Itissomewhatdifficulttodojusticetothissubjectintherestricted spaceofanarticle,butthegeneral outlinesofCatholicteachingonthis veryvitalandactual,questionofthe daymaybegiven.

Gambling,properlyso-called,is riskingmoneyongamesofchance, wherethereisnothingbutchanceto bereckonedwith,asinthrowingdice orwherescienceandskillafforda basisofcalculation,asinbilliards, orwhistandthelike.

Tothequestionisitwrong, moralistsgenerallyspeakinganswerinthe negative.Imayshocktimidsoulsat first, buteveninthrowingdicethere isnothingPerseagainstthemoral law.IfIcangiveawaymymoney whenandinwhatwayIchoose, thereisnothingtopreventmefrom makingsuchdisposalofitdependon theturningupofthreespotsinstead ofsix.Itisliketossingupacoin toseewhichroadIshalltake. Butthemoralityofanactisnot tobemeasuredbytheactalone. Thecircumstancesmustbeconsiderde. Especiallyingamingthere mustbewhatTheologianscallthe virtueofeutrapeliaormoderation.
