MayorSmithandtheRev.A.E. Dunning(Presbyterian).Thelocal religiousdenominationswererepresentedbyFatherMoloney,Rev.W. R.Needham(Anglican),theRev. Alec.Hay(Methodist),andAdjutantSnellgrove(SalvationArms).' WardenGibbonsregeettedtheabsenceoftheappointedchairman(MayorSmith)throughsickness,but expresseddelightinwelcomingBishopChinetoMenzies.Hisreputationhadprecededhim,hebeinga gentleman.commandingtherespect ofnotonlythemembersofhiscommunion,batofthepublicatlarge.It wasthereforethoughtadvisablethat HisLordshipshouldbeaccordeda publicreception,whichwouldenable thePublicofMenziestobebrought intocontactwithhim.
