Forthemembergainingthegreatest numberofpointsatrophywasoffered,andthisservedtomakethe competitionavigorouslycontested one.Afteraseveretusslevictory finallyrestedeithA.Georke,who scoredconsistentlythroughout, secondandthirdhonoursgoingto J.Prendergast,andJ.Tully,respectively. ThePresident,Mr.E.O'Mahony, occupiedtheChair,andinrisingto introducethelecturer,hecordially welcomedthosepresent,statingthat asBrotherDugganhadvisitedthe sceneandwitnessedtheperformance oftheOberammagauPassionPlay sorecently,theaudienceweretobe givenanoPPortunity,soseldomafforded,ofhearinganeye-witness'accountoftheremarkableproduction.

HeassuredthelectureragoodhearingandcalledonRev.BrotherDuggan.

Bro.Duggan,whoinrising,was givenaheartywelcome,apologised forhisinabilitytoProcureslidesof thevariousscenesenactedatthe performance,which,hesaid,would havemateriallyassistedhiminhis lecture.Thefollowingarepassages culledfromthelecturer'sremarks:-

"Thedrama,togetherwithreligiousPlays,hasbeenfor twelvecenturiesafeatureofGermancivilisation,whileBavaria,asa singularfact,hasledallothercountriesinhertastefordramaticrepresentation.

EveryoneseemsgiftedwithanartistictemPerafrentandOberameraaauersparticularly,whorarelygo outsidethelimitsoftheirownvillage,liveinanatmosphereofdramaticendeavour,

ThePeasantsofBavariaadmitof nomysteriesorimpossibilities.In thisrespecttheyresembletheIrish peasantwhosolvesalldifficulties, especiallyscientificones,withtheutmostease.Irememberhavingbeen speakingtoanoldIrishman,who hadgonehayandhisfourscore years.HeremarkedthattheIrish climatehadchanged'completelyduringhislifetime.Iwasanxiousto knowtowhatcausewouldheattributethis,andputtheQuestionto him.Hisreplywascharacteristic: 'Ah"saidhe,"don'tyouknow itisthewillofGod."?

Itisexactlythesamewiththe Bavariansandsowecanreadilyunderstandtheirmindswhentheplaguevisitedthemin1632,byreason ofoneCasparShusler,whocrossed themountainsononeSunda,inordertospendthedaywithhiswife, andfamily.'

"Oberammagauisasmallvillage ofaboutBooor900inhabitants,no milessouthofMunich.Itissurrounded!onthreesidesbymountains whosesummitsarealmostperpetuallycrownedwithsnow.Lyingas itis,atthebaseofthesemountains,wecaneasilyunderstandhow muchitiscutofffromtherestof theworld,evenifitspeoplehad notanydesiretokeeptothemselves anddrawtheworld,sotospeak,to themratherthanthattheyshould holdcommunicationwithit.ArrivedatthestationofOberammagau,a fewminutessurveyofthesurroundingsisanastonishingrevelation. Quiteclosetotheright,andoutlinedagainsttheskystandsacross onthehighestmountainpeak-the Kofel. Itisthefirstthingthat arrestsone'sattentionasiftopoint outtovisitorstheemblemofthe Passion.Oneisfurtherimpressed bythestrangenessofenvironment foreverywhereareseenmenwith longflowirghair,fallingovertheir shoulders,suggestiveofPictures showninoldBiblicalrepresentations Athalf-pastseveninthemorning, oneisstartledbethereportsof twocannonatthefootoftheKofel. Thisisthesignalforthevillagers tomarchfromtheretotheimmense hallinwhichthePlayistotake place. Afewminutesbefore 8 o'clock,thecureandhisfaithful Peoplekneeldownbehindthecurtain andoffertoGodinshortfervent prayer,theworktheyaretoPerform.AtRo'clockpreciselythe membersofthechoiraPPearheaded bythePrologist,whointonesafew wordsexplanatoryoftheplay,which goesonunceasingfromStill 6 o'clock,.withanadjournmentoftwo hoursforluncheon."

Thelecturerdescribedthechoir, andOrchestraasfollows*-

Asolemnsilencepervadestheimmensecrowdofspectators,asthey feelthemselvestakenupintothe thirdHeavens,whentheybeheld Him,towhomtheyhadwhispered, manyaPrayer,andpicturedintheir imaginations,nowappearaliving realityonthestage.Noonecould helpbeingimpressedbythatalmoa divinecountenanceandtheennobling naturethatseemedtoreflectit.All theotherincidentsofOurLord's Passionweregonethroughwith Painfulreality-thescourgingatthe Pillar,thecrowningwiththorns,the carryingoftheCrossandfallingbeneathitsweight-allbroughtmanya sobandmanyatearfromtheaudiences.

Manyofthelesserincidentsinour Lord'slifewerewonderfullybrought out,notablywhereMaryMagdalen withherboxofointmentanointed thesacredfeetofherMaster,and mostpatheticallydriedthemwith herlongflowinghair,which,Iam sure,wasanobjectofenvyto manyaladyPresent.

OnMondaymorninghewasburied andtheplaguespreadwillsurprisingrapidityamongthevilla.eerswho intheirdistress,recognisedtheinexorablehandrfGodactinginpunishmentoftheirsins.Ledbytheir Curetheymarchedenmasse,totheir Church,andtherevowedtheperformanceofaPassionPlayeverytenth year,iftheAlmightywouldonly sparetheafflictedpeople'Their prayerwasheardtheplagueceased andthepeoplehavefulfilledtheir vowfornearly-threehundredyears. unif-ethefateofmanyavow madeintitresofPeril,thisPromisetoGodwasnotforgottenand theverynextyearsawthe'Passion Playperforiredforthefirsttime. Beginningwith1611,itwaaperformedeverytenyearstilli6-e,when itwasPutonanevendec-nnialbasisbeginningwith1680.

Abouttwoyearsbeforestaging theplay,themembersoftheCorporation,aswewouldcallthem, meetinsolemnconclaveintheTown Hall,andassienPartstoeveryman womanandchildinthetown.The resultsarePostedupoutside,and theexcitementisextraordinary,as thecrowdsassemnle-eachtoseethe roleheorsheistotake.Imay state,however,thatmarriedladies teenopart,astheyhavetoremainathomewhiletheplayisgoingon,cateringfortheirguests.For thisreason,manyyoungladiesdeferfortwoormoreyearstheirmatrimonialengagements,knowingthat oncetheycrosstheRubiconthey cannottakeParrintheplay.The

"TheChoirconsistsofabout7o People,standinginarowacrossthe foregroundofthestage,whichis opentotheelements. Atintervalstheyfalleat',three orfouryardsinasemi-circle,disclosingonthestageproperthemost magnificenttableaux.

OneofthefeaturesofthePle istheProcessionacrossthestage ofthechoirledbyAntonLechner, andJakoh.Rutz-twovenerableold gentlemenwithTongflowingbeards, glow,measuredstep,portlyanddignified,andfollowedinthesameway bymanyotherveneraelesanda numberofyoungmaidensofmodest mienandclearhealthycomplexion.

TheOrchestraconsistsof,atleast lomembersthemusicismostly WagnerianinrecognitionofLudwig, II,thePatronKingofWagner,as alsoofOberammagau.Themusical portionoftheperformancewas tosaytheleast,beautiful. Cold.coldindeed.shouldhe he,whoseheartwould not besensels-movedbythecreations ofthemusicianpoet,aidedbythe verybesttalentoftheGermanEno pire."

ThePrincipalcharactersoftheplay werenextdealtwith

"Oneofthemostrealisticscenes inthehistoryofthePassion is thatsolemnoneoftheLastSupper, whichisstri'singlyfamiliar.With Christusseatedatthelongtableand thetwelveApostlesseatedateither side,oneseemstohelookingatthe realityofwhichthePictureofLeonardideVinciisacopy.Kneeling beforeeachoftheMastics,bendingovertheirfeethewashesthem aswithbaptism. Whenheisagainseatedatthe table,breakingthebreadandtl ingthechalice,hecommunicates eachoftheApostlesinturnandno ceremonywithinthewallsof our Churchescouldpossiblybemoreoverpoweringlysolemn,thanthissacredscene. ThecelebratedMadame Pattiwasononeoccasioninthe presentyearaneyewitnessofthis play.Shesatunmoved,fascinated duringtheentireplay,andfora considerabletime,shewhohadmovedthousands,wassoaffectedthat shehadtohideherface,bathedin tears,inherhands.Thescene whichmovedhermostwasthisone ofChristcommunicatinghisApostleswhichsheexpressedasthemost marvelloussceneshehadseeninher life.Shesays'Thestrangebeauty,thewonderfuldignity,thegentlenessofthis('hristusasHewould bendoverthefeetoftheApostles, thenhismarvellousglidingfromone totheother-Ishallneverforget.I haveseenmuch,hutIhavenever seenanythingatallthataPProached this" Atlastthecrowningsceneofthe Crucifixioncomes.Thecurtainis slowlyraised,andtherehangthe twomalefactorswhoaretobecrucifiedwiththeSaviourwhileupon theprostrateCrossbetweenisstretch-dthebody-ofJesus.Thenthe giganticcrosswithitstenderburdenisslowlyelevated. Andnow.whatamoment! what avisionisthisofourCrucified Lordinallitsrealisticmagnitude Overspreadingthecountenancesof thespectatorstherecomesalook ofsuchpainfulintensitythatfeaturesbecomeset,lengthenedbythe prolongedsuffering," Herethelecturerwentondescribingthepiercingwiththelanceand thesufferingsofOurLordonthe Cross,andthusgiveshisownhrpressions:-

"TheChristusof1910wasAntonLane,amostremar'esaleloo'cingman,ofpreciselythesamefeaturesasthoseweareaccustomedto seeintheworkofGuideReneetallmanofabout6ft.inheight, AntonLangisthepersonificationof erace,dignityandrefinement.It wasmarvelloustowitnesshowhe borehsmeltinthevariousphasesof thesacredPassion.

Cross,itisseveralminutesbeforehe canrecovertheuseofhisreason, aswellasofhislimbs.Henever speakstoanyoneonthedayheis toappear.Hetriestoliveand feelasChristandhesa'shimself, thatfromthetimehegoesintothe GardenofGethsemaneuntiltheend, hecompletelyloseshisidentity;his awnpersonalityhascompletelymergedintothatofChriaL AftertheroleofChristus,Iwould givethepalmtothatofJ(Lien, takenbyone-JohannSchwink.The mannerinwhichthismanweighs theProsandconsofthebetrayal, theconflictingemotionsthatcross hismind,hisworriedloos-all stamphimasanartistwhosetalents wouldclaimrecognitiononanystage fromeventhemostfastidiouscritic. Amongsuchahostofcharacters. itisvery.difficulttoparticularise, butthethirdobjectofmychoice wouldbeMaryMagdalen.Theearnestnessandintensityofherlose forourLordweremanifestright throughout. Ah!whatsympathy didshenotexciteinthebreastsof allpresentwhenshecametoanoint herSaviour'sfeet.OttilieSchwink, daughterofJohannSchwink,took theroleofMaryandthoughsoreewhatonthejuvenileside,sustained herpartverywell. Itisthe heightofeverygirl'sambitionto onedaybeentrustedwiththisrole, andundoubtedlythecommittee:node nomistakeingivingittoMiss Schwink.Marycertainlehadthe sympathyoftheaudienceright through,herPhrasesandexclamationsbeingallofthedolorosatype. Therewere3otableauxintheelan, mostlyincdentstakenfromtheOld Testament.Insomeofthesethere areasmanyaseoofigures.These Tableauxweresimplyperfectionno relaxingofafeatureormusclewas apparentinanyoneduringthevery considerabletimethecurtainwas raised.Infactthewholeappeared liketomanymarblestatuescarved bysomeeminentsculptor,witha sensenotonlyofaestheticbutalsoofpictorialart.Theearnestness ofallthesePerformers-theirgraeite, theirreligioussimplicity,areall worthyofthehighestadmiration. Nothingapproachinglevitywasnoticeableatanitimeduringtheperformance.Onemightimaginethem totiesomereligiouscommunity,;Trformingoneoftheirmostsolemn exercises.

TheTheatreHallcontainsseating accommodationfor4,500peoplethe chargesare2,4,6,8,andsoshillings.TheproceedsmostlygotowardstheimprovementsinthevillageandbutaVernsmallpercentage isdividedamongthelocalfamilies. PeoPleflockfromallPartsofthe civilisedworldtowitnessthegreatesteventinEuropeduringtheyear inwhichitisheld.Thosewho haveseenitconsiderittheereatest eventintheirlives,fortheyrealise havingwitnessedthetragedyofCalvary,seenChristandHisdisciples ontheroadtoEmmaus,andwitnessedtheAscensionintoheaven. viheretheyhopeonedaytoenjoy, Him.inthefullPlenitudeof His majesty."
