HoweveratGoathreehuge abandonedMonasterieshadenabled theorganisersoftheCongressto overcometoagreatextentthislatterdifficulty.TheIndianEucharisticCongresseshadbornesuchfruit thattheywereonthePointofobtainingpermissionforsolemnperpetualExpositionoftheBlessedSacrament.

Anotherfundamentalprinciplein theSocietyisthenecessityofcompletedeferencetotheclergy.Itis vitalonthegroundofPolicy,and onthegroundofduty.Astopolicy itisquiteclearthatareligiouslay organisationcannotthriveunlessit beabsolutelytrustedbytheclergy. EvenasmallPercentageofcasesof troublewouldheenoughtocheckits life.Itwouldneverdotohavethe parishPriestssaying"Yes,aconferenceisaverygoodthingtohave, ifYouhaveverygoodmenitundoubtedlyaddslifetothecongrega-
tionandhelpsthePriest,butyou sometimeshavetroubletheofficers getswelledheadsandopposeyouin yourownparish,andthenthetroublebegins."Therecannotbeany roomforthat"but."Nosmatter whattheaidgivensbyagoodconferencemightbe,theinjurydoneby abadonewouldoutweighit,even ifthatdifficultyonlycameonceina scoreofparishes.Theclergymust feelthataconferenceisasafe, a comfortable,thingallhelpandno anxiety. Theymustfeelthatits spiritisloyalty,andthatthesmallestfailureinloyaltywillbesummarilyandseverelycheckedbythose inauthorityintheSocietyoutside theparish. Andonthehigher groundofdutythenecessityofloyaltyisclearstill.Laymen,whoare tryingtobecomebetterCatholics,in asocietytheyhavejoinedforthat purpose,willnotopposetheirclericalsuperiors. Thatwouldbe a strangewayofbecomingmoreholy. Casesconceivablymaybeput,extremeandexceptionalones,inwhich itmightPerhapsbecomethedutyof agoodlaymantoopposehispriest. Howeverthatmayheintheoryfcr otherlaymen,itisatleastclear thatnoSt.VincentDePaulman shouldeverbefoundsoexacting. InjoiningtheSocietyliehasentered abodywhosefixedprincipleitisto beloyaltotheuttermost,andasa memberofthatSocietyhecannothe againstthepriestinanyparochialor churchmatter.Itshouldalwaysbe hispride(itistheonlyprideallowabletohim)tohethepriest'smost trustedandreliableparishioner.
Last,andbynomeansleast,one characteristicaboveallothers,marks orshouldmark,thebrotherofthe Society.Hehasjoinedittosanctifyhissoul,andallinitsruleand itsworkingaidsandencourageshim toaimhighinhisspirituallife.He should,therefore,aboveallthings, pressonwardandupwarddailyinhis effortstorealiseinhimselfthespirit oftheGospel.Whenurgedbyhis Priesttoanymoreperfectwayhe hasnoreason'forrefusal;he has madeaProfessionofhisaim at sanctification,hestandscommitted beforehandtoeverythinggoodthat canhereasonablyrecommendedby hisconfessor.ASt.VincentDe Paulbrothermustthereforenotbe behindanyoneinthecongregation. Yet,whererichesandpleasuresare eager13pursuedwithoutanyreferenci toGod,itcannothesaidthatthings areastheyshouldbe.Whenaman, forgetfulofhisCreator,andofGod's purposesincreatinghim,practically liveswithoutworshippingGodand seekingtoobeyHislaw,whatishe, ifnotacreaturefallenfromhishigh estate.makingonlyhimselfandhis ownunspiritualsatisfactionstheend ofexistence? HisLordship,Dr.Pagnani,Bishop ofKandy,hasgonetohisreward. Thisexemplaryprelatewasgreatly esteemee.Hiszealforreligionand hisunostentatiouspiety,duringa longcareerofusefulnessmadehima modelforhisclergyandendeared himtohisflock-R.I.P.Sometwo hundredyearsagotherediedat Kandyintheodourofsanctityan apostolicmanwhosedeedsinday ofbitterpersecutionmerittoberecorded. EmmanueldeSilvaandhissix companionssufferedthelossoftheir property,andwerecondemnedto hardlabourfortherestof their lives.Ladenwithchainstheynad tocarry.thestonesforthebuilding oftheFortatJaffna.Duringthese penallabourstheyweremaltreated andmadetoworklikebeasts of burden. Inthelightofall thathashappenedsincethen,and
especiallyofthe,triumphwhichsince thentemperancehasachieved,it willnotbewithoutinterestorprofitonthisgloriousoccasiontogo backandreviewthepositionwhich temperanceendeavourheldatthat time.Evenacursoryglancewill sufficetoteachsomesalutaryand instructivelessonswhichmayexerciseanimportantbearingonthefutureofTemperanceReform. In thesenowfaroffdaystheglorious workofFatherMatthewhaddwindledalmosttoextinction,leavingbehinditlittlemorethanasadbut hallowed,memoryTheoldguardof FatherMathew'steetotallershad wornhismedalunflinchinglytill death.Oncemorethedemonofintemperance,likeasleepinggiantaroused fromdrunkenslumbers,hadbegun withrenewedvigourtoresumehis workofdeadlydestructionon the nation.Fortunatelyatthetime, thegreatandholyBishop,Doctor Furlong,whowellrememberedFatherMatthew'sworld-famedcrusade, andwhobitterlydeploreditsdecline, steppedintothebreachandsummonedthechildrenofthemenof'98to fightagainstthedemonofdrinkas theirfathershadfoughtinthecause offreedomearsbefore.Thewarnote hesoundedthenhasneversinceceLsedtovibrateintheearsoftheIrish nation,andthe GREATTEMPERANCEREVI-
