Inwhathasbeenhithertosaid,I haveattemptedtobringhometo youthegreatandcentralfactthat ourreligion-thereligioninstituted byJesusChrist-isadivinelife.It wasthisparticularlifewhichour Lordcamefromheaventogiveus, thatwemighthaveit,asHesaes, "abundantly."Itisthisdivine lifewhichyouandIhavesoto support,tonourishandtostrengthen thatitsdivineenergiesmayPenetrateandpermeatethewholerange ofourthoughtandworkduringour missiontimehereonearth.

THEFOODOFLIFE.

Note,then,comesthequestionof questionsuponwhatfood must thisdivinelifebefedthatitmay notstarvetodeathinus,but,on thecontrary,maygrowinhealth andstrengthyetmoreandmore?

Thereisnokindoflifebut re- quiresforitssupportsomekindof food.Isnottheorganicmar`nedoff fromtheinorganicpreciselybythis thatwhereastheformerneedsfor itshealthandgrowthsonicspecial kindofnutriment,thelatteriscap- ableofnone?Thecrystalgrows fromwithout,theorganismfrom within-notbytheadditionofmaterialwhichitputsonanduses,but be.theabsorptionofmatterwhich itassimilatesandmakesitsvere own.Imightgoontoshowhow life,aswefinditintheascending scaleofbeing,fromtheamoebato humanlife,requiresforitsvigour anddevelopmentitsownparticular billoffare.ButImustpassonto answerthequestionaboutthefood neededforthesupportofthedivine lifeofthesoul.Whatisthebanquetatwhichthisdivineguest is tosit,andtofeedwithappetiteand relish?

AtnotimeinthestoreosHis Christianlifecanmanaffordto,neg- lecthissoul'slife.Tosupportit, nourishit,developandcompleteit, istheworkwithwhichheischarged,themissiontowhichHeiscalled.Hehasnottocastaboutin ordertodiscoveruponwhatitmust hefedthatitmaykeepinhealth, beauty,andstrengthbeforeGod.Has notthedivineHostinvitedusone andalltoHistable.proclaiming "Thebanquetisready."Mostwonderfultonarrate,Helongsmoreferventlytocometousthan'wetogoto Him.DearerfartoHimthanany jewelledtabernaclemadewithhuman handsisthesimPlecasketofachild's pureheartmadebyGodHimself,to beHisdwellingplace.HeseeksonionwithitthroughtheEucharist.

Theserviceinthemonument groundsandtheparadewhichprecededit,wereanunusualinterminglingofthecivic,themilitary,and thereligious.Themonsterparade, whichmovedthroughPennsylvania avenuetoFifteenthstreet,and thencetotheshrineatthefootof theWashingtonmonumentwasan awe-inspiringspectacle.Theobservancewascarriedoutundertheauk t t c l i picesoftheSpanishWarVeterans. Inthecolumnwhichformed at hePeacemonumentwerebesidethe veteransoftwowars-theciviland heSpanish-thousandsof school hildrenandotherthousandsofmen representingthevariousCatholicorganisationsoftheDistrict. MostHolyFather,shesaid,Ihave been36yearsinBasutoland. The firstmissionandthefirstschoolhad thenjustbeenfounded.Therewere veryfewCatholics,andvery few childrenintheschool.Butnow therearemissionseverywhere,and manyflourishingschools.Inthese schoolswehavebeenabletoprepare thousandsofchildren,andevenadults,forbaptism,andfortheirirst Communion.

Again,theHolyFatherexpressed hissatisfaction,saying"BENE, BENE."Youhaveworkedwell, andyouhavesufferedmuchamong thesepaganblacks;Icongratulateyouandblessyou.

QueenElizabethcametothethrone onthedeathofMaryin1;;8,and fouryearslaterbeganthePersecu- tionoftheadherentsoftheancient faith,includingallwhoshouldopenlydisapproveofthenewlyestablishedworship,orwhoshouldcelebrate, orhearotherscelebrateanyPrivate Mass.In1571itwassoughtunder finesandotherpenaltiesnotonly tocomPeleveryonetoassistat Protestantworship,butalsoto4receiveCommunion,accordingtothe newform.Executionsbegan in 1581,andcontinuedduringtherest ofElizabeth'sreign.Catholics,"re- cusants"astheywerecall-d,hedto submittofines,confiscation,imprisonment,exile,torturesand death. Enoughhasbeenquotedfromthe historyoftheProtestantReformation,whichmadesolamentablea changeinreligion.TheAncient faithintheHolyEucharistwaslost. IntheArticlesofReligion,adopted in1;62,we read(Art,xxxi):"Wher,ferethesacrificesofMasses,in thewhichitwascommonlysaidthat thePriestdidofferChristforthe quickandthedead,tohaveremissionofpainorguilt,wereblasphe- mousfables,anddangerousdeceits." Thetreepriesthood,too,waslost. Now,thefactofthematteristhe cheeringwasdonebytheLiberals, theverypartythatareinpowerat thePresenttime-andthatIamet- raidarebringingdisasterontheBritishNation.Theremaybe,and CatholicsamongtheLiberals,es wellasamongtheConservatives,but bythewildeststretchofimagination itisabsurdtoputthisdownto whathecallsRome'sdisloyalty. Further,thisRev.gentlemansays "TheybedbeenasBredbyonesea thority(whatauther:ty71thatthe recentunrestitIndiahadbeenlarg- elytheresultofPapalintrigue." Well,fromthespeechesIreadmade byMr.KeirHardy,M.P.,inIndia, IalwaysunderstoodthatthisLabourmemberwasthecauseoftheIndianunrest-thisisthefirsttimeI havehearditimputedtotheCatho- licChurch.ButtheRev.Jenkins waxeseloquentwhenhetreatsofthe lieTemereDecree,esifitwasa

newandunwarrantabledecree,whereasitwaspromulgatedthreeyears ago,andafterallisaPurelyCath- olicmatter,anddoesnotconcern Protestantsatall;butthisiswhat theRev.Jenkinssays"Theprinci- palfeatureoftheDecree.was,inhis opinion,thearroganceofRome,in daringtoassertinaProtestant country,whereshewasinahope- lessminority,thatamarriagecelel bratedwithouttheassistanceofa RomanPriestwasnotbinding,&c., &c.Thisfalsestatementshowsthat Mr.Jenkinsdoesnotunderstand-evenifhehasread-the"NeTonere" decree.

IsitnottruethataProtestant marriageisonlybindingduringthe goodwillofeachofthecontracting parties,anduntilsuchtimeasit maybedissolvedbyaDecreeNisi theDivorceCourt? Inthatcasewhatisallthefuss about,overtheNeTemeredecree. St.Monica CardinalNewmanwheninIreland toendeavourtofoundaCatholicUniversity,preachedthefirstsermonin thethennewCatholicUniversity Church,Stephen'sGreen,Dublin,cn theFeastofSt.Monica,fifty-five yearsago.HesaidThisdaywe celebrateoneofthemostremarkable feastsinthecalendar.Wecommemorateasaintwhogainedtheheavenlycrownbyprayersandtears,ly sleeplessnightsandwearywanderings,butnotintheadministration ofanyhighofficeintheChurch,Lot inthefulfilmentofsomegreatresolutionorspecialcounsel,notas ateacher,evangelist,reformer,or chamPionofthefaithnotasabishopoftheflock,ortemporalgovernor.notbyeloquence,bywisdomor bycontroversialsuccess;notinthe historyofanyothersaintwhomwe invokeinthecircleoftheyear:but asamotherseekingandgainingby' herpenancestheconversionofher son.Itwasfornoordinaryson thatsheprayed,anditwasnoordinarysupplicationbywhichshegainedhim.Whenaholy!ransawits vehemenceereitwassuccessful,he saidtoher,"Goinpeacetheson ofsuchprayerscannotperish."The predictionwasfulfilledbeyondits letter;notonlywasthatyoungman converted,butafterhisconversionhe becameaSaint,notonlyasaint, butadoctoralso,andinstructed manyuntojustice.St.Augustine wasthesonforwhomsheprayed andifhehasbeenaluminaryfor allagesoftheChurchsince,many thanksdoweowetohismother,St Monica,who,havingbornehimin theflesh,travailedforhiminthe spirit.TheChurch,inherchoiceof agospelforthisfeast,haslikened St.Monicatothedesolatewidow whomOurLordmetatthegatesof thecityasshewasgoingforthto burythecorpseofheronlyson.He sawher,andsaid"Weepnot,"and Hetouchedthebier,andthedead rose.St.Monicaaskedandobtainedamorenoblemiracle.Manya motherwhoisanxiousto-dayfor herson'sbodily.welfareneglectsthe soulsodidnotthissaintoftoday;hersonmightbeaccomrlished, eloquent,able,anddistinguished.All thiswasnothingtoherwhile he wasdeadinGod'ssight,whilehe wastheslaveofsin,whilehewas thepreyofheresyshedesiredhis truelife.Sheweariedheavenwith prayer,andworeherselfoutwith praying.Shedidnotatonceprevail.Helefthishomehewascarriedforwardbyhisfourbearers,ignorance,pride,appetiteandamaition.Hewascarriedoutinaforeigncountry;hecrossedoverfrom AfricatoItaly.Shefollowedhim shefollowedthecorpse,thechief,Thth onlymournershewentwherehe wentfromcitytocity.Itwasnothingtohertoleaveherdearhome, andhernativesoilshehadco countrybelow;hersolerest,her solerepose,hernuncdimittis.was hisnewbirth.Sowhileshestill walkedforthindeepanguishandis-
