Atthededicationofthe1ohnHowardPaynememorialgateatUnion Cottage,NewYork,agrandnephew ofthePoet,toldhowthewordsof "HorneSweetHome"cametobe written.

PaynewaslivinginParkatthe time,Mr.Luquersaid,andwasactingasDramaticAgentforCovent GardenTheatre.Hewascomfortablyestablishedinanapartmenton thePalaisRoyale.Notmanymonths beforehisfortunehadbeenatlow ebb,followingadisastrousattempt attheatricalmanagementinLondon,buthehadextricatedhimaelf fromhisfinancialdifficulties. He waspreparingtwoplaysandasocalledoperaforproductionatCoventGarden,andithappenedthatthe themeoftheoperawasthelonging forhomeofanunhapP3exiledgirl.

Asongwasneededfortheheroine,"Clari"tosingatherentranceinthefirstact,andto thisrequirementPaynewrotethe verseswhichweretomakehimfamous.Hewroteundoubtedlyunder thestressofstrongemotion,andthe wordsexpressedhisownheartfeltdesire,forit'wastenyearssincebe hadlefthisfamilyandfriends,and duringthattimehehadsuffered manyseveretrials.

Aboutamonthlaterheforwarded theoperatoHenryR.Ilishop,the musicaldirectorofCoventGarden, suggestinganairfor"Home,Sweet Home,"whichBishopsoadmirably adaptedthatthewordsandmelody areinseparablyassociated. "Clari,"wasproducedontheNth May,1823,and"Home,Sweet Home,"assungbythecharming AnnMariaTree,wasreceivedwith enthusiasm,itspopularityincreasing fromdaytoday.

HisEminence,theCardinalsaid anothervisitonSunday,August 6thtotheflourishingdistrict of Kensingtonandsolemnlyblessedthe additionstotheschool-church.Messrs.W.A.Redmond,M.P.,andJ. T.Donovan,theIrishenvoys,accompaniedtheCardinal,andwere accordedasplendidwelcome.

Afterthereligiousceremonyhad beenPerformedbytheCardinal,a publicmeetingwasheld,atwhich, theVeryRev.FatherTreand,M.S. H.,cordiallywelcomedhisEminence andtheenvosstotheparish. In thecourseofhisremarksFather Treandsaiditwasonlyfouryears sincethebuildinghadbeenstarted, butAeitegrowthinnumberofParishioneMhadnecessitatedthesubstan- tialadditionsjustcompletedtothe designofMessrs.SheerinandHennessy,byMr.Ptolemy.

HisEminencesaiditwasamatterofdutytocongratulatethepar- ishionersonthecompletionofthe additionswhichsowellharmonised withtheoldbuilding.Wherever theirschoolsorchurcheswerebuilt, .heywerefilledatonce.Onlyafew weel-;sagoheopenedaschool at 'oogee,whichcommencedwithso pupils,hutto-daytherewereover soitspokewellforthedevotion sithedistrict,andfortheharmony whichexistedbetweenthepriestsand thePeople.

THEPRIMARYMISSIONOFTHE CHURCHWASTOLEADHER CHILDRENINTOTHEI'ATHSOF PIETYANDRELIGION,SoTHAT THEYWOULDATTAINTHEIRETERNALREWARD.

Atthesametimesheassimilated everythingbrightandbeautiful roundher,inspireditwithnewlife, sothatineveryagethebeneficent influenceofthechurchwouldbeseen ineverythingaroundher.

TherewereatleastiooCathedrals spreadoverGermany,England,and othercountriesinEurope,awitness totheChurch'sinfluenceonart.In theseCathedralseverybranchofart painting,sculpture,illuminating workingoldandsilverwasfoundin thehigheststateofperfection.

Mr.Gladstone-perhapsthegreatratstatesmenofmoderntimes-used heautifulwordsinregardtothe Church.Lookingatitinhistorical light,andconsideringitsrelationto thecivilpowers,hesaid"THE CATHOLICCHURCHHASMARCHEDFORranoYEARSATTHE HEADOFCIVILISATION."Such wordsshowedMr.Gladstone'sappre- ciationofthegreatworkachievedty theChurch.

EVILSOFNON-RELIGION. HehopedthatinAustraliasomeof thosegreatthingsmightbeachieved butiftheywishedtoattainthat destiny,thentheymustbeginin theschools.WHATTHESCHOOLS WERETO-DAYTHECOMMONWEALTHWOULDBETO-MORROW.

ThegreatNapoleonhadhadhisexperienceofpaganschoolsinFrance. Religionwasabolishedintheschools in1789;25yearsafterNapoleonordereditsrestoration.Hewasassedwhyhadhedoneso,andhegave thebluntanswer(soldierashewas)1 thattheresultattainedbyschoolst withoutreligionwastobringaround them"cleverdevils."This was stronglanguage,butiftheybanished religionfromtheschoolstheycould onlylookforthesameresults.Asg theoldIrishfarmersaid."If,ou plantcabbagesyoucan'texpecta cropofpotatoes."

TheChurchplantsinthemindsof thechildrenprinciplesofvirtue,takest thembythehandandleadsthemon inpathsthatshallmakethemthe bestofcitizensandthebestChristians.

Hetrustedtheschoolswouldalwayspursuethesamepath.

HisHolinessPopePiusX. said thattheCHILDRENMUSTBEIMBUEDWITHAGREATLOVEOF THEREDEEMER,ANDTHISWAS THEWORKOFTHESCHOOLS. THEYWERESIGN-POSTSONTHE WAYTOHEAVEN.

Schoolswithoutreligionmarked deviouspaths,whichthoughperhaps strewnwithflowers,ledtoprecipices oferror.Churchwithoutfaithwas theconsequenceofschoolwithout religion.

TheCardinalreferredtothepresenceoftheIrishenvoysfromthe landoftheWest,andsaidTHAT NOCOUNTRYINTHEOLDWORLD WASMORE DISTINGUISHED THAN IRELANDFORITS SCHOOLS.Thedaysofpersecution came,butIrelandpreserveditsmusicandlanguage,andwhenthedawn ofbetterdayswasusheredin,they foundanationdemandingitsrights, nowtohecrownedwithsuccess,and ledby,thePartytowhichtheenvoysbelonged.

TheCardinalconcludedwithahope forthecontinuedprosperityofthe Catholicschoolsandaeulogyofthe devotionandself-sacrificeoftheteachingSisters

Mr.F.Coen,inmovingtheopen- ingofasubscriptionlist,referredto thequestionofStateaidtotheCatholicschools,andtotheresultsattainedbytheself-sacrificeof she People. HesaidFatherTreand mightwellinscribeovertheportals ofthenewbuilding"ProDeopro Patria"(forGodand-forcountry), fortheworkoftheCatholicChurch andtheCatholicschool(happily combinedinthatbuilding)was fruitfulforreligionandgoodcitizenship.

Sir,-If,intheyearstocome,when seatachievementsthatarenowbut aspirationshavebecomehistorical vents,thestrangershouldaskthe hildrenofAustraliatonamesome ofthemenwhodeservebesttobe rankedasthefounders.oftheAilsraliannationitismyearnesthope thatamongstthegreatnamesmentionedwillbethatofPatrickFrancisCardinalMoran.Therelivesno manto-daywhohasgivenamore tnremittingattentionthanmyselfto whathasbeendoneduringthelast thirtyyearstoraiseourowncountryfromacongeriesofjarringColoniestothepositionofaPotential nation,andIknowbetterthanmost thatthegreatCardinalhas,from timetotime,renderedservicesofthe mostpricelessvaluetothecauseof Australiannationality.

Foralongtimetheenema-that istheenemyofthatideal-didnot noticethetrueinwardnessofwhat theCardinalhasbeensosplendidly helpingbutcommentsmadeonthe achievementofAprilaSlast,andaboveall,therecentannouncement thatthechildrenoftheChurch,or. onedayintheyear,andthat-oh! theinspirationoftheidea!-onthe jingoisticEmpireDay,weretohe taughtAustralianpatriotismhas somewhatawakenedthedull-witted foewhoisatlastarousedtothe factthatAustraliannationalityhas aPowerfulallyintheCardinal;and thatapartfromhisdutiesasthe chiefshepherdofagreatChurchhe cansparetimetoteachhisflockto dotheirpartintheestablishingsecurelyandnobly.ofagreatCommonwealth.Theenemyhas,infact, awakenedtothefactthataprince oftheCatholicChurchmayalsobe ademocrat,andaleaderofthedemocracyinsecularthings. They perceive,butwithjaundicedeyes, thatdistortthetruth,that,whilst caringfortheinterestsofhispeople intheworldtocome,hemayalso tenderlyregardtheirinterestsinthis andthattothatendhedesiresto enablethemtobeworthycitizensof anationinwhich,underhisleadership,theyshalldotheirpart,and thatamagnificentonetobenobly found,andwhich,whileholdingit safeamidstthestorms,theyshall teachtheirchildrentoguardwith theirbloodandintellectthroughallthevicissitudesofthefuture.

TheCardinaltoldtheSt.Patrick's DayCommitteeonarrivinginSydneyfromPerth,ofhisvisit to WesternAustralia."WhenwearrivedinPerth,"hesaid,"itwasa working-man'sholiday,aTuesday. AtFremantlethewholebodyofthe peopleintheirworking-dresssurroundedtheOrsovaasfarasthey could,afterwardsaccompanyingus totheTownHall,toapproachwhich% itwashardlypossiblebecauseofthe immenseCrowdthatbesiegedit.We didnotgetoutcfFremantleuntil aboutIo'clock,andonarrival,n Perthweweremetattherailway stationbyanotherimmensecrowd, andaprocessiontookusto TownHall,wheretheCatholicMa:.oraccordedusacivicreception.Certainlyhesparednoexpense,aseverythingwasonamostlavishscale, andalltheleadingcitizens were present.AfterasumptuousrePas. Mr.Redmond,attherequest theCardinal,addressedthemeeting andexpressedhispleasureatthe honourtenderedtotheenvoysbythe Cardinal'sinvitationtobepresent. Hedaredsaythatinthathumble buildingtherewouldbefoundasNorthypriestsofpietyanddevotionas inthegrandCathedralsoftheold world.Hespokeofthesuccessof theeffortsfortheestablishmentofa CatholicUniversityinDublin,and concludedwithagracefulreference totheworkoftheCardinal.

Butsomanyaccentedtheinvitation toattendthatfirstthefrontrankof thebosswasmarchedaway. But thecrowdwasstillunaccommodated. Thenthesecondrankwasremoved, andbeforehalfanhourhadelapsed, therewasnot,withtheexceptionof theboywhoreadtheaddress, a singleladintheroom.Ontheday ofourdeparturethepeoplecharteredthelargeststeamertheycould Procure,andaccompaniedusdown therivertoFremantle.Allthe leadingcitizenswereaboard,andI neversawavesselsocrowded.There wasn'taninchofvacantspace,and

WHATACARDINALIS.

Ofthemonstrance,itisdifficultto speaktoohighly.Itdazzlesatfirst sightbythereflectedlightfromthe burnishedgoldraysthatsurroundus withacoronaoflight,thecentre inwhichtheBlessedSacramentis placed. Thenasoneexaminesit morecloselyitisseentoberichly adornedwithpreciousstones,some ofrarevalueandgreatbeauty-brilliants,sapphires,andotherjewels.

Aflatenamelledcircleofabluishgreenground,ornamentedwithgold interwovenpatterns,surroundsthe centraldiskofthemonstrance.The raysthatyrojectfromthiscentre arewavy,resemblingdamesalternatingwithstraightrays.Atthe junctionwiththehandleorpillarexquisitely-carvedheadsofcherubsin highreliefareplaced,andaroundthe wholeisaseriesoftrefoils-theartisticapplicationoftheshamrock. OnthestalkorPillararetheEucharisticsymbolssoexpressiveof wheatearsandcrapesinalto-relievo,completingthechiefdecorations inagrandandnoblespecimenof richecclesiasticalart.

ThedignityofCardinalisagreat one.IttakesPrecedenceofallothAugustersintheChurch,andstandsnext tothatofthePapacyitself.Its functionsarethenoblestthatman canbecalledupontodischarge.A Cardinalisthefriend,thefamiliar, thecounselloroftheVicarofChrist, andtakespartwithhiminthegovernmentoftheUniversalChurch.Its scarletmakesthosewhowearitthe equalsofkings.ThroughtheChristianagesaspecialprovidenceseems tohaveguidedthePontiffsintheir selectionsofCardinals.Theflower ofthehumanrace,themenwho,of allotherswereconspicuousforlearningandsanctityforreligious2.eal andpracticalPrudence,areuponthe rollofCardinalsoftheCatholic Church.Itisapositionofthe greatestresponsibility.Itimatestimonyfromthemostaugustthrone inChristendomofthechoicestgifts ofmindandheartinthosewhoare selectedtowearitsinsignia.Such isthedignitybornebyHisEminence CardinalMoranduringthepastquarterofacentury,onthevery.frontiersoftheKingdomofGod.

Thedayswereoverwhen therewasnobalminGalaad,uo physicianthere;andtheAustralian Churchhadsetherself,inpeace,to layingfoundationsfortheagesto come. Shewaslengtheningher cordsandstrengtheningherstakes, withfullconfidenceinherfuturesuccesses.Theactivehostilityofearlygovernmentofficials,thecolddisdainofaProtestantcommunitydid notmakeherfalterforamomentin herloyaltytoCatholicprinciples.
