shallPartakeofmyfeast."He comparedthiswiththefateofthose whoareinvitednowtobeactivein defendingtheinterestsofJesus Christ,butwhosubmitexcusesof business,pleasureandmoney-mak- ing.
FatherDuarte,saidinpart "WhatarewedoingforCetal?In confirmationwesolemnlypromisedto besoldiersofChrist,andasHissoldierscanwestandidlewhileallthe Powersofdarknessareunitedina terriblecampaignagainstHisChurch -amorepowerful,systematicand treacherouscampaignthansheever sufferedinherpastglorioushistory? "Asaresultofthiscampaign thousandsofsoulsforwhichJesus ChristshedHispreciousblood'are beingestrangedfromtheChurchand lostforever.Ordinarilynon-Catho- licsdonotandwillnotcometoour Churchestohearourdoctrinesexpounded,norwilltheyvisitapriest tohavetheirdoubtsandprejudices dispelled.Evenwhentheyhear Catholictruthexplainedfromthe pulpittherestillremainsalingering suspicionthattheoldcalumniesread sooftenmusthetrue,sincethey haveneverreadarefutation.How, then,arewegoingtoreachthem?

TheAloyasiiisTruthSociety developmentoftheAloysius isa Club
Presscommittee,whichwasformed byFatherDuarte,asmoderatorof theClub,onSeptember1,eaio,the membersofthecommitteebeing pledged"touseeveryavailable meanstorefutesuchpublishedarticlesas'attackthetruefaithorare subversiveofChristianmorality." WithinafewweeksalteritsestablishmentthePresscommitteestruck itsfirstblowforCatholicUtah.A localbodyofFreethinkersassembled ataFerreranniversarymeeting madeaseriesofvileattacksonthe Church,whichwereprominently'displayedinalocalnewspaperonthe followingmorning.Acompleterefstationofthechargeswasquickly preparedbythepresscommitteeand submittedtotheeditor-in-chiefof thenewspaper,whoacceptedthedocument,butomitteditfromthenext editionofthePaper,statingthatit wouldbebestnotto"Provokecontroversy."Afterashowingofinfluenceanddeterminationonthe PartoftheAloysiusClub,however, thearticlewaspublishedwithlarge displayofheadlinesandasmuch spaceashadbeendevotedtothe vilechargesoftheatheists. This incidentwaswidelycommentedupon bytheCatholicpressofthiscountryandCanada,andinFranceby theParis"Croix."
InthelatterpartoftheyearfatherDuartechangedtheAloysius ClubpresscommitteeintotheAloy- siusTruthSocietyofWashington, withawiderscopeofactivityand anincreasedmembership.FollowingtherevolutioninPortugal,when thecableswerehotwithtreacherous falsehood,thesocietyissuedastatementoftheCatholicside,andon January8hadpublishedinthe "WashingtonHerald,"asaSunday "feature,"thestirringprotest,"To My.Country,"byFatherCabral,the exiledJesuitprovircial.Every.pas- torinWashingtonwasrequestedto announcetheinformationfromthe AltaronSundaymorning,andthe resultwasastonishing.Before12 o'clockthenewsstandswere pletelyoutof"Heralds"andtoob- tainacopyitwasnecessarytogo tothe"Herald"office.Thereverend PresidentoftheAloysiusTruthSoc- ietyhadrequestedthelateRev. FrancisXavierBradytomakethe announcementinSt.Ignatius'church Baltimore,andthatzealouspastor notonlydidso,buthadanumber ofnewsboyssellingthe"Washington Herald,"directlyoutsidethechurch. sothatthemembersofthecongrega- tioncouldconvenientlyobtain a copyofthepaperandreadthecrushingexposureoftheChurch'senemies.
Veryrecentlypublicactiononthe partoftheorganisationwasnecessary,whenanumberofprominent ministers,assembledattheEpiscopal congressinWashington,assailedthe CatholicChurchviolently. The TruthSocietypromptlypublishedin thepaperwhichhadfeaturedtheir attacksacrushingreply,which broughtadelugeofcongratulations fromCatholicsthroughoutWashing- ton.Themembersofthecongress failedtorallyduringtheremainder oftheirsessionsinthecity,and steeredclearofanyadditionalreferencestothetrueChurch.

RecentlywereferredtotheMaine Explosionhereinbriefisthewhole storyanditssequel:-
TheexplosionontheUnitedStates battleshipMaineinHavanaHarbour 15thFebruary,1898,whichresulted inthesinkingofthatvesselandthe lossof266ofhercrew,wasoneof theimmediatecausesoftheSpanish- AmericanWar.TheAmericansde- claredthattheexplosionwasdue toasubmarinemineexteriortothe boat,andallegedthatthemine'was
deliberatelyfiredby'apartisanof Spain.ThisversionoftheoCcal'.. raneesedulouslycirculatedby the AmericanPresswasusedtoraisethe warfeverintheUnitedStatestoa crisis,withtheresultthatwarag- ainstSpainwasdeclaredbyCongress twomonthslater.Thewar,asis wellknownendeddisastroeslyfar Spain,andwhenpeacewassignedat ParisinDecember,Spainhadtocon- senttothelossofthelastvestige ofheroncehugeAmericanColonies aswellasthesurrenderofthePhil- ippines.TheSpanishalwaysmain- tainedthattheexplosiononthe Mainewastheresultofsomeaccident withwhichtheyhadnothingtono. Thirteenyearslateritisdeclared ontheauthorityofGeneralBixby, theChiefoftheUnitedStatesArmy EngineerirgCorpsengagedintherai- singofthesunkenbattleship,that thisviewwascorrect.Hestates, astheresultofanexaminationof thevessel,thattheMainewassuck bytheexplosfonofhermagazines, andthatthiswasnotcausedby'an explosionfromwithout.Ifthis viewisacceptedintheUnitedStates itwillcausesomesearchingof heartsamongthosewhousedthe lossoftheMaineasareasonfor declaringwaronSpain.Noorecan expectthattheUnitedStateswill nowoffertorestoretoSpainhersei- zedColoniesbutatleastanacknowledgmentofherinnocenceofthe dastardlycrimeofwhichshewas accusedmightbeexpected.
