HoweveratGoathreehuge abandonedMonasterieshadenabled theorganisersoftheCongressto overcometoagreatextentthislatterdifficulty.TheIndianEucharisticCongresseshadbornesuchfruit thattheywereonthePointofobtainingpermissionforsolemnperpetualExpositionoftheBlessedSacrament.

TheAbbeBallette,Chaplainofthe GrottoatLourdes,spokeoftheEucharisticmiraclesperformedthere, andfinishedbydescribingthecaseof aSpanishwomanfromBarcelona, whohadsufferedfromadistressing intestinalcomplaintforfouryears, andwasconsideredincurable,but who,afterpartakingoftheBlessed Sacramentwascompletelycuredon May3othofthisyear.Heenlargedupontheastonishmentcaused throughouttheworldofscienceby thesemiraculouscuresandsaidthat betweeni9o2and1907overfive hundreddoctorsandscientistshad studiedcasesonthesPotinorder tofindsomeexplanationinaccordancewithmedicalscience,andthat atLourdesCatholicandProtestant doctors,scepticsandfreethinkerswho elbowedeachotherwereallowedto freelyexaminePatientsandtheregisters,butstillremainedperplexed,

Anotherfundamentalprinciplein theSocietyisthenecessityofcompletedeferencetotheclergy.Itis vitalonthegroundofPolicy,and onthegroundofduty.Astopolicy itisquiteclearthatareligiouslay organisationcannotthriveunlessit beabsolutelytrustedbytheclergy. EvenasmallPercentageofcasesof troublewouldheenoughtocheckits life.Itwouldneverdotohavethe parishPriestssaying"Yes,aconferenceisaverygoodthingtohave, ifYouhaveverygoodmenitundoubtedlyaddslifetothecongrega-

tionandhelpsthePriest,butyou sometimeshavetroubletheofficers getswelledheadsandopposeyouin yourownparish,andthenthetroublebegins."Therecannotbeany roomforthat"but."Nosmatter whattheaidgivensbyagoodconferencemightbe,theinjurydoneby abadonewouldoutweighit,even ifthatdifficultyonlycameonceina scoreofparishes.Theclergymust feelthataconferenceisasafe, a comfortable,thingallhelpandno anxiety. Theymustfeelthatits spiritisloyalty,andthatthesmallestfailureinloyaltywillbesummarilyandseverelycheckedbythose inauthorityintheSocietyoutside theparish. Andonthehigher groundofdutythenecessityofloyaltyisclearstill.Laymen,whoare tryingtobecomebetterCatholics,in asocietytheyhavejoinedforthat purpose,willnotopposetheirclericalsuperiors. Thatwouldbe a strangewayofbecomingmoreholy. Casesconceivablymaybeput,extremeandexceptionalones,inwhich itmightPerhapsbecomethedutyof agoodlaymantoopposehispriest. Howeverthatmayheintheoryfcr otherlaymen,itisatleastclear thatnoSt.VincentDePaulman shouldeverbefoundsoexacting. InjoiningtheSocietyliehasentered abodywhosefixedprincipleitisto beloyaltotheuttermost,andasa memberofthatSocietyhecannothe againstthepriestinanyparochialor churchmatter.Itshouldalwaysbe hispride(itistheonlyprideallowabletohim)tohethepriest'smost trustedandreliableparishioner.

Last,andbynomeansleast,one characteristicaboveallothers,marks orshouldmark,thebrotherofthe Society.Hehasjoinedittosanctifyhissoul,andallinitsruleand itsworkingaidsandencourageshim toaimhighinhisspirituallife.He should,therefore,aboveallthings, pressonwardandupwarddailyinhis effortstorealiseinhimselfthespirit oftheGospel.Whenurgedbyhis Priesttoanymoreperfectwayhe hasnoreason'forrefusal;he has madeaProfessionofhisaim at sanctification,hestandscommitted beforehandtoeverythinggoodthat canhereasonablyrecommendedby hisconfessor.ASt.VincentDe Paulbrothermustthereforenotbe behindanyoneinthecongregation. To changeallthis,ortoputitaside, withoureyesopen,andwithadevelopedintelligence,wouldbetorevert toworsethanPagantimes. Yet,whererichesandpleasuresare eager13pursuedwithoutanyreferenci toGod,itcannothesaidthatthings areastheyshouldbe.Whenaman, forgetfulofhisCreator,andofGod's purposesincreatinghim,practically liveswithoutworshippingGodand seekingtoobeyHislaw,whatishe, ifnotacreaturefallenfromhishigh estate.makingonlyhimselfandhis ownunspiritualsatisfactionstheend ofexistence? HasnotOurLordcomeintothe worldtoelIeCttheconversionandifP-, liftingofhumanity,inkeeningwith somarvellousaneventasHisIncarnation? AfterHiscoming,and withthelightofHisDivineteachingshininguponthem,shallmenbe nobetterthantheywerebeforelis coming:

welcomeditsadvent,andmanysacrificedtheirlivesratherthanabandonit.

Whatareproachitwouldbeto miennow-a-days,inreflectingupon thishistoryofthePast,toforsake ordisregardthatall-preciousheavenlyteaching,andalltheblessings thataccompanyit! Yetaspiritof worldlinessandirreligionisspreadingfarandfast. Whatvoiceshallrallythebroken forces,andbringthemagainaround thegloriousstandardofasincere andeffectiveChristianity? Yes,theBishopaltogethertraversed1700miles,andinresponseto hiseloquentappealthepeoplehave subscribednolessthanL3aoo.Everybodywasdelightedtosee the Bishopandnoteventheunpleasant objectofhisvisitdetractedmateriallyfromthewarmthofthewelcome. Alongersta\thanusualwasmade inBeverley,andaffordedthepriest andpeopleanopportunityofshowingtheiraffectionfortheBishop, whichtheygladly'availedthemselves of.Amostartisticaddressfrom thepriestandpeopleofBeverleywas presentedtoHisLordship,byMr.P. HisLordship,Dr.Pagnani,Bishop ofKandy,hasgonetohisreward. Thisexemplaryprelatewasgreatly esteemee.Hiszealforreligionand hisunostentatiouspiety,duringa longcareerofusefulnessmadehima modelforhisclergyandendeared himtohisflock-R.I.P.Sometwo hundredyearsagotherediedat Kandyintheodourofsanctityan apostolicmanwhosedeedsinday ofbitterpersecutionmerittoberecorded. When,afterdispossessingthePortuguese,theDutchbecame'rastersof Ceylon,theytransportedthePortugueseprieststoIndia.Thiswasin i658.AtJaffna.however,confined tohisbedbyinfirmities,FatherCaldeiroremainedbehind.Aplotto rebelagainsttheDutchhavingbeen betrayedandcrushed,theauthorities seizeduponthegoodpriest,who knewnothingofit,andbeheaded himfornotmakingitknown.Proclamationwasthenissuedagainstall priestsandadherentstotheCatholic Faith,andeveryeffortwasmadeto compelthePeopletoadopttheCalvanisticformofreligion.

Amongtheeightpersonswhom VanRheedetained,weretwoTamils, onenamedDonPedro,anathe_therEmmanueldeSilva.Inje)asthe firstofthesehaddeniedthefaith, buthappilytheother,bydint of Perseveringeffortsatpersuasion,and byprayer,hadafteratimebrought himtorepentance.WhenFather Vazarrives:atJaffna,DonPedro threwhimselfatthefeetofthe goodpriest,andwasreconciledto theChurch.Nowcamethehour oftrial.BroughtbeforetheGovernor,VanRheesaidtohimangrily "DenytheCatholicreligion,oryou mustdie."Theconfessorofthe faithreplied 'Die?Yes.Betray myfaith?No"ThentheGovernorsaid "Youngman,don'taou IcowhowImaytortureyoa?"Don l'edroanswered"Hereismybody, strikeyourblowsdonotfrighten me,youcannotsnatchfrommemy faith Thenthesc_iuri Afterhavingborneitforhalfan hour,welteringinhisbloodthe youngmanfainted.VanRheethen orderedhimtohechained,andput inPriSon.Hediedthesameday ChristmasDay,1692.

EmmanueldeSilvaandhissix companionssufferedthelossoftheir property,andwerecondemnedto hardlabourfortherestof their lives.Ladenwithchainstheynad tocarry.thestonesforthebuilding oftheFortatJaffna.Duringthese penallabourstheyweremaltreated andmadetoworklikebeasts of burden. Aftersomemonthsthey werecompletelywornout,anddied intheveryfortwhichwasbeing constructed.

Inthelightofall thathashappenedsincethen,and

especiallyofthe,triumphwhichsince thentemperancehasachieved,it willnotbewithoutinterestorprofitonthisgloriousoccasiontogo backandreviewthepositionwhich temperanceendeavourheldatthat time.Evenacursoryglancewill sufficetoteachsomesalutaryand instructivelessonswhichmayexerciseanimportantbearingonthefutureofTemperanceReform.
