TheDarkCaverns

Belowadepthofsome1200feet norayoflightpenetratestheocean. Fivehundredandninety-twohomelessboys,shelteredandcaredfor, Clothed,shodandfed,rescuedfrom evilinfluencesandsavedforState andChurchwithinoneyear-thisis therecordofSanFrancisco'sfamousCatholicinstitution,theYouths' Directory,asrevealedintheannual reportjustissued.Thisisaremarkableshowingbuttherealsignificanceofitisnotgraspeduntil werealisethemannerinwhichso greataworkisaccomplished.WhollywithoutStateorCityaidand administerednotwithalargeand expensivecorpsofprofessionalhelpers,butwiththeutmostsimplicity andeconomy,theYouth'sDirectory carriesonitsinvaluableworkina mannerthatisadmirablebeyond words.TheSt.Joseph'sUnionan armyofCatholics(almostallwomen),whosenamesarenotadvertised,butwhosedevotionisuntiring, isthebackboneofthework.Rev. Underhiscarefuldirectiontheforce ofthisarmyoftrueChristiandevoteesisconcentratedandutilised, withremarkableresults.Constant endeavour,tirelesszealandunflaggingfidelityarethesecretsofthe Directory'ssuccess.

Itisoftencomplained(andtoo oftenjustlyso)thattheCatholic laitycomparessadlywithnon-Catholicswhenitcomestoactiveinterestincharitableworks.Butwhere, wewouldask,inanycityorState orinanydenomination,canbe foundsuchabodyastheSt.JosePh'sUnion? Toomuchhonour cannotbepaidthenobleChristians ofthatorganisationwhoarespendingthemselvesforthesakeof Christ'spoorchildren.

AnnualreportoftheYouth'sDirectoryfortheyearendingMarch1, 1911. Theannualreportofthisorany otherinstitution,conductedinthe interestofthePublic,shouldbea photographofallthetransactions ofthreehundredandsixty-fivedays SuchaPictureinallitsdetailof lightandshade,wouldofcoursebe, bothinterestingandinstructive;but howmanyofourfriendsandpatronscouldsparetimetopauseoverandstudyitinthisbusyageof aviationandelectricityI Itisnotmyintention,therefore, tooccupytoomuchtimewithadetailedandelaboratereport.Howeverpleasantsuchataskmaybeto meitcanheofnomaterialadvantagetothegeneralreader.For thisreasonIshallcontentmyself withthepresentation,inthisreport, offactsandfigures.

Whentothisnumberareaddedthe eighty-eightboysremaininginthe Homeatthecloseofthelastfiscal year.youwillperceivethatduring thelasttwelvemonthstheburden ofcaringandprovidingforfivehundredandninety-twoboysdevolved uporoursocietyfortheprotection ofchildrenwhoarenoteligibleto StateorCountyaid.

Inmostinstancesthesechildren cametousdestituteinthefullsense oftheword,sothattheDirectory wasobligedtofurnishnotonlyfood andshelterbutalsoshoesandclothing.Itmaybewelltostatehere thatallthosewhoobtainadmission totheHomeareabsolutelyhomelessandworthycases.Onapplica- tionforadmissionweadin'tall, andsubsequentlymakeourselvesfa-

miliarwiththeirrealconditionssotherecanbenoimposition. Thechildrenbetweentheagesof sevenandfourteenyearswhoare orphans,halforwhole,andentitled toStateaid,wesendtoSt.Vincent'sAsylumwheretheyreceiveexcellentcareandtraining.Children ofthesamecategoryunderseven yearsofagewetransfertoSilver TerraceInfantAsylum,SouthSan Francisco,inchargeoftheSisters ofCharity.

Therewasalargecongregation, chieflycomposedofIrishresidentsin Birmingham,inSt.Michael'sChurch MoorStreet,Birmingham,atthe Gaelicserviceincelebrationofthe FeastofSt.Patrick,apostleofIreland.St.Michael'shasalwaysbeen acentreforgatheringsofthiskind, andonthisoccasionthefestivalwas observedwithmorethanusualsolemnity.Thedevotions,insofaras theRitualpermitted,wereconductedinIrishbytheVeryRev.BernardMangan,C.P.,andtheresponses weregiveninthesametongueby themembersofthecongregation. mnsinpraiseoftheSaintwere wellrenderedbytheChoir,Mr. WilliamKey-tepresidingattheor-

Therev.Father,havingsketched thehistoryofSt.Patrick'slabours andtheconversionofIrelandfrom DruidismtoChristianityinthefifth century,paidaneloquenttributeto thefidelitywithwhichhiscountrymenadheredtothefaithoftheir fathershowthe\werevoted in everylandfortheirdevotion to theirPastorsandforthegenerous mannerinwhich(veryoftenoutof scantymeans)theycontributedto thebuildingandupkeepoftheir Churches,thetrialsandviscissitudesoffifteencenturieshadnot weakenedtheirsenseofreligious dutyorfealtytothelandoftheir birth.Evidenceofthiswasgiven bytheenthusiasticmannerinwhich thefestivalofSt.Patrickwaskept ineverycountryinwhichtheIrish racehadfoundahome,andBirminghamhadprovednoexceptionto thisrule.Theperpetuity,power, andinfluenceoftheIrishpeople couldnothetracedtothepossession ofwealthbutrathertothehigh moralandreligiousprincipleswhich governedtheirlives.Theywerea braveandhighlyirtellectualrace, andmanyofthem,notwithstanding thedisadvantagesunderwhichthey laboured,hadattainedtohighand distinguishedpositionsbothathome andinforeignlands.Theirmartial spiritwasattestedonmanyabattlefieldinthedomainofscience, literature,andarttheyhadhelda prominentandhonouredplaceand nowthattheyhadtheprivilegeofa Universitytowhichtheycouldresortwithasafeconscience,abetterandabrighterfuturelaybefore them.Theeffortswhichwerebeingmadetopreservethelanguage inwhichSt.Patrickpreachedwere attendedwithalargemeasureof success,aswasevidencedin the Churchthatevening.Betterthan alltheirotl.ernobletraitswasthe preserving,self-sacrificing,wholeheartedmannerinwhichtheIrish peopleimitatedSt.Patrickinthe supernaturallifeofpenanceandpra- yer,makingthetemporalalways subservienttothespiritual,and bearingallthingsinpatienceandin unionwiththewillofGod. OnJuly30th,1905,hecelebratedhis firstMass"sincethen,hespends hislifePreachingindistantpartsof thecountrythatCatholicfaith whichformerly,heheldinhorror, whichnowmakeshimthehappiest mar.inallNorway."Itisnotoutsidethelimitsofpossibilitythata memberofour"Paganassociation" friend'scongregationmaysomeday arriveatthesameconclusionconcerninghissectasdidMr.rowFather,EngelsenofChristiania.Was itnotSamuelLaingwhowarned ministersofthedangersofmisrepre- sentation,as,inthelong-run,they werecertaintobefoundout?

OnFridaytheFeastofSt.Patrick,thefaithfulattendedMassin honourofIreland'sApostle,where atallPossible,andastheschools hadaholiday,thechildrenmusterinfullstrength.IntheChurch speciallydedicatedtotheSaint, HighMasswascelebratedandpane- gyricspreachedbothonFridayand bunday.AtthePro-Cathedralon Sundayafternoontherewasasplen- diddemonstrationinthecauseof TotalAbstinence,over1,00opeople assembling,fromallPartsofthe city,theLocheeBranchoftheLeagueoftheCrossmusteringsome hundreds. FatherAugustine,O.S. F.C.,ofDublinaddressedthegreat gatheringontheMissionofFather Matthew,andstirredtheaudienceto greatenthusiasmwithhiswordsof burningzealanddeepearnestness. Thesingingofthehymnsbythevast throngwassoul-stirringintheextreme. TheKinnairdHallmeetingofDundeeCatholics,wasoneofthelarg- estandmostenthusiasticheldfora numberofyears.BishopMacFar-lanepresidedoverthemagnificent gathering,andwasaccompaniedto thePlatformbytheclergyofthe cityanddistrict,anddelegatesfrom allteligiousassociationsinthediocese.FatherAugustinewasagain the.orator,andkepthisaudience spell-houndontheeververdant themeof"FaithandFatherland." TheeloquentCapuchinentrancedhis audiencewithhispatrioticaddress, andthewhole m1%*w>sthrilled byhisfervidandmasterlytreatment ofthesubject.Asplendidmusical programmewasprovided,andaspe- cialfeaturewastheexquisiterenderingofmusicalselectionsbyachoir

ofnearly2u0children.Thegreat demonstrationwasbroughttoa close,bythewholeaudiencesinging "FaithofOurFathers."

ST.PATRICK'SANNIVERSARY. IRISHSERVICEINGLASGOW.

Itwasmosthearteningtobehold themannerinwhichtheGaelsof GlasgowanddistricttroopedtoSt. Andrew'sCathedral,todohonour toSt.Patrick,throughthemedium ofthelanguageinwhichSt.PatricktaughttheFaithtothepeople ofIreland,andthroughwhichmedjinnitisPerhaps,nottooPresumptuoustothinkthathewouldmost desiretobehonouredbyhisIrish children,innomatterwhatpartof theworldtheyhavebeendestinedto havetheirlotscast.

THESERVICE.

TheservicewasonthelinesofPreviousyears.FatherWhiteofSt. John's,recitedtheRosaryinIrish, theresponsesbeinggivenfervently inthesametonguebythecongregation,andinthisconnectionitisto benotedthat,forthefirsttimethe altarboyswereIrish-speaking,the mannerinwhichtheygavetheresponsesbeingquiteedifying,and shouldcertainlyhaveprovedinstructivetoafewwhoseemedtohave losttheirtonguesforthetimebeing.FollowingtheRosary, the HymntoSt.Brigidwassungbythe choir,andafterwardscamethesermonbyFatherBarry.Hegavehis panegyricontheIrishNationalAp- istleinmosteloquentandimpress- ivelanguage-somuchsoindeedthat eventhosewhounderstoodlittleor noIrishfeltthemeaningofhis words.Hedealtparticularlywith themagnificentmannerinwhichthe Irishpeople,infaceofdifficulties andpersecutionsalmostinconceivable,hadretainedthefaithtaught thembySt.Patrick,andspreadit toeveryendoftheearth. Then therewassungtheHymntoSt. Patrick,whichwasfollowedbythe Benedictionservice,atwhichthecelebrantwastheVeryRev.Canon M'Carthv,andattheclose"CreideamhAthara"wassungbythechoir. ThechoirwasundertheableconductorshipofProinsiasMacConmidhe,andtheorganaccompaniments wereplayedinamostcapablemannerbyMissWoodnutt.

WhatisaBigot?

Bigotryisanincapacitytoconceiveseriouslythealternativetoa proposition(writestheingenious Mr.G.K.Chesterton).Ithasnothingwhatevertodowithbeliefin thepropositionitself.Amanmay besureenoughofsomethingtobe burnedforitortomakewaronthe world,andyetbenoinchnearerto beingabigot.Heisonlyabigot ifhecannotunderstandthathis dogmaisadogma,evenifitistrue. Persecutionmaybeimmoral,butis notnecessarilyirrationaltheprosecutormaycomprehendwithhisintellecttheerrorsthathedrives forthwithhisspear.Itisnotbig- oted,forinstance,totreattheKoranassupernatural.Butitisbig- otedtotreattheKoranasnatural asobvioustoanybodyandcommon toeverybody.Itisnotbigotedfor aChristiantoregardChinamenas heathens.ItisratherwhenheinsistsonregardingthemasChristiansthathisbigotrybegins. Oneofthefashionableformsif bigotryexhibitsitselfinthediscoveryoffantasticandtrivialexplana- tionsofthingsthatneednoexpla- nation.Weareinthiscloudlandof Prejudice(forexample)whenwesay thatamanbecomesanatheistbecausehewantstogo-onthespree orthatamanbecomesaRoman Catholicbecausethepriestshave trappedhimorthatamanbecomesaSocialistbecauseheenvies therich.Foralltheserandomand remoteexplanationsshowthatwe haveneverseen,likeacleardia gram,therealexplanationthat Atheism,Catholicism,andSocialism areallquiteplausiblephilosophies. Amandoesnotneedtobedriven, ortrappedorhiltedintothem

convertedto

causeamancanbe them.

Again,itisnotimpossible(though itisnowrare),foranintelligent mantofeelcertainthatIrishHome Rulewouldbedisastrous.Butitis impossibleforanintelligentmanto maintainseriouslythatthedesire foritwasimposedupontheIrish by'agitators.'Anintelligentman neednotgratifytheIrishnational sentimentwouldexist,orheisnot anintelligentmanatall.

Trueliberality,inshort,consists, ofbeingabletoimaginetheenemy. Thefreemanisnothewhothinks allopinionsequallytrueorfalse; thatisnotfreedom,butfeeble-mindedness.Thefreemanishe,who seestheerrorsasclearlyashesees thetruth.

Themoresolidlyconvincedaman reallyis,thelesshewillusephraseslike`NoenlightenedPersoncan reallyhold-'or'IcannotunderstandhowMr.Jonescanpossibly Maintain-'followedbysomevet.. old,mild,anddefensibleopinion.A progressivepersonmayholdanythinghelikes.Idounderstand quitewellhowMr.Jonesmaintains thosemaniacalopinionswhichhe doesmaintain.Ifamansincerely believesthathehasthemapofthe maze,itmustshowthewrongpaths justasmuchastheright. He shouldheabletoimaginethewhole planofanerrorthecompletelogic ofafallacy.Hemustbeableto THINKitifhedoesnotbelieveit.. Itisadmittedevenindictionaries, thatanexampleassistsadefinition. Itakeaninstanceoftheerrorof bigotryoutofmyownbiography,so tospeak.Nothingismoremarked instrangeepochofoursthanthe combinationofanexquisitetactand asyraPathyinthingsoftasteand artisticstyle,withanalmostbrutal sturidityinthethingsofabstract thought.Therearenogreatfight- ingphilosophersto-day;becausewe careonlyabouttastes.Aprincipal criticonthe"NewAge,"whoreviewsbooksoverthesignatureof 'JacobTonson,'whichcovers(Ibelieve)theidentityofoneofourablestyoungerwriters,madearemark aboutmealittlewhileagowhich amusedmeverymuch.Aftersaying manythingsmuchtoocomplimentarybutmarvellouslysympatheticand offeringmanycriticismswhichwere reallydelicateandtrue,heendedup (asfarasIreinember)withthese astoundingwords 'ButInever canreallyfeelamantobemyin- tellectualequalwhobelievesinany dogma.'Itwaslikeseeingafine alpineclimberfallfivehundredfeet intothemud.

Forthislastsentenceistheold, innocent,andstalethingcalledBig- otryitisthefailureofthemind, toimagineanyothermind.The tirhaPPyMr.Tonsonisamongthe Poorestofthechildrenofmenhe hasonlaoneuniverse.Everyone,of course,mustseeonecosmosasthe truecosmosbutMr.Tonsoncannot seeanyothercosmosevenasa hypothesis.

TheMostRev.Dr.Delaney,ArchbishopofHobart,inaniuterviewto arepresentativeoftheTasmanian "DailyPost"gavethefollowinginterestingaccountofhisexperiences, andobservationsduringhisrecent visittoWestAustralia.

"AsyouareProbablyaware,"he said,"IleftHobartbytheR.M.S. OrsovaonMarch4,withCardinal Moran,ArchbishopRedwood,and BishopGallagher.Ourobject in visitingPerthwastotakepartiu theConsecrationofDr.ChineasBishopofPerth.TheCardinalwasto betheConsecratorandtheArchbishopandmyselfco-consecrators.The formerBishopofPerth,Dr.Gibney, isamanof75yearsofage,and hislifeinWesternAustraliaasa missionaryPriestandasabishopof 20yearsstandinghasbeenastrenuousone.Some13yearsagohe wenthastilynorthtothesettlement .49fortheblacksatBeagleBay,which hadbeensecuredfromtheGovernmentandcommittedtothecareof theTrappistFathersfromEurope, wholookedaftertheaboriginals. Thesefathers,afterawhile,grew despondentoftheresultsoftheir mission,andwentawayandBishop Gibneyinordertosavethesettlement,wentuptolookafterthe blacks.Hestayedthereforover twomonths,anditmaywellbeim-

soultoourIsland,althoughshe.s evidentlyagreatfavourite,andis workinghardamongthepeopleof WesternAustralia.ItseemsaPleasantfacttome,atallevents,that whattheLadyEdelinesaysofher attachmenttoTasmaniaisjust whatIheardfromLadyGormanstonthreeyearsagowhenIvisited heratGormanstonCastle. Both theseladiesseemedtotakeitasa matterofcoursethatanybodywho hasspentanytimeinTasmaniacannotfailtoretainthemostloving memoriesofthePeopleaswellas pleasant-recollectionsofthecharms oftheIslanditself.

'IIwasable,"observedHisGrace, "toavailmyselfoftheopportunity ofsayingsomethingaboutTasmania'spositionwhenthe WesternAustralianParliamentary representativescomplainedthattheinterestsoftheStatewerenotbeing sufficientlyattendedtobythelarge sisterStates. Itoldthemthat theycouldbesureofhavingTasmania'ssympathy,asweourselves hadsomeseriousapprehensionsof similarneglect.

Inthemopenvice andlicentiousnessarepalliated,and evenjustified.Thereisnopossible excuseforthepublicationandbroadcastcirculationofsuchbooks.They arenotreprintsofclassicalworks, hutjustimpurenovelsof,inmany cases,nospecialliterarymerit.Even iftheywereclassics,theywouldnot befitreadingforjuvenileandimmaturereadersofeithersex,and shouldnotbepubliclyexposedfor sale.Inseveralinstancessuccessfulprosecutionshavebeeninstituted bythepolice,andtheworstofthese hooksarenowwithdrawnfromopen sale. Butstillthereisalarge massofperniciousliterature,especiallynovelsandperiodicals,in circulation,andanappealismade toparents,schoolmasters,andallto whomthetrainingofyounggirls, andboysisentrustedtodotheir utmosttopreventthecirculationof suchbooks.InIrelandtheCatholicBishopshaveforyearsprotested againstthesaleofimmoralliterature,which,itmustbesaid,isalmostexclusivelyimportedfromEnglandandScotland.

Thosewhoareacquaintedwiththe highaimsandthegoodworkofthe St.VincentDePaulSocietywillbe pleasedtohearthatBrancheswill soonbeestablishedinPerthandthe principalcentresofthisDiocese. Andwefeelassuredthat,whenthe Societyisinfullworkingorder,it willgaintheesteem,thepatronage, andthepracticalassistanceofall truesocialworkers.

ThemembersoftheSocietyunite togetherforthespiritualandtemporalwelfareofthepoor;thisis trulyanobleaim,andthosewho labourforthisenddeserveourbest consideration,ourdeepsympathy, andourloyalsupport.

Veryfewwouldeverrefusetocontributetheirshareinassistingthe deservingPoorthereisinthehumanheartamercifulandacompassionatechord,thatrespondstothe touchofanappealforgenuinepoverty.

Butweareoftendeceivedundeservingandmostundesirablecases makeittheirbusinesstotradeon thegenerosityofothers,peoplehowevercharitablydisposedthey marbe-whentheyfindoutgradual],thattheobjectsoftheirintended charityarenotgenuine,declarewar onallbeggars,andresolvetoturn adeafearinfuturetoallappeals. Andtheresultisthatthereally deservingpoor,suffer,andaredenied ahelpinghand,owingtotheunscrupulousmethodsofthosewho livebyraisingmoneyunderfalse pretences.

Itisunnecessarytostatethatour Australianpeoplearebothcharitableandgenerousthereisnocountryintheworldwhereagoodcause getsabetterhearingoramoreliberalassistance.Butforthatvery reasonourpeoplecannotbearto behood-winkedintogivingmoneyto thosewhowillneverwork,never honestlyearnaPenny,solongas theycanappealunderthecloakand inthenameofcharitytotheir unsuspectingbrethren.

Needless,tosay,theMembers, throughtheirsystemoforganisation oftenfindoutmostdeservingcases, thatotherwisewouldneverhave comeunderthenoticeofthecharitablydisposed.Thehonestpoor, asaruleareofratherretiringdispositions,theyareslowinasking forassistance,andhencetheyoften bearinsilencethe"slingsandarrowsofoutrageousfortune."

TheHolyScripturepronouncesas blessed"themanthatunderstandeth concerningthepoorandtheneedy, anddeclaresthattheLordwilldeliverhimintheevilday." We havethepooramongstus;wehave also,notonlythewell-to-doclass, butthosewhoareblessedwitha morethanordinaryshareofthis world'sgoods. ThefeelingsbetweenPriestsand peoplewherebotharewhatthey oughttobearethefinestfeelingson earthandthesesamefeelingshave noblyandtrulyassertedthemselves, inthisouradoptedcountry. FatherLubycarriedoutallthose greatworkswiththegeneroushelp ofadevotedpeople.InnoPartof theArchdiocesecouldtherehefound amorewarm-heartedandgenerous PeoplethanthoseoftheBrunswick parish,whosoreadilyandsocheerfullyco-operatedwiththeirpastorin everygoodwork. Thebeautiful Church-schoolerectedatWestBrunswickwasanotherproofofFather Luby'spastoralsolicitudeforthe welfareoftheflock,oldandyoung. Thatbuildinghadbeenbuiltona linesite,andwouldmeettherequirementsofthePeopleformar.v yearstocome.Thoseworkswere carriedoutatgreatexpense,and musthavecostatleastathousand Poundsayear,foreveryyearthat FatherLubylabouredintheparish.
