SomeofthePriestswho hadwatchedtheProgressofhismissionwork,accusedhimtohissuperiorsofundueleniencyandkindnesstotheheretics.Theysaid "Iledoesmoreharminasingle daythanwecanundoinamonth. ButFranciswouldnotallowthese criticismstochangehisspiritor mannerintheleastdegree. And heansweredthemwiththesame kindnesswithwhichhehadaddressedProtestants "Ihaveneverallowedmyselfts givewaytoinvectiveorreproach, withoutrepentingofit.,andifI havethehappinessofreclaimingheretics,ithasbeenbygentleness. Loveisastrongerpoweroversouls; Idonotonlysaythanseverity, butthenevenanyreasoning."

mosteminentpreachersofthedioceseweredeputedtoassisthimin theworkofteachingbutunfortunately-theywerenottrainedinthe non-controversialmethodsofSt. Francis,andinsomeinstancesthey didnotalittletoundohiswork. Therewasone,afamousCapuchin preacher,PereEspritDeBeaunehe undertooktogiveaseriesoflecturesonPointsofcontroversy,but unfortunatelyitwasdoneinacontentious,rancorousspiritthatexasperatedtheCalviniststosuchadegreethatthecrowdpubliclyassailed him.FrancisdeSales,hearingthe tumult,rantothepublicsquare, wherehefoundthePoorCapuchin surroundedbyafranticmobofmen women,andchildren,whowereminglingwithblows,criesandimprecations.Bythedignityofhispresence,thesoundofhisvoice,and thelovingsweetnessofhispersuasion,hesucceededinallayingthe storm.MadameDeVallon,whowas presentontheoccasion,declaredit wasthemeeknessandthegentleness ofFrancisthatalonecalmedthe fierceangerofthelawlessmob. ItwasabitterlessontotheCapuchinandtoallotherPreachers. Theywere,howeververyslowto discardtheiroldmethodsofattack, andtoadopttheexpositorymethods ofFrancis. Whenone'sthoughts andlanguagehaverunincertain channelsforyears,itiswell-nighirepossibletoadoptothermethodsof Presentation. HisNephewCharlesAugustusde Sales,speakingofhisuncleatthis time.says Heneveralienatesany onebyharshorhitterways,saying, 'ITISNOTTHELORD'SWAY.'He assertedthatitwasanincontestabletruththatmuchmorewasobtainedbylovethanbyrigour,and that,heneveremployedreproaches orinvectiveswithoutrepentingofit afterwards."

Amissionarycampaignthatachievedsuchwonderfulresultsinso shortatime,isworthyofthesloe eststudy.Hiswasacampaignof preaching. Hegatheredcrowds whereverhecould,ontheroadside,

Numerousattemptsweremadeby theCalvinistsofGenevatolurehim intocontroversy Hereadilysaw throughtheirdesignsandstoutly refused.Hesufferedpatientlyall manneroffoulaspersionsonhis charactersayingthathislifewasan openhook,andspokefrankleand candidlyforitself.Onetime,however,hedidacceptachallengeof theGenevaConferencetomeettheir ablestministersinanopendebate. Amonghismethodsofawakening interestinCatholicteachingwas thepublicdialogue.ItwasarrangedthatheandBernard,hisyoungestbrother,shouldfirstengagein it.Bernardplayedthepart of "thedevil'sadvocate,"puttingin allthestereotypedCalvinisticobjectionsinpublictoFrancis,while Franciswithhisreadyspeechand hiscleargraspofCatholictruth, broughtouttheteachingofthe Churchinallitsattractiveness.This methodattractedgreatcrowdsand developedawonderfuldegreeofinterestinreligiousmatters. Thenumerousaccessionstothe Churchsomultipliedtheworkthat itbecameimperativeonthepart ofSt.Francistosecurehelpers.He appealedtotheBishop,andthe

AManchesterphysician,named Braid,whoflourishedaboutthemiddleofthelastcentury,successfully challengedthe'vitalfluid'theoryof Mesmerbutinsistedthatto'suggestion'advocatedbyFeria,itisnecessarytoaddfatigueofthebrain. Frenchscientistshavedevoted muchstudytothisquestionofhypnotism,butaredividedintotwo schools,theschoolof-Paris,andthat ofNancy;bothofcourseadmitting thewondersof.lipnotistubutdifferingastotheexplanationof the Phenomenaspringfromsuggestion. Thefirsttocombattheopinion, wasaPortuguesecleric,theAbbe Feria,anamescarcelyknowninthe historyofhypnotism.TheAbbe badbeenemiesionereinIndiaand hadstudiedtheBrahminicalmethods,fromwhichhewasledtobold thatnomysteriousfluidpassedin theprocessofhypnotism.Hisview however,didnotthenprevailover theauthorityoftheschoolofMesmer.Itmaybeofinteresttoremarkthatthe'animalmagnetism' theorydidnotoriginatewithMesmer,but-wasknowneveninthedays ofPliny.

Dr.Lapponi(anEminentItalian DoctorwhowasPhysiciantothe lateLeoXIII),isinPerfectaccord withthislatterview.Hence he affirmsthatnohealthypersoncanhe hypnotised.Hewilladmitindeed thatrobustpeoplemaybe,butreiteratesthatwhenbrainandnerve centersareinPerfectconditionhypnosisisirn'possible.Hefurtherdeclaresthatashypnotizablepersons becomemoresusceptibleaftereach experimentitnecessarilyfollowsthat eachoperationleavesthesubject's brainandnervesysteminworse conditionthantheywerebefore. Furtherheholdsthatrepeatedhypnosisleadstohysteriaorevento worseconditions andlastly,be says,asitisgenerallysaid,hystericalpersonsmakethebestsubjects forthehypnotist. "Ifthesestatementsaretruethey arequiteimportantespeciallyin viewoftheallegedrelationshipbetweenhypnotis,andcertainformsof cult.

"Hedoesnotcondemnhypnotism absolutely.Indeed,heclaimsitisa quitenaturalprocess,explainableby naturallaws. Sociallyhypnotismisamenace. Amissionforthechildrenofthe cityofBrisbaneandsuburbshasbeen conductedduringthelastweekin St.Stephen'sCathedralbytheRedemptoristmissioners,saysthe 'SydneyFreeman,'March30th.The largeCathedralhasbeencrowdedby thelittleonesatallthemissionexercises,andthesceneswitnessed gaveevidenceofthepietyandfervourofparentsinseeingthoseundertheirchargeavailedthemselves oftheadvantagesofthemlission. Closeonthreethousandchildrenattendedtheexercises,andover a. thousandchildrenapproachedHoly CommuniononSunday.

AYensailaccident,whichnearly provedfataloccurredontheCollie NarroginRailwayabout5miles fromCollieonlastSaturdayweep. .AtrainfromNarroginranintoa railwaytricycle,theoccupantof whichwasMr.T.Sedwith,whoisa permanentsupervisoronthelinebetweenCollieandDarkan.Onroundingacurvethetrainovertookthe tricycle,theimpactcausingthetricyclewithitsoccupanttobedrivenoverahank.Mr.Sedwithsescapewasalmostmiraculous. He, howeverreceivedseriousinjuriesto shoulder,head,andoneofhisfeet. HewasremovedtotheCollieHospitalandasaresultofhisinjuries wasinacriticalconditionforsome daus.hutthankstohissplendid Phsif hebidsfairtospendsome tin)stillin"thelandoftheliving."

Forsomeunaccountablereason, thetradeprospectsofGreenbushes, seemverygloomyatthepresent time.Thisisallthemoreremarkableastherearealargenumberof menengagedonminingpursuits,and asthepriceoftinmaintainsabnormallyhigh,theTintieldsshouldbe reasonablyexpectedtobebooming ratherthanslumping.Itseems, however,thattheonlydevelopment whichislikelytogivetheTinfields ahoistalor.ginthedirectionof prosperityisthepermanentdevelopmentofoneofthenumerouslodes whichaboundintheGreenbushes areaandwhichshouldsowellrepay exploitationonanextendedscale.

FatherBernardEmanuelMartinez washorninValentia,Spain,onNew Years'night,at12o'clock.Heusedtosay"theycouldnever tell whatyearIwasborninforone yearwasgoingout,andtheother comingin,asIsawthelight,and thenitwasonlythelightbfacandle."FatherMartinezcame to W.A.withBishopSalvadoin1853, asanecclesiasticalstudent,andresidedatSuhiacointheMonasteryrowtheGirls'Orphanage,-wherehe receivedthereligioushabitin1855 madehisreligioosvowsin1856,and wasordainedpriestin1857.
