Thereverendpresidentmadethe apostolicworkoftheTruthSociety thesubjectofaringingsermon, whichhedeliveredattheHighMass inSt.Aloysius'ChurchonSunday, JulyI1.Alargecongregationwas present,inspiteoftheintenseheat oftheday.FatherDuartereferred tothelordintheGospelwho,when hisservantsbroughtHimvarious excusesfromtheguestswhomhehad invitedtothebanquet,declaredthat "noneofthesewhohadbeeninvited

shallPartakeofmyfeast."He comparedthiswiththefateofthose whoareinvitednowtobeactivein defendingtheinterestsofJesus Christ,butwhosubmitexcusesof business,pleasureandmoney-mak- ing.

FatherDuarte,saidinpart "WhatarewedoingforCetal?In confirmationwesolemnlypromisedto besoldiersofChrist,andasHissoldierscanwestandidlewhileallthe Powersofdarknessareunitedina terriblecampaignagainstHisChurch -amorepowerful,systematicand treacherouscampaignthansheever sufferedinherpastglorioushistory? "'lakethedailypress.Itisdecidedlyanti-Catholic.Everydayit becomesmoreandmoreevidentthat thegreatnewsagenciesof the worldareinthehandsoftheene- miesoftheChurch.Thatthereis atpresentaninternationalconspira- cy,inwhichnearlyallnewspaperdomisconnected,isalsobecomingdaily moreapparent.AnythingthatserveetoplaceCatholics,their'faith, anntheirpracticeinasinisterlight iseagerlyseizedupon,magnifiedand embellished,whileastudiedsilenceis maintainedwithregardtoeverything thatcouldcommendthemtothe goodoPinionoftheworld.Allthis isintheairwebreathe.Magazines andbooks,almosttheentiredomain ofliterature,scientifictreatisesand evenchildren'sschoolmanualsare Pervadedbythisspiritofhostility Whereveryouturnyouwillfindthe foundationsofourfaithbeingat- tacked.

ATTACKFALSEHOODWHEREVER' FOUND.

"Asaresultofthiscampaign thousandsofsoulsforwhichJesus ChristshedHispreciousblood'are beingestrangedfromtheChurchand lostforever.Ordinarilynon-Catho- licsdonotandwillnotcometoour Churchestohearourdoctrinesexpounded,norwilltheyvisitapriest tohavetheirdoubtsandprejudices dispelled.Evenwhentheyhear Catholictruthexplainedfromthe pulpittherestillremainsalingering suspicionthattheoldcalumniesread sooftenmusthetrue,sincethey haveneverreadarefutation.How, then,arewegoingtoreachthem?

"AssoldiersofChrist'weareconsequentlydefendersofCatholictruth andweshouldattackfalsehoodwhere everfound.Noprintedlieshould everbePermittedtogowithouta printedcorrection.

"Thecirculationandreadingof standardCatholicliteraturemustbe encouragedamongourCatholicpeo- ple. TheCatholicpressmustbe supported,andinthisconnectionI maysaythatthereisnotafiner journalthanTheCatholicStandard andTimes,ofPhiladelphia-aloyal, able,thoroughlyCatholicpaper,whichtheCatholicsofWashington shouldpatronise."

Afteroutliningtheworkwhichthe AloysiusTruthSocietyiscarrying on,andurginguponhishearersthe necessityoftheiraidingsonoblea cause,thespeakercontinued "Theobligationcannotheevaded. Youshoulddreadtheexplanation, whichyouwillbecalleduponto makeiftheDivineJudgeshouldFey toyou'Igaveyoutheweaponsand thestrengthofasoldiertofightfor Myinterests,butyoulaiddownyour armsbeforetheenemyanddidnoth- ingforMycause.'Ratherletusbe faithfulandgeneroustotheinvita- tionwhichisextendedtoco-operate withtheAloysiusTruthSociety,so thatwemaybeamongthose cf whomitiswritten Theyshall shinelikestarsinheavenfor'hav- ingconfessedChristbeforetheworld,HewillconfessusbeforeHisFather foralleternity."

TheAloyasiiisTruthSociety developmentoftheAloysius isa Club

Presscommittee,whichwasformed byFatherDuarte,asmoderatorof theClub,onSeptember1,eaio,the membersofthecommitteebeing pledged"touseeveryavailable meanstorefutesuchpublishedarticlesas'attackthetruefaithorare subversiveofChristianmorality." WithinafewweeksalteritsestablishmentthePresscommitteestruck itsfirstblowforCatholicUtah.A localbodyofFreethinkersassembled ataFerreranniversarymeeting madeaseriesofvileattacksonthe Church,whichwereprominently'displayedinalocalnewspaperonthe followingmorning.Acompleterefstationofthechargeswasquickly preparedbythepresscommitteeand submittedtotheeditor-in-chiefof thenewspaper,whoacceptedthedocument,butomitteditfromthenext editionofthePaper,statingthatit wouldbebestnotto"Provokecontroversy."Afterashowingofinfluenceanddeterminationonthe PartoftheAloysiusClub,however, thearticlewaspublishedwithlarge displayofheadlinesandasmuch spaceashadbeendevotedtothe vilechargesoftheatheists. This incidentwaswidelycommentedupon bytheCatholicpressofthiscountryandCanada,andinFranceby theParis"Croix."

InthelatterpartoftheyearfatherDuartechangedtheAloysius ClubpresscommitteeintotheAloy- siusTruthSocietyofWashington, withawiderscopeofactivityand anincreasedmembership.FollowingtherevolutioninPortugal,when thecableswerehotwithtreacherous falsehood,thesocietyissuedastatementoftheCatholicside,andon January8hadpublishedinthe "WashingtonHerald,"asaSunday "feature,"thestirringprotest,"To My.Country,"byFatherCabral,the exiledJesuitprovircial.Every.pas- torinWashingtonwasrequestedto announcetheinformationfromthe AltaronSundaymorning,andthe resultwasastonishing.Before12 o'clockthenewsstandswere pletelyoutof"Heralds"andtoob- tainacopyitwasnecessarytogo tothe"Herald"office.Thereverend PresidentoftheAloysiusTruthSoc- ietyhadrequestedthelateRev. FrancisXavierBradytomakethe announcementinSt.Ignatius'church Baltimore,andthatzealouspastor notonlydidso,buthadanumber ofnewsboyssellingthe"Washington Herald,"directlyoutsidethechurch. sothatthemembersofthecongrega- tioncouldconvenientlyobtain a copyofthepaperandreadthecrushingexposureoftheChurch'senemies.

Veryrecentlypublicactiononthe partoftheorganisationwasnecessary,whenanumberofprominent ministers,assembledattheEpiscopal congressinWashington,assailedthe CatholicChurchviolently. The TruthSocietypromptlypublishedin thepaperwhichhadfeaturedtheir attacksacrushingreply,which broughtadelugeofcongratulations fromCatholicsthroughoutWashing- ton.Themembersofthecongress failedtorallyduringtheremainder oftheirsessionsinthecity,and steeredclearofanyadditionalreferencestothetrueChurch.

HEREISANINSPIRINGEXAMPLEFOROURSELVES.LIES ANDINSINUATtONSABOUTCATHOLICMATTERSARELET LOOSEINAUSTRALIAPERIODICALLY.LETUS,WITHUNITED EFFORTSETOUTINPURSUIT, RUNTHEMDOWN,ANDHAMMER THEMINTOSMITHEREENS.

TheSinkingoftheMaine

RecentlywereferredtotheMaine Explosionhereinbriefisthewhole storyanditssequel:-

TheexplosionontheUnitedStates battleshipMaineinHavanaHarbour 15thFebruary,1898,whichresulted inthesinkingofthatvesselandthe lossof266ofhercrew,wasoneof theimmediatecausesoftheSpanish- AmericanWar.TheAmericansde- claredthattheexplosionwasdue toasubmarinemineexteriortothe boat,andallegedthatthemine'was

deliberatelyfiredby'apartisanof Spain.ThisversionoftheoCcal'.. raneesedulouslycirculatedby the AmericanPresswasusedtoraisethe warfeverintheUnitedStatestoa crisis,withtheresultthatwarag- ainstSpainwasdeclaredbyCongress twomonthslater.Thewar,asis wellknownendeddisastroeslyfar Spain,andwhenpeacewassignedat ParisinDecember,Spainhadtocon- senttothelossofthelastvestige ofheroncehugeAmericanColonies aswellasthesurrenderofthePhil- ippines.TheSpanishalwaysmain- tainedthattheexplosiononthe Mainewastheresultofsomeaccident withwhichtheyhadnothingtono. Thirteenyearslateritisdeclared ontheauthorityofGeneralBixby, theChiefoftheUnitedStatesArmy EngineerirgCorpsengagedintherai- singofthesunkenbattleship,that thisviewwascorrect.Hestates, astheresultofanexaminationof thevessel,thattheMainewassuck bytheexplosfonofhermagazines, andthatthiswasnotcausedby'an explosionfromwithout.Ifthis viewisacceptedintheUnitedStates itwillcausesomesearchingof heartsamongthosewhousedthe lossoftheMaineasareasonfor declaringwaronSpain.Noorecan expectthattheUnitedStateswill nowoffertorestoretoSpainhersei- zedColoniesbutatleastanacknowledgmentofherinnocenceofthe dastardlycrimeofwhichshewas accusedmightbeexpected.

Therewasastrikingspectacleat Westminster('athedral,when the PapalEnvoytotheCourtof St. James's,hisExcellency.Mgr.Graz& todiBelmonte,celebratedHighMass inthanksgivingfortheblessingscon- ferredupontheEnglishnation,and tobegthecontinuedblessingofGod uponthenewreign.Therepresen- tativeandcrowdedattendancein spiteofinclementweather,wasa signatonceoftheloyaltyofCa- tholicstothethroneandof the warmthofthewelcomeextendedto therepresentativeoftheSovereign Pontiff.Asasymbolofthistwo- foldloyaltytoChurchandState,the PapalFlagandtheUnionJackfloa- tedsidebysideabovetheCathedral. AguardofhonourofhisExcellency wasprovidedbytheWestminster CompanyoftheCatholicBoys'Bri- gade.Agreatcrowdofpeoplehad gatheredabouttheCathedralpre- cinctstowelcomethearrivalofthe PaPalEnvoy,whocamewithhis suiteintworoyalcarriages.Ashis ExcellencyalightedtheBoysofthe Brigadegavethesalute,andloud cheersarosefromtheassembledpeo- ple.

As soon asthe leastrdservetheleastexceptionintrudesthere,itisnolongerdevotion.Trueandsoliddevotion,they isthatdispositionoftheheartby whichwearereadytodoandto suffer,withoutexceptionorreserve, everythingwhichcomesfromGod's goodpleasure,everythingwhichis theWillofGod.Andthisdispositionisthemostexcellentofallthe giftsoftheHolySpirit. Wecannotaskforittoooftenortooearnestlyandwemustneverflatter ourselvesthatwehaveitinitsperfection,becauseitcanalwaysgo onincreasing,eitherinitselforin itseffects.Hence,devotionissolve, thingmostinterior,whichhastodo withtheinmostlifeofthesoul,for itaffectsthatwithinuswhichie mostspiritual,namely,ourunderstandingandourwill.Devotion, consiststhen,neitherinbarrenreasoning,norinimagination,norin anythingsensibleoremotional.We arenotdevoutjustbecauseweare abletospeakwellonspiritualsubjects,norbecausewehavegrandideasorlineimaginationsaboutheavenlythings,norbecausewearesometimessomovedthatweshedtears.

Again,devotionisnotathingthe* passesawayitisacertainalert Promptitudeofthesoultoactwell, whichishabitual,lixed,permanent, whichextendsovereveryinstantof life,andregulatesallourconduct.
